  1. Thirdly, if we are praying this prayer
  2. that we might grow in graciousness;
  3. in grace, we are praying
  4. that we might progress
    in conscientiousness.
  5. That is, in responsiveness
  6. and obedience to our own consciences.
  7. Because God has placed that monitor
  8. in our minds,
  9. and it reproves us when we do wrong,
  10. and it encourages us when we do right.
  11. Well, how is it with your
    conscience and you tonight?
  12. How are things between you
  13. and that monitor; that voice of God?
  14. You know there are many consciences,
  15. and in Thomas Boston's words,
  16. they're too persnickety.
  17. They condemn what
    God's Word doesn't condemn.
  18. We must educate that conscience.
  19. Does the Bible condemn blood transfusions?
  20. For example.
  21. And there are other consciences
  22. and they let anything pass.
  23. They let pass what God's Word condemns.
  24. They are less sensitive
    than they should be.
  25. They are much too broad; much too open.
  26. So, we must always bring our conscience
  27. under the light of the Word of God.
  28. You know the Puritan illustration then
  29. of the sundial?
  30. And the sundial will work
  31. if it's at the right angle,
  32. and in regards to the light of the sun.
  33. But on a bright moonlight night,
  34. you can go out to your garden
  35. and you can look at a sundial,
  36. and there will be a shadow -
  37. a moon shadow.
  38. And it will give you the
    totally wrong reading.
  39. Because it's not a moondial,
  40. it's a sundial.
  41. And so there is the conscience
  42. of the cannibal.
  43. And there is the conscience
    of the abortionist.
  44. And they are not living in accord
  45. with what the Word of God
  46. who created the conscience gives to us.
  47. Now, let's suppose that you have
  48. an enlightened conscience.
  49. Let's suppose that you have
  50. the full light of God's Word
  51. on your conscience then.
  52. Are you carefully obeying it
  53. when you are emotionally disinclined?
  54. When you're lying on the floor
  55. in despondency and sulking
  56. and unhappy because your worst fears
  57. are being realized?
  58. When you're in the depth of depression
  59. and self-pity,
  60. and there's a duty that
    you have to attend to?
  61. It's a duty. It's very unpleasant.
  62. It's very demanding.
  63. Do you do what your conscience tells you
  64. that you should do?
  65. Do you have the maturity
    to stand on your emotions
  66. and reject them
  67. in the face of their reluctance
  68. and aversion to attend to
  69. what God commands us?
  70. There's no greater peril
    in the Christian life
  71. than to make our emotions
  72. the touchstone of our duties.
  73. And time and again, we have to
  74. pick ourselves up off the floor
  75. of discouragement,
  76. and say I have a duty,
  77. and I know this is right,
  78. and I'm going to do it.
  79. Or again, let me ask you,
  80. are you conscientious about small things?
  81. Because there most of all,
  82. Christians are tested.
  83. We don't have huge sacrifices to make,
  84. but every day, there are many
  85. little duties that you
    know have to be done.
  86. And we have to pay careful attention
  87. to matters of detail,
  88. because our Lord,
  89. He commends people
  90. who are faithful in little things.
  91. And so often, we are losing the battle
  92. in little things.
  93. It might seem to you
  94. not a big issue to be in prayer meeting
  95. on a Wednesday night there.
  96. It might not seem a big issue
  97. to be in Sunday nights of church.
  98. A small thing.
  99. It might seem just a little thing
  100. to ignore writing a letter to someone
  101. to say thanks for all your kindness to me.
  102. Certain things.
  103. But we must make conscience, then,
  104. if we are going to grow in graciousness,
  105. our conscience - we respect it.
  106. Whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
