One Minute Changes (Guitar Lesson IM-122) How to play IF Stage 2

  • 0:11 - 0:13
Hi, how ya doing, Justin here!
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    Welcome to IM-122,
    which is One Minute Changes.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
We're going to be focusing on open chords
  • 0:20 - 0:24
to E-shape major and minor bar chords.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
Now hopefully most of you remember
    back to the beginner's course
  • 0:27 - 0:29
doing a little thing called Air Changes,
  • 0:29 - 0:34
where you learnt to form the shape of the chord
in the air before you put it down.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
Now that's one of the best ways of changing
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    between your open chords
    and your bar chords.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    It's a little bit tricky
and I know many of you,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
when you get to your bar chords,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
are going to want to either put down
the bar chord first, then the shape
  • 0:47 - 0:50
or the shape and then the bar.
    They're both cool.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
To be honest most people that start with the shape
and then put the bar down
  • 0:54 - 0:58
afterwards kind of change as they develop
    and they practice
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    and they end up
putting the bar chord down first.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    But really,
    what you should be doing
  • 1:02 - 1:04
is putting the whole grip down
    at the same time.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Now, it's tricky,
  • 1:06 - 1:10
but learning it now really gets your fingers
    into the habit of forming,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    particularly the first finger
kind of rolling onto its side.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
Because that kind of happens in the air
  • 1:16 - 1:18
so when you put it down
it's no so much that you put it on flat
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    and then roll it backwards,
  • 1:20 - 1:22
which is kind of how I'm teaching you
and encouraging you to do it.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
it's a great way to learn to do it,
    to get the position right.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
But, as soon as you've got the position right,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    you want to learn
to just put it down that way
  • 1:30 - 1:32
with that bar on the side already.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    So what I've picked is
    five really common chord changes
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    between an open chord shape
    and a bar chord shape.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
And we're going to go through those
  • 1:41 - 1:44
just like we did in the beginner's course
    with the one minute changes
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    where you're going to set
your countdown timer for one minute
  • 1:47 - 1:50
and you're going to do as many
of those particular chord changes as you can
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    for that one minute
and write into your little practice schedule
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    how many changes you've done.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
It's a really super duper way
  • 1:56 - 1:59
and any of you guys that are just jumping
    into the Intermediate Course
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    and haven't gone to look
    at the Beginner's Course before,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
it's a really, really effective way
    of developing your chord changes.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    It's not just a beginner's technique,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
it's something that you can use
    at the highest level
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    when you're learning new chords.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
Going from the chords you know
    to a new chord
  • 2:12 - 2:16
as fast as you can for a minute
really trains the fingers up good.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    So, let's get to a close-up
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and check out exactly what I mean
    by these air changes,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
for those of you that don't remember,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
and I'll try and give you a couple hints
on getting that first finger rolled back to.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
So let's get to a close up.
  • 2:27 - 2:32
The first change on our one minute changes sheet
for this foundation two is between
  • 2:32 - 2:37
    an A open chord
    and a G bar chord.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
Now I know that you can play G open
and you can play A to G like that
  • 2:40 - 2:45
but as an exercise, it's a great one to be doing
A like this and then jumping over
  • 2:45 - 2:47
Can you see that when I'm doing that,
  • 2:47 - 2:48
it's not like I'm going to put that bar on,
    rolling back,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
and then put the chord shape down.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
It's jumping straight from A to the G.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    It's there already,
    it's happening in the air.
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    Weeeeeeeeeee!
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    And then down.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
And the same with the A,
    it's form the chord,
  • 3:01 - 3:04
there we are, we haven't put it down.
    Now it's down.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    It's really important to try
    and develop this skill
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    where they're kind of
getting to their positions in the air.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
It's pretty funny to do it slowly
  • 3:12 - 3:15
because it's almost like I'm trying to force them
but they do it by themselves.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
I just can't concentrate on it,
you'll probably find the same thing.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    Don't concentrate too much
on how the fingers are moving.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
But what's the trick here really,
when you're first learning to do this ?
  • 3:25 - 3:29
This is to bring them up and then point them all out
and then try to form the chord
  • 3:29 - 3:35
so you kind of get a little thing in the middle
where you're completely releasing the shape.
  • 3:35 - 3:39
That's a good way to start with it
but as soon as you're through it,
  • 3:39 - 3:45
try and get them so they just form the shape.
Now, the bar, which is the big part here :
  • 3:45 - 3:48
Now, as I've explained to you earlier,
  • 3:48 - 3:51
you're going to put the bar down straight,
and then roll onto the side,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
and then put the shape down.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
But what you should find is that,
if you've been practicing it enough,
  • 3:56 - 4:01
you can kind of put that shape down sideways
so when you start doing these
  • 4:01 - 4:03
look at it in the air
before you put the chord down
  • 4:03 - 4:08
and make sure that the first finger
is not square on, flat like that.
  • 4:08 - 4:13
When you're looking down in it,
    when you're seeing it
  • 4:13 - 4:17
you'll see a little kind of angle going
    backwards across the neck.
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    That's what you're looking for.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
When it's in the air like that,
now I'm checking it's got the angle,
  • 4:22 - 4:26
then I'm putting the whole chord shape down
    all at the same time.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    It's there, it's hovering,
    and then press it down.
  • 4:28 - 4:35
So that's the first change, A to G.
    Really good one to do.
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    You'll notice here too,
    something else interesting :
  • 4:38 - 4:40
Do you see the thumb there?
  • 4:40 - 4:42
The thumb's hanging around on the top
    and then look,
  • 4:42 - 4:44
it has to disappear for the G chord.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
So what the thumb is doing here
    is muting the thickest string.
  • 4:47 - 4:52
It's kind of a little bit more of an advanced technique
but it's something to be aware of
  • 4:52 - 4:57
as you develop your guitar playing
for both the D chord and A chord,
  • 4:57 - 5:01
the thumb might want to hang over
and just touch ever so slightly.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
But what it does mean is that
when you change to your bar chord
  • 5:04 - 5:07
that the thumb has to shift around the back
  • 5:07 - 5:09
and then it's going to come back over again
    and shift around the back.
  • 5:09 - 5:13
That's part of the skill set
that you're going to be learning here.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
Now the next chord, D chord,
  • 5:17 - 5:23
definitely it's a nice idea to have the thumb there
    muting the thick E string.
  • 5:23 - 5:25
Just because it's the note E
  • 5:25 - 5:29
and E on the D chord
    doesn't really sound very good
  • 5:29 - 5:31
so we definitely don't want that one ringing out
  • 5:31 - 5:33
so thumb can just touch it
    on the top there.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
It is literally just touching it.
If you're not use to this technique,
  • 5:36 - 5:40
it only takes the slightest touch
    to get that note muted.
  • 5:40 - 5:45
So we're going D and then
    we're going to F# minor.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
It's a really nice common chord change.
  • 5:51 - 5:56
Again, forming it, getting the bar at the side,
    putting the shape down.
  • 5:56 - 6:02
If you have to stretch the fingers out in between
to help them kind of reset
  • 6:02 - 6:06
and as soon as you're through
that start to look at the path
  • 6:06 - 6:11
    that they're going to take
to get between each of the chords.
  • 6:11 - 6:15
Next up, we've got a interesting one,
    C to Ab.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
Now, with C, again make sure
you've got your fingers at a nice angle
  • 6:18 - 6:21
and that they're not like this.
if they're too square on the frets,
  • 6:21 - 6:24
you'll find that you'll be stretching
between the 2nd and 3rd fingers.
  • 6:24 - 6:28
So just as a bit of a revision,
make sure the fingers are round like that.
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    When I'm looking at a C chord,
I'm kind of looking down my fingers.
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    My eye line is looking
    straight down my fingers.
  • 6:34 - 6:37
If I can see the whole of my finger
    like a little arch,
  • 6:37 - 6:39
then I know that they're not in the right place.
  • 6:39 - 6:46
So, fingers at a nice angle there for the C chord
and now we're going to an A flat chord.
  • 6:47 - 6:48
    Which is an interesting one
  • 6:48 - 6:51
because now we've got our fingers
    in a completely different shape,
  • 6:51 - 6:53
we've got to slide them up
and there's the chord, put them down.
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    It's just practice.
  • 7:00 - 7:03
And you're just trying to get
  • 7:03 - 7:07
See the shape is already there
and then you're putting it down.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    Doing it really slowly
    and really just thinking
  • 7:09 - 7:13
about trying to get it in a nice shape
    before you put it down.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    That's the aim here,
    that's what you're looking for.
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    And we've got G to G flat.
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    G, I don't mind really,
you can do the 2 finger G,
  • 7:21 - 7:24
you can even do the folk G
if you want without you're first finger.
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    It doesn't really matter,
  • 7:25 - 7:31
pick one and practice doing that chord
and then to G flat major.
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    G
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    G flat major.
  • 7:35 - 7:38
Now can you see how the shape,
    there it is?
  • 7:38 - 7:40
That's it, the chord shape is there.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
    You can't see it
but that's like an inch off the neck.
  • 7:46 - 7:50
Trying to get that chord shape formed in the air
    before we get there.
  • 7:50 - 7:54
Lastly, we've got E to F sharp minor.
  • 7:56 - 8:01
Very, very common chord sequence this one.
And it's just forming the chord.
  • 8:01 - 8:05
    There's the chord again.
    We're just working the chord.
  • 8:05 - 8:08
From one shape to the next.
  • 8:09 - 8:12
And back again. Trying to form.
    There's the chord shape.
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    You should be all right
with the open chords already, right?
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    You've done air changes,
  • 8:16 - 8:19
you're used to putting the grip down
    all at once
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    so now it's really concentrating.
  • 8:21 - 8:25
There we go, look! 3rd and 4th finger
are kind of locked together there.
  • 8:25 - 8:30
    They're ready, they're in preparation
    for that chord change.
  • 8:30 - 8:31
    That's the trick.
  • 8:32 - 8:36
    Well, that's the one-minute changes
for the foundation two practice routine.
  • 8:36 - 8:41
It's really, really important that you get used
to forming these bar chords in the air
  • 8:41 - 8:44
    before you put them down.
Unless you get that skill right,
  • 8:44 - 8:47
you will never get your chord changes
between open chords and bar chords
  • 8:47 - 8:51
or bar chords and other bar chords
    smooth and comfortable.
  • 8:51 - 8:52
They'll always feel a bit jerky,
  • 8:52 - 8:56
it'll always be putting the bar down,
rolling it back, putting the shape down.
  • 8:56 - 8:59
It's really difficult to get the changes
    fast enough
  • 8:59 - 9:01
to put them into a song
if you're doing it that way.
  • 9:01 - 9:04
So really try and focus now on this,
  • 9:04 - 9:08
shifting the shape in the air
    between the chord changes.
  • 9:08 - 9:11
It's quite a big deal, really important.
    Not that difficult.
  • 9:11 - 9:14
It's just practice. Like everything else on the instrument,
    it's just practice.
  • 9:14 - 9:19
You'll be cool. Practice hard and I'll see you
for another lesson some time really soon.
  • 9:19 - 9:23
    Bye bye!
