The Church Is One. False Prophets Will Pay - Paul Washer

  • 0:05 - 0:10
(Jer. 32) Verse 38: "They shall be My people
  • 0:10 - 0:12
and I will be their God."
  • 0:12 - 0:16
He doesn't say I hope so, maybe, if I get lucky,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
oh if I can get enough evangelists to work with me,
  • 0:18 - 0:20
maybe this will all come out right.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
He says "I am going to pull a people for Me.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
A people that I am going to give to My Son."
  • 0:27 - 0:32
And He says, "they shall be My people and I will be their God."
  • 0:32 - 0:40
Look at this: "And I will give them one heart and one way"
  • 0:40 - 0:42
Now don't be angry with me,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
any angrier than you already are, at least.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    But listen to me,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
the 70s and 80s and all the Jesus marches,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    and everyone weeping and crying,
  • 0:52 - 0:56
"the church is so divided, the church is not one"
  • 0:56 - 0:57
My dear friend, let me tell you something:
  • 0:57 - 0:59
if the church is not one, there is a prayer out there
  • 0:59 - 1:02
that God the father did not answer for His Son.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
And this new covenant promise has failed.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
So I want to redirect you a little bit.
  • 1:08 - 1:09
I want to submit to you:
  • 1:09 - 1:13
the church is one, she's always been one. (P)
  • 1:13 - 1:15
Have you ever sat down on an airplane
  • 1:15 - 1:21
or maybe met someone in a marketplace you didn't even know?
  • 1:21 - 1:23
And you being maybe baptist or mennonite
  • 1:23 - 1:28
or this or that, but truly evangelical, truly christian,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
you talk to them for no more than a few minutes
  • 1:30 - 1:33
and you discover, BAM! He is a believer!
  • 1:33 - 1:38
    This is a Live One!
  • 1:38 - 1:43
And at that moment, you'd give your life for him. (P)
  • 1:43 - 1:44
I remember one time, we were in
  • 1:44 - 1:46
departamento amazonas (Amazon department) in Peru
  • 1:46 - 1:48
and it was during the time of the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path)
  • 1:48 - 1:50
and the civil war that was going on there.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
We rode 22 hours up in the back of a grain truck
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    under a black tarp.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
And about midnight, we pulled the tarp off,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
the truck stopped, and we jumped off into the jungle.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
we stayed the night just at the edge of the jungle
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    and made our ways up
  • 2:02 - 2:05
to a place called "ingenio en tambolik"
  • 2:05 - 2:07
About halfway up, we got lost in the dark the next day.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
So we were praying, me and my dear friend Paco,
  • 2:11 - 2:13
"O God give us some direction, we're lost."
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    If we're found in here,
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    the terrorists owned the place,
  • 2:16 - 2:19
the military wouldn't even go in.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
And we cried out, "O God give us some direction, Help us"
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    We heard a bell
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    then we heard somebody talking.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
It was a strange conversation at first, we thought.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
Then we realised it was a little boy
  • 2:32 - 2:34
coming in from the fields with his burro.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
and he was talking to his burro.
  • 2:37 - 2:38
And so we got behind him and followed him.
  • 2:38 - 2:44
Then, we stood on the edge of the town, a little village with huts.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
And I said, Paco, if the terrorists own this thing,
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    we're dead.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
But we've got to go somewhere.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    So we got down,
  • 2:52 - 2:56
walked up to a man who was drunk in the dark
  • 2:56 - 3:00
and said, "are there brothers here?"
  • 3:00 - 3:03
because everybody knows what that means in the mountains.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    It means a real christian.
  • 3:06 - 3:12
And He said, "the old woman over there."
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    So I went over there,
  • 3:15 - 3:18
it was an old nazarene woman.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
And I knocked on the door,
  • 3:21 - 3:28
I said, "I am an evangelical pastor, please help me."
  • 3:28 - 3:30
That old woman reached out with that lantern,
  • 3:30 - 3:32
she grabbed me, she pulled me inside,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
she grabbed Paco, took us down,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
her house was cut out of a cliff in the mud,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
and she took us down into the basement
  • 3:39 - 3:41
where there was some hay, and chickens and things.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
And she sat us there and she lit a lamp
  • 3:43 - 3:45
and then a little boy came in, and she called to him and said:
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    "Go get the other brothers,"
  • 3:47 - 3:49
and they started bringing chickens and Yucca,
  • 3:49 - 3:52
and everything else, risking their lives, why?
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    Because we are One! (P)
  • 3:54 - 3:57
Stop saying all these silly things that you are saying,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
that the body of Christ is divided,
  • 3:59 - 4:01
and its a mess and its full of sin,
  • 4:01 - 4:07
I will not talk about the bride of Christ that way if I was you.
  • 4:07 - 4:12
What you've got is a bunch of goats, and tares among the sheep,
  • 4:12 - 4:15
and because very little biblical compassionate
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    church discipline is practiced,
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    they live among the sheep;
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    they feed on the sheep;
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    and they destroy the sheep.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
And those of you who are leaders in the church
  • 4:24 - 4:26
are going to pay a high penalty
  • 4:26 - 4:28
when you stand before the one who loves them
  • 4:28 - 4:31
because you did not have enough courage
  • 4:31 - 4:35
to stand up and confront the wicked. (P)
  • 4:35 - 4:40
As a matter of fact, listen to me:
  • 4:40 - 4:42
The average scenario in North America
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    with regard to churches,
  • 4:44 - 4:47
by and large, the churches are democracies,
  • 4:47 - 4:48
and I don't want to get into
  • 4:48 - 4:51
the ifs or pros or cons of that.
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    But here's what happens:
  • 4:52 - 4:55
Because the preaching of the gospel is so low,
  • 4:55 - 5:00
the majority in the churches are carnal, lost people.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
And because it is a democracy,
  • 5:02 - 5:06
they, by and large, govern the direction of the church.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
And because the pastor doesn't want to lose
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    the great number of people,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
and because he has wrong ideas
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    regarding evangelism and true conversion,
  • 5:13 - 5:15
he caters to the wicked in his church.
  • 5:15 - 5:18
And this little group of true sheep
  • 5:18 - 5:20
that belong to Jesus Christ are sitting there,
  • 5:20 - 5:22
in the midst of all the theater,
  • 5:22 - 5:24
in the midst of all the worldliness,
  • 5:24 - 5:26
in the midst of all the multimedia going,
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    we just want to worship Jesus;
  • 5:28 - 5:30
and we just want someone to teach us the bible
  • 5:30 - 5:36
and pastors are going to pay for that. (P)
  • 5:36 - 5:44
    It's true. It's just true.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
You're saying, "Oh you're just angry."
  • 5:46 - 5:50
My dear friend, do you know what it costs me to say this?
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    It's true.
  • 5:53 - 5:58
Trying to keep together a bunch of wicked people,
  • 5:58 - 6:01
while a little flock in the midst of them
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    are starving to death,
  • 6:04 - 6:05
and are made to go in directions
  • 6:05 - 6:08
they don't want to go with the carnal majority. (P)
  • 6:08 - 6:11
Listen to me, if my wife
  • 6:11 - 6:14
was at walmart late one night,
  • 6:14 - 6:17
and you walked by as a man
  • 6:17 - 6:20
and you saw that 2 men were abusing her,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    3, 4, 5, 10 men
  • 6:22 - 6:25
were abusing her and hurting her,
  • 6:25 - 6:26
and you put your head down
  • 6:26 - 6:29
in the name of self-preservation, and you walked by,
  • 6:29 - 6:31
I want to tell you something my friend,
  • 6:31 - 6:32
I will not only look for those 10 men,
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    I will look for you.
  • 6:35 - 6:41
It is the bride of Christ, and she is precious to him.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
It's going to cost you to serve Jesus.
  • 6:43 - 6:44
It could cost you your church,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    your reputation, and your denomination,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    absolutely everything;
  • 6:48 - 6:56
but the bride of Jesus Christ is worth it. (P)
  • 6:56 - 7:00
And look what it says, I love this.
  • 7:00 - 7:02
look at (verse) 39. "I will give them one heart
  • 7:02 - 7:04
and one way" and what is that way?
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    it's Christ and His holiness.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
Every true believer I have ever met
  • 7:09 - 7:12
spoke much of Christ, and had a longing desire
  • 7:12 - 7:16
    to be more holy than they were;
  • 7:16 - 7:17
    more conformed to Christ.
  • 7:17 - 7:19
And look: “I will give them one heart and one way
  • 7:19 - 7:22
that they may fear me always, for their own good
  • 7:22 - 7:24
and for the good of their children after them."
  • 7:24 - 7:27
oh what a text that is. But let's go on:
  • 7:27 - 7:30
"I will make an everlasting covenant with them,
  • 7:30 - 7:35
that I will not turn away from them, to do them good."
  • 7:35 - 7:39
    Now, we just read this,
  • 7:39 - 7:44
and so many people who are wicked, who are lost,
  • 7:44 - 7:45
they just go to church on Sunday,
  • 7:45 - 7:46
    they hear this verse:
  • 7:46 - 7:49
"Yes, God has made an everlasting covenant with me.
  • 7:49 - 7:52
He will never turn away from me; never, never.
  • 7:52 - 7:55
I am secure because of God’s grace."
  • 7:55 - 7:57
But, they fail to read the second part.
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    And look what it says:
  • 7:58 - 8:00
“I will make an everlasting covenant with them,
  • 8:00 - 8:03
    that I will not turn away from them, to do them good;
  • 8:03 - 8:06
and I will put the fear of me in their hearts,
  • 8:06 - 8:09
so that they will not turn away from me.”
  • 8:09 - 8:12
The evidence that God has made an everlasting covenant with you, sir,
  • 8:12 - 8:14
is that He has put the fear of God in you,
  • 8:14 - 8:16
so that you will not turn away from Him.
  • 8:16 - 8:19
And if you turn away from Him, and He does not discipline you,
  • 8:19 - 8:21
and you continue turning away from Him,
  • 8:21 - 8:24
it is evidence that He has not put His fear in you,
  • 8:24 - 8:25
    you have not been regenerated,
  • 8:25 - 8:32
and you have no covenant with God at all.
  • 8:32 - 8:35
    It's true. (P)
  • 8:35 - 8:37
He says "Pay close attention to yourself
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    and to your teaching.
  • 8:39 - 8:41
    Preserve in these things,
  • 8:41 - 8:44
for as you do this, you will ensure salvation
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    both for yourself,
  • 8:46 - 8:48
and for those who hear you." 1 timothy 4:16
  • 8:48 - 8:52
Now, let's just finish with this:
  • 8:52 - 8:54
this verse means almost nothing in the
  • 8:54 - 8:56
    evangelical community today.
  • 8:56 - 8:58
How many pastors do you think,
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    and preachers take it seriously.
  • 9:00 - 9:02
"I need to pay close attention to myself
  • 9:02 - 9:05
    to ensure salvation for me
  • 9:05 - 9:08
and for those who hear me."
  • 9:08 - 9:09
    I have a question pastor:
  • 9:09 - 9:10
when was the last time you examined your
  • 9:10 - 9:13
own life to see if you are in the faith?
  • 9:13 - 9:16
to see if you really know him? (P)
  • 9:16 - 9:20
    You see, My dear friend,
  • 9:20 - 9:24
    I have great assurance.
  • 9:24 - 9:26
When I study my own conversion,
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    when I discuss it with other men;
  • 9:28 - 9:30
when I look over the 25 years
  • 9:30 - 9:31
    of my pilgrimage with Christ,
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    I have great assurance
  • 9:33 - 9:36
of having come to know Him.
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    But even now,
  • 9:37 - 9:41
if I were to depart from the faith,
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    and walk away,
  • 9:44 - 9:46
and keep going in that direction,
  • 9:46 - 9:51
    into heresy, into worldliness,
  • 9:51 - 9:53
it could be the greatest of proofs
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    that I never knew Him;
  • 9:55 - 9:58
that the whole thing was a work of the flesh.
  • 9:58 - 10:00
I know what I am saying is astounding to you.
  • 10:00 - 10:01
    You think, O my!
  • 10:01 - 10:04
I've never heard such a thing.
  • 10:04 - 10:10
    Read "Pilgrim's Progress."
  • 10:10 - 10:11
    "Pay close attention to yourself,
  • 10:11 - 10:12
    and to your teaching.
  • 10:12 - 10:14
    Preserve in these things,
  • 10:14 - 10:16
    for as you do this,
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    you will ensure salvation,
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    both for yourself,
  • 10:19 - 10:21
and for those who hear you."
  • 10:21 - 10:28
    May God bless His church.
