I'm 99% Sure I Committed the Unpardonable Sin - Ask Pastor Tim

  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Maybe I've said this before,
  • 0:07 - 0:11
the two topics that seem to be
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    the most sought after,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
of the most interest that James posts,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
it seems like either have to do
  • 0:20 - 0:26
    with the battle against
    sexual sin and temptation,
  • 0:26 - 0:32
    or this one classic question
  • 0:32 - 0:36
has to do with the unpardonable sin.
  • 0:36 - 0:42
    And we've dealt with it.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    We had a special -
  • 0:45 - 0:50
we filmed a special interview basically
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    where I dealt with that,
  • 0:51 - 0:53
and then have we ever dealt with it
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    in any other APT's?
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    Five times?
  • 0:59 - 1:03
    So, that's how often
    this situation comes up.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
Let me read it to you.
  • 1:07 - 1:12
"I've committed the unforgivable sin -
  • 1:12 - 1:17
    99% chance.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
I just want to ask you
  • 1:18 - 1:20
what happens when you commit it?
  • 1:20 - 1:23
Because here's what happened to me.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    Everything went away.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    Honestly, everything.
  • 1:27 - 1:33
Even temptations now - I have none."
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    I don't think that's exactly
    what he means to say.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    I think he means that
    even with temptations,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    everything has gone away.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
He has no ability to resist or fight
  • 1:44 - 1:47
I think is what he means.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
"Emotions - I have only fear.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
I don't even love my family anymore.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
It all happened two days ago
  • 1:53 - 1:55
after I blasphemed the Holy Spirit
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    in my mind.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
I didn't mean the words that I said,
  • 2:00 - 2:03
but somehow I said them from my heart
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    in my mind.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
It was just like in one
    second, there it was.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    I cannot believe it.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
I asked God if I've really done this,
  • 2:10 - 2:12
and my conscience says that I did.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    I've been begging for forgiveness
    and nothing happened.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    I cannot recognize when
    I commit sin anymore.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    I'm not being convicted.
  • 2:20 - 2:25
I wish I was never born."
  • 2:25 - 2:30
Now, let me just say this.
  • 2:30 - 2:35
    When a person is perceived
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    to be struggling,
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    oftentimes what that provokes,
  • 2:42 - 2:46
or we think should be provoked from us
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    is pity.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
But the thing is with spiritual things,
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    sometimes the things
    that people struggle with
  • 2:57 - 2:59
or the problems that they have
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    is not actually something to be pitied;
  • 3:02 - 3:07
    it's something that they
    are to be blamed for.
  • 3:07 - 3:12
    There are ways of handling
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    problems that people have
  • 3:14 - 3:24
that can seem less than compassionate.
  • 3:24 - 3:31
I feel like I have read so many -
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    this is the classic question.
  • 3:33 - 3:40
    There are so many individuals.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
I've spent I don't know how much time
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    with people on the phone
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    and by email,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
and if I've spent that much time,
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    James has probably spent a
    hundred times that amount.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    Craig is answering.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    He's dealing with that.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
Do you ever give those things to Jeff?
  • 3:59 - 4:02
James: A lot of the unpardonable
    sin ones Jeff gets. Yes.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    Tim: Okay.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
    So here's Ichabod Spencer.
  • 4:08 - 4:11
This man lived about 200 years ago.
  • 4:11 - 4:18
He was a pastor in the northeast.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    He wrote this book.
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    I highly recommend it.
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    It's called "A Pastor's Sketches."
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    What this book is -
  • 4:26 - 4:29
now you talk about photographic memory -
  • 4:29 - 4:31
he must have had a photographic memory.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    He could interview somebody
  • 4:35 - 4:38
and then sit down and write
  • 4:38 - 4:41
and record the conversation that he had
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    word for word.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
And this is what we have here.
  • 4:45 - 4:48
We have him dealing with people -
  • 4:48 - 4:51
both Christians in struggles that they had
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    and unbelievers -
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    him dealing with them
    in an evangelistic sense.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    It's an extremely helpful book.
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    He deals with some problems
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    that are timeless.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    They're not just things people
    struggled with 200 years ago.
  • 5:07 - 5:11
And here is a short chapter
  • 5:11 - 5:13
where he deals with a young lady
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    who believed that she
    committed the unpardonable sin.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
And I want you all to hear it.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
    Because what has struck me
  • 5:23 - 5:26
about the vast majority of the people
  • 5:26 - 5:30
    that think that they've committed
    the unpardonable sin,
  • 5:30 - 5:37
is even if you could convince
    them that they hadn't,
  • 5:37 - 5:39
I'm not really convinced these people
  • 5:39 - 5:41
are lining up to be saved.
  • 5:41 - 5:45
I think the real problem is
  • 5:45 - 5:51
    they think that it's no
    longer within their capacity
  • 5:51 - 5:54
to be saved when they want to be saved
  • 5:54 - 5:57
    and that's what concerns them.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    Not that they really want to be saved;
  • 5:59 - 6:01
they just want to know that they can be
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    if they want to.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    And they've done something,
  • 6:06 - 6:08
and whether the devil's involved in it
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    and whispering in their ear
  • 6:10 - 6:11
    and condemning them,
  • 6:11 - 6:14
    or trying to convince them
    that they've committed it
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    when they haven't committed it,
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    I don't know.
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    How much it's their own conscience;
  • 6:19 - 6:21
how much it's their own ignorance.
  • 6:21 - 6:30
    But listen to this.
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    "Her most common topic..."
  • 6:32 - 6:34
This young lady he's speaking to.
  • 6:34 - 6:36
    "Her most common topic
  • 6:36 - 6:39
was the magnitude of her sins.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    She was such a sinner
  • 6:41 - 6:43
that there was no mercy for her."
  • 6:43 - 6:44
And he would try to convince her
  • 6:44 - 6:46
the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth
  • 6:46 - 6:49
    from all sin.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
Well, at this point, he doensn't know
  • 6:53 - 6:54
that she thinks she has committed
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    the unpardonable sin.
  • 6:56 - 6:57
    He's pressing her.
  • 6:57 - 7:00
He's visiting with her from time to time.
  • 7:00 - 7:02
"One day, as I was urging this point,
  • 7:02 - 7:06
and entreating her to be reconciled to God
  • 7:06 - 7:09
by yielding her heart to the persuasions
  • 7:09 - 7:12
    of the Holy Spirit,
  • 7:12 - 7:14
    she said to me,
  • 7:14 - 7:17
    'I believe I've committed
    the unpardonable sin.'"
  • 7:17 - 7:20
Now listen to how he interacts with her.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
    "What makes you think so?"
  • 7:23 - 7:25
See, that's a good question to ask people.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
People who come along and say,
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    "I've committed the unpardonable sin."
  • 7:29 - 7:36
Well, ask them why they think so?
  • 7:36 - 7:37
Because what you want to be
  • 7:37 - 7:39
is you want to be a soul doctor.
  • 7:39 - 7:40
You want to try to help people.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
    Why would they think
    that they committed it?
  • 7:43 - 7:48
"'Well, I feel so,' she said hesitatingly.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    'What makes you feel so?'
  • 7:51 - 7:53
'Well, the Lord would have forgiven me
  • 7:53 - 7:55
before this time if there was
  • 7:55 - 7:58
    any forgiveness for me.'"
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    And he says to her,
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    "He will forgive you now
  • 8:02 - 8:04
if you will repent of sin
  • 8:04 - 8:06
and trust in the redemption of Christ."
  • 8:06 - 8:08
Now listen, no matter what anybody says
  • 8:08 - 8:09
    they think they've done,
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    I'll guarantee you this,
  • 8:11 - 8:15
    if somebody repents and trusts
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    the redemption of Christ,
  • 8:16 - 8:19
    they will be saved.
  • 8:19 - 8:22
    You say what if they've
    committed the unpardonable sin?
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    I don't care what they've committed.
  • 8:24 - 8:25
    If they will trust Christ,
  • 8:25 - 8:29
Jesus said He will not turn away anybody
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    that comes to Him.
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    That's what He says.
  • 8:32 - 8:35
    And so that's a good
    place to go with people.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    No matter what you think
  • 8:37 - 8:38
    that you've committed,
  • 8:38 - 8:41
if you will repent of sin
  • 8:41 - 8:44
and trust in the redemption of Christ,
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    He will forgive you now.
  • 8:46 - 8:50
    That's based on His promises.
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    "'No,' said she,
  • 8:52 - 8:54
    'I've committed the unpardonable sin.
  • 8:54 - 8:56
There is no forgiveness for me.'
  • 8:56 - 9:00
    She wept and sobbed aloud."
  • 9:00 - 9:04
So this isn't superficial with her.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
This is deep. She feels this.
  • 9:07 - 9:10
"Said I, 'How long have you been thinking
  • 9:10 - 9:12
that you committed the unpardonable sin?'
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    She answered, 'I have
    known it a long time.'"
  • 9:15 - 9:20
    See, that was a good
    first question he asked.
  • 9:20 - 9:24
What makes you think you've committed it?
  • 9:24 - 9:28
Now, here's a good question too
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    when somebody asks it.
  • 9:30 - 9:35
    What is the unpardonable sin?
  • 9:35 - 9:36
You know, you get a lot of people
  • 9:36 - 9:41
    that think they've committed it.
  • 9:41 - 9:42
    (incomplete thought)
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    Listen to how she answers.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    "'What is the unpardonable sin?'
  • 9:46 - 9:50
    She answered, 'the sin
    against the Holy Ghost
  • 9:50 - 9:52
    which hath never forgiveness
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    neither in this world
  • 9:53 - 9:57
nor in the world to come.'"
  • 9:57 - 10:00
    But see, although that's
    correct what she said,
  • 10:00 - 10:04
that isn't what the sin is.
  • 10:04 - 10:09
"He says, 'What is the sin
    against the Holy Ghost?'
  • 10:09 - 10:12
    After much hesitation, she replied,
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    'It is the sin that
    Jesus Christ mentioned,
  • 10:15 - 10:19
    speaking against the Holy Ghost.'
  • 10:19 - 10:21
He asked her, 'Have you been
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    speaking against the Holy Ghost?'
  • 10:24 - 10:29
'Oh no, I have not done that,' said she.
  • 10:29 - 10:31
    'What then do you mean?
  • 10:31 - 10:34
    What is your unpardonable sin?'
  • 10:34 - 10:36
    She gave no answer."
  • 10:36 - 10:38
You see, that's the thing that you would
  • 10:38 - 10:41
    ask somebody is
  • 10:41 - 10:44
have you been speaking against the Spirit?
  • 10:44 - 10:48
I mean, you remember what those Jews did?
  • 10:48 - 10:51
    They were saying that Jesus
    had an unclean spirit.
  • 10:51 - 10:52
    (incomplete thought)
  • 10:52 - 10:56
And they were doing it maliciously.
  • 10:56 - 11:01
They were doing it willfully; purposely.
  • 11:01 - 11:03
    It's not like a thought
    shot through their minds,
  • 11:03 - 11:06
    and they're like, "Oh no!
    I thought that thought!
  • 11:06 - 11:08
Now I've committed the unpardonable sin!"
  • 11:08 - 11:11
    They're attacking Christ.
  • 11:11 - 11:16
    They're maliciously saying,
  • 11:16 - 11:21
    "He casts out demons
    by the prince of demons."
  • 11:21 - 11:24
    You see what they're doing?
  • 11:24 - 11:28
And she said, "No, I have not been."
  • 11:28 - 11:30
    "She gave no answer.
  • 11:30 - 11:31
    I continued to ask,
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    'When did you commit
    this unpardonable sin?'
  • 11:33 - 11:35
    She said nothing.
  • 11:35 - 11:37
'Tell me what it is.' She said nothing.
  • 11:37 - 11:38
'How came you to commit it?'
  • 11:38 - 11:39
    She said nothing.
  • 11:39 - 11:43
    'What makes you think
    you've committed it?'
  • 11:43 - 11:45
She said, 'God would have forgiven me
  • 11:45 - 11:48
    before this time if I
    had not committed it.'
  • 11:48 - 11:52
'Before this time? What do you mean?'
  • 11:52 - 11:55
'Why I have been a great while
  • 11:55 - 11:59
    seeking religion.'
  • 11:59 - 12:02
    He answered, 'Because you've
    been so long seeking it,
  • 12:02 - 12:06
you think it's no present fault of yours
  • 12:06 - 12:09
that you have not found it?
  • 12:09 - 12:10
But that God will not forgive you
  • 12:10 - 12:12
    because months ago you committed
  • 12:12 - 12:13
    the unpardonable sin?
  • 12:13 - 12:15
    Is that what you mean?'
  • 12:15 - 12:16
    'Yes sir.'
  • 12:16 - 12:18
    'Very well,' said I.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
'I suppose you want nothing more of me
  • 12:20 - 12:22
    if you're unpardonable.
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    I can do nothing for
you if that is the case.
  • 12:24 - 12:26
I may as well leave you.
  • 12:26 - 12:28
You may go to your closet and tell God
  • 12:28 - 12:29
    as you kneel before Him
  • 12:29 - 12:32
that you are willing to repent,
  • 12:32 - 12:34
that you're willing to trust in Christ,
  • 12:34 - 12:36
you're willing to obey God in all things,
  • 12:36 - 12:38
and that it's no fault of yours
  • 12:38 - 12:39
    that you're not a Christian.
  • 12:39 - 12:41
Tell Him that the only thing now
  • 12:41 - 12:42
    in your way to salvation
  • 12:42 - 12:44
    is that old unpardonable sin
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    which He will not forgive.
  • 12:46 - 12:47
    Goodbye.'
  • 12:47 - 12:50
    I left her at once."
  • 12:50 - 12:54
    Now, you think.
  • 12:54 - 12:57
I would say that to this man.
  • 12:57 - 12:59
I would say that to anybody
  • 12:59 - 13:04
    who thinks they've committed
    the unpardonable sin.
  • 13:04 - 13:08
See, that gets right to the point.
  • 13:08 - 13:10
Are you saying that you're ready
  • 13:10 - 13:12
to take Christ at His word
  • 13:12 - 13:14
and trust what He's done on that cross?
  • 13:14 - 13:16
You're ready to turn from your sin?
  • 13:16 - 13:18
    You're ready to follow Christ
  • 13:18 - 13:20
    and take His commandments
  • 13:20 - 13:23
as your daily meat, your daily food,
  • 13:23 - 13:24
    and follow Him?
  • 13:24 - 13:27
    You're ready to do that?
  • 13:27 - 13:31
    You desire to do that?
  • 13:31 - 13:32
    And you're telling me
  • 13:32 - 13:34
    that you're actually repentant
  • 13:34 - 13:37
    and you're believing,
  • 13:37 - 13:39
    but God won't save you
  • 13:39 - 13:43
    because of that unpardonable sin?
  • 13:43 - 13:47
You see, that would make God to be a liar.
  • 13:47 - 13:49
Because God says if you trust His Son
  • 13:49 - 13:50
    you will be saved.
  • 13:50 - 13:52
    You will not be ashamed.
  • 13:52 - 13:58
Scripture says that if you repent,
  • 13:58 - 14:01
    you will not likewise perish.
  • 14:01 - 14:05
If you don't repent, you will perish.
  • 14:05 - 14:11
If you do repent, you'll be saved.
  • 14:11 - 14:15
    God's a liar otherwise.
  • 14:15 - 14:16
    (incomplete thought)
  • 14:16 - 14:18
    So, he walks away.
  • 14:18 - 14:23
Now listen, let me tell you this.
  • 14:23 - 14:29
    Too often, especially
    with young believers,
  • 14:29 - 14:32
you can feel like if people
  • 14:32 - 14:33
    are willing to listen,
  • 14:33 - 14:36
you'll just talk on and on and on
  • 14:36 - 14:39
and on and on and on...
  • 14:39 - 14:44
    Some of you are getting
    involved in door-to-door ministry.
  • 14:44 - 14:46
You do not have to talk to
    somebody for two hours
  • 14:46 - 14:49
just because they're willing to talk.
  • 14:49 - 14:53
You can tell them the truth.
  • 14:53 - 14:55
    If they have valid questions,
  • 14:55 - 14:57
you can seek to answer them,
  • 14:57 - 14:59
but you don't have to go in circles.
  • 14:59 - 15:02
    You can walk away.
  • 15:02 - 15:05
Do you notice that the rich young ruler,
  • 15:05 - 15:10
    Jesus didn't debate with him.
  • 15:10 - 15:14
He laid it all on the
    table, and that was it.
  • 15:14 - 15:16
    In that case, Jesus wasn't
    the one that walked away;
  • 15:16 - 15:18
    the rich, young ruler was.
  • 15:18 - 15:21
But you know what? Same thing.
  • 15:21 - 15:25
You do not have to go on and on.
  • 15:25 - 15:28
    I'm afraid that many
    less mature Christians
  • 15:28 - 15:30
would have sat with this girl
  • 15:30 - 15:35
and they would have almost carried her
  • 15:35 - 15:41
    into the kingdom.
  • 15:41 - 15:42
    He walked.
  • 15:42 - 15:46
And you know He often did that.
  • 15:46 - 15:49
    You know, Asahel Nettleton -
  • 15:49 - 15:53
he was a contemporary of Ichabod Spencer.
  • 15:53 - 15:55
    He was very greatly used
  • 15:55 - 15:58
    in the second Great Awakening.
  • 15:58 - 16:01
He would walk away from whole churches.
  • 16:01 - 16:04
He would stay away from whole churches.
  • 16:04 - 16:06
    If he saw that their
    attitudes weren't right
  • 16:06 - 16:08
    about revival;
  • 16:08 - 16:10
    if he saw that they
    weren't trusting the Lord,
  • 16:10 - 16:12
    they were trusting him...
  • 16:12 - 16:17
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 16:17 - 16:23
It's not our calling to simply say
  • 16:23 - 16:25
as much as we possibly can
  • 16:25 - 16:27
to every single person in this world.
  • 16:27 - 16:29
In fact, we're told things like
  • 16:29 - 16:32
don't cast your pearls before swine.
  • 16:32 - 16:34
    Jesus told His own disciples
  • 16:34 - 16:35
    if they don't receive you,
  • 16:35 - 16:39
    you shake the dust off
your feet and hit the road.
  • 16:39 - 16:41
It's amazing sometimes we feel like
  • 16:41 - 16:44
we just have to go on and on and on,
  • 16:44 - 16:46
    like our multitude of words
  • 16:46 - 16:48
    is going to persuade them.
  • 16:48 - 16:52
    You know what? If they
    don't receive the truth,
  • 16:52 - 16:55
there's a place just to walk away.
  • 16:55 - 16:58
    And sometimes that can
    be the most powerful thing,
  • 16:58 - 17:01
    because what you're doing -
    you gave them the truth,
  • 17:01 - 17:05
now you're leaving them with the Lord.
  • 17:05 - 17:07
By the way, it's the Lord you need to have
  • 17:07 - 17:09
speak to people through your words
  • 17:09 - 17:13
more than your multitude of words.
  • 17:13 - 17:15
    "The next day..."
  • 17:15 - 17:17
See, he walked away from her
  • 17:17 - 17:18
    and how she's not comfortable.
  • 17:18 - 17:20
Her own conscience is going crazy.
  • 17:20 - 17:23
"The next day, she sent for me again.
  • 17:23 - 17:26
I found her as I did not expect."
  • 17:26 - 17:29
    See, he expected that this
    was going to be beneficial.
  • 17:29 - 17:32
And that she'd come to the Lord.
  • 17:32 - 17:37
He said, "I found her in
    the same state of mind;
  • 17:37 - 17:40
brooding sadly over the unpardonable sin.
  • 17:40 - 17:42
    After much conversation and aiming
  • 17:42 - 17:43
    to remove the difficulty
  • 17:43 - 17:46
and assuring her of her error,
  • 17:46 - 17:47
    she still insisted,
  • 17:47 - 17:49
    'I've committed the unpardonable sin.
  • 17:49 - 17:50
    I know I have. I know I have.
  • 17:50 - 17:53
    I know I have.'
  • 17:53 - 17:56
I desired her after a few moments
  • 17:56 - 17:58
    to quit her agitation
  • 17:58 - 18:00
and fix her thoughts on things
  • 18:00 - 18:04
which I was going to say to her."
  • 18:04 - 18:06
You know what he said to her?
  • 18:06 - 18:08
    He said young lady,
  • 18:08 - 18:12
I'm going to speak to you plainly.
  • 18:12 - 18:15
He said you're going to understand
  • 18:15 - 18:18
    every word I say.
  • 18:18 - 18:19
    That's good.
  • 18:19 - 18:22
"Some of the things which I shall say
  • 18:22 - 18:24
    may surprise you,
  • 18:24 - 18:26
but I want you to remember them.
  • 18:26 - 18:28
    All along through the summer
  • 18:28 - 18:30
I've treated you with the utmost kindness
  • 18:30 - 18:32
    and indulgence.
  • 18:32 - 18:34
    I've always come to you
    when you've sent for me
  • 18:34 - 18:37
    and many times when you
    have not sent for me.
  • 18:37 - 18:40
    It's because I feel
    kindly towards you still
  • 18:40 - 18:41
and wish to do you good
  • 18:41 - 18:44
    that I shall now say
    some very plain things
  • 18:44 - 18:48
    which you may not like,
    but they are true."
  • 18:48 - 18:49
    This is another thing.
  • 18:49 - 18:51
If you want to deal with people's souls,
  • 18:51 - 18:53
you often have to tell them things
  • 18:53 - 18:55
    they don't like.
  • 18:55 - 18:57
You see, he was a man who knew
  • 18:57 - 18:59
    when to walk away,
  • 18:59 - 19:01
and he was also a man to say
  • 19:01 - 19:05
    hard things to people.
  • 19:05 - 19:09
This is where I'm coming back to this.
  • 19:09 - 19:10
You get a person that's struggling
  • 19:10 - 19:13
    with the unpardonable sin.
  • 19:13 - 19:16
    Oftentimes the feeling I get
  • 19:16 - 19:20
is that the people want pity.
  • 19:20 - 19:24
They want you to help them.
  • 19:24 - 19:26
They want you to pity them.
  • 19:26 - 19:28
They want you to feel bad for them.
  • 19:28 - 19:30
They want you to enter in
  • 19:30 - 19:37
    to their pity party.
  • 19:37 - 19:38
Now, you're going to maybe think
  • 19:38 - 19:40
    what he says is cruel,
  • 19:40 - 19:45
but I want you to hear him very carefully.
  • 19:45 - 19:49
"First, you say that you have committed
  • 19:49 - 19:53
    the unpardonable sin,
  • 19:53 - 19:55
but you do not believe what you say."
  • 19:55 - 19:58
    Now, obviously, he got her.
  • 19:58 - 20:00
    Because he said to her,
  • 20:00 - 20:02
have you spoken against the Holy Spirit?
  • 20:02 - 20:04
And she said no at first.
  • 20:04 - 20:07
    And then she couldn't answer.
  • 20:07 - 20:09
    "And he said,
  • 20:09 - 20:11
'you don't believe what you say.
  • 20:11 - 20:13
    You believe no such thing.'"
  • 20:13 - 20:14
Now look, that's not to say
  • 20:14 - 20:16
    that there aren't some people
  • 20:16 - 20:18
    that you come across
    who really do believe it
  • 20:18 - 20:22
    and may be under a
    vicious attack of the devil.
  • 20:22 - 20:25
Bunyan is a great example of that.
  • 20:25 - 20:27
    He was attacked with that.
  • 20:27 - 20:29
I remember that happening to me
  • 20:29 - 20:31
    after I was saved.
  • 20:31 - 20:32
It didn't happen when I was lost.
  • 20:32 - 20:34
It happened after I was saved.
  • 20:34 - 20:38
I was bombarded with these thoughts.
  • 20:38 - 20:40
But he said, "you believe no such thing.
  • 20:40 - 20:42
You know indeed that you're a sinner,
  • 20:42 - 20:44
    but you do not believe
    that you've committed
  • 20:44 - 20:46
    the unpardonable sin.
  • 20:46 - 20:47
    You're not honest;
  • 20:47 - 20:49
not sincere when you say so.
  • 20:49 - 20:51
    You do not believe it.'"
  • 20:51 - 20:53
    Anyways, he's just there -
  • 20:53 - 20:57
he's pegging her on her own words.
  • 20:57 - 21:01
Some people do actually believe it.
  • 21:01 - 21:03
But I think what he says after this
  • 21:03 - 21:06
    is so applicable to so
    many of these cases.
  • 21:06 - 21:12
    "Second, it is pride.
  • 21:12 - 21:15
A foolish pride of a wicked heart
  • 21:15 - 21:17
    which makes you say
  • 21:17 - 21:19
    that you've committed
    the unpardonable sin."
  • 21:19 - 21:22
Now, I suspect if I would
    have read that and said,
  • 21:22 - 21:23
okay, what would you all say to her,
  • 21:23 - 21:26
probably none of you would have
    raised your hand and said,
  • 21:26 - 21:28
"I'd have said that she had a foolish,
  • 21:28 - 21:30
    prideful, wicked heart..."
  • 21:30 - 21:32
    which makes him say
  • 21:32 - 21:35
that he's committed the unpardonable sin.
  • 21:35 - 21:38
    You say, how is that?
  • 21:38 - 21:41
    Listen.
  • 21:41 - 21:44
    "Influenced by pride
  • 21:44 - 21:46
    you half-strive -
  • 21:46 - 21:48
    only half after all -
  • 21:48 - 21:51
    to believe you've done it."
  • 21:51 - 21:54
And you know what he says?
  • 21:54 - 21:58
    You wish to exalt yourself.
  • 21:58 - 22:00
    You say how?
  • 22:00 - 22:02
You see, that's what pride is.
  • 22:02 - 22:05
Pride is when we exalt ourselves.
  • 22:05 - 22:10
How can it be that many people
  • 22:10 - 22:13
who claim to commit the unpardonable sin -
  • 22:13 - 22:19
how would that be an exalting of self?
  • 22:19 - 22:25
What sort of sin is an unpardonable sin?
  • 22:25 - 22:27
It's like the sin of all sins.
  • 22:27 - 22:29
    It's like you're a sinner greater
  • 22:29 - 22:33
and further and blacker and deeper
  • 22:33 - 22:35
    and darker and more sinister
  • 22:35 - 22:38
and more debauched and more depraved
  • 22:38 - 22:39
    than anybody else.
  • 22:39 - 22:45
You're the worst of the worst.
  • 22:45 - 22:51
It's one thing if the Spirit
    of God has broken you
  • 22:51 - 22:53
and you can say like Paul,
  • 22:53 - 22:56
    "I'm the chief of sinners."
  • 22:56 - 22:58
    That's one thing.
  • 22:58 - 23:01
When you're able to say that in humility.
  • 23:01 - 23:04
    When you're able to
    say that in brokenness,
  • 23:04 - 23:09
but you also are able to cling to Christ
  • 23:09 - 23:11
    and trust what He's done.
  • 23:11 - 23:13
It's another thing when a person says
  • 23:13 - 23:15
    they're this horrible sinner
  • 23:15 - 23:16
and then they turn around and say
  • 23:16 - 23:18
but I won't take God at His word
  • 23:18 - 23:22
    and trust His Son.
  • 23:22 - 23:25
He says, "you wish to exalt yourself.
  • 23:25 - 23:29
You pretend that it's some great
  • 23:29 - 23:31
and uncommon thing which keeps you
  • 23:31 - 23:32
    from being a Christian.
  • 23:32 - 23:36
    It's the unpardonable sin.
  • 23:36 - 23:41
Pride lies at the bottom of all this."
  • 23:41 - 23:45
And then third, right on the same note.
  • 23:45 - 23:50
"You have no occasion for this pride."
  • 23:50 - 23:55
    He says there's nothing
    uncommon about you.
  • 23:55 - 24:01
    You're just an average sinner.
  • 24:01 - 24:04
"You're very much like other sinners.
  • 24:04 - 24:06
It's not likely that you could commit
  • 24:06 - 24:07
    the unpardonable sin,
  • 24:07 - 24:10
    even if you should try.
  • 24:10 - 24:13
I don't think you know enough to do it."
  • 24:13 - 24:15
You see, one of the things that the Jews -
  • 24:15 - 24:17
    they had great light.
  • 24:17 - 24:18
    Jesus was doing these miracles
  • 24:18 - 24:22
    right in front of them.
  • 24:22 - 24:27
They knew - even in their own councils,
  • 24:27 - 24:30
    they would say,
  • 24:30 - 24:32
we know that nobody can do these things
  • 24:32 - 24:37
    unless God is with them.
  • 24:37 - 24:41
That a notable miracle has been done?
  • 24:41 - 24:44
    They knew.
  • 24:44 - 24:48
And they would look at that.
  • 24:48 - 24:50
    They would watch Jesus heal.
  • 24:50 - 24:53
    They would know the
    miracles that took place,
  • 24:53 - 24:56
and they knew miracles took place.
  • 24:56 - 24:58
They knew He cast out demons.
  • 24:58 - 25:00
They knew He healed the sick.
  • 25:00 - 25:04
They knew that He did this.
  • 25:04 - 25:05
And they looked at it and they said
  • 25:05 - 25:09
the devil enables Him to do that.
  • 25:09 - 25:14
He's just saying the unpardonable sin
  • 25:14 - 25:16
    is basically this -
  • 25:16 - 25:20
it's the idea that you have all this light
  • 25:20 - 25:22
    on who Christ is,
  • 25:22 - 25:26
    on who the Spirit is,
  • 25:26 - 25:30
    and you specifically say -
  • 25:30 - 25:33
    with all that light -
  • 25:33 - 25:36
    you specifically blaspheme
    the Spirit of God.
  • 25:36 - 25:38
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 25:38 - 25:41
He's not even imagining that she has
  • 25:41 - 25:44
    sufficient light to do that.
  • 25:44 - 25:46
    "'Why?' said she,
  • 25:46 - 25:48
'Is there not such a sin?'
  • 25:48 - 25:51
'Well, yes, but you don't know what it is,
  • 25:51 - 25:55
and you don't know enough to commit it.'"
  • 25:55 - 26:01
Now, this fourth one I think is huge too.
  • 26:01 - 26:03
    He says this to her,
  • 26:03 - 26:06
"You are one of the most self-righteous
  • 26:06 - 26:11
    creatures I ever saw."
  • 26:11 - 26:16
So he's told her she's full of pride.
  • 26:16 - 26:19
Now, one of the most self-
    righteous creatures I ever saw.
  • 26:19 - 26:23
Now you have to stop and think.
  • 26:23 - 26:27
    Why would somebody be considered
  • 26:27 - 26:36
by Spencer to be this mass
    of self-righteousness?
  • 26:36 - 26:41
See, I think this is what you
    want to remember especially
  • 26:41 - 26:43
in dealing with people who believe
  • 26:43 - 26:47
    they've committed the unpardonable sin.
  • 26:47 - 26:50
    "You try to think
  • 26:50 - 26:54
    that you're not to blame
    for your irreligion."
  • 26:54 - 26:57
You see? It becomes an excuse.
  • 26:57 - 27:01
    "Well, I can't become a Christian."
  • 27:01 - 27:03
    "I can't repent."
  • 27:03 - 27:07
    "I can't fall down before
    God in surrender."
  • 27:07 - 27:08
    "I can't." Why?
  • 27:08 - 27:10
    "I've committed the unpardonable sin."
  • 27:10 - 27:12
In other words, it's not my fault.
  • 27:12 - 27:15
And you know what it implies?
  • 27:15 - 27:18
Well, I would do all of
that if God would let me,
  • 27:18 - 27:20
    but God won't let me
    because I've committed
  • 27:20 - 27:23
    the unpardonable sin.
  • 27:23 - 27:26
    He says to her,
  • 27:26 - 27:27
"You try to think that you're willing
  • 27:27 - 27:30
    to be a Christian,
  • 27:30 - 27:32
    and would be a Christian,
  • 27:32 - 27:34
if it were not for that unpardonable sin
  • 27:34 - 27:36
which you try in your pride
  • 27:36 - 27:38
    to believe you've committed.
  • 27:38 - 27:42
You pretend that it's not your present
  • 27:42 - 27:46
and cherished sin which keeps you
  • 27:46 - 27:48
    in your impenitence."
  • 27:48 - 27:51
    Now that's huge.
  • 27:51 - 27:53
You see what he's saying to her?
  • 27:53 - 27:55
The reason you're not a Christian
  • 27:55 - 27:57
is because you've got sin in your life
  • 27:57 - 27:59
    that you love,
  • 27:59 - 28:02
and you're not willing to let go of.
  • 28:02 - 28:04
And what you're wanting to do
  • 28:04 - 28:08
is blame God for the fact,
  • 28:08 - 28:11
because God invented this unpardonable sin
  • 28:11 - 28:13
    and you want to convince
    yourself you've committed it
  • 28:13 - 28:16
and therefore give you an excuse
  • 28:16 - 28:20
as to why you're not turning from your sin
  • 28:20 - 28:25
and embracing the sacrifice of Christ.
  • 28:25 - 28:27
    That's exactly it.
  • 28:27 - 28:29
And that is the feeling that I get
  • 28:29 - 28:35
    from most of the people.
  • 28:35 - 28:43
You don't get the sense that it's:
  • 28:43 - 28:46
    "I'm wicked,
  • 28:46 - 28:48
and I'm looking to the healing
  • 28:48 - 28:52
    that's found in Christ's suffering."
  • 28:52 - 28:53
    That's not it.
  • 28:53 - 28:56
    It's typically:
  • 28:56 - 28:59
    "Well, I can't become a Christian.
  • 28:59 - 29:00
    I just can't." Why?
  • 29:00 - 29:02
    "I've committed the unpardonable sin."
  • 29:02 - 29:03
    And what they're implying is,
  • 29:03 - 29:05
    well, I would become one
  • 29:05 - 29:07
if it wasn't for that unpardonable sin.
  • 29:07 - 29:09
    I would become one if
    it wasn't for the fact
  • 29:09 - 29:12
that the doorway's been shut on me.
  • 29:12 - 29:14
    That's just not true.
  • 29:14 - 29:17
The reason they're not becoming Christians
  • 29:17 - 29:19
is because they love their sin
  • 29:19 - 29:22
and they won't come to the light.
  • 29:22 - 29:25
And that's what he's calling out.
  • 29:25 - 29:27
"You pretend that it's not your present,
  • 29:27 - 29:28
    cherished sin which keeps you
  • 29:28 - 29:30
    in your impenitence.
  • 29:30 - 29:34
    Oh, you are good enough,
    surely, to repent.
  • 29:34 - 29:35
    You would repent.
  • 29:35 - 29:37
    Indeed, you would,
  • 29:37 - 29:40
if it were not for that unpardonable sin.
  • 29:40 - 29:41
    That's your heart -
  • 29:41 - 29:44
    full of self-righteousness and pride."
  • 29:44 - 29:47
    Fifth, "Your wicked heart clings
  • 29:47 - 29:50
to this idea of the unpardonable sin
  • 29:50 - 29:54
    as an excuse for your
    continued impenitence;
  • 29:54 - 29:56
for your living in the indulgence of sin,
  • 29:56 - 29:59
    unbelief, and disobedience
    to God every day.
  • 29:59 - 30:01
And your excuse will not stand.
  • 30:01 - 30:04
    You make it insincerely.
  • 30:04 - 30:06
    It's not the unpardonable sin
  • 30:06 - 30:08
which hinders your being a Christian.
  • 30:08 - 30:10
    It's your wickedness of heart,
  • 30:10 - 30:12
    your pride, your vanity,
  • 30:12 - 30:15
    and your insincerity."
  • 30:15 - 30:17
And now he's done with her for good.
  • 30:17 - 30:20
He says, "I shall never speak again.
  • 30:20 - 30:23
I shall never again have anything
  • 30:23 - 30:26
to say to you about the unpardonable sin.
  • 30:26 - 30:29
If you had any real and
    just conviction of sin,
  • 30:29 - 30:32
    you would never name
    the unpardonable sin."
  • 30:32 - 30:37
You ought to pick up on that too.
  • 30:37 - 30:41
When a person truly has a convicting
  • 30:41 - 30:45
    work of the Spirit,
  • 30:45 - 30:47
    that Spirit crushes a man
  • 30:47 - 30:52
    from every dependence in himself.
  • 30:52 - 30:58
    A God-given, Spirit-given conviction.
  • 30:58 - 31:02
    That Spirit will cause
    us to look to Christ
  • 31:02 - 31:04
    and find our hope there
  • 31:04 - 31:07
    and find our help there.
  • 31:07 - 31:10
    He's right.
  • 31:10 - 31:12
If you had any real and just
  • 31:12 - 31:15
    conviction of sin,
  • 31:15 - 31:17
you would never name the unpardonable sin.
  • 31:17 - 31:19
    "Some months after this,
  • 31:19 - 31:21
she called upon me in deep trouble.
  • 31:21 - 31:24
But now her complaint was that
  • 31:24 - 31:26
    she had a wicked,
    deceitful, and hard heart
  • 31:26 - 31:28
opposed to the law of God.
  • 31:28 - 31:30
She became finally, as she believed,
  • 31:30 - 31:35
    a true penitent and professed
    Christianity publicly.
  • 31:35 - 31:37
But in all her religious exercises,
  • 31:37 - 31:39
    there appeared nothing very peculiar
  • 31:39 - 31:41
and she never named to me
  • 31:41 - 31:43
    the unpardonable sin again."
  • 31:43 - 31:46
In other words, he just said in the end,
  • 31:46 - 31:51
she was just an average sinner.
  • 31:51 - 31:53
Then he makes one last statement here.
  • 31:53 - 31:55
    "True light..."
  • 31:55 - 31:57
    True light.
  • 31:57 - 32:04
"True light in the conscience is one thing
  • 32:04 - 32:10
and a deceitful gloom in the proud heart
  • 32:10 - 32:12
    is quite another."
  • 32:12 - 32:14
    Do you see the difference?
  • 32:14 - 32:17
You get individuals who feel like
  • 32:17 - 32:19
    they've committed the unpardonable sin,
  • 32:19 - 32:21
and it just fills them with this gloom
  • 32:21 - 32:24
    and this dread.
  • 32:24 - 32:26
    But he's saying this.
  • 32:26 - 32:29
    This is what he recognized.
  • 32:29 - 32:31
He lived in the day where I believe he saw
  • 32:31 - 32:35
    five separate revivals.
  • 32:35 - 32:39
    And he saw when the
    Spirit of God was working
  • 32:39 - 32:41
true light in the conscience -
  • 32:41 - 32:43
    it looked one way.
  • 32:43 - 32:46
People felt the weight of their sin,
  • 32:46 - 32:49
    and they turned to Christ.
  • 32:49 - 32:52
And it's as somebody has said before,
  • 32:52 - 32:54
once you take a sinner and you show them
  • 32:54 - 32:57
    indeed truthfully their sin
  • 32:57 - 33:00
and you show them the remedy,
  • 33:00 - 33:01
    the work's done.
  • 33:01 - 33:04
They will run to the remedy.
  • 33:04 - 33:05
    You show them their sickness.
  • 33:05 - 33:08
They will run to the doctor.
  • 33:08 - 33:10
    And that's totally different
  • 33:10 - 33:12
than when you get a person
  • 33:12 - 33:15
    who has a proud heart
  • 33:15 - 33:20
    coupled with a deceitful gloom.
  • 33:20 - 33:21
He says this, "When a sinner
  • 33:21 - 33:25
has any just sense of his condition
  • 33:25 - 33:28
as alienated from a holy God,
  • 33:28 - 33:30
he will not be apt to think
  • 33:30 - 33:33
    of the unpardonable sin.
  • 33:33 - 33:39
    Spurious conviction is
    common but useless."
  • 33:39 - 33:43
    Spurious conviction -
  • 33:43 - 33:47
    where people are convicted -
  • 33:47 - 33:51
    spurious means it's no good.
  • 33:51 - 33:53
You're all riled up about something
  • 33:53 - 33:55
that leads to no good end.
  • 33:55 - 33:57
    Just thinking you've committed
  • 33:57 - 33:59
    this unpardonable sin.
  • 33:59 - 34:04
Anyway, I thought his treatment of it
  • 34:04 - 34:06
goes to the root of exposing
  • 34:06 - 34:10
some of the real issues concerning it.
  • 34:10 - 34:11
    (from the room)
  • 34:11 - 34:13
    So from that email,
  • 34:13 - 34:15
    what made you believe
  • 34:15 - 34:18
    with a limited context,
  • 34:18 - 34:20
that this person who emailed in
  • 34:20 - 34:23
was just like maybe one of these people
  • 34:23 - 34:26
    that Spencer dealt with
  • 34:26 - 34:28
and not maybe someone like Bunyan
  • 34:28 - 34:30
or when he was a young Christian.
  • 34:30 - 34:31
I guess how would you maybe
  • 34:31 - 34:35
    differentiate them?
  • 34:35 - 34:39
Tim: Well, I mean the thing was
  • 34:39 - 34:43
that if you go back and
    read "Grace Abounding,"
  • 34:43 - 34:46
    Bunyan's testimony.
  • 34:46 - 34:48
    When he's under attack
  • 34:48 - 34:51
and being tempted to feel that,
  • 34:51 - 34:53
he's running to the Word of God.
  • 34:53 - 34:55
    He's calling upon the Lord.
  • 34:55 - 34:56
    He's looking to Christ.
  • 34:56 - 34:58
That was the same thing I was doing
  • 34:58 - 35:00
in the midst of all of it.
  • 35:00 - 35:03
    Where you have a gloom;
  • 35:03 - 35:12
    (incomplete thought)
  • 35:12 - 35:14
    "I've committed the unforgivable sin;
  • 35:14 - 35:17
    99% chance.
  • 35:17 - 35:19
I just want to ask you what happens
  • 35:19 - 35:20
    when you commit it,
  • 35:20 - 35:22
because here's what happened to me.
  • 35:22 - 35:25
It all happened two days ago.
  • 35:25 - 35:27
I didn't mean the words that I said..."
  • 35:27 - 35:29
So right there I would say
  • 35:29 - 35:31
he didn't mean the words that he said.
  • 35:31 - 35:33
    That's not the unpardonable sin.
  • 35:33 - 35:35
    If you even start where
    he started with the girl,
  • 35:35 - 35:38
    this isn't the unpardonable sin.
  • 35:38 - 35:43
But the thing is, "I've asked
God if I've really done this.
  • 35:43 - 35:45
My conscience says that I did.
  • 35:45 - 35:47
    I've been begging for forgiveness.
  • 35:47 - 35:50
    Nothing happened.
  • 35:50 - 35:52
    I cannot recognize when
    I commit sin right now.
  • 35:52 - 35:55
    I'm not being convicted.
  • 35:55 - 36:01
I wish I never was born."
  • 36:01 - 36:05
You know, "I'm not being convicted,"
  • 36:05 - 36:08
and yet, "I'm begging for forgiveness."
  • 36:08 - 36:09
    Well, what that tells me
  • 36:09 - 36:11
    is that what he's saying
  • 36:11 - 36:15
    is I don't even sense my sin;
  • 36:15 - 36:17
    I don't love my family.
  • 36:17 - 36:20
    What he's asking forgiveness for
  • 36:20 - 36:23
    is that this one thought
    shot through his mind.
  • 36:23 - 36:26
And I think the real issue
  • 36:26 - 36:30
comes back to what was happening there.
  • 36:30 - 36:31
Is this really a young man
  • 36:31 - 36:34
that's been convicted of the Spirit?
  • 36:34 - 36:36
    True light in the conscience?
  • 36:36 - 36:41
Where he sees himself as a wicked sinner
  • 36:41 - 36:45
and is coming to God to
be pardoned of all of it.
  • 36:45 - 36:48
Or, is it really somebody who's wanting
  • 36:48 - 36:52
    to blame God?
  • 36:52 - 36:54
    "I've committed the unpardonable sin,
  • 36:54 - 37:00
therefore all these things are justifiable
  • 37:00 - 37:02
    because after all, I've committed
  • 37:02 - 37:04
    the unpardonable sin and now
  • 37:04 - 37:08
God has put me in this place.
  • 37:08 - 37:11
He's taken away my love for my family.
  • 37:11 - 37:16
I don't have any conviction anymore."
  • 37:16 - 37:19
I would just say this -
  • 37:19 - 37:22
the same thing that was said to the girl -
  • 37:22 - 37:26
so are you saying you would repent
  • 37:26 - 37:28
    and flee to the cross
  • 37:28 - 37:32
if only it wasn't for this
    unpardonable sin?
  • 37:32 - 37:35
I think the difference is that Bunyan
  • 37:35 - 37:38
    was likely already converted.
  • 37:38 - 37:43
    I was already converted.
  • 37:43 - 37:45
I don't doubt that the devil
  • 37:45 - 37:50
can play with our minds and thoughts
  • 37:50 - 37:52
    and consciences on this point.
  • 37:52 - 37:55
You come across the fact that
    there's an unpardonable sin
  • 37:55 - 37:58
and the devil will be right there
to tell you you've committed it.
  • 37:58 - 38:02
    There's no use going.
  • 38:02 - 38:05
But I think the thing is
  • 38:05 - 38:07
people do all sorts of things
  • 38:07 - 38:10
    where they heard about
    the unpardonable sin,
  • 38:10 - 38:11
    the unforgivable sin,
  • 38:11 - 38:13
    this blaspheming the Holy Spirit,
  • 38:13 - 38:15
    and then what happens is
  • 38:15 - 38:20
    they make an oath;
  • 38:20 - 38:23
they make some kind of covenant,
  • 38:23 - 38:26
they make some kind of commitment,
  • 38:26 - 38:29
they vow and then they break it.
  • 38:29 - 38:31
    We've seen that before.
  • 38:31 - 38:35
Or, he has a thought that crosses his mind
  • 38:35 - 38:37
and I think that's the question
    that needs to be asked.
  • 38:37 - 38:39
    What are you saying?
  • 38:39 - 38:45
Are you saying that you would repent
  • 38:45 - 38:48
    and believe and trust Christ
  • 38:48 - 38:50
if it just wasn't for this
    unpardonable sin?
  • 38:50 - 38:53
I think he's hitting at the root
  • 38:53 - 38:56
    of a vast ocean
  • 38:56 - 39:01
    behind these unpardonable sin
  • 39:01 - 39:03
    questions and concerns,
  • 39:03 - 39:09
    that is a tremendous self-righteousness.
  • 39:09 - 39:12
    Obviously, he met repeatedly
  • 39:12 - 39:15
    with this young lady.
  • 39:15 - 39:17
We only have the ability to work
  • 39:17 - 39:20
    with a paragraph.
  • 39:20 - 39:27
So, yes, if Spencer sat down with this guy
  • 39:27 - 39:32
    and upon much further conversation
  • 39:32 - 39:35
    and digging have answered differently?
  • 39:35 - 39:37
    Perhaps.
  • 39:37 - 39:40
But I guess, I have this sense
  • 39:40 - 39:42
    that people are saying:
  • 39:42 - 39:44
    "Well, yes, I would repent
  • 39:44 - 39:46
and I would believe and I would
  • 39:46 - 39:49
if it just wasn't for this
    unpardonable sin."
  • 39:49 - 39:54
    That's a total fallacy.
  • 39:54 - 39:55
    (from the room)
  • 39:55 - 39:58
    I guess, yeah, answering emails
  • 39:58 - 40:00
this comes up, but I've never
  • 40:00 - 40:02
    gone out evangelizing
  • 40:02 - 40:05
and had a conversation like that.
  • 40:05 - 40:07
    Tim: No, typically that's
    not the kind of thing
  • 40:07 - 40:09
    you'd come across evangelizing.
  • 40:09 - 40:11
    It's the kind of thing
  • 40:11 - 40:14
that the very nature of I'll Be Honest
  • 40:14 - 40:17
and the fact that we entertain questions
  • 40:17 - 40:19
    and have this APT
  • 40:19 - 40:21
    and James is available
  • 40:21 - 40:22
    and Jeff is available
  • 40:22 - 40:25
    and Terry and Craig,
  • 40:25 - 40:27
    that they're answering
    all these questions.
  • 40:27 - 40:33
    There's a lot of people
    who find this outlet
  • 40:33 - 40:37
to try to get some kind of answers
  • 40:37 - 40:40
for whatever may be plaguing them
  • 40:40 - 40:42
    or troubling them.
