GUILT - Eating Disorder & Self-Harm - Kati Morton Healthy Mind, Healthy Body!

  • 0:01 - 0:05
Hey everyone! This week's video is about guilt and our eating disorders or self harm.
  • 0:05 - 0:15
So stay tuned, we're gonna talk about it.
  • 0:15 - 0:22
So we just went through New Year's, Christimas, Haunnakah, Thanksgiving.
  • 0:22 - 0:28

We've had all these things happening , right? And that involves blahblahblah, can't even speak!
  • 0:28 - 0:37
That involves a lot of food, a lot of people, a lot of family members who, a lot of times, know us better than anyone.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
And so they make us feel kinda bad sometimes, right?
  • 0:38 - 0:44
And maybe we've eaten more because we're just trying to get through the evening or the event during the day or whatever it is,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
and so now, we're left feeling guilty.
  • 0:47 - 1:00
And I've talked to tons of you about how now it's the new year and we put this pressure on ourselves even though I just talked about not doing resolutions and not setting these expectiations, many of us are feeling guilty
  • 1:00 - 1:05
Or are already feelig bad about our year, right? And we're only like a week and a half into it.
  • 1:05 - 1:12
So, I want to just give you some tips and talk a little bit about how we deal with the guilt that our eating disorder gives us
  • 1:12 - 1:17
and I know a lot of you are thinking, "Well I've been talking to you about this on Twitter or facebook or tumblr, or what have you,
  • 1:17 - 1:27
but the main thing and the thing I'll always come back to with most of you is talking back to that voice because I'll tell you what, that guilt you're feeling
  • 1:27 - 1:33
that icky feeling where everyday you're like "ugh, I don't want to get up! It's terrible!" right?
  • 1:33 - 1:37
It's coming from that nasty voice, that negative voice
  • 1:37 - 1:41
It's not who we are, it's not us. It's that voice,
  • 1:41 - 1:43
whether it's our eating disorder voice, our self-harm voice,
  • 1:43 - 1:48
it's already telling us stuff like "you've already messed up so bad you can't go back,"
  • 1:48 - 1:54
"You've already cut this year and it's ruined! The whole year is ruined" and we're going back to that black and white thinking
  • 1:54 - 1:57
it's pushing us into that and we can feel it.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
We just want to throw in the towel; it's over.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
But what do we have to do?
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    We have to slow down.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    OK?
  • 2:05 - 2:08
We're going to slow it down; we're gonna start talking back.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
We're going to journal about it.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
And I know it's going to be hard,
  • 2:11 - 2:12
and you think, "But Katie, it's telling me the truth!"
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    IT'S NOT! IT's lying
  • 2:14 - 2:18
It's telling you only lies! I promise. It never tells you the truth.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    OK?
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    Just to set that straight
  • 2:21 - 2:26
So, we have to kind of slow it down and notice what it's telling us.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
We have to write it down. We have to- grab my workbook!
  • 2:29 - 2:33
I know I've been telling a lot of you to get on to it and a lot of you have downloaded it
  • 2:33 - 2:36
but you haven't quite worked on it or you started Task 1 and you're like
  • 2:36 - 2:38
"Katie, I hate your guts. It's horrible, it's hard."
  • 2:38 - 2:43
But start it. Start writing it because we have to write down what that's telling us
  • 2:43 - 2:46
what that negative, bad voice is telling us, because we have to talk back.
  • 2:46 - 2:51
Because the guilt, we'll just drown in it because it'll always stop us, right?
  • 2:51 - 2:59
And we have so much more to give, there's so much more we can do, we deserve so much more than that voice will ever let us believe
  • 2:59 - 3:02
And so in order to get to that place where we can live freely
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    We can feel uninhibited, like
  • 3:04 - 3:07
"I can do anything, I can be anything I want to be"
  • 3:07 - 3:09
We have to start talking back
  • 3:09 - 3:11
and I know many of you are saying,
  • 3:11 - 3:14
"Katie, I don't believe anything. I can't talk back to it at all."
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    Pretend that I'm there.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
Pretend that I'm the person talking back to that voice, OK?
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    What would I say?
  • 3:21 - 3:25
Well, if that voice is saying, "It's over! You've ruined it!"
    "I haven't ruined it!"
  • 3:25 - 3:28
Everybody messes up now and again. Relapses are common.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
It's about how we get back up and we keep fighting, right?
  • 3:31 - 3:34
Recovery is a process, it's not perfection.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
Think of all those little things I say.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
I know a lot of it is repetitive, but sometimes we need to hear it over and over again
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    before we're like,
  • 3:40 - 3:45
"YEAH, damn you, Katie, you're right," or "Damn it that IS right! Ah!"
  • 3:45 - 3:49
You know? Because it's frutrating. It's hard.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
The guilt is palpable. We can feel it; it's drowning us.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
And it's about time that we step up and we start to fight back
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    Because I tell you what,
  • 3:57 - 4:01
The more we talk back to it, the less power it will have
  • 4:01 - 4:05
And the more we talk about it with others, so if you have somebody to reach out to, talk to them,
  • 4:05 - 4:10
The more we talk to people about it, it'll go away
  • 4:10 - 4:13
It gets quieter. It doesn't fight back as much.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
Give me a thumbs up if you like that, right?
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    We don't want it yelling.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
We don't want to hear that voice any more, right?
  • 4:19 - 4:23
We want positive support, so reach out to people in our community.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
It is growing. People are talking back to one another and I love that.
  • 4:25 - 4:30
And we have to keep doing that because together we can fight that voice.
  • 4:30 - 4:35
We can fight the negativity, we can get stronger, and we can go on to live a free life
  • 4:35 - 4:38
which we all deserve to live.
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    Am I right?
  • 4:39 - 4:41
And also, don't forget to subscribe.
  • 4:41 - 4:45
I'm gonna Vanna White this for you~ Da-da-da-da~
  • 4:45 - 4:47
And I'll probably put that there, subscribe,
  • 4:47 - 4:52
Because then when I put up a video, because I've been doing mid-week videos every once in a while, and you don't want to miss them
  • 4:52 - 4:54
So you want to make sure you get that email
  • 4:54 - 4:57
And just keep communicating with one another
  • 4:57 - 5:01
This is a great community, right? We want to keep building.
  • 5:01 - 5:07
And I'm gonna start the comments. I know at the end of the video I've been starting the comment feed
  • 5:07 - 5:09
What am I going to say back?
  • 5:09 - 5:11
I want you to yell back.
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    Comment below.
  • 5:12 - 5:17
What's the one thing that you feel your eating disorder, your self-harm voice is telling you, what are we going to yell back?
  • 5:17 - 5:21
Let's fight, let's get on board as we work towards a healthy mind and a healthy body.
