How to Know You Have the Holy Spirit - Tim Conway

  • 0:02 - 0:09
    1 John 3.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
And I had hoped to deal this morning
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    with testing the spirits.
  • 0:14 - 0:20
But as I wrestled with what exactly
  • 0:20 - 0:29
    I should pull out of
    these verses and stress,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
I was somewhat convinced that I should not
  • 0:31 - 0:34
move beyond chapter 3 into 4.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    Lord willing, next week,
  • 0:36 - 0:40
I intend to deal with testing the spirits.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
I want to kind of transition
    into that today
  • 0:43 - 0:45
by looking at these last two verses
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    of 1 John 3.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    Let's read them together.
  • 0:49 - 0:54
    "And this is His commandment,
  • 0:54 - 1:02
that we believe in the name
    of His Son Jesus Christ."
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    Now, that's interesting.
  • 1:04 - 1:09
I'll just pause right here for a moment.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
I've always looked at this as kind of
  • 1:11 - 1:15
a companion verse to that which we find
  • 1:15 - 1:18
in Acts 17 where we are commanded -
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    "God commands all men
    everywhere to repent."
  • 1:20 - 1:23
Here we have a commandment to believe.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
Yes, we are invited to believe.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
Yes, God exhorts us to believe.
  • 1:28 - 1:33
He earnestly pleads with us to believe.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    He reasons with us.
  • 1:34 - 1:39
    "Come, let us reason together."
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    But remember, behind God's invitation,
  • 1:42 - 1:44
when the people didn't show up
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    to the banquet,
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    the Master was angry.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    It's expected that you will
    answer the invitation.
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    It's commanded.
  • 1:54 - 2:00
Isn't it amazing God has to command us
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    to not go to hell?
  • 2:02 - 2:06
God has to command us to have life.
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    Do you recognize that?
  • 2:07 - 2:10
You are not at liberty to go to hell.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
Did you ever think about that?
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    God commands us
  • 2:14 - 2:17
to believe on His Son and be saved.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
And, we've been looking at this:
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    "...To love one another,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    just as He commanded us."
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    Now, notice this,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    "Whoever keeps His commandments
  • 2:27 - 2:31
abides in God and God in him."
  • 2:31 - 2:35
And this is what I want us to focus on.
  • 2:35 - 2:36
We've been looking at those things.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    Remember? I told you before,
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    John is circular.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    He's like the bee that
    flies around the flower.
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    He keeps hitting the same
    things over and over.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    Whereas sometimes as he's circling,
  • 2:48 - 2:52
he begins to introduce some new truth.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
Well, here in this last sentence
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    of 1 John 3,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    John introduces something to us
  • 3:01 - 3:04
that he has not yet introduced.
  • 3:04 - 3:08
"By this we know that He..."
  • 3:08 - 3:10
I'll just put "God" in there.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
"By this we know that God abides in us,
  • 3:14 - 3:20
by the Spirit whom He has given us."
  • 3:20 - 3:22
That's where I want our attention.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    That last sentence.
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    Now, let's think about this.
  • 3:25 - 3:29
"By this we know that He abides in us."
  • 3:29 - 3:30
Now, that may just seem -
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    He abides in us.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    Stop and think.
  • 3:35 - 3:40
    He abides in us.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    We have Scripture.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    We have Scripture.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
We live in an age - and I'm sure
  • 3:47 - 3:49
all the ages have been like this
  • 3:49 - 3:51
ever since man has fallen -
  • 3:51 - 3:55
we're so circled by the ideas of the world
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    and by the deceptions
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    and by people's opinions.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
But we have the Word of God.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    We can come to it.
    We can stand on it.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    This is truth.
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    That's why we preach.
  • 4:06 - 4:07
Have you ever thought about it?
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    The foolishness of preaching?
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    Do you ever think about
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    you guys actually come to
    this place every week
  • 4:16 - 4:18
and you sit there and you actually listen
  • 4:18 - 4:21
to a guy that stands in a pulpit.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
Does it ever just once in a while
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    you think that's ludicrous
    that we do that?
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    Why do we do that?
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    Well, because God designed it.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
But see, what it is, it's
    the channel of truth.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
Because I'm not preaching to you without
  • 4:34 - 4:36
this book in front of me.
  • 4:36 - 4:37
    I have this thing here.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    The idea of a preacher
  • 4:39 - 4:41
is somebody who is able to come up
  • 4:41 - 4:42
and stand before you and give you
  • 4:42 - 4:45
the facts as they are found in this book.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    That's what we do.
  • 4:47 - 4:48
That's what this is all about.
  • 4:48 - 4:51
This is all about giving you a steady diet
  • 4:51 - 4:53
of God's Word - not of my opinions.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
And the beauty is we can dive in here
  • 4:56 - 4:57
wherever we dive into this book,
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    we find truth.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
And one of the truths that we find
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    repeatedly in 1 John
  • 5:03 - 5:07
is that the Bible does not shy away
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    from defining Christianity.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    Over and over and over.
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    I mean, we need this.
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    We need this.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
Because we've got religion all around us
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    that doesn't correctly
    define Christianity.
  • 5:18 - 5:20
We've got a world that looks out there -
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    they've got all their opinions.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    We've got the news.
The news has ideas about Christians.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    Who was it?
  • 5:26 - 5:27
    Oh, it was Brandon Davidson
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    who just did a message
    on Coptic Christians.
  • 5:29 - 5:31
You know how they were making a big deal
  • 5:31 - 5:33
about the Coptic Christians in Egypt
  • 5:33 - 5:36
because a number of them were beheaded
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    by ISIS?
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    And Brandon responded by showing
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    that these Coptic Christians
  • 5:43 - 5:48
    don't really fit the definition
    of biblical Christianity.
  • 5:48 - 5:51
    But you see, the world,
    they interpret things
  • 5:51 - 5:53
however they want to interpret them.
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    But, John knows -
  • 5:55 - 5:57
God knows who inspired John -
  • 5:57 - 6:00
that we live in a world
  • 6:00 - 6:03
where we need to be reminded
    again and again and again
  • 6:03 - 6:04
    what true Christianity looks like.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    That's what we have.
    We need the facts.
  • 6:06 - 6:08
Our only hope in this world -
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    is it not true?
  • 6:09 - 6:11
Our only hope in this world rests
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    in being a Christian.
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    There is no hope outside
    of being a Christian.
  • 6:16 - 6:19
    There is no other hope.
  • 6:19 - 6:22
    And so it's important that
    we define what it is.
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    The title of my message:
"How You Know You're a Christian."
  • 6:25 - 6:27
Now, obviously, John's been showing us
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    numerous ways we can
    know we're a Christian.
  • 6:29 - 6:31
What are some of the other proofs?
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    1 John 2:3 - you can just
    glance right there.
  • 6:33 - 6:36
You're right here in 1 John,
but we've already looked at these.
  • 6:36 - 6:38
"By this we know that we
    have come to know Him..."
  • 6:38 - 6:41
How? "If we keep His commandments."
  • 6:41 - 6:46
We read that in v. 23.
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    V. 24, "Whoever keeps His commandments
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    abides in God."
  • 6:50 - 6:51
(There at the beginning of v. 24.)
  • 6:51 - 6:53
We saw it back in 1 John 2:3.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    "This we know, that we
    have come to know Him,
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    if we keep His commandments."
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    Again, this is kind of
    reiterated in 1 John 2:5.
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    "Whoever keeps His Word...
  • 7:02 - 7:07
in him truly the love of God is perfected.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
By this we may know that we are in Him."
  • 7:09 - 7:11
See, you get these: "We know."
  • 7:11 - 7:12
    "By this we know..."
  • 7:12 - 7:13
"We know that we know Him
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    if we keep His commandments."
  • 7:15 - 7:17
    "We know we know Him
    if we keep His Word."
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    1 John 2:29,
  • 7:19 - 7:20
    "You may be sure
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    that everyone who practices righteousness
  • 7:22 - 7:23
    has been born of Him."
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    So you've got this:
    "keeping His commandments,"
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    "keeping His Word,"
    "practicing righteousness."
  • 7:27 - 7:30
1 John 3:14, "We know that we've passed
  • 7:30 - 7:31
out of death into life," how?
  • 7:31 - 7:33
How can you know you're a Christian?
  • 7:33 - 7:35
How can you know you've truly
    passed from death to life?
  • 7:35 - 7:36
    "Because we love the brothers."
  • 7:36 - 7:39
You see, he's been hitting this all along.
  • 7:39 - 7:43
What we have here is we have a new one.
  • 7:43 - 7:47
    We have a new proof.
  • 7:47 - 7:48
Before we look at the proof,
  • 7:48 - 7:50
I just want you to see something
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    about what a Christian is.
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    I think sometimes we
    need to stop and think,
  • 7:54 - 7:57
    what is a Christian?
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    Well, somebody that's been saved.
  • 7:59 - 8:01
Yeah, but we have to think about
  • 8:01 - 8:07
what it is that we've been saved from.
  • 8:07 - 8:09
Do you ever recognize when Adam
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    would walk in the garden
  • 8:12 - 8:14
in the cool of the day,
  • 8:14 - 8:19
    what happened?
  • 8:19 - 8:24
God came to him and walked with him.
  • 8:24 - 8:28
Have you ever thought about what he lost
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    when he fell into sin?
  • 8:31 - 8:37
    Brethren, look at chapter 3:24
  • 8:37 - 8:40
    and the beginning of
    the last sentence there.
  • 8:40 - 8:45
"By this we know that He abides in us."
  • 8:45 - 8:46
John wants us to be clear
  • 8:46 - 8:48
about what it means to be a Christian,
  • 8:48 - 8:56
and here in this last verse of 1 John 3,
  • 8:56 - 8:59
    here is the basic premise.
  • 8:59 - 9:05
A Christian is a home for God.
  • 9:05 - 9:07
Let that sink in a second.
  • 9:07 - 9:08
I mean, that's what it talks about.
  • 9:08 - 9:12
    Abiding. God abides.
  • 9:12 - 9:13
You look up the meaning of that word.
  • 9:13 - 9:18
That's to make a home with.
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    John is saying, Christian,
    do you understand,
  • 9:21 - 9:25
    you are a dwelling
    place for the Most High?
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    Does Paul not say,
  • 9:27 - 9:30
    "you are God's temple"?
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    God dwells in you.
  • 9:32 - 9:33
That's what it is to be a Christian.
  • 9:33 - 9:36
    God comes to us.
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    God lives in us.
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    God makes His temple -
  • 9:39 - 9:41
we are the dwelling place of God.
  • 9:41 - 9:43
    That's what we lost.
  • 9:43 - 9:45
That's what Adam lost when he fell.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
We lost God. We lost God with us.
  • 9:47 - 9:51
We lost the life of God
  • 9:51 - 9:53
in the soul of man - abiding in us,
  • 9:53 - 9:55
dwelling with us, communing with us,
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    communicating, fellowshipping with us.
  • 9:57 - 10:00
    We lost Him.
  • 10:00 - 10:01
    Like the KJV says -
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    God says to Abraham,
  • 10:03 - 10:06
"I am thy exceeding great reward."
  • 10:06 - 10:08
That's the reward. That's the treasure.
  • 10:08 - 10:12
It is Christ. It is God. It is the Spirit.
  • 10:12 - 10:16
It is this Triune Godhead dwelling in us.
  • 10:16 - 10:20
    Manifestly dwelling in us.
  • 10:20 - 10:21
That's what this is all about.
  • 10:21 - 10:25
That's what he's laying on the table here.
  • 10:25 - 10:29
Brethren, we need to face the reality
  • 10:29 - 10:30
of what a Christian truly is.
  • 10:30 - 10:33
A Christian is no ordinary man
  • 10:33 - 10:35
    like everybody else out there.
  • 10:35 - 10:38
    We're not just like everybody
else, but we go to church.
  • 10:38 - 10:41
    Brethren, think with me.
  • 10:41 - 10:46
    Think with me just about
    dwelling places of God.
  • 10:46 - 10:49
I mean, if you think in Scripture,
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    burning bush.
  • 10:51 - 10:54
God dwelt in the burning bush.
  • 10:54 - 10:56
    Moses sees a burning bush.
  • 10:56 - 10:58
It's burning. It doesn't get consumed.
  • 10:58 - 11:00
I'm going to go over and check that out.
  • 11:00 - 11:02
    And God says, "Stop,
    Moses. Stop right there.
  • 11:02 - 11:05
You take your shoes off your feet."
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    Why? Because where God dwells,
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    it's holy ground.
  • 11:09 - 11:11
You think about the holy of holies
  • 11:11 - 11:14
    inside the tabernacle.
  • 11:14 - 11:17
The shekinah glory was so intense,
  • 11:17 - 11:21
you did not go in there or you died -
  • 11:21 - 11:22
except one man once a year
  • 11:22 - 11:25
    and only with blood.
  • 11:25 - 11:28
    The place where God
    dwells is a holy place.
  • 11:28 - 11:30
    It is a fearful place.
  • 11:30 - 11:33
It is a place unlike all other places.
  • 11:33 - 11:35
    Think about Heaven.
  • 11:35 - 11:38
Heaven is the place where we think of
  • 11:38 - 11:40
    where God dwells.
  • 11:40 - 11:44
And Isaiah looks at it as His beautiful
  • 11:44 - 11:46
    and holy habitation.
  • 11:46 - 11:48
That's what it's like where God dwells.
  • 11:48 - 11:50
And then you think about this.
  • 11:50 - 11:54
John says to be a Christian
  • 11:54 - 12:00
is to be one of these places -
  • 12:00 - 12:03
    we are the temple.
  • 12:03 - 12:05
Inside that temple was the same thing
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    that was inside that tabernacle.
  • 12:07 - 12:08
    The tabernacle became the temple.
  • 12:08 - 12:10
Inside there is the holy of holies.
  • 12:10 - 12:13
    It is where the manifest
    glory of God dwells.
  • 12:13 - 12:15
And what we are being told in Scripture
  • 12:15 - 12:18
    is we are that temple.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
You see what God saves people for -
  • 12:20 - 12:22
    to inhabit them; to dwell with them;
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    to walk with them; to fellowship;
  • 12:24 - 12:26
    to manifest His glory there.
  • 12:26 - 12:28
That's what it is to be a saint.
  • 12:28 - 12:30
It's not this Catholic idea -
  • 12:30 - 12:32
Saint Anthony - we were talking about
  • 12:32 - 12:34
meanings of names the other day.
  • 12:34 - 12:35
    San Antonio. What's that?
  • 12:35 - 12:37
I don't even know who Antonio was.
  • 12:37 - 12:41
It might not have even been
    a true saint whatsoever,
  • 12:41 - 12:43
but we have true saints in here.
  • 12:43 - 12:44
    And what does it mean?
  • 12:44 - 12:47
To be a saint is to be a holy one.
  • 12:47 - 12:52
We're holy ones because we are
    the place where God dwells.
  • 12:52 - 12:54
    What is a Christian?
  • 12:54 - 12:55
We need to come back to that
  • 12:55 - 12:57
    again and again and again.
  • 12:57 - 12:58
We need to be clear on this.
  • 12:58 - 13:00
We are the church of the living God.
  • 13:00 - 13:03
If there is going to be
    somebody in this world
  • 13:03 - 13:04
    that need to be faithful
  • 13:04 - 13:06
    to be communicating truth,
  • 13:06 - 13:07
    it's got to be us.
  • 13:07 - 13:09
It's got to be those of us
that have the Word of God.
  • 13:09 - 13:10
    What is a Christian?
  • 13:10 - 13:12
    A Christian is this -
  • 13:12 - 13:15
is a Christian a moral person?
  • 13:15 - 13:17
Is a Christian simply a good person?
  • 13:17 - 13:20
Is it simply a member of this church?
  • 13:20 - 13:21
    No.
  • 13:21 - 13:23
    That's not it.
  • 13:23 - 13:28
A Christian is one who God comes to
  • 13:28 - 13:30
    and manifests His presence in.
  • 13:30 - 13:32
    This is a spiritual reality.
  • 13:32 - 13:35
The life of God possesses them.
  • 13:35 - 13:36
    Now, here's the thing.
  • 13:36 - 13:38
Here's what you need to see
  • 13:38 - 13:41
in the last part of the last sentence.
  • 13:41 - 13:43
    Read it with me.
  • 13:43 - 13:46
"By this we know that He abides in us."
  • 13:46 - 13:50
By this we know we are a temple of God.
  • 13:50 - 13:53
By this we know we are
    His holy habitation.
  • 13:53 - 13:55
    How?
  • 13:55 - 14:00
"By the Spirit whom He has given to us."
  • 14:00 - 14:04
    See, John says, your
    Christianity can be proven.
  • 14:04 - 14:05
    That's what he says here.
  • 14:05 - 14:06
If you want proof of the fact
  • 14:06 - 14:08
    that a man is a Christian -
  • 14:08 - 14:10
one who has God dwelling in him -
  • 14:10 - 14:12
    John says here it is.
  • 14:12 - 14:15
    Every individual who
    possesses the Holy Spirit
  • 14:15 - 14:17
    may know that he himself
  • 14:17 - 14:21
is such a dwelling place for God.
  • 14:21 - 14:24
But then of course, the next question:
  • 14:24 - 14:27
Well, how can I know if
    I possess the Spirit?
  • 14:27 - 14:31
But I think you can all feel this,
  • 14:31 - 14:35
John expects that we can tell.
  • 14:35 - 14:38
    Don't you get that feel?
  • 14:38 - 14:41
    By this you can know
    that God abides in you,
  • 14:41 - 14:43
    how?
  • 14:43 - 14:45
"By the Spirit whom He has given us."
  • 14:45 - 14:47
He expects us to be able to know
  • 14:47 - 14:48
    if we have the Spirit.
  • 14:48 - 14:50
You can see that right off.
  • 14:50 - 14:56
    Every individual who
    possesses the Holy Spirit -
  • 14:56 - 14:59
    he believes he's going to
    know they possess Him.
  • 14:59 - 15:02
    That's the proof.
  • 15:02 - 15:05
And that's the proof that God
has taken up residence in us.
  • 15:05 - 15:06
    How can we know?
    What is the proof?
  • 15:06 - 15:08
    Holy Spirit.
  • 15:08 - 15:09
He's certainly not the only proof,
  • 15:09 - 15:11
but it's one of the proofs.
  • 15:11 - 15:13
You know this very well, many of you.
  • 15:13 - 15:15
Romans 8:9, "Anyone who does not have
  • 15:15 - 15:18
    the Spirit of Christ does
    not belong to Him."
  • 15:18 - 15:19
    So here it is.
  • 15:19 - 15:23
We're face to face with this
    great truth of Scripture.
  • 15:23 - 15:28
You have the Spirit or you don't.
  • 15:28 - 15:30
    If you have the Spirit,
  • 15:30 - 15:32
    God abides in you.
  • 15:32 - 15:36
    If you don't, He doesn't.
  • 15:36 - 15:38
That's what he's laid on the table here.
  • 15:38 - 15:41
    It's very clear.
  • 15:41 - 15:46
    This is our Christian reality.
  • 15:46 - 15:49
    We have the Holy Spirit.
  • 15:49 - 15:50
    It's essential.
  • 15:50 - 15:51
    The Holy Spirit is essential
  • 15:51 - 15:52
    to your Christian life,
  • 15:52 - 15:54
    to your Christian standing,
  • 15:54 - 15:56
    to your Christian experience.
  • 15:56 - 15:58
    I'm afraid we forget
    how essential this is.
  • 15:58 - 16:00
I forget how essential this is.
  • 16:00 - 16:01
    You know what?
  • 16:01 - 16:03
Every time I read through John
  • 16:03 - 16:05
and I come across our Lord Jesus' words
  • 16:05 - 16:08
where He says to His disciples,
  • 16:08 - 16:10
"Nevertheless, I tell you the truth,
  • 16:10 - 16:15
it is to your advantage that I go away."
  • 16:15 - 16:18
Why? Why is it to our advantage?
  • 16:18 - 16:20
"For if I do not go away, the Helper -
  • 16:20 - 16:22
(or the Comforter) - will not come to you.
  • 16:22 - 16:25
But if I go, I will send Him to you."
  • 16:25 - 16:28
I often want Jesus to come.
  • 16:28 - 16:30
I'm out in the field praying.
  • 16:30 - 16:32
    I want Jesus to come.
  • 16:32 - 16:36
I long to be like the
    disciples, like John,
  • 16:36 - 16:39
who could lay at the breast of Christ.
  • 16:39 - 16:41
    I want that.
  • 16:41 - 16:43
    Don't you want it?
  • 16:43 - 16:45
    I mean, I want that,
  • 16:45 - 16:47
and when I come to this,
  • 16:47 - 16:49
    I find I don't fully believe it.
  • 16:49 - 16:51
    Because I want that.
  • 16:51 - 16:53
    Because I don't have what I want.
  • 16:53 - 16:56
I want to be able to touch.
I want to be able to see.
  • 16:56 - 16:58
I want to be able to talk.
  • 16:58 - 17:01
    We want that!
  • 17:01 - 17:05
And so when I come across
this verse time and again -
  • 17:05 - 17:08
you know, we have to sit back and say,
  • 17:08 - 17:12
I need to believe that that's true.
  • 17:12 - 17:15
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 17:15 - 17:18
Listen, Jesus is saying having the Spirit
  • 17:18 - 17:21
    is more advantageous to you
  • 17:21 - 17:24
than to have Him do the things He did,
  • 17:24 - 17:27
    incarnate, walking with His disciples,
  • 17:27 - 17:29
    the way He did.
  • 17:29 - 17:30
    This is better.
  • 17:30 - 17:33
    This is more advantageous.
  • 17:33 - 17:34
    We need to believe it.
  • 17:34 - 17:37
    Which means, there's some advantage.
  • 17:37 - 17:40
And this is where John is pulling from.
  • 17:40 - 17:42
There is an advantage in your life
  • 17:42 - 17:45
    that is observable.
  • 17:45 - 17:49
And you can tell where that advantage is.
  • 17:49 - 17:52
You can tell where the Spirit is.
  • 17:52 - 17:56
    And by that, by the
    evidences of His presence,
  • 17:56 - 17:57
you can know that you are one of these
  • 17:57 - 17:59
    dwelling places of God.
  • 17:59 - 18:03
That's his basic argument through here.
  • 18:03 - 18:05
And we see this truth reaffirmed
  • 18:05 - 18:06
    in chapter 4:13.
  • 18:06 - 18:08
    You can just look there.
  • 18:08 - 18:10
1 John 4:13, "By this we know
  • 18:10 - 18:13
    that we abide in Him
  • 18:13 - 18:15
    and He in us
  • 18:15 - 18:20
because He has given us of His Spirit."
  • 18:20 - 18:22
So, the thing I want to ask is this -
  • 18:22 - 18:24
this is the next obvious question.
  • 18:24 - 18:30
What sort of proof is this?
  • 18:30 - 18:33
I mean, you say to me,
    "how can I know I'm a Christian?"
  • 18:33 - 18:36
And I say to you, "by the Holy Spirit."
  • 18:36 - 18:38
What sort of proof is that?
  • 18:38 - 18:40
I mean, John the Baptist said this:
  • 18:40 - 18:44
God told me the One upon whom I see
  • 18:44 - 18:48
the Holy Spirit descend is Him.
  • 18:48 - 18:53
    Okay, John saw the Spirit
    descend like a dove
  • 18:53 - 18:55
and it remained on Jesus Christ.
  • 18:55 - 18:56
    And God had told him,
  • 18:56 - 18:58
    you're going to know the Messiah;
  • 18:58 - 19:00
you're going to know the One
    you're the forerunner to
  • 19:00 - 19:02
because the Spirit of God is
    going to descend on Him
  • 19:02 - 19:04
    and rest there.
  • 19:04 - 19:06
    But how do we know?
  • 19:06 - 19:08
I mean, how do we know by the Spirit?
  • 19:08 - 19:14
    We don't see that.
    I've never seen that.
  • 19:14 - 19:16
    What are the evidences?
  • 19:16 - 19:17
What sort of proof is this?
  • 19:17 - 19:20
Well, I'll tell you, I have twelve.
  • 19:20 - 19:22
Jesus said it's to our advantage.
  • 19:22 - 19:24
    Well, there are advantages.
  • 19:24 - 19:26
    There's proofs.
  • 19:26 - 19:28
And I get all these from Scripture.
  • 19:28 - 19:30
    I've got twelve of them.
  • 19:30 - 19:33
And I don't want to go any
    further than this today.
  • 19:33 - 19:36
I'm going to give you twelve proofs
  • 19:36 - 19:38
    that Scripture gives to us
  • 19:38 - 19:40
that are evidences of the presence
  • 19:40 - 19:42
of the Holy Spirit, which in turn
  • 19:42 - 19:44
is evidence that God abides in us
  • 19:44 - 19:46
    and we abide in Him.
  • 19:46 - 19:48
    That we're real; we're genuine.
  • 19:48 - 19:51
    So what are these things?
  • 19:51 - 19:53
    What are they?
  • 19:53 - 19:56
How to know you are a Christian.
  • 19:56 - 19:59
    That's the title.
  • 19:59 - 20:01
Or, how to know you have the Spirit
  • 20:01 - 20:04
by which you know you are a Christian.
  • 20:04 - 20:07
    So here's the first one.
  • 20:07 - 20:11
    Jesus Christ told us this.
  • 20:11 - 20:14
John 16:8 - you can mark these down.
  • 20:14 - 20:16
You can try to turn to all of them,
but I'm going to go through them fast
  • 20:16 - 20:17
and I think by the time you get there,
  • 20:17 - 20:19
    I'm already going to be
    done with the point.
  • 20:19 - 20:21
So, you might just want to hear these.
  • 20:21 - 20:23
    I'll give you the reference
because I want you to see
  • 20:23 - 20:25
    that all of these are
    truly coming from Scripture.
  • 20:25 - 20:27
    John 16:8,
  • 20:27 - 20:31
    The Holy Spirit -
    "He will convict the world
  • 20:31 - 20:36
    concerning sin and
    righteousness and judgment.
  • 20:36 - 20:38
    Now, you think here.
  • 20:38 - 20:43
We're going along in our life.
  • 20:43 - 20:48
We're going along happy in our sin.
  • 20:48 - 20:49
    Remember that?
  • 20:49 - 20:51
    Remember how that was?
  • 20:51 - 20:53
You're looking forward to your sin.
  • 20:53 - 20:55
    But then something happens.
  • 20:55 - 20:59
    What happens?
  • 20:59 - 21:00
    Something happens.
  • 21:00 - 21:03
    Something happens in the conscience.
  • 21:03 - 21:10
    Suddenly, there's a disturbance.
  • 21:10 - 21:11
    That's what conviction is.
  • 21:11 - 21:14
    It's a disturbance.
  • 21:14 - 21:18
    Suddenly, we're troubled.
  • 21:18 - 21:21
    We feel something.
  • 21:21 - 21:26
    Sin suddenly is not just
  • 21:26 - 21:27
    the vomit of the dog
  • 21:27 - 21:30
that I want to run over and
    can't wait to get to.
  • 21:30 - 21:33
    There's a hesitation.
  • 21:33 - 21:35
    That doesn't mean I totally
lose the pull of that sin,
  • 21:35 - 21:38
but there's a check in my soul.
  • 21:38 - 21:41
    Something isn't right any longer.
  • 21:41 - 21:44
That's what he's talking about here.
  • 21:44 - 21:45
    Conviction.
  • 21:45 - 21:47
    There's a gnawing disturbance.
  • 21:47 - 21:50
    There may be a hollowness
  • 21:50 - 21:51
    or an emptiness.
  • 21:51 - 21:52
    Things are not right.
  • 21:52 - 21:54
    Something is wrong.
  • 21:54 - 21:55
    Something is happening.
  • 21:55 - 21:57
    This is the Spirit's doing.
  • 21:57 - 22:00
I used to be able to
    easily dismiss my sin.
  • 22:00 - 22:03
I could justify it like that.
  • 22:03 - 22:07
    But then something happened.
  • 22:07 - 22:12
And you can't just dismiss it so easily.
  • 22:12 - 22:14
I used to think of God out there.
  • 22:14 - 22:16
    Oh, He understands my sin.
  • 22:16 - 22:18
    He just overlooks it.
  • 22:18 - 22:20
    But now something had happened.
  • 22:20 - 22:22
    I could no longer enjoy
my sin as I once did.
  • 22:22 - 22:24
    I'm unsettled.
  • 22:24 - 22:28
    This is what Jesus says
    the Holy Spirit will do.
  • 22:28 - 22:30
You know, my friends, my family
  • 22:30 - 22:31
    couldn't understand me.
  • 22:31 - 22:33
You know, the people out there
  • 22:33 - 22:35
    still enjoy all their sin
  • 22:35 - 22:37
who are your companions in the sin,
  • 22:37 - 22:38
who run with you in the sin,
  • 22:38 - 22:40
suddenly there's a check in your spirit -
  • 22:40 - 22:41
    they don't understand you.
  • 22:41 - 22:43
    What's wrong with you?
  • 22:43 - 22:45
    You need another drink.
  • 22:45 - 22:46
    Shrug that off.
  • 22:46 - 22:50
But you can't shrug it off. Why?
Because of the Spirit of God.
  • 22:50 - 22:54
    And He's speaking.
  • 22:54 - 22:56
    What's the next thing?
  • 22:56 - 22:58
    That's not all.
  • 22:58 - 22:59
    There's something else.
  • 22:59 - 23:01
    We read in Romans 8:14,
  • 23:01 - 23:03
"All who are led by the Spirit of God
  • 23:03 - 23:05
    are sons of God."
  • 23:05 - 23:07
So the Spirit not only convicts,
  • 23:07 - 23:11
    the Spirit leads.
  • 23:11 - 23:13
    I mean, something else happens.
  • 23:13 - 23:18
Suddenly - well, it may not be so sudden.
  • 23:18 - 23:20
    Sometimes it's not as sudden.
  • 23:20 - 23:22
    In some it's sudden.
  • 23:22 - 23:27
In some, it happens almost undiscernibly
  • 23:27 - 23:28
like the rising of the sun,
  • 23:28 - 23:29
    but it's happening.
  • 23:29 - 23:31
    What's happening?
  • 23:31 - 23:33
    Desires.
  • 23:33 - 23:36
    My desires, my impulses,
  • 23:36 - 23:41
    I'm being led in ways
    I was never led before.
  • 23:41 - 23:43
    What led me before?
  • 23:43 - 23:45
    Animal passions.
  • 23:45 - 23:47
    Base lusts.
  • 23:47 - 23:52
My desire for what I wanted led me.
  • 23:52 - 23:55
    But something happens.
  • 23:55 - 24:00
    I'm being led by desires
    I never had before.
  • 24:00 - 24:02
There's impulses that shoot through me
  • 24:02 - 24:06
    that are rising beyond
    my bodily appetites.
  • 24:06 - 24:08
I'm being pulled by something else.
  • 24:08 - 24:10
And you know what? You know it.
  • 24:10 - 24:12
You know it. It's different now.
  • 24:12 - 24:13
And people are looking at you -
  • 24:13 - 24:14
    what's wrong with you?
  • 24:14 - 24:16
    Well, you feel it inside.
  • 24:16 - 24:17
    I'm being pulled.
  • 24:17 - 24:19
I'm being pulled away from that sin.
  • 24:19 - 24:22
    It's a pull towards God.
    That's what it is.
  • 24:22 - 24:24
It's a pull not just forward,
  • 24:24 - 24:25
    it's a pull upward.
  • 24:25 - 24:27
    You feel something happening.
  • 24:27 - 24:29
    There's leadership.
  • 24:29 - 24:31
    There's conviction. There's leadership.
  • 24:31 - 24:33
    How about the thought life?
  • 24:33 - 24:36
You know, in Romans 8:5, we get this:
  • 24:36 - 24:39
"Those who live according to the Spirit
  • 24:39 - 24:41
    set their minds on the
    things of the Spirit."
  • 24:41 - 24:44
So, if you live according to the Spirit -
    what does that mean?
  • 24:44 - 24:46
    According to His power;
    according to His presence;
  • 24:46 - 24:48
    according to His operation in your life;
  • 24:48 - 24:49
    what happens to your mind?
  • 24:49 - 24:51
    What happens to your thoughts?
  • 24:51 - 24:54
The mind is drawn towards things of God.
  • 24:54 - 24:57
You know that! You know that!
  • 24:57 - 24:59
    Not only did conviction come;
  • 24:59 - 25:00
not only did this lead come,
  • 25:00 - 25:02
    but suddenly your mind -
  • 25:02 - 25:06
you are thinking about spiritual things.
  • 25:06 - 25:08
    They're on your mind now.
  • 25:08 - 25:10
You wake up and you start
    thinking about eternity.
  • 25:10 - 25:12
    You start thinking that
there is a God out there
  • 25:12 - 25:14
    who I'm going to have
    to give an account to.
  • 25:14 - 25:17
    You start thinking about
what is the cross all about.
  • 25:17 - 25:19
    What did Christ actually do?
  • 25:19 - 25:20
    You're troubled.
  • 25:20 - 25:23
    You're thinking of eternity.
    You're thinking of judgment day.
  • 25:23 - 25:27
    Suddenly the mind is going
    to these other things.
  • 25:27 - 25:30
    Any interest in religion before,
  • 25:30 - 25:32
    you know it was mechanical.
  • 25:32 - 25:33
How can I do my thing?
  • 25:33 - 25:35
    I remember how it was.
  • 25:35 - 25:37
It's this idea of the good and the bad
  • 25:37 - 25:39
and hopefully the good will outweigh.
  • 25:39 - 25:41
Once in awhile, you need to
  • 25:41 - 25:43
do something kind for one another.
  • 25:43 - 25:44
    But suddenly, your thoughts
  • 25:44 - 25:46
    are not just mechanical thoughts
  • 25:46 - 25:50
    about religion.
  • 25:50 - 25:53
    The thoughts.
  • 25:53 - 25:57
The Spirit pulls the mind towards God
  • 25:57 - 26:00
and towards the Word of God.
  • 26:00 - 26:03
    The thought life.
  • 26:03 - 26:04
    Led to think about God
  • 26:04 - 26:06
    and think about sin
  • 26:06 - 26:07
    and think about eternity
  • 26:07 - 26:08
    and think about judgment.
  • 26:08 - 26:12
    One becomes amazed.
  • 26:12 - 26:13
    Isn't that what happens?
  • 26:13 - 26:16
We wake up and suddenly we're amazed
  • 26:16 - 26:19
that we didn't think about the things
  • 26:19 - 26:20
    that we're thinking about right now;
  • 26:20 - 26:24
that we walked so long in the dark.
  • 26:24 - 26:27
    Then, oh, there's more.
  • 26:27 - 26:28
    What?
  • 26:28 - 26:33
In John 16:14, Jesus says this.
  • 26:33 - 26:40
The Holy Spirit will glorify Me.
  • 26:40 - 26:42
You know what? We basically spend
  • 26:42 - 26:45
    our lost lives dismissing
  • 26:45 - 26:48
    the Christ of the Bible.
  • 26:48 - 26:51
    Trivializing Him.
  • 26:51 - 26:56
    But then, it happens.
  • 26:56 - 27:04
    I mean, it happens.
  • 27:04 - 27:09
    Suddenly, gradually, it happens.
  • 27:09 - 27:19
    We see Christ as we've
    never seen Him before.
  • 27:19 - 27:27
    It sets us back.
  • 27:27 - 27:32
The Spirit causes us to see.
  • 27:32 - 27:39
    He doesn't just make it
    possible for us to see.
  • 27:39 - 27:41
    He sets Christ before us
  • 27:41 - 27:46
and gives us eyes to see Him.
  • 27:46 - 27:48
    That happens.
  • 27:48 - 27:53
He causes us to wake up.
  • 27:53 - 27:56
I mean, there suddenly is an attraction.
  • 27:56 - 27:58
    We behold a beauty,
  • 27:58 - 28:03
a magnificence in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 28:03 - 28:06
    Christians, do you
    remember that happening?
  • 28:06 - 28:09
He's no longer just a historical figure.
  • 28:09 - 28:13
    He is the historical figure.
  • 28:13 - 28:18
    You recognize that everything
    revolves around Him.
  • 28:18 - 28:20
    You begin to recognize,
  • 28:20 - 28:29
    wow - everything in
    Scripture is about Him!
  • 28:29 - 28:31
Everything about creation is for Him
  • 28:31 - 28:33
and in Him and through Him
  • 28:33 - 28:34
    and He sustains it all.
  • 28:34 - 28:38
    And suddenly, you just recognize,
  • 28:38 - 28:41
He's not just one among many.
  • 28:41 - 28:42
    He is the One.
  • 28:42 - 28:44
    Everything else revolves around Him.
  • 28:44 - 28:47
He is like the sun in the solar system.
  • 28:47 - 28:49
    Everything revolves around Him.
  • 28:49 - 28:51
Everything has to do with Him.
  • 28:51 - 28:53
    Everything comes back to Him.
  • 28:53 - 28:57
    However you saw it,
  • 28:57 - 29:00
Christ - when the Spirit comes,
  • 29:00 - 29:02
    Christ just is getting bigger
  • 29:02 - 29:07
and bigger and bigger and bigger.
  • 29:07 - 29:08
    That's what happens.
  • 29:08 - 29:10
    There's no greater proof
    of the Spirit's presence
  • 29:10 - 29:16
in an individual or in a church than this.
  • 29:16 - 29:18
You want to look for evidences
  • 29:18 - 29:20
of whether the Spirit of God -
  • 29:20 - 29:25
    people love to talk
    about the Spirit of God,
  • 29:25 - 29:29
but one thing we find about the Spirit,
  • 29:29 - 29:32
    He is not self-promoting.
  • 29:32 - 29:35
    He is Christ-promoting.
  • 29:35 - 29:37
    You can tell His presence
  • 29:37 - 29:40
    not by where there's a
lot of talk about the Spirit.
  • 29:40 - 29:42
You can tell the Spirit's presence
  • 29:42 - 29:48
    when you find them
    preoccupied with Christ.
  • 29:48 - 29:51
    That's where the Spirit is.
  • 29:51 - 29:55
    That's what we find here.
  • 29:55 - 29:56
    Isn't that what happens?
  • 29:56 - 30:00
You begin to find I have no hope
  • 30:00 - 30:03
    without Him.
  • 30:03 - 30:07
I begin to face all the facts about Him.
  • 30:07 - 30:08
    It is Him.
  • 30:08 - 30:10
    I recognize without the incarnation,
  • 30:10 - 30:12
there is no hope for me.
  • 30:12 - 30:15
    I recognize that if He
    doesn't go to the cross,
  • 30:15 - 30:16
    there is no hope.
  • 30:16 - 30:18
    I recognize if He doesn't
    rise from the dead,
  • 30:18 - 30:19
    there is no hope.
  • 30:19 - 30:21
I recognize Him ascending to God -
  • 30:21 - 30:23
    in that is my hope.
  • 30:23 - 30:25
All of this - what Christ did,
  • 30:25 - 30:26
    all the way through,
  • 30:26 - 30:27
my hope is built on that.
  • 30:27 - 30:29
I begin to see these things.
  • 30:29 - 30:30
    He came. He was incarnate.
  • 30:30 - 30:32
    He did these miracles.
  • 30:32 - 30:34
    He went on trial.
  • 30:34 - 30:35
    He faced Jerusalem.
  • 30:35 - 30:36
    He went there.
  • 30:36 - 30:38
They beat Him and they buffeted Him.
  • 30:38 - 30:40
    They scourged Him.
  • 30:40 - 30:41
They laid that cross on Him.
  • 30:41 - 30:43
He went up there to Calvary.
  • 30:43 - 30:46
They nailed spikes in His hands
    and they crucified Him.
  • 30:46 - 30:48
And you begin to look at all this
  • 30:48 - 30:49
    and you recognize,
  • 30:49 - 30:52
    this is not just some
    other part of history
  • 30:52 - 30:53
    to throw out there
  • 30:53 - 30:56
like the study of World War II.
  • 30:56 - 30:58
    This is it.
  • 30:58 - 31:00
    Everything revolves around this.
  • 31:00 - 31:02
    That's what the Spirit does.
  • 31:02 - 31:03
Our eyes are opened to it.
  • 31:03 - 31:05
    We're rocked by the reality.
  • 31:05 - 31:07
    They crucified Him.
  • 31:07 - 31:11
And suddenly, the Spirit does this.
  • 31:11 - 31:13
How do you relate to this?
  • 31:13 - 31:15
This is a proof of the Spirit's presence
  • 31:15 - 31:16
which in turn is the proof
  • 31:16 - 31:18
    that we are God's temple.
  • 31:18 - 31:19
    We're going along.
  • 31:19 - 31:25
    We're going along absorbed
    with all else but Christ.
  • 31:25 - 31:28
    Then something happens.
  • 31:28 - 31:31
We sing it in the song.
  • 31:31 - 31:35
    Almighty love arrests that man.
  • 31:35 - 31:39
    We're arrested.
    We're spiritually arrested.
  • 31:39 - 31:46
    And like Paul, we talked
    about a few weeks ago,
  • 31:46 - 31:48
    "Who are You, Lord?"
  • 31:48 - 31:51
    "I am Jesus."
  • 31:51 - 31:55
    And suddenly, that name...
  • 31:55 - 31:57
that name's not a curse word.
  • 31:57 - 32:00
    That name's not just
    religious terminology.
  • 32:00 - 32:03
The Spirit opens our eyes and our soul
  • 32:03 - 32:05
and draws it out to Christ.
  • 32:05 - 32:08
    The Spirit always glorifies Christ.
  • 32:08 - 32:11
    Our estimation of Christ
    is altogether reworked
  • 32:11 - 32:13
    by the power and
    influence of the Spirit.
  • 32:13 - 32:15
    This is Christianity.
  • 32:15 - 32:17
    That's Christianity.
  • 32:17 - 32:19
    Being absorbed with Christ.
  • 32:19 - 32:20
    Honoring Christ.
  • 32:20 - 32:22
    Finding in Christ our all.
  • 32:22 - 32:24
    This is the heart and
    soul of Christianity.
  • 32:24 - 32:27
Brethren, I remember how it was.
  • 32:27 - 32:28
    Suddenly Christ's deity is
  • 32:28 - 32:32
    the most important thing
    you ever imagined.
  • 32:32 - 32:34
The cross is the most important thing
  • 32:34 - 32:37
    you ever imagined.
  • 32:37 - 32:38
    The resurrection -
  • 32:38 - 32:41
    the most important
    thing you ever imagined.
  • 32:41 - 32:43
    Christ's perfect obedience -
  • 32:43 - 32:46
    the most important
    thing you ever imagined.
  • 32:46 - 32:48
    Pleasing Christ - the
    most important thing.
  • 32:48 - 32:50
You say, they can't all be most important,
  • 32:50 - 32:51
but that's the way it is.
  • 32:51 - 32:54
The Spirit shows you one thing
    about Christ after another,
  • 32:54 - 32:56
and it's like that's the greatest thing!
  • 32:56 - 32:58
    Oh, look over here!
    That's the greatest thing!
  • 32:58 - 33:00
    Because everything about
    Him is just so great
  • 33:00 - 33:01
and for the first time in your life,
  • 33:01 - 33:03
    you're made aware.
  • 33:03 - 33:07
    That's what the Spirit does.
  • 33:07 - 33:09
    What else?
  • 33:09 - 33:12
What other proofs that the Spirit's there?
  • 33:12 - 33:14
    Romans 5:5 says,
  • 33:14 - 33:17
    "God's love has been
    poured into your hearts
  • 33:17 - 33:19
    through the Holy Spirit
  • 33:19 - 33:20
who has been given to us."
  • 33:20 - 33:25
    So when the Holy Spirit
    has been given to us,
  • 33:25 - 33:31
it seems like by nature all of us -
  • 33:31 - 33:33
now, you think about this -
  • 33:33 - 33:38
by nature, all of us create a god
  • 33:38 - 33:41
    of our own imagination.
  • 33:41 - 33:43
    This god approves of us.
  • 33:43 - 33:46
    This god loves us whatever
    condition we're in.
  • 33:46 - 33:47
I mean, that's the sort of god
  • 33:47 - 33:50
that appeals to the natural man.
  • 33:50 - 33:52
    But what happens?
  • 33:52 - 33:58
The Spirit brings conviction of sin.
  • 33:58 - 34:03
    The Spirit hits our consciences.
  • 34:03 - 34:05
We're aware of sin and judgment
  • 34:05 - 34:06
    and how righteous God is
  • 34:06 - 34:08
    to bring us to judgment.
  • 34:08 - 34:10
    It breaks in upon us
  • 34:10 - 34:12
    that there is a living
    Almighty God out there
  • 34:12 - 34:13
with whom we have to do,
  • 34:13 - 34:16
and He's so holy, He can't look upon sin.
  • 34:16 - 34:18
I mean, this is what we're awakened to.
  • 34:18 - 34:20
This god of our imagination -
  • 34:20 - 34:23
like a mist that goes away.
  • 34:23 - 34:26
    Suddenly, we are face
to face with a big God.
  • 34:26 - 34:28
And what this is all about
  • 34:28 - 34:30
is when we see this holy God -
  • 34:30 - 34:33
we see this God who cannot look upon sin -
  • 34:33 - 34:34
not the God of our imagination.
  • 34:34 - 34:36
The true God. The living God.
  • 34:36 - 34:39
    The terribly holy, holy,
    holy God of Scripture
  • 34:39 - 34:43
    before whom the seraphim
    shield their faces.
  • 34:43 - 34:51
The Spirit says that God loves me.
  • 34:51 - 34:54
    He loves me!
  • 34:54 - 34:58
He gave His Son for me.
  • 34:58 - 35:01
    That's what's being communicated.
  • 35:01 - 35:06
You just look at the context of Romans 5.
  • 35:06 - 35:08
    He showed His love,
  • 35:08 - 35:11
and it's shown on the cross.
  • 35:11 - 35:14
And suddenly the Spirit communicates that.
  • 35:14 - 35:17
    I remember my brother-in-law Rick.
  • 35:17 - 35:19
He said he was laying in bed one morning,
  • 35:19 - 35:24
and just like a lightning bolt...
  • 35:24 - 35:29
he was musing on, contemplating the cross,
  • 35:29 - 35:34
and God just said, "Rick, it's for you."
  • 35:34 - 35:36
    "I did that for you."
  • 35:36 - 35:39
    That's what happens.
  • 35:39 - 35:40
    The love of God.
  • 35:40 - 35:42
He sent His Son to die for me.
  • 35:42 - 35:44
And this one's so closely related.
  • 35:44 - 35:46
    Romans 8:15
  • 35:46 - 35:49
    "You've received the Spirit
    of adoption as sons."
  • 35:49 - 35:51
    Here's the Spirit.
  • 35:51 - 35:53
The Spirit of adoption. We receive Him.
  • 35:53 - 35:54
    What does He do?
  • 35:54 - 35:57
"...By whom we cry, 'Abba, Father.'"
  • 35:57 - 36:02
    There it is.
  • 36:02 - 36:05
    God is not just some
    distant power anymore.
  • 36:05 - 36:14
    He's no longer the pushover
    god of our imaginations.
  • 36:14 - 36:17
    He's the God of Scripture.
  • 36:17 - 36:19
But He no longer presents Himself to me
  • 36:19 - 36:21
    as an angry God
  • 36:21 - 36:25
    whose wrath I'm under.
  • 36:25 - 36:31
    But now, look at that.
  • 36:31 - 36:33
    The Spirit makes us conscious
  • 36:33 - 36:37
of the fact that He who
    is the Most High God
  • 36:37 - 36:40
    is my Father.
  • 36:40 - 36:42
    He cares for me.
    He loves me.
  • 36:42 - 36:43
He sent His Son to die for me.
  • 36:43 - 36:46
I cry to Him now as a Father.
  • 36:46 - 36:49
    Father, Father.
  • 36:49 - 36:52
    What a title!
  • 36:52 - 36:55
    Christian, when you pray -
  • 36:55 - 37:04
    I hear some Christians that
    address God as God.
  • 37:04 - 37:08
    Now, theologically, there's
    nothing wrong with that.
  • 37:08 - 37:12
But it always feels impersonal to me.
  • 37:12 - 37:15
To keep addressing God repeatedly as God,
  • 37:15 - 37:19
when the Spirit comes and says,
  • 37:19 - 37:21
    He is God,
  • 37:21 - 37:24
but He makes Himself known to you
  • 37:24 - 37:25
    as your Father.
  • 37:25 - 37:27
Not just as Father - Abba.
  • 37:27 - 37:32
I mean, what an endearing word.
  • 37:32 - 37:34
    Do you know this reality?
  • 37:34 - 37:37
    Brethren, we want true Christianity.
  • 37:37 - 37:40
The kind of Christianity that God
is not just a far away power,
  • 37:40 - 37:42
not the pushover god of my mind,
  • 37:42 - 37:44
but it is the God of Scripture
  • 37:44 - 37:48
in all of His highness and transcendence
  • 37:48 - 37:49
    and vastness.
  • 37:49 - 37:53
    He's personally come to me
  • 37:53 - 37:57
and He says, "I'm your Father."
  • 37:57 - 37:59
This is an operation of the Spirit.
  • 37:59 - 38:02
By this we know God dwells
    within and we're real.
  • 38:02 - 38:05
    How about this? Romans 8:16.
  • 38:05 - 38:08
    "The Spirit Himself bears witness
  • 38:08 - 38:13
    with our spirit that
    we're children of God."
  • 38:13 - 38:15
There's the Spirit on the witness stand.
  • 38:15 - 38:18
    The devil can come
    and sling his accusations.
  • 38:18 - 38:21
    But the witness is this:
  • 38:21 - 38:24
"I own you as My own.
  • 38:24 - 38:28
You are My child. You are My son."
  • 38:28 - 38:31
    But there's still sin.
  • 38:31 - 38:33
    "Yes, but you're My child.
  • 38:33 - 38:36
I've sent My Son to die for your sin.
  • 38:36 - 38:38
    You belong to Me.
  • 38:38 - 38:40
I bought you with a price.
  • 38:40 - 38:43
I brought you into My family."
  • 38:43 - 38:50
    The Spirit bids us
  • 38:50 - 38:52
    to see this sonship.
  • 38:52 - 38:54
    He witnesses to us.
  • 38:54 - 38:56
    What does a witness do?
  • 38:56 - 38:59
What do you want a witness to
do when they go on the stand?
  • 38:59 - 39:01
Just give the facts. Tell the truth.
  • 39:01 - 39:02
    That's it.
  • 39:02 - 39:04
    That's what the Spirit's doing.
  • 39:04 - 39:06
You want to know what the truth is?
  • 39:06 - 39:09
You haven't just been saved from sin,
  • 39:09 - 39:18
    you've been saved
    from just wandering, lost.
  • 39:18 - 39:22
God has brought you into His household.
  • 39:22 - 39:24
He's your Father. You're His son.
  • 39:24 - 39:28
He's bestowed His love upon you.
  • 39:28 - 39:29
    That's it.
  • 39:29 - 39:31
    The Spirit does that.
    The Spirit witnesses.
  • 39:31 - 39:33
    How about number 8?
  • 39:33 - 39:34
    Romans 8:13,
  • 39:34 - 39:37
"By the Spirit, you put to death
  • 39:37 - 39:39
    the deeds of the body."
  • 39:39 - 39:41
If you do that, you live.
  • 39:41 - 39:42
    That's life.
  • 39:42 - 39:44
    Remember?
  • 39:44 - 39:46
    We're alive. We're Christians
    if we have the Spirit.
  • 39:46 - 39:48
    By the Spirit, we know
  • 39:48 - 39:51
    that God abides in us.
  • 39:51 - 39:53
If you have the Spirit, what do you do?
  • 39:53 - 39:56
You put to death the deeds of the body.
  • 39:56 - 40:00
The daily practice of killing sin matters
  • 40:00 - 40:03
    because it's an evidence of
whether the Spirit's there or not.
  • 40:03 - 40:05
And look, a lot of people in the world,
  • 40:05 - 40:08
they intend to make changes in their life.
  • 40:08 - 40:09
    They make New Year's resolutions
  • 40:09 - 40:11
to make changes in their life.
  • 40:11 - 40:16
    They grit their teeth to
    make changes in their life.
  • 40:16 - 40:18
But I'll tell you this, true change -
  • 40:18 - 40:21
    radical change, the purity
  • 40:21 - 40:23
that God desires from us -
  • 40:23 - 40:25
    the only way that we can do that;
  • 40:25 - 40:28
the only way that we truly
  • 40:28 - 40:33
can put off these deeds is by the Spirit.
  • 40:33 - 40:35
God's Spirit is the Holy Spirit.
  • 40:35 - 40:37
He will not leave God's people unholy.
  • 40:37 - 40:39
God's Spirit is a mighty Spirit.
  • 40:39 - 40:43
He is more powerful than our sin.
  • 40:43 - 40:45
I mean, this is the thing.
  • 40:45 - 40:48
    When the Spirit is put
    within the child of God,
  • 40:48 - 40:50
you have to think about this.
  • 40:50 - 40:53
You've got sin. You've got the Spirit.
  • 40:53 - 40:56
Sin is viewed in Scripture as
    this kind of dark force
  • 40:56 - 40:57
    or a dark lord.
  • 40:57 - 41:01
"Sin reigning in the mortal body."
  • 41:01 - 41:02
    That's how Scripture describes it.
  • 41:02 - 41:04
Then you have the Spirit who comes up
  • 41:04 - 41:07
and takes residence in the Christian.
  • 41:07 - 41:09
    You've got these competing powers,
  • 41:09 - 41:11
    but who's stronger?
  • 41:11 - 41:12
    Of course, the Spirit is.
  • 41:12 - 41:15
And the Spirit will always win.
  • 41:15 - 41:18
    The Spirit will always win.
  • 41:18 - 41:21
    He is in the business of making saints;
  • 41:21 - 41:23
    of making holy people.
  • 41:23 - 41:25
    Men can create.
  • 41:25 - 41:26
Men in their own strength -
  • 41:26 - 41:29
    think about what men in
    their own strength can do.
  • 41:29 - 41:30
Well, they can come to church.
  • 41:30 - 41:32
    They can create religious settings.
  • 41:32 - 41:33
    They can do that.
  • 41:33 - 41:35
    They may create morality
  • 41:35 - 41:39
    or formality or civility.
  • 41:39 - 41:43
    Customs, rituals, ceremonies -
  • 41:43 - 41:45
    all that's possible.
  • 41:45 - 41:47
    Church attendance, baptism.
  • 41:47 - 41:48
    But there's no mistaking it.
  • 41:48 - 41:52
Whenever and wherever somebody's desire -
  • 41:52 - 41:53
you have to think about this.
  • 41:53 - 41:56
This is really what it is.
  • 41:56 - 41:59
We're not told that the Spirit comes in
  • 41:59 - 42:01
    and turns off bodily desires.
  • 42:01 - 42:03
You know how it is we put to death
  • 42:03 - 42:05
    the deeds of this body?
  • 42:05 - 42:07
It's not because all of a sudden
  • 42:07 - 42:09
    you've lost all your longings
  • 42:09 - 42:12
to please this body and gratify this body.
  • 42:12 - 42:14
    What happens?
  • 42:14 - 42:18
    Your desires to please
    Christ become stronger.
  • 42:18 - 42:20
    That's what happens.
  • 42:20 - 42:23
    It's a battle of desire.
  • 42:23 - 42:27
And where the Spirit is -
  • 42:27 - 42:30
look, just because you get saved
  • 42:30 - 42:33
doesn't mean you lose sexual desire.
  • 42:33 - 42:35
Just because you get saved doesn't mean
  • 42:35 - 42:38
you lose desire to feel pleasure
  • 42:38 - 42:41
    or to feel relaxation;
  • 42:41 - 42:48
to feel good; to eat food; to drink.
  • 42:48 - 42:51
    The body has appetites.
  • 42:51 - 42:55
But what happens is it's like Joseph.
  • 42:55 - 42:57
    Do you think there
    was temptation in Joseph
  • 42:57 - 42:58
    when Potiphar's wife came?
  • 42:58 - 43:01
    I mean, she's the wife
  • 43:01 - 43:02
    of a high ranking official.
  • 43:02 - 43:04
    She's probably beautiful.
  • 43:04 - 43:06
    And who's going to know?
  • 43:06 - 43:08
    God's going to know.
  • 43:08 - 43:11
    And there's a desire there.
  • 43:11 - 43:15
I'm not going to sin against God this way.
  • 43:15 - 43:17
    I know He's watching.
  • 43:17 - 43:20
My fellowship with Him is more important
  • 43:20 - 43:25
than my gratifying this bodily appetite.
  • 43:25 - 43:28
And that's where the battle is won.
  • 43:28 - 43:31
    Our desire for other
    things become greater.
  • 43:31 - 43:34
And that is the proof that
  • 43:34 - 43:37
    there's just no other
    explanation when that happens
  • 43:37 - 43:39
than the Spirit of God is doing that.
  • 43:39 - 43:40
    And where He does that,
  • 43:40 - 43:42
    God has taken up residence.
  • 43:42 - 43:44
    How about number nine?
  • 43:44 - 43:45
    Christlikeness.
  • 43:45 - 43:47
    2 Corinthians 3:18
  • 43:47 - 43:48
    Many of you know this.
  • 43:48 - 43:50
    "We all with unveiled face
  • 43:50 - 43:52
beholding the glory of the Lord
  • 43:52 - 43:55
    are being transformed
    into the same image..."
  • 43:55 - 43:58
    What same image?
Well, the image of the Lord.
  • 43:58 - 44:00
"...From one degree of glory to another.
  • 44:00 - 44:02
    For this comes from
the Lord who is the Spirit."
  • 44:02 - 44:05
Here's another operation of the Spirit.
  • 44:05 - 44:07
    What does the Spirit do?
  • 44:07 - 44:10
Transforms us into the likeness of Christ.
  • 44:10 - 44:14
    Now, this is kind of
    similar to the last one.
  • 44:14 - 44:19
Killing the appetites of the body.
  • 44:19 - 44:20
    How is it similar?
  • 44:20 - 44:22
Well, it's kind of the opposite.
  • 44:22 - 44:25
This one here in 2 Corinthians comes at us
  • 44:25 - 44:27
    from the positive side,
  • 44:27 - 44:29
whereas Romans 8 comes at us
  • 44:29 - 44:30
    from the negative side.
  • 44:30 - 44:33
Romans 8 is the negative - we kill sin.
  • 44:33 - 44:38
    Here in 2 Corinthians,
    we have the positive.
  • 44:38 - 44:41
It's the image of Christ -
  • 44:41 - 44:43
    more and more resembling Him.
  • 44:43 - 44:48
    It's like the mercury
    rising in a thermometer.
  • 44:48 - 44:49
It's just going up and up and up.
  • 44:49 - 44:51
That's how it is in our life.
  • 44:51 - 44:54
    What is that?
  • 44:54 - 44:57
    Well, if you imagine,
  • 44:57 - 45:01
    sometimes people do
    these time lapse photography.
  • 45:01 - 45:03
You've seen that kind of thing?
  • 45:03 - 45:05
You know, I saw just recently,
  • 45:05 - 45:07
I was on Drudge and I
    saw somebody did that
  • 45:07 - 45:09
    on Hillary Clinton
  • 45:09 - 45:12
from when she was in her
    20's or whatever to now.
  • 45:12 - 45:15
    And they just went
    through all these photos,
  • 45:15 - 45:18
    and they kind of morphed
    them into one another.
  • 45:18 - 45:20
But you've seen time lapse photography
  • 45:20 - 45:21
maybe of a flower or something.
  • 45:21 - 45:24
But if you can do time lapse
    photography on a Christian,
  • 45:24 - 45:26
this is an operation of the Spirit.
  • 45:26 - 45:30
But if you do the time lapse,
  • 45:30 - 45:33
they are becoming more and more beautiful.
  • 45:33 - 45:37
And I'm not saying a time
    lapse on your outer body.
  • 45:37 - 45:39
Because that's getting uglier and uglier.
  • 45:39 - 45:41
I say that based on Scripture.
  • 45:41 - 45:43
    The outer man is what?
  • 45:43 - 45:46
    (Wasting away). There you go.
  • 45:46 - 45:47
    Except for my wife.
  • 45:47 - 45:53
    Seriously, she is becoming
    more beautiful all the time.
  • 45:53 - 46:00
    But if you could time
    lapse us spiritually,
  • 46:00 - 46:02
    you know what you see?
  • 46:02 - 46:07
    It's like wow!
  • 46:07 - 46:11
    The ugliness, the blemishes
    are falling off.
  • 46:11 - 46:15
    The wrinkles are disappearing.
  • 46:15 - 46:17
    How is that happening?
  • 46:17 - 46:18
    The Spirit.
  • 46:18 - 46:20
    That's what happens.
  • 46:20 - 46:22
    The Spirit. Christikeness.
  • 46:22 - 46:23
We heard it from our brother.
  • 46:23 - 46:25
    It's like the dawn
  • 46:25 - 46:28
    shining brighter and brighter
  • 46:28 - 46:29
    until the full day.
  • 46:29 - 46:30
    That's how it is.
  • 46:30 - 46:32
If you look at the sun,
  • 46:32 - 46:33
    you can't visibly see it,
  • 46:33 - 46:36
    but it is by degrees
    climbing higher in that sky.
  • 46:36 - 46:38
And it's the same way here.
  • 46:38 - 46:40
You know how it is with people's children?
  • 46:40 - 46:43
    We just went out to
    the Community conference
  • 46:43 - 46:44
    and you see people -
  • 46:44 - 46:46
    you see people and it's
like the last time I saw you,
  • 46:46 - 46:48
    you were this big!
  • 46:48 - 46:51
And you just went forward and bang!
  • 46:51 - 46:52
    There's this difference.
  • 46:52 - 46:53
    Well, that's how it is
  • 46:53 - 46:56
    if a true Christian -
    if you don't see them
  • 46:56 - 46:59
    for five years,
  • 46:59 - 47:02
    there should be noticeably
    something more Christlike.
  • 47:02 - 47:04
Why? Because that Spirit has operated.
  • 47:04 - 47:08
This is exactly what He does.
  • 47:08 - 47:10
    How about fruit?
  • 47:10 - 47:11
    This is the tenth.
  • 47:11 - 47:12
    Galatian 5:22.
  • 47:12 - 47:14
    You know this very well.
  • 47:14 - 47:16
"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
  • 47:16 - 47:18
    peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
  • 47:18 - 47:20
    faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
  • 47:20 - 47:24
Against such things, there is no law."
  • 47:24 - 47:26
    Once the Spirit comes in,
  • 47:26 - 47:28
    fruit. Fruit begins to show.
  • 47:28 - 47:30
    And I know this is
    similar to the last one.
  • 47:30 - 47:33
I have fruit trees in my yard.
  • 47:33 - 47:39
I have a lemon tree. (Thank you, Haney's.)
  • 47:39 - 47:41
    And it bears.
  • 47:41 - 47:43
    I have two fig trees.
  • 47:43 - 47:45
And I have a number of peach trees.
  • 47:45 - 47:49
And all of them are producing
  • 47:49 - 47:51
    already this year.
  • 47:51 - 47:53
    Fruit.
  • 47:53 - 47:54
    The fruit is coming out.
  • 47:54 - 47:56
The trees are known by their fruit.
  • 47:56 - 47:58
    And I'll tell you this,
  • 47:58 - 48:02
    where the Spirit is cultivating
  • 48:02 - 48:06
    and fertilizing and gardening,
  • 48:06 - 48:09
    beautiful things come forth.
  • 48:09 - 48:10
    That's what we have.
  • 48:10 - 48:11
    Beautiful things grow.
  • 48:11 - 48:13
    Love. Love for God.
  • 48:13 - 48:15
    Love for the brethren.
  • 48:15 - 48:17
    A joy.
  • 48:17 - 48:19
Brethren, a joy the world can't take away.
  • 48:19 - 48:21
    Why? Because our hope
  • 48:21 - 48:23
    is in something higher.
  • 48:23 - 48:25
Our hope is outside this world.
  • 48:25 - 48:29
Our hope is beyond our circumstances.
  • 48:29 - 48:30
    Brethren, do you know
  • 48:30 - 48:34
that even if CPS showed up at my door
  • 48:34 - 48:38
and took my two youngest children away,
  • 48:38 - 48:42
my hope in Christ is unshaken.
  • 48:42 - 48:45
I have a joy that transcends
  • 48:45 - 48:48
    my circumstances in this world.
  • 48:48 - 48:51
    A joy that passes understanding.
  • 48:51 - 48:53
    There's peace in the soul;
  • 48:53 - 48:55
    a sense of sins forgiven.
  • 48:55 - 48:57
This is what the Spirit does.
  • 48:57 - 49:01
The Spirit makes unkind people kind,
  • 49:01 - 49:03
    and harsh people gentle.
  • 49:03 - 49:06
    He changes people.
  • 49:06 - 49:10
People say, "Oh, you got religion."
  • 49:10 - 49:13
    I'll tell you this, if
    it's God's religion,
  • 49:13 - 49:17
you're going to get more than that.
  • 49:17 - 49:19
You're going to get a lot more than that.
  • 49:19 - 49:20
You're going to get this -
  • 49:20 - 49:22
    self control.
  • 49:22 - 49:25
You're going to become good by degrees,
  • 49:25 - 49:26
    but it's real, it's true.
  • 49:26 - 49:31
    Brethren, this is what
    our Bibles teach us.
  • 49:31 - 49:34
This is what it says about
    what true Christianity is.
  • 49:34 - 49:40
    This is what it says
    about where the Spirit is.
  • 49:40 - 49:43
    Eleven: Alienation.
  • 49:43 - 49:45
You say, what do you mean by that?
  • 49:45 - 49:46
    Ephesians 4:30.
  • 49:46 - 49:49
"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God
  • 49:49 - 49:50
    by whom you were sealed
  • 49:50 - 49:53
    for the day of redemption."
  • 49:53 - 49:58
Look, the Spirit is the member
  • 49:58 - 50:01
of the Godhead that we are told
  • 50:01 - 50:08
    is grieved by our sin.
  • 50:08 - 50:09
    I mean, listen,
  • 50:09 - 50:12
    David describes this
sort of thing in Psalm 32.
  • 50:12 - 50:14
    Don't turn there, but listen.
  • 50:14 - 50:16
David says this, "When I kept silent..."
  • 50:16 - 50:18
In other words, when I did not deal
  • 50:18 - 50:21
    with my sin before God,
  • 50:21 - 50:24
    "my bones wasted away
  • 50:24 - 50:27
through my groaning all day long.
  • 50:27 - 50:30
    Day and night Your hand
    was heavy against me,
  • 50:30 - 50:31
    my strength was dried up
  • 50:31 - 50:34
by the heat of summer. Selah.
  • 50:34 - 50:36
I acknowledged my sin to You.
  • 50:36 - 50:37
I did not cover my iniquity.
  • 50:37 - 50:39
I said I will confess my
    transgressions to the Lord,
  • 50:39 - 50:42
and You forgave the iniquity of my sin."
  • 50:42 - 50:44
And I would just ask you, Christian,
    do you know this?
  • 50:44 - 50:47
    Do you know this about
the presence of the Holy Spirit?
  • 50:47 - 50:53
Do you know the reality of the
    bone-wasting work of the Spirit?
  • 50:53 - 50:57
    You know what I mean.
  • 50:57 - 50:59
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 50:59 - 51:03
You know how it was when you're lost?
  • 51:03 - 51:05
You sinned and you were happy
  • 51:05 - 51:08
    and you wanted more.
  • 51:08 - 51:11
    That's not what
happens in the child of God.
  • 51:11 - 51:14
    You sin because you think
it's going to make you happy,
  • 51:14 - 51:17
    and your bones waste away.
  • 51:17 - 51:21
    And it's not happy.
  • 51:21 - 51:25
Where'd the smile of God go to?
  • 51:25 - 51:27
    Have you had that happen?
  • 51:27 - 51:30
    You know what happens
    when God smiles on us?
  • 51:30 - 51:32
    We can get careless.
  • 51:32 - 51:33
    Oh, this is great!
  • 51:33 - 51:36
    Sun shining. Birds singing.
  • 51:36 - 51:39
    Life is great! It's wonderful
    to be a Christian.
  • 51:39 - 51:43
And you get sloppy in your Christian life.
  • 51:43 - 51:44
    And what happens?
  • 51:44 - 51:46
    Suddenly, you look up -
  • 51:46 - 51:47
where'd the smile of God go?
  • 51:47 - 51:50
    And beyond that, you begin
to feel it in your bones
  • 51:50 - 51:52
    like David did.
  • 51:52 - 51:54
    You feel this.
  • 51:54 - 51:56
    Bone wasting. Why?
  • 51:56 - 51:58
Because God is grieved and it's the Spirit
  • 51:58 - 52:00
    who expresses His grief.
  • 52:00 - 52:03
    Why would He say don't
    grieve the Holy Spirit?
  • 52:03 - 52:05
Why? Because the Spirit of God is the one
  • 52:05 - 52:07
who so actively is doing all these things
  • 52:07 - 52:08
    in our life.
  • 52:08 - 52:11
And it's so much to our advantage
  • 52:11 - 52:12
    that we have Him,
  • 52:12 - 52:14
even beyond the advantage of what it was
  • 52:14 - 52:16
    to have Christ Himself walking,
  • 52:16 - 52:17
    and you grieve that Spirit,
  • 52:17 - 52:22
    and you are going to
    bear the consequences.
  • 52:22 - 52:24
    You don't want to say,
  • 52:24 - 52:26
well, I'm saved by the grace of God
  • 52:26 - 52:27
    and I'm under the blood,
  • 52:27 - 52:28
    and so you know what,
    my sin shouldn't matter.
  • 52:28 - 52:30
    It should be forgiven.
    But you see what happened.
  • 52:30 - 52:32
    It was forgiven in David,
  • 52:32 - 52:34
but it wasn't until he repented of it
  • 52:34 - 52:36
    and he acknowledged it,
  • 52:36 - 52:39
    and then the joy of
    his salvation returned.
  • 52:39 - 52:41
But this is another work of the Spirit.
  • 52:41 - 52:43
Christian, do you not know what it is
  • 52:43 - 52:47
to have that happen in your life?
  • 52:47 - 52:50
The Spirit is going to see to it:
  • 52:50 - 52:53
Sin is not going to be a joyful ride.
  • 52:53 - 52:57
He's not going to allow you
to enjoy it like you once did.
  • 52:57 - 53:00
Christian, the Spirit sees to it
  • 53:00 - 53:03
    that you hurt for sin.
  • 53:03 - 53:05
He'll make you groan under it.
  • 53:05 - 53:06
    And here's the last one,
  • 53:06 - 53:08
and this really is going to lead out
  • 53:08 - 53:10
into what I want to deal with next week
  • 53:10 - 53:12
    in testing the spirits.
  • 53:12 - 53:15
But you see this truth in 1 John 4:2,
  • 53:15 - 53:16
    where we're going next week,
  • 53:16 - 53:20
but it would be this: right doctrine.
  • 53:20 - 53:24
John argues that - this is interesting -
  • 53:24 - 53:29
John argues that there are spirits
  • 53:29 - 53:32
    behind doctrine.
  • 53:32 - 53:39
    Whether good or bad.
  • 53:39 - 53:43
In fact, Paul talks about demon doctrines.
  • 53:43 - 53:51
When you hear people or religions
  • 53:51 - 53:59
that speak truth or that speak error,
  • 53:59 - 54:02
    there are spirits behind that.
  • 54:02 - 54:05
And what he says here in 1 John 4:2,
  • 54:05 - 54:07
"By this we know the Spirit of God..."
  • 54:07 - 54:09
In other words, those who have
  • 54:09 - 54:11
the Spirit of God can be known. How?
  • 54:11 - 54:13
    "Because every spirit that confesses
  • 54:13 - 54:15
    that Jesus Christ has come
in the flesh is from God,
  • 54:15 - 54:17
    and every spirit that
    does not confess Jesus
  • 54:17 - 54:19
    is not from God."
  • 54:19 - 54:22
    John argues that there's
    always spirits behind doctrine.
  • 54:22 - 54:24
The Spirit of God is the Spirit of truth.
  • 54:24 - 54:26
The Spirit of God is the Spirit
  • 54:26 - 54:29
    who carried along
    the authors of Scripture.
  • 54:29 - 54:31
In fact, if you go down a little further,
  • 54:31 - 54:33
    you can find that whoever is of God;
  • 54:33 - 54:36
whoever has the Spirit listens to us,
  • 54:36 - 54:37
    John says.
  • 54:37 - 54:39
    In other words, they
    listen to the apostles.
  • 54:39 - 54:41
They listen to the apostle's doctrine
  • 54:41 - 54:42
    which is in here.
  • 54:42 - 54:44
You can know the Spirit of God
  • 54:44 - 54:46
because the Spirit of God will always
  • 54:46 - 54:50
    affirm and assert what
    is written in Scripture.
  • 54:50 - 54:52
    He will never contradict it.
  • 54:52 - 54:54
We can test the spirits that way.
  • 54:54 - 54:57
We can know the Spirit by which people
  • 54:57 - 55:00
    are indwelt by their doctrine.
  • 55:00 - 55:06
    And especially, he's saying,
    by their doctrine of Christ.
  • 55:06 - 55:08
Listen to what people say about Christ.
  • 55:08 - 55:10
    His Person. His work.
  • 55:10 - 55:12
    That's what we find here.
  • 55:12 - 55:16
    The Spirit of God - mark a man's doctrine;
  • 55:16 - 55:19
especially His doctrine of Jesus Christ.
  • 55:19 - 55:21
    Who Christ is;
  • 55:21 - 55:24
    what Christ has accomplished.
  • 55:24 - 55:31
    The Spirit always proclaims
    a glorious Christ.
  • 55:31 - 55:34
    I mean, when you see doctrine;
  • 55:34 - 55:35
    you hear doctrine;
  • 55:35 - 55:39
you read doctrine - doctrine is teaching -
  • 55:39 - 55:41
    it sets forth Christ glorious.
  • 55:41 - 55:44
The Spirit always is going to proclaim
  • 55:44 - 55:46
    a salvation that leaves us
  • 55:46 - 55:48
    not boasting in ourselves,
  • 55:48 - 55:49
    but boasting in the cross
  • 55:49 - 55:52
    and boasting in Christ.
  • 55:52 - 55:55
    That's absolutely essential.
  • 55:55 - 55:59
The Spirit shows us a Person.
  • 55:59 - 56:02
    The Spirit shows the person
  • 56:02 - 56:04
    that He indwells,
  • 56:04 - 56:07
    that He is active in.
  • 56:07 - 56:13
He shows them that Christ matters.
  • 56:13 - 56:16
What we think about Christ matters.
  • 56:16 - 56:18
The real Christ. The biblical Christ.
  • 56:18 - 56:20
    The true Christ.
  • 56:20 - 56:23
This is the Spirit of Christianity.
  • 56:23 - 56:25
    Right doctrine.
  • 56:25 - 56:27
So you think about all these.
  • 56:27 - 56:31
    If the Spirit is present,
  • 56:31 - 56:34
    we have conviction,
  • 56:34 - 56:37
    we have His leadership,
  • 56:37 - 56:39
    we have a thought life
  • 56:39 - 56:42
    with a mind set on
    the things of the Spirit,
  • 56:42 - 56:47
    Christ is glorified,
  • 56:47 - 56:51
five - the love of God is shed abroad
  • 56:51 - 56:53
    in our hearts by the Spirit;
  • 56:53 - 56:58
six - the Spirit of adoption
causes us to cry, "Abba, Father;"
  • 56:58 - 57:00
seven - the Spirit bears witness
  • 57:00 - 57:02
    that we are children of God;
  • 57:02 - 57:05
eight - by the Spirit, you put to death
  • 57:05 - 57:07
    the deeds of the body;
  • 57:07 - 57:11
nine - by the Spirit who is the Lord
  • 57:11 - 57:13
    we are transformed
  • 57:13 - 57:15
from one degree of glory to another
  • 57:15 - 57:18
    in this image of Christ;
  • 57:18 - 57:21
ten - the fruit of the Spirit:
  • 57:21 - 57:24
    love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
  • 57:24 - 57:26
    goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
  • 57:26 - 57:27
    self-control -
  • 57:27 - 57:29
    that is going to be evident;
  • 57:29 - 57:31
    this grieving of the Spirit,
  • 57:31 - 57:33
    the alienation that when Christians
  • 57:33 - 57:35
    fall into sin, we grieve the Spirit;
  • 57:35 - 57:40
we reap consequences in the bone-wasting
  • 57:40 - 57:42
    work of the Spirit;
  • 57:42 - 57:44
and then this last one, number 12,
  • 57:44 - 57:46
    was right doctrine.
  • 57:46 - 57:48
The Spirit teaches us and leads us
  • 57:48 - 57:50
    into the truth -
  • 57:50 - 57:53
    especially the truth concerning Christ.
  • 57:53 - 57:56
    These are 12 evidences.
  • 57:56 - 57:58
    And remember what John says.
  • 57:58 - 58:06
    "By this, we know..."
  • 58:06 - 58:12
    By this, we know
  • 58:12 - 58:13
    that God abides in us.
  • 58:13 - 58:18
We are the dwelling place of God.
  • 58:18 - 58:20
    How?
  • 58:20 - 58:23
    By the Holy Spirit.
  • 58:23 - 58:26
So that's what John teaches us
  • 58:26 - 58:27
    in these passages.
