Alabama Snow & Ice Event January 2014

  • 0:00 - 0:00
  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Certainly a mess out there.
  • 0:02 - 0:03
    And our big problem--
  • 0:03 - 0:05
a lot of times, we get snow,
    and the temperature sometimes
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    will even go up
    after the snow ends.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    But, in this
    particular case, we're
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    going to stay well
    below freezing.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
So it's almost like a tundra
    out there with respect
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    to the temperatures and the
    air mass, extremely cold.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    We've got one of those
    dry, powdery snows.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    And as it settles on
    some of these roadways,
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    we're getting the ice
    that's developing.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    And it will probably stay
    there for quite a while.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
A lot of folks, they just need
help out there on the roads.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    Right.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
And I'm not sure that that
    help is coming anytime soon.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    Just be careful.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    Take care of each
    other out there.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    You were just talking
    to your husband.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    Yeah.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
We had been kind of telling
    you, we're here with you.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    My husband's in traffic
trying to get to our son.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    My son texted me that
    they were starting
  • 0:44 - 0:46
to serve lunches at their school
    because the kids are stuck.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
Their parents can't get to them.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    And my husband said
    he had picked up
  • 0:49 - 0:51
a couple of parents who had
gotten out of their cars who
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    had gotten stuck too.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    So it is happening
    all over the place.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
I mean, we haven't seen the
    northern band really fizzle
  • 0:58 - 0:58
    much.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    It just keeps re-intensifying.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
So if we can go to our
VIPIR, we can see the radar,
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    and we can see the
    temperatures overlaid.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    You can see it's
    definitely cold enough
  • 1:06 - 1:08
for this to continue to stick.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
And we've seen the one intense
    band that moved through.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    We were out interviewing Bart
    Starr, the former great NFL
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    quarterback with the
    Green Bay Packers,
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    about an upcoming interview
    for "Good Day Alabama."
  • 1:18 - 1:21
And so, now, all of a
    sudden, the snow comes down,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
and you see what 280 looks
    like going eastbound.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    A lot of people, like
    this young lady here--
  • 1:25 - 1:27
maybe you can see way down
    there, far side of the--
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    in the middle of
    the road there--
  • 1:28 - 1:31
Kerry Nivens, if you can see
    that-- people have abandoned
  • 1:31 - 1:34
their cars at this point, just
    getting up, losing patience,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and realizing they're not
    going to get anywhere.
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    So they've now
    abandoned their cars,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
and they are going on foot.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
We see a lot of people do
that up and down this road.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    We've seen a couple of
    fender-benders here.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    Luckily, there was nothing--
  • 1:45 - 1:49
--cars, I mean, move over here
to the side, and cars trying
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    to get back on Lakeshore.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
A lot of these cars have been
turning around in front of me.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    So I'm not sure what's
    ahead of me exactly.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
But I've been on the road
    for about 30 minutes,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
and I've gone less than a mile.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    I'm at the Jefferson County
    Emergency Management Agency.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    What I'm hearing from people
    downstairs is, a big problem.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    County and city
    sand crews are out.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    They're trying to get to
    those roadways that need sand.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    But cars are jamming
    the roadways.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    They can't go down those
    roads because vehicles
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    have jammed them up.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    Authorities are out trying
    to move the vehicles off
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    so the sand trucks
    can do their job.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    But it is a tedious
    process right now.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
And they're doing what they can.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    People are being
    asked to be patient.
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    If you're out--
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    --enjoy themselves.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    Let's get an update now.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Let's go to Britton Lynn.
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    She has been looking at
    the traffic conditions.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
We know it's a mess, but
    she has specifics for us.
  • 2:39 - 2:39
    Yeah.
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    And this is a look.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
I'm just going to take us
    through a few cameras real
  • 2:43 - 2:45
quick and try to tell you what
I know as fast as possible.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    Red Mountain Expressway
    at University
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    continuing to look the same.
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    It is not moving.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    And I'm surprised I'm
    even seeing cars--
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    this is the
    southbound by the way.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    But I'm surprised I'm
    even seeing cars over here
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    in the northbound lanes.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    I've barely seen any.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    It is very, very
    slick right here,
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    Red Mountain
    Expressway northbound.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    I've been watching cars
    slide off the roadway.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    Got a lot of black
    ice in this area
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    you really want
    to watch out for.
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    Another spot, this is
    I-65 at Alford Avenue.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    I haven't seen a car come
through in the past 30 minutes.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    I've been just sitting,
    watching this camera.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    At one point, there was
    a jackknifed 18-wheeler
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    in front of here.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    I've seen dozens
    of people walking.
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    I've never seen so
    many cars stranded.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    So this is I-65 northbound.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    You cannot get on I-65
    northbound right--
  • 3:32 - 3:37
    The neurosurgeon at Trinity
    Medical Center, Dr. Zenko
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    Hrynkiw--
  • 3:38 - 3:41
hope I said that right, Doctor--
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    he walked six miles yesterday.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
He got a call when he
    was at Brookwood Medical
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    Center about a
    patient at Trinity
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    who had a brain hemorrhage.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    He started to drive to
    Trinity Medical Center.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    Couldn't get there.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    Roads were all
    messed up, obviously.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
So he just left his car--
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    hoped it wouldn't
    get towed away--
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    and he hiked it.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
He walked about six miles over
    to Trinity Medical Center,
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    did the surgery.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    And the surgery, from what
    I understand, went well.
