The Only News That Matters: Jesus is the Light - Ryan Fullerton

  • 0:00 - 0:02
When Paul says, "the night is far gone,
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    the day is at hand,"
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    the day he's speaking about
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    is a day of salvation.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    It's wonderful to remember
  • 0:11 - 0:14
that the coming of Christ the first time
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    is described for us in
    the Gospel of Matthew
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    as a missionary sunrise.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
    It's a sunrise that lit
    up a darkened world
  • 0:23 - 0:25
that had no knowledge of God
  • 0:25 - 0:27
and was utterly in the dark.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    In Matthew 4:16,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    Jesus is walking and talking
  • 0:31 - 0:34
in a part of Israel full of foreigners.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
He's walking and talking in some regions
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    that had not only Jews
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    but also had Gentiles.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
And when Jesus came and lived among them,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
it is described as a sunrise.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
Listen to these words from Matthew 4.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
"He went and lived in Capernaum
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    by the sea (that's Jesus),
  • 0:54 - 0:58
in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    so that what was spoken
    by the prophet Isaiah
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    might be fulfilled.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    'The land of Zebulun
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    and the land of Naphtali,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
the way of the sea beyond the Jordan,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    the Galilee of the Gentiles,
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    the people dwelling in darkness
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    have seen a great light
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    and for those dwelling
  • 1:17 - 1:19
in the regions of the shadow of death,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    a light has dawned.'"
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    Do you see what's happening?
  • 1:23 - 1:24
When Christ comes into the world,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    it's like the sky begins
to go from black to blue.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
It's like the sun begins to
    come up over the horizon
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    and these Gentile nations
    living in northern Israel
  • 1:33 - 1:35
who had no insight into anything -
  • 1:35 - 1:37
they could read all the best books.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
They were reading in the dark.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
Everything man does is in this dark night.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
And then Jesus comes on the scene
  • 1:44 - 1:46
and it's like a missionary light
  • 1:46 - 1:48
that is expanded and that is worked
  • 1:48 - 1:50
into the lives of these Gentiles
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    and He begins to shine
    His light upon them.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
And then, let me go back to
the Old Testament if I could
  • 1:56 - 1:59
where we get this marvelous prophecy
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    of what will happen when
the light comes on the scene.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
In Isaiah 60, we have this prophecy
  • 2:04 - 2:07
of the light of God shining on Israel,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
and then Israel shining its light
  • 2:09 - 2:11
and then all the nations coming in.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
Let me read it to you. It says this:
  • 2:13 - 2:16
"Arise, shine, for your light has come
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    and the glory of the
    Lord has risen upon you."
  • 2:19 - 2:21
So here's Israel under the light of Jesus.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
And it says, "The glory of the Lord
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    has risen upon you.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
For behold, darkness shall cover the earth
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    and thick darkness the people,
  • 2:29 - 2:32
but the Lord will arise upon you.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
and His glory will be seen upon you,
  • 2:34 - 2:38
and the nations shall come to your light
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    and kings to the
    brightness of your rising."
  • 2:40 - 2:41
Do you see what's happening here?
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    This little tiny country
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    on the borders of the Mediterranean;
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    this little nothing country
  • 2:46 - 2:49
had the light of the glory
    of God shine on them.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
And now for the last 2,000 years,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
Gentile nations have been streaming in.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
You go, "That seems very amazing."
  • 2:56 - 2:58
No, that's why you're here this morning!
  • 2:58 - 3:00
You wouldn't be here this morning
  • 3:00 - 3:02
if the light hadn't shined on Israel.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
And now a bunch of pagan Americans,
  • 3:04 - 3:04
    here they are.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Brazilians, Canadians -
  • 3:06 - 3:08
people from all over the world
  • 3:08 - 3:11
have streamed to the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 3:11 - 3:12
People from all over the planet
  • 3:12 - 3:16
have seen Christ and His glory.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
And they've come to Him. Why on earth?
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    You in the dark,
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    you who have no capacity
    to receive any truth,
  • 3:22 - 3:24
you who's locked into the flesh
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    totally oblivious to all truth,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
you who's locked into the world
  • 3:28 - 3:30
just going with the flow and
    with what the world says,
  • 3:30 - 3:34
you who's utterly lied to by the devil,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
why on earth would you ever say
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    to any word that
    drops out of Jesus' mouth,
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    "Yes, amen! I believe that!"
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    Why would you do that?
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    It's because the sovereign
    God of the universe
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    is shining His light,
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    shone it on Israel,
  • 3:47 - 3:51
    shone it in this missionary
    sunrise when Jesus came.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
And now the people can't stop coming.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    Wake up! Wake up!
  • 3:56 - 3:58
This is what's happening in the world.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
This is what's happening in the world.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    This is what should be
    on the nightly news
  • 4:02 - 4:04
that more people came to Christ today!
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    The King! The King!
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    The King is gaining more
    followers again today!
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    Oh, and another tribe -
  • 4:09 - 4:11
another tribe has come to Him!
  • 4:11 - 4:13
I heard from one of our missionaries today
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    Iranians are just coming
    to Christ like crazy.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
There's so many Iranians coming to Christ.
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    Does it make the news?
  • 4:18 - 4:19
    It doesn't make the news.
  • 4:19 - 4:23
Is it news? It's the only
    news that matters.
  • 4:23 - 4:27
The Lord Jesus Christ is the light.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    He makes the day.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    The day is dawning.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
And this world is not under the power
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    of the flesh alone anymore.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    Now there's a people
  • 4:42 - 4:46
under the power of the Spirit.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
Oh, the works of the flesh are evident,
  • 4:48 - 4:51
but so is the fruit of the Spirit -
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    love, joy, peace, patience, faithfulness,
  • 4:53 - 4:58
    self-control are being
    formed in this new people
  • 4:58 - 5:02
who have seen the light of Christ.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
And not only is the flesh
    not dominating everyone
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    because the Spirit's moved in,
  • 5:06 - 5:10
but the world is not the only
    force in the world either.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    Now there's this beautiful
    reality called the church.
  • 5:13 - 5:16
If the world is the group of people
  • 5:16 - 5:21
that makes truth seem implausible -
  • 5:21 - 5:23
you know where I'm going -
  • 5:23 - 5:26
then the church is that group of people
  • 5:26 - 5:30
that makes the truth seem plausible.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    Peter tells us,
  • 5:32 - 5:37
"You (church) are a chosen race,
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    a royal priesthood,
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    a holy nation,
  • 5:41 - 5:43
a people for His own possession
  • 5:43 - 5:44
    that you may proclaim
  • 5:44 - 5:46
the excellencies of Him who called you
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    out of darkness
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    and into His marvelous light.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    Once you were not a people;
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    now you are God's people.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    Once you had not received mercy;
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    now you have received mercy."
  • 6:01 - 6:03
We are the people who encourage each other
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    with a holy peer pressure,
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    with a godly accountability.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
We call each other to keep
    looking at the light.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
The world says sin is good,
  • 6:11 - 6:12
    sin is worth it.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
The consequences won't be that bad.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    In fact, the consequences
    don't even exist.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
The church is there to say to one another:
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    Christ is worth it.
  • 6:20 - 6:23
The consequences of sin are unthinkable.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
And the Gospel's enough to forgive you
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    and keep you going
  • 6:26 - 6:31
all the way until the very end.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
This is the night and the
    day we're talking about.
