My Hope is Not in Myself but in Christ - Paul Washer

  • 0:04 - 0:07
Now let me share something with you
    for Christians who struggle
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    with sadness and looking
    at yourself
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    and always really feeling down.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    The more you know God,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
the more you're going to see
    His holiness.
  • 0:18 - 0:19
The more you see His holiness,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    the more you're going
    to see your sin,
  • 0:21 - 0:26
    which leads you to deeper
    depths of conviction,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    contrition and mourning.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
But if that's all you see,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    you're in trouble.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    But with that greater
    revelation of God's holiness,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    and that greater
    revelation of your sin
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    also comes a greater revelation
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    of what God has done
    for you in Christ,
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    and that unconditional love,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    and that grace abounding
    to the chief of sinners.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    So although, you're almost
    like a paradox,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
the more you walk with Christ,
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    the deeper is your contrition
    and mourning over sin,
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    and yet greater your joy,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    and there's a transmission
    that goes on.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    No longer is your joy
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    found in your own performance,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    but it's found in the
    finished work of Christ.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
So, if the devil walks in
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    and starts pointing out all
    kinds of things about you,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    you yawn.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    And you go,
  • 1:12 - 1:17
    you don't even know
    the half of it.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
This has never been about me.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
Have I ever said this was about me?
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    This is not about me.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    I don't hope in me.
  • 1:25 - 1:26
If I hope was in me,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
you could kill my hope with
    a dagger right now;
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    the smallest pin knife
    would take down my hope.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
But my hope's not in me.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    It's in my older Brother,
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    and if you don't leave,
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    I'm going to call Him.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
You don't want me to call Him.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    Oh, believers, I want
    you to know something.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    People sometimes - young men,
    will come and they'll go,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
they look at guys who preach
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    in a lot of places
    around the world,
  • 1:50 - 1:52
and all these young guys think,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    man, this guy, he reached
    some spiritual level,
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    and because he reached
    that spiritual level,
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    God really uses him.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    No.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    No.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
The older you get, the more
    needy you become of grace.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    And the more happy you
    are in Christ alone.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    The older you get, the
more of your sin you see.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
And you trust not in the flesh,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    you glory in Christ Jesus.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    And when all your everything
  • 2:24 - 2:27
is based upon His perfect work,
  • 2:27 - 2:28
as weak as you might be,
  • 2:28 - 2:32
you're as solid as a rock.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
Because the devil can't touch Him.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    The devil can't touch Him.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    A young guy one time,
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    he calls me up,
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    he was a seminary student.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    He was just saying,
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    Brother Paul, he wrote me,
  • 2:46 - 2:49
I'm so ungodly, I'm so unrighteous,
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    I'm so this and that.
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    I knew the young man.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
He was a fine, sincere Christian.
  • 2:53 - 2:54
And he was just so struggling.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
He said I'm just so ungodly and ignorant.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
And I wrote him back and I said,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    "Dear brother, you
    are much more ungodly
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    and much more ignorant
    than you now know.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    Love, your brother, Paul."
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    I have the gift of
    mercy and encouragement.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
And so he calls me up on the phone,
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    and he goes,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    "Thanks?"
  • 3:13 - 3:16
And I said, look, I've watched your life.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    In many ways
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    you seem to have
    made greater progress
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    than I have.
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    But I'm happier than you.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    And he said why?
  • 3:26 - 3:29
I've given up on trying to find hope
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    in my performance.
  • 3:31 - 3:36
And all, everything for me, is in
  • 3:36 - 3:41
the unconditional love of my Savior.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
If you know anything about the ministry
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    that the Lord's given me.
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    If you've heard anything,
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    you go, man, that
    man just talks about sin,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    he nails people, he's
    the meanest preacher
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    that ever walked the planet.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    Let me tell you something.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
When it comes to unbelievers who
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    are professing faith in Christ
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    and they are
    asleep in their sin
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    and they are going
to die and go to hell,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
yes, I am going to rip, rip, rip,
  • 4:08 - 4:10
because it doesn't appear to me
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    that hardly anyone else
    is doing that.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
I am not going to let them go to hell
  • 4:15 - 4:18
except over my cries that they wake up
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    and see their destruction.
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    But,
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    when I pastor,
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    sometimes people come to church
  • 4:26 - 4:27
if I'm preaching and they go,
  • 4:27 - 4:31
are you the same guy on YouTube?
  • 4:31 - 4:35
Because all you do is talk about love,
    love, love, love? Why?
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    Here's the reason.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
If the person truly becomes converted,
  • 4:38 - 4:41
I don't have to do anything.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    They're sheep.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    They're going to follow Him.
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    As a shepherd, you know
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    what my greatest worry is,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    for the people who
    are truly converted?
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    I don't want them coming
    under false condemnation.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
And I don't want them doubting
    the love of God.
  • 4:54 - 4:55
    You see, the whole deal
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    depends on conversion.
  • 4:57 - 4:57
    Do you see that?
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    You get them converted,
  • 4:59 - 5:00
and you talk to them about
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    the unconditional love of God,
  • 5:02 - 5:03
and you know what they'll do?
  • 5:03 - 5:05
I'll tell you what they won't do,
they won't stand there and go
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    well, if it's like this,
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    let's just sin.
  • 5:09 - 5:10
No, you tell a true sheep
  • 5:10 - 5:12
about the unconditional love of God
  • 5:12 - 5:14
and that it doesn't matter what they do
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    or how far they fail,
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    Christ loves them and
    is going to restore them
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    and work in them,
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    and a bruised reed
    He will not break
  • 5:21 - 5:23
and a smoldering wick He will
    not put out.
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    You tell them that,
  • 5:24 - 5:26
they say, well, if it be like that
  • 5:26 - 5:29
then I want to love Him more.
I want to serve Him more.
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    I want to follow Him.
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    If I'm really free,
  • 5:32 - 5:36
    you see?
  • 5:36 - 5:37
So, all you have to do
  • 5:37 - 5:41
is get converted, and I'll be nice to you.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    But here's another thing,
  • 5:43 - 5:45
if I'm preaching on the streets
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    in a place where everybody's
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    just wild and wicked as
    Sodom and Gomorrah,
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    on this present day planet,
  • 5:51 - 5:54
I stand up and I preach the love of God.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    The time for preaching hard
  • 5:56 - 5:58
is when people have become deceived
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    by religion.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
    And when they think
    they're something they're not.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
And when most of the religious authorities
  • 6:05 - 6:07
in the world are affirming them
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    in their false conversion.
  • 6:09 - 6:10
    And for self-preservation,
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    those preachers are saying
    "peace, peace,"
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    when there is no peace.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    And people, they are building
  • 6:16 - 6:19
their huge churches on the bones
  • 6:19 - 6:22
    of carnal, dead church members.
