You are not your body | Janine Shepherd | TEDxKC

0:19 - 0:24Life is about opportunities,
creating them, and embracing them -
0:24 - 0:27and for me that was the Olympic dream,
-
0:27 - 0:30that's what defined me, that was my bliss.
-
0:31 - 0:34As a cross-country skier and a member
of the Australian ski team -
0:34 - 0:36headed toward the Winter Olympics,
-
0:36 - 0:40I was on a training bike ride
with my fellow teammates. -
0:40 - 0:43As we made our way up
towards the spectacular -
0:43 - 0:45Blue Mountains west of Sydney
-
0:45 - 0:48it was the perfect autumn day:
-
0:48 - 0:52sunshine, the smell of eucalypt,
and a dream. -
0:52 - 0:53Life was good.
-
0:53 - 0:56We'd been on our bikes
around five and a half hours -
0:56 - 0:58when we got to the part
of the ride that I loved, -
0:58 - 1:02and that was the hills,
because I loved the hills. -
1:02 - 1:03And I got up off the seat of my bike
-
1:03 - 1:07and I started pumping my legs
and as I sucked in the cold mountain air, -
1:07 - 1:09I could feel it burning my lungs
-
1:09 - 1:12and I looked up to see the sun
shining in my face. -
1:13 - 1:16And then everything went black.
-
1:17 - 1:18Where was I?
-
1:18 - 1:19What was happening?
-
1:19 - 1:22My body was consumed by pain.
-
1:23 - 1:26I'd been hit by a speeding utility truck
-
1:26 - 1:29with only 10 minutes
to go on the bike ride. -
1:29 - 1:32I was airlifted from the scene
of the accident -
1:32 - 1:35by a rescue helicopter
to a large spinal unit in Sydney. -
1:35 - 1:38I had extensive
and life threatening injuries. -
1:38 - 1:42I'd broken my neck
and my back in six places. -
1:42 - 1:46I broke five ribs on my left side,
I broke my right arm, -
1:46 - 1:50I broke my collarbone,
I broke some bones in my feet. -
1:50 - 1:53My whole right side
was ripped open filled with gravel. -
1:53 - 1:54My head was cut open across the front,
-
1:54 - 1:57lifted back,
exposing the skull underneath. -
1:57 - 2:00I had head injuries, internal injuries,
I had massive blood loss. -
2:00 - 2:02In fact, I lost about 5 liters of blood
-
2:02 - 2:05which is all someone my size
would actually hold. -
2:05 - 2:08By the time the helicopter arrived
to Prince Henry Hospital in Sydney, -
2:08 - 2:11my blood pressure was forty over nothing.
-
2:12 - 2:15I was having a really bad day.
-
2:15 - 2:18(Laughter)
-
2:21 - 2:26For over 10 days,
I drifted between two dimensions. -
2:26 - 2:29I had an awareness of being in my body,
-
2:29 - 2:31but also being out of my body
-
2:31 - 2:32somewhere else watching from above,
-
2:32 - 2:34as if it was happening
to someone else. -
2:34 - 2:38Why would I want to go back
to a body that was so broken? -
2:38 - 2:43But this voice kept calling me,
"Come on, stay with me." -
2:43 - 2:45"No, it's too hard."
-
2:45 - 2:49"Come on, this is our opportunity."
-
2:49 - 2:53"No! That body is broken.
It can no longer serve me!" -
2:53 - 2:57"Come on, stay with me.
We can do it! We can do it together." -
2:58 - 3:00I was at a crossroads.
-
3:00 - 3:05I knew if I didn't return to my body,
I'd have to leave this world forever. -
3:05 - 3:07It was the fight of my life.
-
3:08 - 3:13After 10 days, I made the decision
to return to my body, -
3:13 - 3:16and the internal bleeding stopped.
-
3:17 - 3:20The next concern
was weather I would walk again -
3:20 - 3:23because I was paralyzed
from the waist down. -
3:23 - 3:26They said to my parents,
the neck break was a stable fracture, -
3:26 - 3:28but the back was completely crushed.
-
3:28 - 3:31The vertebra at L1 was like
you'd dropped a peanut, -
3:31 - 3:35stepped on it, and smashed it
into thousands of pieces. -
3:35 - 3:37They'd have to operate.
-
3:37 - 3:40They went in, they put me on a bean bag,
-
3:40 - 3:42they cut me, literally cut me in half.
-
3:42 - 3:45I have a scar that wraps around
my entire body. -
3:45 - 3:48They picked as much broken bone
as they could -
3:48 - 3:50that had lodged in my spinal cord.
-
3:50 - 3:54They took out two of my broken ribs,
and they rebuilt my back, L1. -
3:54 - 3:55They rebuilt it.
-
3:55 - 3:57They took out another broken rib.
-
3:57 - 4:01They fused T12, L1, and L2 together,
then they stitched me up. -
4:01 - 4:03They took an entire hour to stitch me up.
-
4:03 - 4:05I woke up in intensive care
-
4:05 - 4:08and the doctors were really excited
that the operation had been a success -
4:08 - 4:12because at that stage, I had a little bit
of movement in one of my big toes -
4:12 - 4:15and I thought, "Great!
Because I'm going to the Olympics!" -
4:15 - 4:17(Laughter)
-
4:17 - 4:19I had no idea.
-
4:19 - 4:21That's the sort of thing
that happens to someone else! -
4:21 - 4:23Not me, surely.
-
4:23 - 4:25But then the doctor came over
to me and she said, -
4:25 - 4:28"Janine, the operation was a success,
-
4:28 - 4:31and we've picked as much bone
out of your spinal cord as we could, -
4:31 - 4:33but the damage is permanent."
-
4:33 - 4:35The central nervous system nerves,
there is no cure. -
4:36 - 4:38You're what we call a partial paraplegic
-
4:38 - 4:42and you'll have all of the injuries
that go along with that. -
4:42 - 4:44You have no feeling from the waist down
-
4:44 - 4:48and at most you might get
10 or 20% return. -
4:48 - 4:51You'll have internal injures
for the rest of your life. -
4:51 - 4:54You'll have to use a catheter
for the rest of your life -
4:54 - 4:59and if you walk again, it will be
with calipers and a walking frame." -
4:59 - 5:03And then she said, "Janine, you'll have
to rethink everything you do in your life -
5:03 - 5:08because you're never going to be able
to do the things you did before." -
5:08 - 5:11I tried to grasp what she was saying.
-
5:11 - 5:13I was an athlete.
That's all I knew, that's all I'd done, -
5:13 - 5:16if I couldn't do that,
then what could I do? -
5:16 - 5:22And the question I asked myself is:
if I couldn't do that, then who was I? -
5:25 - 5:29They moved me from intensive care
to acute spinal. -
5:29 - 5:33I was lying on a thin, hard spinal bed.
I had no movement in my legs. -
5:33 - 5:37I had tight stocking on
to protect from blood clots. -
5:37 - 5:39I had one arm in plaster,
one arm tied down by drips. -
5:39 - 5:42I had a neck brace and sand bags
on either side of my head, -
5:42 - 5:44and I saw my world through a mirror
-
5:44 - 5:47that was suspended above my head.
-
5:47 - 5:50I shared the ward with five other people
-
5:51 - 5:53and the amazing thing is that
-
5:53 - 5:56because we were all lying paralyzed
in the spinal ward -
5:56 - 5:58we didn't know
what each other looked like. -
5:58 - 6:00How amazing is that?
-
6:00 - 6:06How often in life do you get to make
friendships judgement free, -
6:06 - 6:08purely based on spirit?
-
6:09 - 6:11And there no superficial conversations,
-
6:11 - 6:15as we shared our innermost thoughts,
our fears, -
6:15 - 6:18and our hopes for life
after the spinal ward. -
6:19 - 6:23I remember one night,
one of the nurses came in, Jonathan, -
6:23 - 6:26with a whole lot of plastic straws.
-
6:26 - 6:28He put a pile on top of each of us,
and he said, -
6:28 - 6:31"Start threading them together."
-
6:31 - 6:36Well, there wasn't much else to do
in the spinal ward, so we did. -
6:36 - 6:38And when we'd finished,
he went around silently -
6:38 - 6:41and he joined all of the straws up
-
6:41 - 6:44till it looped around the whole ward
-
6:44 - 6:49and then he said,
"Okay everybody, hold on to your straws." -
6:49 - 6:50And we did.
-
6:50 - 6:54And he said, "Right.
Now we are all connected." -
6:55 - 7:00And as we held on and we breathed as one,
-
7:01 - 7:04we knew we weren't on this journey alone.
-
7:05 - 7:10And even lying paralyzed
in the spinal ward, -
7:10 - 7:12there were moments of incredible depth
-
7:12 - 7:16and richness,
of authenticity and connection, -
7:17 - 7:19that I had never experienced before.
-
7:21 - 7:25And each of us knew
that when we left the spinal ward, -
7:26 - 7:28we would never be the same.
-
7:30 - 7:33After six months, it was time to go home.
-
7:34 - 7:37I remember dad pushing me outside
in my wheelchair -
7:37 - 7:40wrapped in a plaster body cast
-
7:40 - 7:44and feeling the sun on my face
for the first time. -
7:44 - 7:46I soaked it up and I thought,
-
7:46 - 7:49"How could I ever have taken this
for granted?" -
7:50 - 7:53I felt so incredibly grateful for my life.
-
7:53 - 7:56But before I left hospital,
the head nurse had said to me, -
7:56 - 7:59"Janine, I want you to be ready
because when you get home -
7:59 - 8:01something is going to happen."
-
8:01 - 8:02And I said, "What?"
-
8:02 - 8:04She said, "You're going to get depressed."
-
8:04 - 8:08And I said, "Not me, not
'Janine the machine'" -
8:08 - 8:09which was my nickname.
-
8:09 - 8:12She said "You are. Because, see,
it happens to everyone. -
8:12 - 8:15In the spinal ward, that's normal.
-
8:15 - 8:17You're in a wheelchair, that's normal.
-
8:17 - 8:20But you're going to get home
and realize how different life is." -
8:20 - 8:24And I got home, and something happened.
-
8:26 - 8:29I realized Sister Sam was right.
-
8:30 - 8:32I did get depressed.
-
8:33 - 8:37I was in my wheelchair,
I had no feeling from the waist down, -
8:37 - 8:40attached to a catheter bottle,
I couldn't walk. -
8:40 - 8:45I'd lost so much weight in hospital,
I now weighed about 80 pounds. -
8:46 - 8:48And I wanted to give up.
-
8:48 - 8:50All I wanted to do was
put my running shoes on -
8:50 - 8:52and run out the door.
-
8:52 - 8:55I wanted my old life back.
I wanted my body back. -
8:55 - 8:58And I could remember mum
sitting on the end of my bed -
8:58 - 9:02and saying, "I wonder if life
will ever be good again?" -
9:02 - 9:04And I thought, "How could it?
-
9:04 - 9:07Because I've lost everything
that I valued, -
9:08 - 9:12everything that I'd worked towards...
gone." -
9:13 - 9:17And the question I asked was:
Why me? Why me? -
9:18 - 9:22And then I remembered
my friends that were still -
9:22 - 9:23in the spinal ward.
-
9:24 - 9:26Particularly Maria.
-
9:26 - 9:28Maria was in a car accident
and she woke up -
9:28 - 9:31on her 16th birthday to the news
that she was a complete quadriplegic, -
9:33 - 9:35had no movement from the neck down,
-
9:35 - 9:37had damage to her vocal cords
and she couldn't talk. -
9:39 - 9:41They told me, "We are going to move you
next to her -
9:41 - 9:44because we think it will be good to her."
-
9:44 - 9:49I was worried. I didn't know
how I'd react being next to her. -
9:49 - 9:51I knew it would be challenging,
but it was actually -
9:51 - 9:56a blessing because Maria always smiled.
-
9:58 - 10:01She was always happy,
and even when she began to talk again, -
10:02 - 10:05albeit difficult to understand,
-
10:05 - 10:08she never complained. Not once.
-
10:08 - 10:14And I wondered how had she ever
found that level of acceptance? -
10:14 - 10:18And I realized
that this wasn't just my life. -
10:18 - 10:20It was life itself.
-
10:20 - 10:25I realized that this wasn't just my pain,
it was everybody's pain. -
10:25 - 10:30And then I knew, just like before,
that I had a choice. -
10:31 - 10:35I could keep fighting this
or I could let go and accept -
10:36 - 10:40not only my body,
but the circumstances of my life. -
10:41 - 10:44And then I stopped asking, "Why me?"
-
10:44 - 10:48and I started to ask, "Why not me?"
-
10:48 - 10:52And then I thought to myself
maybe being at rock bottom -
10:52 - 10:55is actually the perfect place to start.
-
10:59 - 11:02I had never before thought
of myself as a creative person. -
11:02 - 11:06I was an athlete, my body was a machine.
-
11:07 - 11:11But now, I was about to embark
on the most creative project -
11:11 - 11:13any of us could ever do.
-
11:13 - 11:15That of rebuilding a life.
-
11:16 - 11:20And even though I had absolutely
no idea what I was going to do, -
11:20 - 11:24in that uncertainty,
came a sense of freedom. -
11:24 - 11:26I was no longer tied to a set path.
-
11:26 - 11:31I was free to explore
life's infinite possibilities. -
11:32 - 11:37And that realization
was about to change my life. -
11:39 - 11:43Sitting at home, in my wheelchair
and my plaster body cast, -
11:43 - 11:46an airplane flew overhead
-
11:47 - 11:49and I looked up and I thought to myself,
-
11:49 - 11:54"That's it! If I can't walk,
then I might as well fly!" -
11:55 - 11:57I said, "Mum, I'm going to learn
how to fly!" -
11:57 - 11:59She said, "That's nice, dear."
-
11:59 - 12:01(Laughter)
-
12:01 - 12:04I said, "Pass me the yellow pages."
-
12:04 - 12:07She passed me the phone book,
I rang up the flying school, -
12:07 - 12:10I made a booking, said, "I'd like to make
a booking to come out for a flight." -
12:10 - 12:13They said, "When do you want to come out?"
-
12:13 - 12:15I said, "Well I have to get
a friend to drive me out -
12:15 - 12:18because I can't drive, haha,
sort of can't walk either, ha. -
12:18 - 12:19Is that a problem?"
-
12:19 - 12:22I made a booking,
and weeks later my friend Chris -
12:22 - 12:23and my mom drove me out to the airport.
-
12:23 - 12:25All 80 pounds of me,
-
12:25 - 12:28covered in a plaster body cast
and a baggy pair of overalls. -
12:28 - 12:30I can tell you I did not look
like the ideal candidate -
12:30 - 12:31to get a pilot's license.
-
12:31 - 12:33(Laughter)
-
12:33 - 12:35I'm holding onto the counter
because I can't stand. -
12:35 - 12:38I said, "Hi!
I'm here for a flying lesson." -
12:38 - 12:41And they took one look and ran out
the back to draw short straws. -
12:41 - 12:42"You get her!"
-
12:42 - 12:44"No, no! You take her!"
-
12:44 - 12:46Finally this guy comes out,
-
12:46 - 12:48"Hi! I'm Andrew
and I'm going to take you flying." -
12:48 - 12:49I go, "Great!"
-
12:49 - 12:50So they drive me down.
-
12:50 - 12:52They get me out on the tarmac,
-
12:52 - 12:54and there was this red,
white, and blue airplane. -
12:54 - 12:55It was beautiful!
-
12:55 - 12:56They lifted me into the cockpit.
-
12:56 - 12:59They had to slide me up
on the wing, put me in the cockpit. -
12:59 - 13:00They sat me down.
-
13:00 - 13:02There were buttons and dials everywhere.
-
13:02 - 13:06I'm going, "Wow! How do you ever know
what all these buttons and dials do?" -
13:06 - 13:09Andrew the instructor got in the front;
started the airplane up, -
13:09 - 13:11he said, "Would you like
to have a go at taxiing?" -
13:11 - 13:14That's when you use your feet
to control the rudder pedals -
13:14 - 13:16to control the airplane on the ground.
-
13:16 - 13:18I said, "No. Ha ha, I can't use my legs."
-
13:18 - 13:20He went, "Oh." I said,
"But I can use my hands." -
13:20 - 13:21And he said, "Okay."
-
13:21 - 13:24So he got over to the runway,
and he applied the power. -
13:24 - 13:26And as we took off down the runway,
-
13:26 - 13:29and the wheels lifted up off the tarmac,
and we became airborne -
13:29 - 13:33I had the most incredible
sense of freedom. -
13:34 - 13:39And Andrew said to me,
as we got over the training area, -
13:39 - 13:41"You see that mountain over there?"
-
13:41 - 13:43And I said, "Yeah?"
-
13:43 - 13:48And he said, "Well you take the controls,
and you fly towards that mountain." -
13:48 - 13:51And as I looked up,
I realized that he was pointing -
13:51 - 13:53towards the Blue Mountains,
-
13:53 - 13:56where the journey had begun.
-
13:57 - 14:00And I took the controls, and I was flying,
-
14:01 - 14:04and I was a long,
long way from that spinal ward. -
14:04 - 14:08And I knew right then
that I was going to be a pilot. -
14:08 - 14:12Didn't know how I'd ever pass
a medical, puff, -
14:12 - 14:15but I'd worry about that later
because right now I had a dream! -
14:15 - 14:19So I went home, I got a training
diary out, and I had a plan. -
14:19 - 14:22And I practiced my walking
as much as I could. -
14:22 - 14:26And I went from the point
of like two people holding me up, -
14:26 - 14:28to one person holding me up,
-
14:28 - 14:31to the point where I could walk
around the furniture, -
14:31 - 14:32as long as it wasn't too far apart,
-
14:32 - 14:35and then I made great progression
to the point -
14:35 - 14:38where I could walk around the house
holding onto the walls -
14:38 - 14:41like this, and mum said
she was forever following me -
14:41 - 14:43wiping off my fingerprints.
-
14:43 - 14:44(Laughter)
-
14:44 - 14:47But at least she always knew where I was.
-
14:47 - 14:49(Laughter)
-
14:49 - 14:52So while the doctors continued to operate,
-
14:52 - 14:54and put my body back together again,
-
14:54 - 14:56I went on with my theory study,
-
14:56 - 15:00and then eventually and amazingly,
I passed my pilot's medical. -
15:00 - 15:03And that was my green light to fly.
-
15:03 - 15:05And I spend every moment I could
-
15:05 - 15:07out of that flying school
way out of my comfort zone, -
15:07 - 15:09all these young guys that wanted to be
-
15:09 - 15:12Qantas pilots and, you know,
little, old hop-along me -
15:12 - 15:14in first my plaster cast,
and then my steel brace, -
15:14 - 15:19my baggy overalls, my bag of medication
and catheters, and my limp. -
15:19 - 15:21And they used to look at me and think,
-
15:21 - 15:24"Oh! Who is she kidding?
She is never going to be able to do this!" -
15:24 - 15:26And sometimes I thought that too.
-
15:26 - 15:28But that didn't matter
-
15:28 - 15:30because now there was something
inside that burned -
15:30 - 15:34that far outweighed my injuries.
-
15:35 - 15:37And little goals
kept me going along the way. -
15:37 - 15:40And eventually I got
my private pilot's license, -
15:40 - 15:42and then I learned to navigate,
-
15:42 - 15:46and I flew my friends around Australia.
-
15:46 - 15:48And then I learned to fly
an airplane with two engines, -
15:48 - 15:51and I got my twin engine rating.
-
15:51 - 15:54And then I learned to fly
in bad weather as well as fine weather -
15:54 - 15:57and got my instrument rating.
-
15:57 - 15:59And then I got my commercial
pilot's license. -
15:59 - 16:02And then I got my instructor rating.
-
16:02 - 16:05And then, I found myself
back at that same school -
16:05 - 16:08where I'd gone for that very first flight
-
16:08 - 16:11teaching other people how to fly,
-
16:11 - 16:15just under 18 months
after I'd left the spinal ward. -
16:15 - 16:22(Applause)
-
16:27 - 16:29And then I thought, "Why stop there?
-
16:29 - 16:32Why not learn to fly upside down?"
-
16:32 - 16:33And I did.
-
16:33 - 16:35And I learned to fly upside down
-
16:35 - 16:38and became and aerobatics
flying instructor. -
16:39 - 16:42And mum and dad, never been up.
-
16:42 - 16:45(Laughter)
-
16:45 - 16:49But then I knew for certain,
that although my body -
16:49 - 16:53might be limited, it was my spirit
that was unstoppable. -
16:57 - 16:59The philosopher Lao Tzu once said,
-
17:00 - 17:02"When you let go of what you are,
-
17:02 - 17:05you become what you might be."
-
17:05 - 17:09I now know that it wasn't till
I let go of who I thought -
17:09 - 17:14I was that I was able to create
a completely new life. -
17:15 - 17:19It wasn't till I let go of the life
I thought I should have, -
17:20 - 17:21that I was able to embrace
-
17:21 - 17:24the life that was waiting for me.
-
17:24 - 17:29I now know that my real strength
never came from my body. -
17:30 - 17:33And although my physical capabilities
-
17:33 - 17:38have changed dramatically,
who I am is unchanged. -
17:40 - 17:43The pillar light inside of me
was still alight -
17:43 - 17:47just as it is in each and every one of us.
-
17:48 - 17:51I know that I am not my body,
-
17:52 - 17:54and I also know that you are not yours.
-
17:55 - 18:01And then it no longer matters
what you look like, where you come from, -
18:01 - 18:03or what you do for a living.
-
18:03 - 18:07All that matters is that we continue
-
18:07 - 18:11to fan the flame of humanity
by living our lives -
18:11 - 18:16as the ultimate creative expression
of who we really are. -
18:17 - 18:23Because we are all connected
by millions and millions of straws. -
18:24 - 18:28And it's time to join those up,
and to hang on, -
18:29 - 18:33and if we are to move towards
our collective bliss, -
18:33 - 18:36it's time we shed our focus
on the physical, -
18:36 - 18:39and instead embrace
the virtues of the heart. -
18:39 - 18:42So raise your straws if you'll join me!
-
18:43 - 18:45(Applause) Thank you!
-
18:45 - 18:49(Applause)
-
18:50 - 18:52Thank you.
-
18:53 - 18:56(Applause)
- Title:
- You are not your body | Janine Shepherd | TEDxKC
- Description:
-
We often define ourselves by things that are "outside" us: relationships, work, family - even our own bodies. But what would it mean to have your life dramatically altered and your body irrevocably damaged? Who would you be then? This talk explores the impact of loss on the human psyche and the universal quest to find meaning and fulfillment. It is only through the process of losing everything we thought we needed that we find who we truly are.
