the American President, Abraham Lincoln. -
0:15 - 0:19Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth
president of the United States, -
0:19 - 0:25was born February 12,
1809, in Kentucky. -
0:25 - 0:28His father was a farmer
and his family was very poor, -
0:28 - 0:32living in a small,
one-room log cabin. -
0:32 - 0:35While Lincoln was still very young,
his family moved to Indiana, -
0:35 - 0:38and then again
to Illinois. -
0:38 - 0:44He only went to school for one year,
but he loved books and learning, -
0:44 - 0:46and taught himself
as much as he could. -
0:47 - 0:52When he was 22 years old, Abraham Lincoln
left home to work at a general store. -
0:52 - 0:56It was there that he got
his nickname, "Honest Abe." -
0:56 - 1:01Once a customer accidentally
over paid by a few pennies, -
1:01 - 1:04and that night
when the store closed, -
1:04 - 1:07Abraham Lincoln walked for miles
to take the money back. -
1:08 - 1:14In 1832 Lincoln ran in an election to become
a member of the Illinois State Legislature, -
1:14 - 1:20but he lost. After that he served
as a Captain in the Army, -
1:20 - 1:24and then he started working
as a lawyer, and got married. -
1:24 - 1:27In 1846 he was elected to
the US House of Representatives. -
1:27 - 1:31In 1860, he ran for President.

1:32 - 1:36It was a difficult time in the United States.
-
1:36 - 1:40The North and the South disagreed on a lot of things,
-
1:40 - 1:41and it was getting worse.
-
1:41 - 1:43One thing they disagreed on was slavery.
-
1:43 - 1:49states did not want any more slavery. The
Southern states wanted to keep their slaves. -
1:49 - 1:53Abraham Lincoln did not like slavery, either.
He was elected President because he had the -
1:53 - 1:59support of the Northern states.
He had almost no support from the Southern states. -
1:59 - 2:06As soon as he became President, southern states
began seceding from the Union. That means -
2:06 - 2:11they decided they didn't want to be a part
of the United States anymore. President Lincoln -
2:11 - 2:18was determined to keep the country together,
and in 1861 a war started. -
2:18 - 2:27It was the Civil War, a terrible, bloody war
that lasted four years. On January 1, 1863, -
2:28 - 2:34Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation,
an order that freed all the slaves in the -
2:34 - 2:41southern states. A few years later, he helped
to pass the 13th amendment to the Constitution, -
2:41 - 2:46which made slavery illegal everywhere in the
United States. -
2:46 - 2:53The Civil War finally ended on April 9, 1865.
President Lincoln wanted to put the country -
2:53 - 3:00back together, and help the South rebuild.
Unfortunately, he did not live to see that happen. -
3:02 - 3:06Less than a week after the end of the Civil
War, Lincoln and his wife were watching a -
3:06 - 3:12play at the Ford Theater in Washington DC
when he was shot in the head by a man named -
3:12 - 3:21John Wilkes Booth. Abraham Lincoln died the
next morning, on April 15, 1865. He was the -
3:22 - 3:26first American President to be assassinated.

3:27 - 3:32Abraham Lincoln once said, "I want it said
of me by those who knew me best that I always -
3:32 - 3:38plucked a thistle and planted a flower where
I thought a flower would grow." He is widely -
3:38 - 3:43considered to be one of the greatest presidents
in American history. His leadership during -
3:43 - 3:50the Civil War and his defense of human
liberty make him an American hero. -
3:50 - 3:56His face is on pennies and five dollar bills,
he was included in Mount Rushmore, -
3:56 - 3:58and a memorial for him
stands in Washington, DC. -
