Open Air illuminates Philly night sky
-
0:00 - 0:04I believe in Philadelphia I often tell
-
0:04 - 0:06people my attachment to Philly is
-
0:06 - 0:08visceral. When I'm downtown or a South
-
0:08 - 0:10Philly restaurant, I feel remarkably
-
0:10 - 0:12connected. "Should I compare thee to a
-
0:12 - 0:15summers day? Thou art more lovely and
-
0:15 - 0:16more temperate.
-
0:16 - 0:19"Open air is a large scale interactive
-
0:19 - 0:21installation, where very powerful
-
0:21 - 0:23spotlights are actually controlled by
-
0:23 - 0:26the voices of participants. Most of the
-
0:26 - 0:27time when you see a show, a light show in
-
0:27 - 0:30the sky, it's actually following a score
-
0:30 - 0:32of music so the lights are moving to the
-
0:32 - 0:34beat. Instead here in Philadelphia, what
-
0:34 - 0:36we're doing, is if those lights move it's
-
0:36 - 0:38because they were reacting to the voice
-
0:38 - 0:40of someone who has sent a message either
-
0:40 - 0:43through a special iPhone app or through
-
0:43 - 0:47a webpage. That message arrives into our
-
0:47 - 0:50servers, we analyze it for volume for
-
0:50 - 0:52intonation for frequency, and then when
-
0:52 - 0:55it gets played back in the Parkway the
-
0:55 - 0:57lights react to those parameters. So in
-
0:57 - 1:19position and and in intensity." (music)
-
1:19 - 1:21"The project is in a way it's kind of
-
1:21 - 1:23like a rant line or maybe like a
-
1:23 - 1:25voicemail system, where you send messages
-
1:25 - 1:27but instead of sending them directly to
-
1:27 - 1:29somebody, first they go into the night
-
1:29 - 1:31sky. People can listen to those messages
-
1:31 - 1:33through the phone or through speakers
-
1:33 - 1:35that are any consolable in Logan Square.
-
1:35 - 1:38So the idea is, create a platform for
-
1:38 - 1:40communication, but that is visualized and
-
1:40 - 1:48that takes over the entire park. "Baby, it looks like you never felt sky before, well let
-
1:48 - 1:50all rhythm read the fine morning before
-
1:50 - 1:52you go blowing out those stars of
-
1:52 - 1:56tomorrow and I'm Ray by the way. Then
-
1:56 - 1:59yeah". "When your message appears in the
-
1:59 - 2:02night sky, the system notifies you it's
-
2:02 - 2:03like.. 'hey it's your turn here comes your
-
2:03 - 2:06message' and all the lights actually find
-
2:06 - 2:08you with GPS tracking and all the lights
-
2:08 - 2:10are oriented toward you. So in a way you
-
2:10 - 2:13become part of the show, you're part of
-
2:13 - 2:15in the limelight so to speak but it's
-
2:15 - 2:17also a little bit awkward or violent
-
2:17 - 2:18because you feel like all of these
-
2:18 - 2:21lights are actually tracking you over
-
2:21 - 2:22the park where you can't get away from
-
2:22 - 2:25them, so it's a project that has a a
-
2:25 - 2:28sense of seduction and participation but
-
2:28 - 2:30then also a sense of tracking and of
-
2:30 - 2:32policing and just making people aware
-
2:32 - 2:34that these technologies have very
-
2:34 - 2:36accurate information about where we are
-
2:36 - 2:41and who we are.
-
2:41 - 2:43What I'm interested in is in
-
2:43 - 2:45self-representation, the idea that it is
-
2:45 - 2:47the people who make the decisions about
-
2:47 - 2:49what the contents will be. What you're
-
2:49 - 2:52actually seeing is what people have said
-
2:52 - 2:57and you too can be part of that dialogue
