GORUCO 2009 - SOLID Object-Oriented Design by Sandi Metz

  • Not Synced
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
Can you hear me? Yes, Sebastian?
    Can you hear me?
  • Not Synced
    So I'm Sandi Metz.
    I'm from Duke University.
  • Not Synced
I know that you guys, some
    people think of the,
  • Not Synced
    of universities as being just
    like the enterprise except
  • Not Synced
    - with lower standards. [laughs]
    - (audience laughs)
  • Not Synced
There's a little truth in that.
Honestly - there's a little truth in that.
  • Not Synced
But also universities are places where
  • Not Synced
we get more freedom to do,
  • Not Synced
to be out on the leading edge
    of software.
  • Not Synced
And because of that at Duke --
  • Not Synced
(I'm sorry, they told me to stand
    back here in the light)
  • Not Synced
At Duke we've been writing Smalltalk apps
    since the early 1990's.
  • Not Synced
So I have 10 years of experience of Smalltalk.
  • Not Synced
So if this were a weekday, there would be
  • Not Synced
someone in my office doing maintenance
  • Not Synced
on a production application that's written
    Smalltalk
  • Not Synced
    that does grants management
    at Duke University.
  • Not Synced
They would be working on it right now.
  • Not Synced
We're a little bit different than
    a lot of you
  • Not Synced
in that we don't have millions of users,
  • Not Synced
we don't have high transaction rates,
  • Not Synced
we don't have huge piles of data.
  • Not Synced
But what we do have is
  • Not Synced
    applications that have been around
    a long time
  • Not Synced
and that get changed really every day.
  • Not Synced
    So, the apps that I write - I don't
    actually use myself,
  • Not Synced
so you can't really say that
    "we eat our own dogfood"
  • Not Synced
but I look at leftovers every day.
  • Not Synced
And I have for a long long time.
  • Not Synced
    But enough about me.
  • Not Synced
    Let's talk about you.
  • Not Synced
    Because you're here,
  • Not Synced
    I'm guessing that you've written
    an application.
  • Not Synced
    And even though I've never
    seen that app,
  • Not Synced
    there's something I can say
    about it:
  • Not Synced
    It's gonna change.
