I'm 99% Sure I Committed the Unpardonable Sin - Ask Pastor Tim

  • Not Synced
    Maybe I've said this before,
  • Not Synced
the two topics that seem to be
  • Not Synced
    the most sought after,
  • Not Synced
of the most interest that James posts,
  • Not Synced
it seems like either have to do
  • Not Synced
    with the battle against
    sexual sin and temptation,
  • Not Synced
    or this classic question
  • Not Synced
that has to do with the unpardonable sin.
  • Not Synced
    And we've dealt with it.
  • Not Synced
    We had a special -
  • Not Synced
we filmed a special interview basically
  • Not Synced
    where I dealt with that,
  • Not Synced
and then have we ever dealt with it
  • Not Synced
    in any other APT's?
  • Not Synced
    Five times?
  • Not Synced
    So, that's how often
    this situation comes up.
  • Not Synced
Let me read it to you.
  • Not Synced
"I've committed the unforgivable sin -
  • Not Synced
    99% chance.
  • Not Synced
I just want to ask you
  • Not Synced
what happens when you commit it?
  • Not Synced
Because here's what happened to me.
  • Not Synced
    Everything went away.
  • Not Synced
    Honestly, everything.
  • Not Synced
Even temptations now - I have none."
  • Not Synced
    I don't think that's exactly
    what he means to say.
  • Not Synced
    I think he means that
    even with temptations,
  • Not Synced
    everything has gone away.
  • Not Synced
He has no ability to resist or fight
  • Not Synced
I think is what he means.
  • Not Synced
"Emotions - I have only fear.
  • Not Synced
I don't even love my family anymore.
  • Not Synced
It all happened two days ago
  • Not Synced
after I blasphemed the Holy Spirit
  • Not Synced
    in my mind.
  • Not Synced
I didn't mean the words that I said,
  • Not Synced
but somehow I said them from my heart
  • Not Synced
    in my mind.
  • Not Synced
It was just like in one
    second, there it was.
  • Not Synced
    I cannot believe it.
  • Not Synced
I asked God if I've really done this,
  • Not Synced
and my conscience says that I did.
  • Not Synced
    I've been begging for forgiveness
  • Not Synced
    and nothing happened.
  • Not Synced
    I cannot recognize when
    I commit sin anymore.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not being convicted.
  • Not Synced
I wish I was never born."
  • Not Synced
Now, let me just say this.
  • Not Synced
    When a person is perceived
  • Not Synced
    to be struggling,
  • Not Synced
    oftentimes what that provokes,
  • Not Synced
or we think should be provoked from us
  • Not Synced
    is pity.
  • Not Synced
But the thing is with spiritual things,
  • Not Synced
    sometimes the things
    that people struggle with
  • Not Synced
or the problems that they have
  • Not Synced
    is not actually something to be pitied;
  • Not Synced
    it's something that they
    are to be blamed for.
  • Not Synced
    There are ways of handling
  • Not Synced
    problems that people have
  • Not Synced
that can seem less than compassionate.
  • Not Synced
I feel like I have read so many -
  • Not Synced
    this is the classic question.
  • Not Synced
    There are so many individuals.
  • Not Synced
I've spent I don't know how much time
  • Not Synced
    with people on the phone
  • Not Synced
    and by email,
  • Not Synced
and if I've spent that much time,
  • Not Synced
    James has probably spent a
    hundred times that amount.
  • Not Synced
    Craig is answering.
  • Not Synced
    He's dealing with that.
  • Not Synced
Do you ever give those things to Jeff?
  • Not Synced
James: A lot of the unpardonable
    sin ones Jeff gets. Yes.
  • Not Synced
    Tim: Okay.
  • Not Synced
    So here's Ichabod Spencer.
  • Not Synced
This man lived about 200 years ago.
  • Not Synced
He was a pastor in the northeast.
  • Not Synced
    He wrote this book.
  • Not Synced
    I highly recommend it.
  • Not Synced
    It's called "A Pastor's Sketches."
  • Not Synced
    What this book is -
  • Not Synced
now you talk about photographic memory -
  • Not Synced
he must have had a photographic memory.
  • Not Synced
    He could interview somebody
  • Not Synced
and then sit down and write
  • Not Synced
and record the conversation that he had
  • Not Synced
    word for word.
  • Not Synced
And this is what we have here.
  • Not Synced
We have him dealing with people -
  • Not Synced
both Christians in struggles that they had
  • Not Synced
    and unbelievers -
  • Not Synced
    him dealing with them
    in an evangelistic sense.
  • Not Synced
    It's an extremely helpful book.
  • Not Synced
    He deals with some problems
  • Not Synced
    that are timeless.
  • Not Synced
    They're not just things people
    struggled with 200 years ago.
  • Not Synced
And here is a short chapter
  • Not Synced
where he deals with a young lady
  • Not Synced
    who believed that she
    committed the unpardonable sin.
  • Not Synced
And I want you all to hear it.
  • Not Synced
    Because what has struck me
  • Not Synced
about the vast majority of the people
  • Not Synced
    that think that they've committed
    the unpardonable sin,
  • Not Synced
is even if you could convince
    them that they hadn't,
  • Not Synced
I'm not really convinced these people
  • Not Synced
are lining up to be saved.
  • Not Synced
I think the real problem is
  • Not Synced
    they think that it's no
    longer within their capacity
  • Not Synced
to be saved when they want to be saved
  • Not Synced
    and that's what concerns them.
  • Not Synced
    Not that they really want to be saved;
  • Not Synced
they just want to know that they can be
  • Not Synced
    if they want to.
  • Not Synced
    And they've done something,
  • Not Synced
and whether the devil's involved in it
  • Not Synced
    and whispering in their ear
  • Not Synced
    and condemning them,
  • Not Synced
    or trying to convince them
    that they've committed it
  • Not Synced
    when they haven't commit it,
  • Not Synced
    I don't know.
  • Not Synced
    How much it's their own conscience;
  • Not Synced
how much it's their own ignorance.
  • Not Synced
    But listen to this.
  • Not Synced
    "Her most common topic..."
  • Not Synced
This young lady he's speaking to.
  • Not Synced
    "Her most common topic
  • Not Synced
was the magnititude of her sins.
  • Not Synced
    She was such a sinner
  • Not Synced
that there was no mercy for her."
  • Not Synced
And he would try to convince her
  • Not Synced
the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth
  • Not Synced
    from all sin.
  • Not Synced
Well, at this point, he doensn't know
  • Not Synced
that she thinks she has committed
  • Not Synced
    the unpardonable sin.
  • Not Synced
    He's pressing her.
  • Not Synced
He's visiting with her from time to time.
  • Not Synced
"One day, as I was urging this point,
  • Not Synced
and entreating her to be reconciled to God
  • Not Synced
by yielding her heart to the persuasions
  • Not Synced
    of the Holy Spirit,
  • Not Synced
    she said to me,
  • Not Synced
    'I believe I've committed
    the unpardonable sin.'"
  • Not Synced
Now listen to how he interacts with her.
  • Not Synced
    "What makes you think so?"
  • Not Synced
See, that's a good question to ask people.
  • Not Synced
People who come along and say,
  • Not Synced
    "I've committed the unpardonable sin."
  • Not Synced
Well, ask them why they think so?
  • Not Synced
Because what you want to be
  • Not Synced
is you want to be a soul doctor.
  • Not Synced
You want to try to help people.
  • Not Synced
    Why would they think
    that they committed it?
  • Not Synced
"'Well, I feel so,' she said hesitatingly.
  • Not Synced
    'What makes you feel so?'
  • Not Synced
'Well, the Lord would have forgiven me
  • Not Synced
before this time if there was
  • Not Synced
    any forgiveness for me.'"
  • Not Synced
    And he says to her,
  • Not Synced
    "'He will forgive you now
  • Not Synced
if you will repent of sin
  • Not Synced
and trust in the redemption of Christ.'"
  • Not Synced
Now listen, no matter what anybody says
  • Not Synced
    they think they've done,
  • Not Synced
    I'll guarantee you this,
  • Not Synced
    if somebody repents and trusts
  • Not Synced
    the redemption of Christ,
  • Not Synced
    they will be saved.
  • Not Synced
    You say what if they've
    committed the unpardonable sin?
  • Not Synced
    I don't care what they've committed.
  • Not Synced
    If they will trust Christ,
  • Not Synced
Jesus said He will not turn away anybody
  • Not Synced
    that comes to Him.
  • Not Synced
    That's what He says.
  • Not Synced
    And so that's a good
    place to go with people.
  • Not Synced
    No matter what you think
  • Not Synced
    that you've committed,
  • Not Synced
if you will repent of sin
  • Not Synced
and trust in the redemption of Christ,
  • Not Synced
    He will forgive you now.
  • Not Synced
    That's based on His promises.
  • Not Synced
    "'No,' said she,
  • Not Synced
    'I've committed the unpardonable sin.
  • Not Synced
There is no forgiveness for me.'
  • Not Synced
    She wept and sobbed aloud."
  • Not Synced
So this isn't superficial with her.
  • Not Synced
This is deep. She feels this.
  • Not Synced
"Said I, 'How long have you been thinking
  • Not Synced
that you committed the unpardonable sin?'
  • Not Synced
    She answered, 'I have
    known it a long time.'"
  • Not Synced
    See, that was a good
    first question he asked.
  • Not Synced
What makes you think you've committed it?
  • Not Synced
Now, here's a good question too
  • Not Synced
    when somebody asks it.
  • Not Synced
    What is the unpardonable sin?
  • Not Synced
You know, you get a lot of people
  • Not Synced
    that think they've committed it.
  • Not Synced
    Listen to how she answers.
  • Not Synced
    "'What is the unpardonable sin?'
  • Not Synced
    She answered, 'the sin
    against the Holy Ghost
  • Not Synced
    which hath never forgiveness
  • Not Synced
    neither in this world
  • Not Synced
nor in the world to come.'"
  • Not Synced
    But see, although that's
    correct what she said,
  • Not Synced
that isn't what the sin is.
  • Not Synced
"He says, 'What is the sin
    against the Holy Ghost?'
  • Not Synced
    After much hesitation, she replied,
  • Not Synced
    'It is the sin that
    Jesus Christ mentioned,
  • Not Synced
    speaking against the Holy Ghost.'
  • Not Synced
He asked her, 'Have you been
  • Not Synced
    speaking against the Holy Ghost?'
  • Not Synced
'Oh no, I have not done that,' said she.
  • Not Synced
    'What then do you mean?
  • Not Synced
    What is your unpardonable sin?'
  • Not Synced
    She gave no answer."
  • Not Synced
You see, that's the thing that you would
  • Not Synced
    ask somebody is
  • Not Synced
have you been speaking against the Spirit?
  • Not Synced
I mean, you remember what those Jews did?
  • Not Synced
    They were saying that Jesus
    had an unclean spirit.
  • Not Synced
    (incomplete thought)
  • Not Synced
And they were doing it maliciously.
  • Not Synced
    They were doing it willfully;
  • Not Synced
    purposely.
  • Not Synced
    It's not like a thought
    shot through their minds,
  • Not Synced
    and they're like, "Oh no!
    I thought that thought!
  • Not Synced
Now I've committed the unpardonable sin!"
  • Not Synced
    They're attacking Christ.
  • Not Synced
    They're maliciously saying
  • Not Synced
    He casts out demons
    by the prince of demons.
  • Not Synced
    You see what they're doing?
  • Not Synced
And she said, "No, I have not been."
  • Not Synced
    "She gave no answer.
  • Not Synced
    I continued to ask,
  • Not Synced
    'When did you commit
    this unpardonable sin?'
  • Not Synced
    She said nothing.
  • Not Synced
'Tell me what it is.' She said nothing.
  • Not Synced
'How came you to commit it?'
  • Not Synced
    She said nothing.
  • Not Synced
    'What makes you think
    you've committed it?'
  • Not Synced
She said, 'God would have forgiven me
  • Not Synced
    before this time if I
    had not committed it.'
  • Not Synced
'Before this time? What do you mean?'
  • Not Synced
'Why I have been a great while
  • Not Synced
    seeking religion.'
  • Not Synced
    He answered, 'Because you've
    been so long seeking it,
  • Not Synced
you think it's no present fault of yours
  • Not Synced
that you have not found it?
  • Not Synced
But that God will not forgive you
  • Not Synced
    because months ago you committed
  • Not Synced
    the unpardonable sin?
  • Not Synced
    Is that what you mean?'
  • Not Synced
    'Yes sir.'
  • Not Synced
    'Very well,' said I.
  • Not Synced
'I suppose you want nothing more of me
  • Not Synced
    if you're unpardonable.
  • Not Synced
    I can do nothing for
you if that is the case.
  • Not Synced
I may as well leave you.
  • Not Synced
You may go to your closet and tell God
  • Not Synced
    as you kneel before Him
  • Not Synced
that you are willing to repent,
  • Not Synced
that you're willing to trust in Christ,
  • Not Synced
you're willing to obey God in all things,
  • Not Synced
and that it's no fault of yours
  • Not Synced
    that you're not a Christian.
  • Not Synced
Tell Him that the only thing now
  • Not Synced
    in your way to salvation
  • Not Synced
    is that old unpardonable sin
  • Not Synced
    which He will not forgive.
  • Not Synced
    Goodbye.'
  • Not Synced
    I left her at once."
  • Not Synced
    Now, you think.
  • Not Synced
I would say that to this man.
  • Not Synced
I would say that to anybody
  • Not Synced
    who thinks they've committed
    the unpardonable sin.
  • Not Synced
See, that gets right to the point.
  • Not Synced
Are you saying that you're ready
  • Not Synced
to take Christ at His word
  • Not Synced
and trust what He's done on that cross?
  • Not Synced
You're ready to turn from your sin?
  • Not Synced
    You're ready to follow Christ
  • Not Synced
    and take His commandments
  • Not Synced
as your daily meat, your daily food,
  • Not Synced
    and follow Him?
  • Not Synced
    You're ready to do that?
  • Not Synced
    You desire to do that?
  • Not Synced
    And you're telling me
  • Not Synced
    that you're actually repentant
  • Not Synced
    and you're believing,
  • Not Synced
    but God won't save you
  • Not Synced
    because of that unpardonable sin?
  • Not Synced
You see, that would make God to be a liar.
  • Not Synced
Because God says if you trust His Son
  • Not Synced
    you will be saved.
  • Not Synced
    You will not be ashamed.
  • Not Synced
Scripture says that if you repent,
  • Not Synced
    you will not likewise perish.
  • Not Synced
If you don't repent, you will perish.
  • Not Synced
If you do repent, you'll be saved.
  • Not Synced
    God's a liar otherwise.
  • Not Synced
    So, he walks away.
  • Not Synced
Now listen, let me tell you this.
  • Not Synced
    Too often, especially
    with young believers,
  • Not Synced
you can feel like if people
  • Not Synced
    are willing to listen,
  • Not Synced
you'll just talk on and on and on
  • Not Synced
and on and on and on...
  • Not Synced
    Some of you are getting
    involved in door-to-door ministry.
  • Not Synced
You do not have to talk to
    somebody for two hours
  • Not Synced
just because they're willing to talk.
  • Not Synced
You can tell them the truth.
  • Not Synced
    If they have valid questions,
  • Not Synced
you can seek to answer them,
  • Not Synced
but you don't have to go in circles.
  • Not Synced
    You can walk away.
  • Not Synced
Do you notice that the rich young ruler,
  • Not Synced
    Jesus didn't debate with him.
  • Not Synced
He laid it all on the
    table, and that was it.
  • Not Synced
    In that case, Jesus wasn't
    the one that walked away;
  • Not Synced
    the rich, young ruler was.
  • Not Synced
But you know what? Same thing.
  • Not Synced
You do not have to go on and on.
  • Not Synced
    I'm afraid that many
    less mature Christians
  • Not Synced
would have sat with this girl
  • Not Synced
and they would have almost carried her
  • Not Synced
    into the kingdom.
  • Not Synced
    He walked.
  • Not Synced
And you know he often did that.
  • Not Synced
    You know, Asahel Nettleton -
  • Not Synced
he was a contemporary of Ichabod Spencer.
  • Not Synced
    He was very greatly used
  • Not Synced
    in the second Great Awakening.
  • Not Synced
He would walk away from whole churches.
  • Not Synced
He would stay away from whole churches.
  • Not Synced
    If he saw that their
    attitudes weren't right
  • Not Synced
    about revival;
  • Not Synced
    if he saw that they
    weren't trusting the Lord,
  • Not Synced
    they were trusting him...
  • Not Synced
    (Incomplete thought)
  • Not Synced
It's not our calling to simply say
  • Not Synced
as much as we possibly can
  • Not Synced
to every single person in this world.
  • Not Synced
In fact, we're told things like
  • Not Synced
don't cast your pearls before swine.
  • Not Synced
    Jesus told His own disciples
  • Not Synced
    if they don't receive you,
  • Not Synced
    you shake the dust off
your feet and hit the road.
  • Not Synced
It's amazing sometimes we feel like
  • Not Synced
we just have to go on and on and on,
  • Not Synced
    like our multitude of words
  • Not Synced
    is going to persuade them.
  • Not Synced
    You know what? If they
    don't receive the truth,
  • Not Synced
there's a place just to walk away.
  • Not Synced
    And sometimes that can
    be the most powerful thing,
  • Not Synced
    because what you're doing -
  • Not Synced
    you gave them the truth,
  • Not Synced
now you're leaving them with the Lord.
  • Not Synced
By the way, it's the Lord you need to have
  • Not Synced
speak to people through your words
  • Not Synced
more than your multitude of words.
  • Not Synced
    "The next day..."
  • Not Synced
See, he walked away from her
  • Not Synced
    and how she's not comfortable.
  • Not Synced
Her own conscience is going crazy.
  • Not Synced
"The next day, she sent for me again.
  • Not Synced
I found her as I did not expect."
  • Not Synced
    See, he expected that this
    was going to be beneficial.
  • Not Synced
And that she'd come to the Lord.
  • Not Synced
He said, "I found her in
    the same state of mind;
  • Not Synced
brooding sadly over the unpardonable sin.
  • Not Synced
    After much conversation and aiming
  • Not Synced
    to remove the difficulty
  • Not Synced
and assuring her of her error,
  • Not Synced
    she still insisted,
  • Not Synced
    'I committed the unpardonable sin.
  • Not Synced
    I know I have. I know I have.
  • Not Synced
    I know I have.'
  • Not Synced
I desired her after a few moments
  • Not Synced
    to quit her agitation
  • Not Synced
and fix her thoughts on things
  • Not Synced
which I was going to say to her."
  • Not Synced
You know what he said to her?
  • Not Synced
    He said young lady,
  • Not Synced
I'm going to speak to you plainly.
  • Not Synced
He said you're going to understand
  • Not Synced
    every word I say.
  • Not Synced
    That's good.
  • Not Synced
"Some of the things which I shall say
  • Not Synced
    may surprise you,
  • Not Synced
but I want you to remember them.
  • Not Synced
    All along through the summer
  • Not Synced
I've treated you with the utmost kindness
  • Not Synced
    and indulgence.
  • Not Synced
    I've always come to you
    when you've sent for me
  • Not Synced
    and many times when you
    have not sent for me.
  • Not Synced
    It's because I feel
    kindly towards you still
  • Not Synced
and wish to do you good
  • Not Synced
    that I shall now say
    some very plain things
  • Not Synced
    which you may not like,
    but they are true."
  • Not Synced
    This is another thing.
  • Not Synced

  • Not Synced
you often have to tell them things
  • Not Synced
    that they don't like.

  • Not Synced
    when to walk away,

  • Not Synced
    hard things to people.
  • Not Synced

  • Not Synced
You get a person that's struggling
  • Not Synced
    with the unpardonable sin.
  • Not Synced

  • Not Synced

  • Not Synced

  • Not Synced
They want you to pity them.
  • Not Synced
They want you to feel bad for them.
  • Not Synced
They want you to enter in
  • Not Synced
    to their pity party.
  • Not Synced
Now, you're going to maybe think
  • Not Synced
    what he says is cruel,
  • Not Synced
but I want you to hear him very carefully.
