Guan Xiao: Breaking Free | Art21 "Extended Play"

  • 0:19 - 0:21
We have all developed this bad habit
  • 0:21 - 0:25
that as long as we have a phone
    or computer next to us,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
we will be fully occupied by it.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
Once you have the option to use
your phone or computer, that's it.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    You will definitely choose to
    use your phone or computer.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
Every day, a large part of my works
have something to do with the computer.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    But to finish my works,
it has to be done in a studio.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    In our studio, we don't
    have an Internet connection.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
We use phones to play some music,
    and that's it.
  • 1:07 - 1:13
You can't always hold your phone because
our hands are dirty from working.
  • 1:13 - 1:19
For me it's a really good feeling,
    kind of like meditation.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
Even if your body feels tired,
    your spirit is totally relaxed.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
No one can escape the era they live in.
  • 1:48 - 1:55
Especially in China, people are interested
    in social and politics-related works.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    They love discussing politics.
  • 2:00 - 2:05
And people enjoy looking at works
    that have a social meaning.
  • 2:12 - 2:18
They feel those works are more profound.
  • 2:20 - 2:27
But they forget that political artwork
is just one category of many.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    I'm not talking about
    Western galleries or Western artists,
  • 2:33 - 2:39
    but local artists and
    galleries and collectors in China.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
It's hard for artists from the last generation
  • 2:48 - 2:55
    to create something without
the discussion of politics and social issues.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
They can't say, "I just want to be
a quiet artist and make what I want."
  • 2:59 - 3:03
    It's really difficult for that
    generation of artists
  • 3:03 - 3:06
to make this kind of work
and to make a living from it.
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    I think artists like me,
who were born in the 1980s,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
we start to have the possibility to say:
  • 3:13 - 3:15
"Ok, you can be a visual artist"
  • 3:15 - 3:17
"and you can make a living this way."
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    I think this is great.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
    --Hang on. Lift.
  • 3:57 - 4:00
--Slowly, take your hand out, good.
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    I hope that in China
  • 4:05 - 4:08
there could be more art that's different.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
Everything an artist does is to
    express their sense of freedom,
  • 4:17 - 4:23
to break our ideas free of the
frames that are holding them in.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
That is actually what is political.
