Church Leaders Casually Texting Single Sisters? - Tim Conway

  • 0:08 - 0:12
Ok, here's the second question. This comes from Mariah.
  • 0:12 - 0:17
Now, look, some of these you say,
  • 0:17 - 0:21
"really? I mean, isn't the answer obvious?"
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    But you'd be amazed pastorally
  • 0:24 - 0:27
how often we have to deal with questions
  • 0:27 - 0:32
    that might seem obvious.
  • 0:32 - 0:37
Mariah: "Is it ok for married brothers..."
  • 0:37 - 0:41
(so we've got married Christans, men)
  • 0:41 - 0:47
"In leadership positions - pastors, elders, deacons, etc. -
  • 0:47 - 0:55
to casually text or email single sisters?
  • 0:55 - 0:59
Why or why not? Are there any exceptions?"
  • 0:59 - 1:01
I'm not sure why Mariah would ask this, but...
  • 1:01 - 1:09
I can imagine if a young lady, newly saved, in a church,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
she hears that some of her friends are
  • 1:12 - 1:20
receiving casual texts from church officers who are married.
  • 1:20 - 1:26
Is that reason for alarm? For concern? You raise your eyebrows?
  • 1:26 - 1:37
If it was happening in this church would it just be normal, normative, ok?
  • 1:37 - 1:40
I mean, you know what came to my mind,
  • 1:40 - 1:44
is she ought to go ask those men's wives.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
Right? I mean, ladies, come on.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
I think most of the ladies in here are single.
  • 1:51 - 1:56
But ladies if you were married to a church officer and your husband...
  • 1:56 - 2:04
now did you notice the adjective? "Casually texting."
  • 2:04 - 2:10
I text with certain sisters in the church - not casually -
  • 2:10 - 2:16
because it's easier than a phone call.
  • 2:16 - 2:21
But casually, ladies, would you be ok with that?
  • 2:21 - 2:25
Or would you say there's exceptions.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
There would be times it would be ok.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
But just to find out, if you found your husband's phone...
  • 2:32 - 2:34
maybe getting ready to do laundry,
  • 2:34 - 2:36
empty his pockets, hey, there's his phone,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
and you see, well, he's texting single sisters
  • 2:39 - 2:42
in the church casually. Are you ok with that?
  • 2:42 - 2:47
    Grace, you ok with that?
  • 2:47 - 2:54
    Or does it depend?
  • 2:54 - 2:59
    Is everybody ok with it?
  • 2:59 - 3:06
    (in the background, "No!")
  • 3:06 - 3:09
Emotional attachment? Is there a text in the Bible that says,
  • 3:09 - 3:13
"Thou shalt not text single women."
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    Of course not.
  • 3:15 - 3:24
(in background) How would she feel if she was married
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    and someone was doing that?
  • 3:27 - 3:34
Tim: Right. That would be very appropriate to put that back in her lap.
  • 3:34 - 3:38
But she doesn't say if she's single or not. So I don't know -
  • 3:38 - 3:43
she may actually be the wife of one of the guys, I'm not sure.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
There's not enough detail there for me to know.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
But we know this, just a couple texts:
  • 3:50 - 3:56
Matthew 15:19, "Out of the heart comes evil thoughts, murder, adultery,
  • 3:56 - 4:00
sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
These are what defile a person."
  • 4:03 - 4:10
Or if you think of 1 Cor 6:18, "Flee from sexual immorality."
  • 4:10 - 4:16
Here's a thing, let's just think about this,
  • 4:16 - 4:27
Men in ministry fall all the time. All the time.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    It happens a lot.
  • 4:29 - 4:34
    Single, young ladies are vulnerable.
  • 4:34 - 4:43
And the thing is are we really ignorant as to how infidelity happens?
  • 4:43 - 4:51
We're not. It's like James is talking about.
  • 4:51 - 5:00
There are the guys that they prey on women.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
They get in places of power and they prey on them.
  • 5:03 - 5:12
Their idea right up front is - there's no restraint.
  • 5:12 - 5:16
But I have a feeling that a lot of the men that fall,
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    they never thought they would.
  • 5:19 - 5:25
They did not start out intending to.
  • 5:25 - 5:28
How does infidelity happen when at first there is no intention to it?
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    It doesn't happen like that.
  • 5:31 - 5:35
It happens by staging, by degrees, by steps.
  • 5:35 - 5:39
And what happens? Well, sexual immorality is a matter of the heart.
  • 5:39 - 5:45
What happens is the heart gets involved, the affections, the emotions.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
And how does it happen? Well, through communication.
  • 5:48 - 5:52
    Certainly through communication.
  • 5:52 - 5:55
And what happens is that there's
  • 5:55 - 5:59
communication that goes back and forth.
  • 5:59 - 6:05
And we're not ignorant about this.
  • 6:05 - 6:10
And the thing is if you're in ministry,
  • 6:10 - 6:13
you're especially going to be a target of the devil,
  • 6:13 - 6:20
and it's just... casual - that's the thing.
  • 6:20 - 6:26
    It's dangerous. It's dangerous.
  • 6:26 - 6:31
And it's private. You end up having private communication
  • 6:31 - 6:34
with a woman who's not your wife
  • 6:34 - 6:36
when you do have a wife,
  • 6:36 - 6:39
and that's exactly the kind of communication where
  • 6:39 - 6:43
suddenly the hook goes in the heart.
  • 6:43 - 6:46
It's just that kind of communication.
  • 6:46 - 6:49
I'm not saying that it always leads to that.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
But certainly the men that fall,
  • 6:51 - 6:54
they were certainly doing things just like this.
  • 6:54 - 6:58
And if we're supposed to flee from this,
  • 6:58 - 7:01
we need to run from it like you'd run from
  • 7:01 - 7:07
Catholicism like the plague, you need to run from these kind of things.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
We need to be very careful.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
Because the moment we get presumptuous and say,
  • 7:12 - 7:15
"Well, I can play with that fire and it's not going to burn me,"
  • 7:15 - 7:17
    that's the second God -
  • 7:17 - 7:21
you may even be a true child of God, and God may
  • 7:21 - 7:27
allow you, like David, to fall flat on your face,
  • 7:27 - 7:30
and it can just destroy your life, your marriage,
  • 7:30 - 7:33
your family, your ministry for sure.
