the American President, Abraham Lincoln. -
0:15 - 0:19Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth
president of the United States, -
0:19 - 0:24was born February 12,
1809, in Kentucky. -
0:24 - 0:28His father was a farmer
and his family was very poor, -
0:28 - 0:32living in a small,
one-room log cabin. -
0:32 - 0:35While Lincoln was still very young,
his family moved to Indiana, -
0:35 - 0:38and then again
to Illinois. -
0:38 - 0:43He only went to school for one year,
but he loved books and learning, -
0:43 - 0:46and taught himself
as much as he could. -
0:47 - 0:52When he was 22 years old, Abraham Lincoln
left home to work at a general store. -
0:52 - 0:56It was there that he got
his nickname, "Honest Abe." -
0:56 - 1:00Once a customer accidentally
over paid by a few pennies, -
1:00 - 1:02and that night
when the store closed, -
1:02 - 1:06Abraham Lincoln walked for miles
to take the money back. -
1:07 - 1:13In 1832 Lincoln
ran in an election -
1:13 - 1:14to become a member of
the Illinois State Legislature, -
1:14 - 1:18but he lost. After that he served
as a Captain in the Army, -
1:18 - 1:22and then he started working
as a lawyer, and got married. -
1:22 - 1:27In 1846 he was elected to
the US House of Representatives. -
1:27 - 1:31In 1860,
he ran for President. -
1:31 - 1:34It was a difficult time
in the United States. -
1:34 - 1:37The North and the South
disagreed on a lot of things, -
1:37 - 1:39and it was getting worse.

1:39 - 1:42One thing they disagreed
on was slavery. -
1:42 - 1:45The Northern states
did not want any more slavery. -
1:45 - 1:48The Southern states
wanted to keep their slaves. -
1:48 - 1:51Abraham Lincoln
did not like slavery, either. -
1:51 - 1:56He was elected President because
he had the support of the Northern states. -
1:56 - 1:59He had almost no support
from the Southern states. -
1:59 - 2:01As soon as
he became President, -
2:01 - 2:05southern states began
seceding from the Union. -
2:05 - 2:10That means they decided they didn't want
to be a part of the United States anymore. -
2:10 - 2:14President Lincoln was determined
to keep the country together, -
2:14 - 2:18and in 1861
a war started. -
2:18 - 2:27It was the Civil War, a terrible,
bloody war that lasted four years. -
2:28 - 2:34On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln
signed the Emancipation Proclamation, -
2:34 - 2:38an order that freed all the slaves
in the southern states. -
2:38 - 2:41A few years later, he helped to pass
the 13th amendment to the Constitution, -
2:41 - 2:46which made slavery illegal
everywhere in the United States. -
2:46 - 2:53The Civil War finally ended on April 9, 1865.
President Lincoln wanted to put the country -
2:53 - 3:00back together, and help the South rebuild.

3:01 - 3:02Unfortunately, he did not live
to see that happen. -
3:02 - 3:06Less than a week after
the end of the Civil War, -
3:06 - 3:10Lincoln and his wife were watching a play
at the Ford Theater in Washington DC -
3:10 - 3:15when he was shot in the head by
a man named John Wilkes Booth. -
3:15 - 3:21Abraham Lincoln died
the next morning, on April 15, 1865. -
3:21 - 3:26He was the first American
President to be assassinated. -
3:26 - 3:28Abraham Lincoln
once said, -
3:28 - 3:32"I want it said of me
by those who knew me best that -
3:32 - 3:34I always plucked a thistle
and planted a flower -
3:34 - 3:38where I thought
a flower would grow." -
3:38 - 3:41He is widely considered to be
one of the greatest presidents -
3:41 - 3:42in American
history. -
3:42 - 3:45His leadership
during the Civil War -
3:45 - 3:49and his defense of human
liberty make him an American hero. -
3:49 - 3:54His face is on pennies
and five dollar bills, -
3:54 - 3:55he was included
in Mount Rushmore, -
3:55 - 3:58and a memorial for him
stands in Washington, DC. -
