You Can Learn to Be Content - Geoff Thomas

  • 0:01 - 0:06
    Where can contentment be found?
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    And so often, Christians
    admire contentment
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    and they long for it
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    and they confess they're
    strangers to contentment.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    They make it so unattainable.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
"Oh, if only I had the second blessing
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    how contented I would be."
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    And they blame their upbringing
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    and they blame their personality.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
They say, "My mother was discontented,"
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    "my grandmother was..."
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    and I'm discontented too.
  • 0:30 - 0:35
    Paul says he learned contentment.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
He learned it. He learned it.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    It didn't come to him
    on the Damascus road.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    One moment, driving, rabbinically furious,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    and then the Damascus road,
  • 0:47 - 0:52
and after that he was just
    laid back from then on.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
It wasn't like that. He learned it.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
He was in a meeting once -
    a prayer meeting -
  • 0:58 - 1:00
and an old Christian got up and he said,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    "Let's think of Psalm 23...
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    'The Lord is my Shepherd,
  • 1:05 - 1:09
and so I will not be in want.'"
  • 1:09 - 1:11
The Shepherd - like my Lord?
  • 1:11 - 1:14
The King of the universe is mine?
  • 1:14 - 1:17
Oh, I'm not going to be in want.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    I'm going to trust Him.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    I'm going to be content.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    Paul listened.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    Paul learned like you learned
  • 1:25 - 1:29
    coming here Sunday by Sunday.
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    He learned it.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
And you have to learn it too.
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    What did he learn?
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    He learned one:
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    being discontented is a sin.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    It's against our whole position
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    that our Lord looks after
    us and cares for us.
  • 1:43 - 1:48
    All things are working
    together for our good.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    You know, we can parade
    our discontentedness
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    because: "I love her,
    but she doesn't love me."
  • 1:54 - 1:59
"She won't marry me and I'm sulking
  • 1:59 - 2:00
for the rest of my life."
  • 2:00 - 2:03
You're saying Jesus made a mistake then
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    in closing that door.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    Being discontented is a sin.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
Secondly, it's possible to be contented.
  • 2:12 - 2:17
    Those of you who've had
    a very trying upbringing,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    it's possible for you
    to learn contentment.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
Not just a few people who are
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    self-integrated and intelligent
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    and sensible men and women.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    Not just them, but you
  • 2:32 - 2:33
with all the pressures and strains
  • 2:33 - 2:35
that your life has been under,
  • 2:35 - 2:38
you can be a contented person.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    And no circumstance,
    no set of circumstance
  • 2:41 - 2:44
can take that contentment from you.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    That's the Christian life.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
I have learned in whatsoever state I am
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    therewith to be content.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    And then thirdly,
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    Paul discovered how -
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    how to be content.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    Well, I've taken over the
    Hilton in San Antonio.
  • 3:01 - 3:05
    It's only $100 you have
    to pay next weekend.
  • 3:05 - 3:11
    I'll be giving lectures on
    how to learn contentment.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    Not. Not.
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    I'll tell you without
    money and without price
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    how to be contented.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    You go to God
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    and you say to God,
  • 3:25 - 3:29
    "Thy will be done."
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    That's it.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    Thy will be done.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
I don't want my own will.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    I want Your will.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    And that's why so often
    I'm a discontented person
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    because I don't like God's will.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    I don't like what God
    has done with my life.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
And there's no way I'm going to wear
  • 3:49 - 3:53
the red jewel of Christian contentment
  • 3:53 - 3:55
without taking my stand on this:
  • 3:55 - 3:57
what I want in my life is the will of God.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    And then when God says,
    "Alright, My child,
  • 3:59 - 4:02
this is My will for you."
  • 4:02 - 4:05
"This is the way I want you to walk."
  • 4:05 - 4:08
"I want you to be brave."
  • 4:08 - 4:10
"I want you on the narrow path."
  • 4:10 - 4:15
"I want you to be looking
    unto Me every day."
  • 4:15 - 4:19
    And then when I know,
    well, it's God's will,
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    and I'm not frustrated,
  • 4:22 - 4:25
I'm not discontented, I'm not depressed,
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    I'm not plaintive,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    I'm not self-pitying
  • 4:28 - 4:31
because this is my Father's will.
  • 4:31 - 4:36
And so I rejoice to do Thy will, O Lord.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
And Jesus could say that perfectly.
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    And that's my righteousness.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
That He's left me and example
  • 4:44 - 4:46
and I walk in His steps.
  • 4:46 - 4:50
And I want to be content
    too following the Savior.
