No Digital Facelifts: Thinking the Unthinkable About Open Educational Experiences

  • 0:04 - 0:06
    For the session this afternoon
  • 0:06 - 0:06
    I have the distinct pleasure
  • 0:06 - 0:07
To introduce two of my good friends
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    Gardner Campbell, from Baylor University
  • 0:09 - 0:12
and Jim Groom from the University of Mary Washington.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
They require absolutely no introduction beyond that.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
That's why we'll let them get on with the show, so
  • 0:19 - 0:25
please help me welcome these two guys
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    Thank you, Cole
  • 0:26 - 0:28
Thanks everybody for being here after lunch
  • 0:28 - 0:30
This is always the great deadly zone
  • 0:30 - 0:32
where your blood sugar and my blood sugar
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    the biochemistry, the neurons
  • 0:34 - 0:36
but we're going to force through this
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    we're going to make it
  • 0:38 - 0:40
I have a good feeling about this
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    every presentation I've been in
  • 0:44 - 0:46
has something very striking in it for me
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    sometimes it has been ideas
  • 0:47 - 0:50
sometimes it's the level of innovation
  • 0:50 - 0:52
just the sheer energy of innovation
  • 0:52 - 0:57
sometimes it's a little more close to the bone
  • 0:57 - 0:59
the session that Leigh Blackall did
  • 0:59 - 1:00
I don't know if he's in here now
  • 1:00 - 1:03
but the session he did before lunch
  • 1:03 - 1:06
really struck me with the sense of frustration
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    that I feel...a lot...maybe you do...
  • 1:09 - 1:13
that we live in an age of marvels and wonders
  • 1:13 - 1:14
that don't seem to be making
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    a substantial difference
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    in the most serious activities
  • 1:18 - 1:19
we engage in as human beings:
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    Education
  • 1:21 - 1:24
There are a lot of reasons why that's no-one's fault
  • 1:24 - 1:26
There are a lot of reasons why that's everyone's fault
  • 1:26 - 1:29
and there's a lot of people
  • 1:29 - 1:30
we can point at and blame
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    sometimes justifiably so
  • 1:32 - 1:35
but rather than round up the usual suspects
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    I have this sense of
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    What a waste!
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    Why is this not happening?
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    We've had the Internet
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    We've had computers
  • 1:43 - 1:46
We've had all these amazing conversations
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    at conferences like this
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    about the possibilities
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    Is this making a difference?
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    I mean we can say:
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    Sure, we have success stories
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    but we keep thinking
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    when does the tide turn?
  • 1:56 - 1:58
when do we get to the place
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    where we can say
  • 1:59 - 2:05
    Yeah, we're on the upswing
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    Clay Shirky in 2008 wrote:
  • 2:09 - 2:10
" We are living in the middle of
  • 2:10 - 2:13
the largest increase in expressive capability
  • 2:13 - 2:15
in the history of the human race."
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    I think that's true
  • 2:18 - 2:20
except that probably we're at the beginning
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    and not the middle.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
But this increase in expressive capability
  • 2:25 - 2:27
and the history of the human race
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    ought to be the abiding
  • 2:29 - 2:35
    transforming concern of all education.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    Higher Education is the place
  • 2:37 - 2:40
where we train people to be able
  • 2:40 - 2:42
to take advantage of this to the fullest
  • 2:42 - 2:44
and surprise us with things we have not discovered
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    about what this can mean
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    but whatever it means
  • 2:48 - 2:50
we may disagree about what it means
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    Look at that!
  • 2:51 - 2:53
I believe that that is true
  • 2:53 - 2:56
It makes me do what I do
  • 2:56 - 2:58
and yet it is as if
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    day after day
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    I sa: " I have a bag of gold.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
Would you like a bag of gold?"
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    and people say:
  • 3:04 - 3:09
"Where do you find time for bags of gold?"
  • 3:09 - 3:13
"Oh, no ..another currency to master."
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    "Gold, is that sustainable?"
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    Like: "No, you spend it..."
  • 3:18 - 3:19
Well..."What would you spend it on?"
  • 3:19 - 3:20
"What would you like to spend it on?"
  • 3:20 - 3:26
"I don't have time for your philosophical questions, Gardner".
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    It's a bag of gold
  • 3:27 - 3:29
What part of that do you not understand?
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    I love this
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    This is the Cortex A9,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
a chip that is in production,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
and I'm afraid that the audio here
  • 3:39 - 3:40
is not going to be sufficiently loud
  • 3:40 - 3:42
so I'll just tell you what Adrian Cockcroft says
  • 3:42 - 3:44
but if you really wanna to get the full spooky ride
  • 3:44 - 3:47
go to the IT conversations podcast.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
Have any of you heard him talk about Millicomputing?
  • 3:50 - 3:52
He defines millicomputing as a computer
  • 3:52 - 3:54
that consumes less than one watt
  • 3:54 - 3:55
and it'll fit in your pocket
  • 3:55 - 3:58
and it will not burn your leg
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    This chip is in production
  • 4:01 - 4:02
It will appear in devices probably the next year or so.
  • 4:02 - 4:05
It has four graphical processing units
  • 4:05 - 4:08
each of which independently can process
  • 4:08 - 4:11
a full H.264 high definition stream
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    and coding, decoding
  • 4:13 - 4:16
He talks about the way we're not going to carry
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    computers in our pockets.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
We're going to carry web servers
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    in our pockets
  • 4:22 - 4:24
we're going to walk in to a context
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    and wirelessly link-up
  • 4:26 - 4:28
with the things we want to do in that context.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    There's usually where I stop
  • 4:30 - 4:32
when I play this for faculty
  • 4:32 - 4:35
because the next part is even spookier
  • 4:35 - 4:37
in which he talks about the way these milling computers
  • 4:37 - 4:40
will allow us to be in constant contact
  • 4:40 - 4:44
with a society of avatars and a virtual world
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    who will be able to,
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    because of our wearable computing,
  • 4:47 - 4:48
to tap us on the shoulder
  • 4:48 - 4:50
and have a conversation with us
  • 4:50 - 4:51
while we are here in real space as well.
  • 4:51 - 4:56
Now to me that can be a real bag of gold
  • 4:56 - 4:58
or maybe we don't have time to
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    amplify our beings that way
  • 4:59 - 5:02
I'm not going to say this is going to be easy
  • 5:02 - 5:04
or that's not going to have problems
  • 5:04 - 5:06
or be fraught or spun a whole new wave of
  • 5:06 - 5:13
    milling cyber computing crime.
  • 5:13 - 5:15
But if it's going to happen
  • 5:15 - 5:16
and there are great possibilities it will
  • 5:16 - 5:18
why doesn't it make a difference?
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    why hasn't that made people
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    stop and say
  • 5:22 - 5:23
I guess I could recapture a sense of wonder
  • 5:23 - 5:29
    under these circumstances
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    What do we believe?
  • 5:31 - 5:34
"Today's technologies and their consequent environments
  • 5:34 - 5:35
    succeed each other so rapidly
  • 5:35 - 5:38
that one environment makes us aware of the next.
  • 5:38 - 5:42
Technologies begin to perform the function of art
  • 5:42 - 5:44
in making us aware of the psychic
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    and social consequences of technology...
  • 5:46 - 5:49
We are entering the new age of education
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    that is programmed for discovery
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    rather than instruction."
  • 5:53 - 5:57
We could, especially if we were an English faculty,
  • 5:57 - 6:00
    wordsmith this
  • 6:00 - 6:01
    tinker with it
  • 6:01 - 6:04
if this were a faculty senate, it would not get out of committee.
  • 6:04 - 6:08
Probably we all believe some variety of that
  • 6:08 - 6:13
    some version of that
  • 6:13 - 6:14
or to put it another way from the Renaissance,
  • 6:14 - 6:16
which is my favourite place to hang out
  • 6:16 - 6:18
in the virtual space in my head
  • 6:18 - 6:21
it's like the Music of the Spheres
  • 6:21 - 6:23
in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice
  • 6:23 - 6:25
the young Lorenzo woos his sweetheart
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    with talk of the stars
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    Is that scalable?
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    Well, never mind.
  • 6:34 - 6:36
"There's not the smallest orb which thou behold'st
  • 6:36 - 6:39
But in his motion like an angel sings,
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    Still quiring to the young-eyed cherubins;
  • 6:42 - 6:44
Such harmony is in immortal souls,
  • 6:44 - 6:48
But whilst this muddy vesture of decay
  • 6:48 - 6:51
Doth grossly close it in, we cannot hear it."
  • 6:51 - 6:54
Melvyn Bragg , In Our Time,
  • 6:54 - 6:55
in the episode of Music of the Spheres
  • 6:55 -
"This is the music of the spheres
  • Not Synced
the idea that the stars and planets
  • Not Synced
    as they travel through space
  • Not Synced
    make beautiful music together
  • Not Synced
    The Music of the Spheres
  • Not Synced
played out of the classical world
  • Not Synced
    to the Medieval period
  • Not Synced
    and into the Renaissance
  • Not Synced
it affords us a glimpse into minds
  • Not Synced
    for whom the Universe
  • Not Synced
    was full of meaning
  • Not Synced
    of strange correspondences
  • Not Synced
    and grand harmonies
  • Not Synced
    I would like to graduate
  • Not Synced
    a generation of students
  • Not Synced
    who will help ME here
  • Not Synced
to strange correspondences and grand harmonies
  • Not Synced
that I have not yet imagined
  • Not Synced
that's what I'm in it for
  • Not Synced
    But oh well,
  • Not Synced
how you are going to protect privacy?
  • Not Synced
This is a time of wonders
  • Not Synced
Usually the printing press is introduced as an example
  • Not Synced
    of a disruptive technology
  • Not Synced
on the order of what we're seeing now.
  • Not Synced
    No small disruption
  • Not Synced
    The printing press started wars
  • Not Synced
    overturned religious orthodoxy
  • Not Synced
The printing press meant that any fool
  • Not Synced
    with a piece of machinery
  • Not Synced
    could say anything
  • Not Synced
    and how would you know?
  • Not Synced
Well, I think that the disruption is on a bigger scale
  • Not Synced
I think that the disruption we're witnessing today
  • Not Synced
is the disruption on the scale
  • Not Synced
of the development of the written alphabet
  • Not Synced
    of the phonetic alphabet
  • Not Synced
    This was a huge deal
  • Not Synced
This was a technology invented to communicate
  • Not Synced
    with the Dead
  • Not Synced
so it's not like a tool
  • Not Synced
    it's a meta tool
  • Not Synced
    it's an alphabet
  • Not Synced
What will I say with that?
  • Not Synced
What do you want to say?
  • Not Synced
    I don't know...
  • Not Synced
just tell me what you want me to write
  • Not Synced
    It's a great book
  • Not Synced
Marianne Wolf, Proust and the Squid.
  • Not Synced
She talks about the science of the reading brain.
  • Not Synced
the fact that learning to read
  • Not Synced
    is something we do deliberately
  • Not Synced
    to re-arrange our minds
  • Not Synced
    We make new connections
  • Not Synced
among the various perceptual centers in our brains
  • Not Synced
that are not programmed in there
  • Not Synced
we seem to have a speech center
  • Not Synced
as part of our revolved neuro anathomy
  • Not Synced
    but not a reading center
  • Not Synced
we have to do things that do not happen naturally
  • Not Synced
but once we do those things
  • Not Synced
    we find...
  • Not Synced
    a bag of gold
  • Not Synced
Clay Shirky wrote a blog post
  • Not Synced
that really rocked me back on my heels
  • Not Synced
back in March, on Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable
  • Not Synced
did anyone of you see that blog post?
  • Not Synced
Yeah..he talks about the ways in which newspapers
  • Not Synced
essentially played Nearer my God to thee in the Titanic
  • Not Synced
and they thought they could nibble at the edges
  • Not Synced
    because nibbling at the edges
  • Not Synced
well, you know you don't have to take a big bite
  • Not Synced
you don't have to worry of indigestion
  • Not Synced
you don't have to worry about anything
  • Not Synced
you just take a little nibble
  • Not Synced
well, newspapers were nibbling at the edges
  • Not Synced
    in the 1990's
  • Not Synced
they stopped being a viable business model
  • Not Synced
    this is Shirky's argument
  • Not Synced
his argument is not that journalism will go away
  • Not Synced
but that the coincidence of journalism and newspapers
  • Not Synced
    was historically conditioned
  • Not Synced
    and can go away historically
  • Not Synced
    but the newspaper folks
  • Not Synced
like the professors, maybe like the edtech folks
  • Not Synced
maybe like any of us in the room
  • Not Synced
tend to believe that we're in the domain
  • Not Synced
because we're in the best of all possible domains
  • Not Synced
this is the way it has to be
  • Not Synced
    not so much
  • Not Synced
    and Shirky coined the term
  • Not Synced
which really scared me to death
  • Not Synced
    "the digital facelift"
  • Not Synced
for what newspapers try to do
  • Not Synced
we'll just do what we did before
  • Not Synced
but we'll put it on the web
  • Not Synced
but it'll be what we had before
  • Not Synced
    we'll have some hyperlinks
  • Not Synced
but it'll be what we did before, etc...
  • Not Synced
    "The Digital Facelift"
  • Not Synced
    Can that stand up against
  • Not Synced
    these items of belief?
  • Not Synced
"As the means of input increase,
  • Not Synced
so does the need for insight or pattern recognition
  • Not Synced
    your mileage may vary
  • Not Synced
    I think that's true
  • Not Synced
    The school drop-out situation
  • Not Synced
    will get very much worse
  • Not Synced
    because of the frustration
  • Not Synced
of the student need for participation
  • Not Synced
    in the learning process
  • Not Synced
which is not a new need
  • Not Synced
    but it's a need
  • Not Synced
that had to take some pretty distorted forms
  • Not Synced
    during the industrial age
  • Not Synced
as we tried to figure out scaling
  • Not Synced
    and sustainability
  • Not Synced
we did the best we could
  • Not Synced
but if we find that maybe
  • Not Synced
that's not the way to go forward
  • Not Synced
    change has to happen
  • Not Synced
    but it's not happening yet
  • Not Synced
instead we're getting the digital facelift
  • Not Synced
Now, I have to tell you first of all
  • Not Synced
    this is from Brazil,
  • Not Synced
    a film by Terry Gillian,
  • Not Synced
which I saw for the first time
  • Not Synced
    when it came out
  • Not Synced
    and I saw again it
  • Not Synced
it's probably ten or so years since I've seen it
  • Not Synced
    but under the intoxicating effect
  • Not Synced
    of the Reverend
  • Not Synced
I knew I would have to make a pilgrimage to see Brazil again.
  • Not Synced
and I found that it told the story
  • Not Synced
of my life today, maybe yours
  • Not Synced
    Here's the thing that I didn't remember
  • Not Synced
    about this scene
  • Not Synced
    She is loving this experience
  • Not Synced
    To us it looks grotesque
  • Not Synced
    to her...well..she's getting off
  • Not Synced
    She has multiple opportunities
  • Not Synced
    to continue to examine
  • Not Synced
    her increasingly grotesque self
  • Not Synced
in the pursuit of an illusion
  • Not Synced
and she's deriving intense pleasure from it
  • Not Synced
    because see how it's framed
  • Not Synced
    this is great!
  • Not Synced
What I'm doing to you is
  • Not Synced
I stretch your features out of recognition is great
  • Not Synced
in this digital facelift you look marvelous
  • Not Synced
You can't see it because of the light
  • Not Synced
    but he's got these clips
  • Not Synced
he's holding her face back with
  • Not Synced
this is where she really gets excited
  • Not Synced
and finally to make sure it stays the way it should
  • Not Synced
he puts surround wrap around it.
  • Not Synced
I assure you there are no further problems
  • Not Synced
    that digital facelift.
  • Not Synced
    Problem solved
  • Not Synced
    or perhaps the digital facelift
  • Not Synced
is like this poor lady in Brazil
  • Not Synced
who has immense faith in her doctor
  • Not Synced
    who is a maverick
  • Not Synced
    He's an innovator
  • Not Synced
He doesn't go along with the flow
  • Not Synced
He has a special chemical process.
  • Not Synced
Now it's taking a little while
  • Not Synced
as she is very delicately skinned
  • Not Synced
so her results are not coming out exactly
  • Not Synced
    the way she had imagined
  • Not Synced
    Notice the lovely seepage
  • Not Synced
    around the bandages
  • Not Synced
    the eye V
  • Not Synced
the fact that she is now in a wheel chair
  • Not Synced
    and blind apparently
  • Not Synced
some kind of support for her chin
  • Not Synced
she's not in very good shape
  • Not Synced
    but she's hanging in
  • Not Synced
    she's a believer
  • Not Synced
maybe she's got the wrong guru
  • Not Synced
because eventually this is what happens
  • Not Synced
    with her digital facelift
  • Not Synced
they have a memorial service for her
  • Not Synced
    it's a relatively gruesome affair
  • Not Synced
    because that's what's happened
  • Not Synced
    in the end
  • Not Synced
    it's just coming apart
  • Not Synced
    it's a nightmare
  • Not Synced
I'm not saying that the LMS will necessarily
  • Not Synced
    get us to this
  • Not Synced
    I'm just saying
  • Not Synced
So what do we do instead of having digital facelifts?
  • Not Synced
    I propose three recursive practices
  • Not Synced
These practices feed on each other
  • Not Synced
They're what we do in education anyway
  • Not Synced
    but they can amplified
  • Not Synced
    by information and communication technologies.
  • Not Synced
    One is narrating
  • Not Synced
    having the students
  • Not Synced
    having the teachers
  • Not Synced
    that's the real trouble
  • Not Synced
    thinking aloud
  • Not Synced
    willing to tell the story
  • Not Synced
of the process of the learning
  • Not Synced
    of the investigation
  • Not Synced
    you could call it blogging
  • Not Synced
    Curating
  • Not Synced
how do you take care of your stuff
  • Not Synced
    not to protect it
  • Not Synced
not to even make sure you can transcode it
  • Not Synced
    those things are important
  • Not Synced
but how do you arrange it
  • Not Synced
for the people who will come to see it?
  • Not Synced
for yourself as you contemplate it
  • Not Synced
    Now as scholars
  • Not Synced
we're pretty used to the idea of curation
  • Not Synced
and this has to do with dissertations
  • Not Synced
and scholarly articles and so forth
  • Not Synced
Many students in my opinion come to college
  • Not Synced
believing they have nothing to curate
  • Not Synced
and they will generate nothing to curate
  • Not Synced
    during their time in school.
  • Not Synced
    They'll have transactional exchanges
  • Not Synced
with professors who mark their work
  • Not Synced
and those pieces of paper get put in a box
  • Not Synced
    I'd like students to think
  • Not Synced
that they began their life's work
  • Not Synced
    when they come to school
  • Not Synced
    and finally sharing
  • Not Synced
Now that I have done it
  • Not Synced
    Now that I've arranged it
  • Not Synced
Now that I've thought about it
  • Not Synced
I'm going to put it out there
  • Not Synced
because it may be valuable to someone
  • Not Synced
because I may find the unmet friend
  • Not Synced
    because as it was said
  • Not Synced
so memorably by John Todd in his presentation
  • Not Synced
"Meaning happens when the two people connect"
  • Not Synced
    Very important
  • Not Synced
Much of the way education is set up
  • Not Synced
    militates against each of these
  • Not Synced
let alone all of them together
  • Not Synced
    and yet we all know
  • Not Synced
that one of the great things
  • Not Synced
about the technologies that we use
  • Not Synced
    these information and communication technologies
  • Not Synced
is that they not only allow these things
  • Not Synced
they amplify them, they augment them
  • Not Synced
they turn them up to eleven
  • Not Synced
    they make that feedback happen
  • Not Synced
and when I try to explain this to my students
  • Not Synced
I inevitably go to Jimmy Hendrix
  • Not Synced
    playing the Star Spangled Banner
  • Not Synced
    at Woodstock
  • Not Synced
and they say: "Why are you showing us this?"
  • Not Synced
    and I say:
  • Not Synced
Because he knows how to control feedback
  • Not Synced
He knows how to play feedback
  • Not Synced
and that's what you need to know
  • Not Synced
    The effects that get unleashed
  • Not Synced
    in this recursive practice
  • Not Synced
    I think are most powerful
  • Not Synced
    on the open web
  • Not Synced
    using Web 2.0 affordances
  • Not Synced
or whatever the web is going to be
  • Not Synced
    as it goes forward
  • Not Synced
because the Web is not just a platform
  • Not Synced
    for these things
  • Not Synced
it is the natural outgrowth of our desire
  • Not Synced
    for these things
  • Not Synced
That makes the web itself recursive
  • Not Synced
And students have an intimation of that
  • Not Synced
    you know,
  • Not Synced
they have a feeling about that
  • Not Synced
from their own use of social media
  • Not Synced
    but they think that's somehow
  • Not Synced
    I don't know
  • Not Synced
    that couldn't be right
  • Not Synced
and they get to college and they find
  • Not Synced
that no, that really isn't right
  • Not Synced
we have a template for you, young man
  • Not Synced
but I think their intimations are correct
  • Not Synced
    so what's the answer
  • Not Synced
    I don't have it
  • Not Synced
    however, here's a framework
  • Not Synced
    for thinking about what...
  • Not Synced
this is what I use when I try to dream
  • Not Synced
    as big as I can
  • Not Synced
    I try to think about
  • Not Synced
    helping students understand cyberinfrastructure
  • Not Synced
and how to build one for themselves
  • Not Synced
to be able to be architects of their own digital lives
  • Not Synced
which will mean as we go forward
  • Not Synced
that they need to be worrying about
  • Not Synced
    the things we worry about
  • Not Synced
    but productively together
  • Not Synced
    narrating, curating, sharing
  • Not Synced
This is a definition of cyberinfrastructure
  • Not Synced
from the American Council of Learned Societies
  • Not Synced
    in their report on cyberinfrastructure
  • Not Synced
    called "Our Cultural Commonwealth"
  • Not Synced
    Cyberinfrastructure is something more specific
  • Not Synced
    than the network itself,
  • Not Synced
but it is something more general than a tool
  • Not Synced
or a resource developed for a particular project,
  • Not Synced
a range of projects, or, even more broadly,
  • Not Synced
    for a particular discipline."
  • Not Synced
    That's the sweet spot
  • Not Synced
    It's not just the network
  • Not Synced
    it's more specific than that
  • Not Synced
    yet it's not so specific
  • Not Synced
that it's simply the tool you use
  • Not Synced
for a particular project or a domain
  • Not Synced
    Something like an alphabet
  • Not Synced
Anybody here play Little Big Planet?
  • Not Synced
Little Big Planet people raise your hands.
  • Not Synced
    OK, good
  • Not Synced
Little Big Planet people grab into the little sponge
  • Not Synced
Little Big Planet is a game done
  • Not Synced
    by a company called Mollecule
  • Not Synced
    for the Sony Playstation 3
  • Not Synced
    So it's commercial
  • Not Synced
    it's proprietary, etc...
  • Not Synced
That said, Little Big Planet is not the only game
  • Not Synced
to build authoring tools into the game
  • Not Synced
but it's one of the most conspicuously successful
  • Not Synced
    at doing this
  • Not Synced
so when you buy Little Big Planet
  • Not Synced
    you buy the game
  • Not Synced
    and within the game
  • Not Synced
the tools to make more levels for that game
  • Not Synced
    in other words
  • Not Synced
you're able to be within that environment
  • Not Synced
    and be both a participant
  • Not Synced
and a producer if you choose to be
  • Not Synced
when you make the new levels
  • Not Synced
    you can upload them
  • Not Synced
    to the media Mollecule server
  • Not Synced
    Oh yes,
  • Not Synced
they're getting great business advantage from this
  • Not Synced
but look at the way they're framing it.
  • Not Synced
You upload it to the server
  • Not Synced
then people can find you by author's name
  • Not Synced
they can find you by ranking
  • Not Synced
    you can tag them
  • Not Synced
ingenious, fun, creepy, boring, brilliant, wow
  • Not Synced
    right?
  • Not Synced
you can favourite the ones you like best
  • Not Synced
in about a year and a half
  • Not Synced
    one million levels
  • Not Synced
    have been uploaded
  • Not Synced
to the Little Big Planet server
  • Not Synced
    at Media Mollecule
  • Not Synced
    one million
  • Not Synced
let's say that the Theodore Sturgeon's Law is true
  • Not Synced
    90%of them are piffle
  • Not Synced
    there are still 100.000
  • Not Synced
and because my son is very patient with me
  • Not Synced
    as a learner
  • Not Synced
    though I am slow
  • Not Synced
the bonds of love mean that
  • Not Synced
he's going to be there for me
  • Not Synced
    he has taken me through
  • Not Synced
    some of these user-generated levels
  • Not Synced
    and you know
  • Not Synced
    they're really diverse
  • Not Synced
    and they're really cool
  • Not Synced
    and they're really interesting
  • Not Synced
they're examples of an outpouring of creativity
  • Not Synced
in what James Gee calls "the producerly mode"
  • Not Synced
in a subdomain of a larger domain
  • Not Synced
you could call it undergraduate research
  • Not Synced
you could call it service learning
  • Not Synced
you could call it situated cognition
  • Not Synced
you can call it any number of things
  • Not Synced
    it's cool
  • Not Synced
    it's fun
  • Not Synced
    it's work
  • Not Synced
    it involves the whole person
  • Not Synced
    there's gotta be a way
  • Not Synced
that we can make it happen in education
  • Not Synced
    more consistently than it does
  • Not Synced
or at least to think about it in these terms
  • Not Synced
    so kids don't lose hope
  • Not Synced
    Here's a Little Big Planet
  • Not Synced
    It's the graphical user interface
  • Not Synced
    called cPannel
  • Not Synced
    for the hosting service
  • Not Synced
    at Bluehost
  • Not Synced
which is where I've got my stuff
  • Not Synced
    and my stuff is there
  • Not Synced
I have backups of my stuff
  • Not Synced
    you know, I trust no-one
  • Not Synced
    be a little skeptical
  • Not Synced
    and yet I'm committed
  • Not Synced
Here are the things I can do with
  • Not Synced
    the graphical user interface
  • Not Synced
at the level of systems administrator
  • Not Synced
    or someone who plays one
  • Not Synced
    through a GUI
  • Not Synced
Here are the things that I need to think about
  • Not Synced
    Now look at this
  • Not Synced
this allows me to be producerly at the level of the server
  • Not Synced
    for my own digital life.
  • Not Synced
    There's a getting started wizard
  • Not Synced
    okay that's fine
  • Not Synced
I need to know about changing passwords
  • Not Synced
I know sometimes my students think about
  • Not Synced
    changing languages
  • Not Synced
that would be really cool, etcetera
  • Not Synced
    email, managing your own email
  • Not Synced
you can have a thousand, two thousand email boxes in here
  • Not Synced
    your file system
  • Not Synced
they've got to know about that
  • Not Synced
these are not terribly difficult things
  • Not Synced
    but they are important
  • Not Synced
    and taken as a system
  • Not Synced
    they become more important
  • Not Synced
I like my students to have a digital presence
  • Not Synced
where they can track who comes to see them
  • Not Synced
it's an important part of the narrating, curating and sharing
  • Not Synced
and it can all be automated of course
  • Not Synced
and you've got a choice among several
  • Not Synced
security - we'd want our students to think about that, right?
  • Not Synced
but I'd want them to think about it as digital citizens
  • Not Synced
    architects of their own cyberspace
  • Not Synced
not as people who have to find the website
  • Not Synced
that tells them what safe computing is all about
  • Not Synced
    at our school
  • Not Synced
    That should go without saying
  • Not Synced
because they're thinking about this already
  • Not Synced
They're going to have multiple domains
  • Not Synced
    or they should.
  • Not Synced
    Data?
  • Not Synced
    Data Literacy is vital
  • Not Synced
Can they have a nodding acquaintance with databases?
  • Not Synced
    Sure
  • Not Synced
and then the software down here
  • Not Synced
    this is kind of interesting
  • Not Synced
    software and services
  • Not Synced
one click: which blogging platform would you like?
  • Not Synced
    try out several
  • Not Synced
    groupware, livechat, utilities, content management,
  • Not Synced
    client management
  • Not Synced
do we have to do all of those?
  • Not Synced
    No
  • Not Synced
Do they have to read all the books in the library?
  • Not Synced
    No
  • Not Synced
Do they have to take all the courses in the catalogue?
  • Not Synced
    No
  • Not Synced
Why do we have more there?
  • Not Synced
    To amplify the possibilities
  • Not Synced
To give them some room to roam
  • Not Synced
    Some room for discovery
  • Not Synced
    A place to play
  • Not Synced
I mean, those of you who've heard
  • Not Synced
either Jim or me or Martha Burgess talk about
  • Not Synced
    The Bluehost Experiment
  • Not Synced
    in Washington
  • Not Synced
where we essentially let the staff loose in this environment
  • Not Synced
This is the next step for that
  • Not Synced
    in my Little Big Planet
  • Not Synced
put the students in this kind of sandbox
  • Not Synced
let them play, let them innovate, let them discover
  • Not Synced
what if you give it to 4000 students
  • Not Synced
and there are only 100 works of staggering genius emerging
  • Not Synced
oh well, that would be ok
  • Not Synced
    more scripts, e-commerce
  • Not Synced
    marketing, photo galleries
  • Not Synced
    webmails, website builders
  • Not Synced
    a couple of wikis
  • Not Synced
and you can get in there and install your own
  • Not Synced
they don't have a one click install for me wiki
  • Not Synced
which is a regrettable omission but
  • Not Synced
    you can get in there
  • Not Synced
    that's pretty outlandish
  • Not Synced
when we were South by Southwest
  • Not Synced
somebody very some high I'd say
  • Not Synced
at the end of the presentation said:
  • Not Synced
Are you saying that our students
  • Not Synced
    need to be system administrators?
  • Not Synced
    and I thought about it
  • Not Synced
    and my first impulse was:
  • Not Synced
Oh No, not at all..that would be extreme
  • Not Synced
and than I thought twice and said
  • Not Synced
Yes, actually that is what I want them to be
  • Not Synced
    system administrators
  • Not Synced
if it is easy enough to do
  • Not Synced
which the graphical front makes it
  • Not Synced
    and if system is understood
  • Not Synced
not just as a particular installation
  • Not Synced
but as a metaphor for their digital lives
  • Not Synced
they'll have to be system administrators
  • Not Synced
    for their digital lives
  • Not Synced
what are they going to do when they graduate?
  • Not Synced
what are they going to do when
  • Not Synced
    they're raising children?
  • Not Synced
None of this is going to roll back as we move forward
  • Not Synced
    Every book will be digitized
  • Not Synced
    Every journal will be digitized
  • Not Synced
    That's a good thing potentially
  • Not Synced
but only if people are able to think about this
  • Not Synced
    in this personal way
  • Not Synced
"When radar was new it was found necessary
  • Not Synced
to eliminate the balloon system for city protection
  • Not Synced
    that had preceded the radar.
  • Not Synced
The balloons got in the way of the electric feedback
  • Not Synced
    of the new radar information.
  • Not Synced
    Do you get that?
  • Not Synced
    The advanced defensive capability
  • Not Synced
was stymied by the old defensive capability
  • Not Synced
Such may well prove to be the case with much
  • Not Synced
    of our existing school curriculum...
  • Not Synced
    I think that's true
  • Not Synced
Let's talk about openess a little bit
  • Not Synced
What does it mean to be open?
  • Not Synced
When we talk about openess we usually think
  • Not Synced
to be open to the world
  • Not Synced
    Everyboy can see it
  • Not Synced
That's where you're going to be exposed to
  • Not Synced
    the most massive network effects
  • Not Synced
    So I like this, obviously
  • Not Synced
I think a lot of us here do
  • Not Synced
    although there have been
  • Not Synced
some really good interrogations of the idea
  • Not Synced
but there are other levels of openness as well
  • Not Synced
or to put it another way
  • Not Synced
places that are closed where we can't see
  • Not Synced
    the things are closed
  • Not Synced
What about being open to each other in a learning community?
  • Not Synced
What about the teacher to the learner?
  • Not Synced
and the learners open to each other?
  • Not Synced
To what extent does the Blackboard discussion forum
  • Not Synced
make the participants actually open to each other
  • Not Synced
    To what extent are learners
  • Not Synced
ready to talk about their vulnerabilities to the teacher
  • Not Synced
and oh, maybe they're not willing to do that
  • Not Synced
because the teacher is not willing
  • Not Synced
to talk about his or her vulnerabilities to the learner
  • Not Synced
    Vulnerabilities are fine
  • Not Synced
That's actually where the learning happens
  • Not Synced
To know as we are known requires identity markers
  • Not Synced
    this is a non-trivial factor
  • Not Synced
Any adult that says this is a trivial factor
  • Not Synced
has forgotten what is was like to decorate a locker
  • Not Synced
or is denying the fact that they actually agonized
  • Not Synced
over the choice of the Welcome mat for their front door
  • Not Synced
    These are non-trivial factors
  • Not Synced
    and finally open to ourselves
  • Not Synced
To what extent do the learning experiences
  • Not Synced
    we co-create or impose
  • Not Synced
open us up to self-awareness or meta-cognition
  • Not Synced
The thing about the personal cyberinfrastructure
  • Not Synced
is that once the students have begun to build it
  • Not Synced
it can then be the object of
  • Not Synced
    narration, curation and sharing itself
  • Not Synced
    at a meta level
  • Not Synced
let's get together and talk about
  • Not Synced
    the cyberinfrastructure you built
  • Not Synced
why did you build it that way?
  • Not Synced
what does that represent about you as a learner?
  • Not Synced
    or as an architect?
  • Not Synced
    what the one I built?
  • Not Synced
    what if we modularize
  • Not Synced
and start swapping it among ourselves?
  • Not Synced
    like levels of a game.
  • Not Synced
where we can rank the efficacy of the various modules
  • Not Synced
we built on our own and together
  • Not Synced
then you learn something about yourself
  • Not Synced
    that would be ok
  • Not Synced
This is a discussion forum in Blackboard
  • Not Synced
    it looks like email
  • Not Synced
Why does it look like email?
  • Not Synced
    That's a rethorical question.
  • Not Synced
    It's perfectly transactional
  • Not Synced
It moves data from one point to another
  • Not Synced
The trouble is that's not a learning community
  • Not Synced
    Where's the decorated locker?
  • Not Synced
Where's the doodle on the notebook?
  • Not Synced
    Where's the marker of identity?
  • Not Synced
    Well, it's here.
  • Not Synced
    phpbb
  • Not Synced
    one click install
  • Not Synced
    from cPannel
  • Not Synced
Oh, you can have an avatar
  • Not Synced
Oh, you can choose a username
  • Not Synced
Oh you can have a SIG file
  • Not Synced
    a non-trivial marker of identity
  • Not Synced
    it looks nicer
  • Not Synced
oh yeah, this post was Wednesday January 16th 2008
  • Not Synced
January 18th 2008 while the class was going on
  • Not Synced
that forum kept active for about 6 months
  • Not Synced
    after the class was over
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
I set it up but I did not choose the templates
  • Not Synced
    for their expressions of themselves
  • Not Synced
and their identity in that space
  • Not Synced
    there was enough openness
  • Not Synced
that they could decorate their lockers
  • Not Synced
some of the forum belonged to them
  • Not Synced
Well, that was kind of interesting
  • Not Synced
This thread belonged to them too, BTW
  • Not Synced
    but that's another story
  • Not Synced
    What do we believe?
  • Not Synced
"The aspiration of our times for
  • Not Synced
wholeness, empathy and depth of awareness
  • Not Synced
is a natural adjunct of electric technology...
  • Not Synced
The mark of our time is its revulsion
  • Not Synced
    against imposed patterns.
  • Not Synced
We are suddenly eager to have things
  • Not Synced
and people declare their beings totally.
  • Not Synced
There is a deep faith to be found
  • Not Synced
    in this new attitude
  • Not Synced
    - a faith that concerns
  • Not Synced
the ultimate harmony of all being."
  • Not Synced
    Strikes you as Utopian?
  • Not Synced
    Strikes you as over-stated?
  • Not Synced
Is it the Music of the Spheres?
  • Not Synced
I think some kind of faith
  • Not Synced
    Something like this underlies education
  • Not Synced
Unless we think we are just training Pavlov's dogs
  • Not Synced
    We want people
  • Not Synced
who will find those strange correspondences
  • Not Synced
    and make them audible
  • Not Synced
to each other and to us
  • Not Synced
Can a personal cyberinfrastructure do it?
  • Not Synced
    I don't know
  • Not Synced
I've never got any chance to try that out
  • Not Synced
    I know what happened
  • Not Synced
when the staff did it at Mary Washington
  • Not Synced
    It was not uniform
  • Not Synced
and the story that doesn't usually get told
  • Not Synced
is that it took 2 1/2 years
  • Not Synced
of kicking, screaming, biting (that's a metaphor)
  • Not Synced
    There was actually some screaming
  • Not Synced
    of people saying:
  • Not Synced
    How many minutes a day
  • Not Synced
do you want me to blog, Gardner?"
  • Not Synced
    I got that, absolutely
  • Not Synced
I had to bite my tongue because
  • Not Synced
    I was about to say
  • Not Synced
You know, I get that questions from my students a lot
  • Not Synced
    but that would've been bad
  • Not Synced
that would've been very, very bad
  • Not Synced
but it's the same idea, it's like
  • Not Synced
Can I turn this into a transaction yet?
  • Not Synced
Can I make this job into just a job of work?
  • Not Synced
and you know, beneath all of that
  • Not Synced
there are all sorts of anxieties
  • Not Synced
    they may be principle resistances
  • Not Synced
there could be a lot of things
  • Not Synced
so there was a long way to get there
  • Not Synced
    but when we got there
  • Not Synced
    well, we got there
  • Not Synced
    and there are five more
  • Not Synced
    sent back
  • Not Synced
    who got there too
  • Not Synced
    Perfect? No
  • Not Synced
    Decisively different? Yeah
  • Not Synced
    So is this our default?
  • Not Synced
    Is this critical thinking?
  • Not Synced
    I don't know
  • Not Synced
We live in a risky, dangerous environment
  • Not Synced
full of people who are trying to manipulate us
  • Not Synced
    and pick our pockets
  • Not Synced
    That's undeniably true
  • Not Synced
It is true that people acting in what they will say
  • Not Synced
    will be your best interest.
  • Not Synced
so hoping that at some point
  • Not Synced
    Stockholm syndrome kicks in
  • Not Synced
you identify with your capturers and go willingly
  • Not Synced
enjoying the digital facelift or whatever it is
  • Not Synced
but this for me can't be the default
  • Not Synced
and part of why it's so exciting
  • Not Synced
for me to be at this conference
  • Not Synced
is that there is another way to think about this
  • Not Synced
there's another way to think about confidence
  • Not Synced
    Maybe narrating, curating and sharing
  • Not Synced
    breeds confidence
  • Not Synced
"Western man acquired from the technology of literacy
  • Not Synced
the power to act without reacting...
  • Not Synced
    Not a bad thing
  • Not Synced
    as the write points out
  • Not Synced
    it's important that the surgeon
  • Not Synced
not be overwhelmed when performing the surgery
  • Not Synced
    In the electric age
  • Not Synced
    when our central nervous system
  • Not Synced
is technologically extended to involve us
  • Not Synced
    in the whole of mankind
  • Not Synced
and to incorporate the whole mankind in us,
  • Not Synced
    (and make that human kind)
  • Not Synced
    we necessarily participate, in depth,
  • Not Synced
in the consequences of our every action
  • Not Synced
    That's what we all fear,
  • Not Synced
its what we all long for, I think.
  • Not Synced
that's somehow even the small things
  • Not Synced
    can be meaningful
  • Not Synced
Anybody who watches a Twitter stream
  • Not Synced
    in, during and on election,
  • Not Synced
    wants to feel this way
  • Not Synced
It is no longer possible to adopt the aloof
  • Not Synced
and dissociated role of the literate Westerner
  • Not Synced
    Overstated? Sure
  • Not Synced
    Extreme? Maybe.
  • Not Synced
Aloof and dissociated role of the literate professor
  • Not Synced
    Westerner?
  • Not Synced
Such is the faith in which this book was written
  • Not Synced
It explores the contours of our own extended beings
  • Not Synced
    and our tecnologies
  • Not Synced
seeking the principle of intelligibility in each of them.
  • Not Synced
For me the idea of the personal cyberinfrastructure
  • Not Synced
is about the search of the principle of intelligibility
  • Not Synced
    in our technologies
  • Not Synced
What the personal infrastructure would be
  • Not Synced
    is a representation.
  • Not Synced
    A creative representation
  • Not Synced
    of that intelligibility
  • Not Synced
maybe of that search as well
  • Not Synced
In the full confidence that it is possible
  • Not Synced
to win an understanding of these forms
  • Not Synced
that will bring them into orderly service
  • Not Synced
    I've looked at them anew
  • Not Synced
accepting very little of the conventional wisdom
  • Not Synced
    concerning them."
  • Not Synced
I'm glad that a Canadian did that.
  • Not Synced
    Aside from Clay Shirky,
  • Not Synced
    the quotations I read
  • Not Synced
    were from Marshall Mc Luhan
  • Not Synced
    in Understanding Media, 1964.
  • Not Synced
I don't know what you knew about Marshall Mc Luhan
  • Not Synced
when you were going through school
  • Not Synced
what I knew about him was
  • Not Synced
how he had a cameo in any hall.
  • Not Synced
I was cheated in my education
  • Not Synced
Along with some genuinely bizarre things
  • Not Synced
    there were genuinelly prophetic things
  • Not Synced
    in this book
  • Not Synced
and I think they aligned very well
  • Not Synced
with some of the sense of urgency
  • Not Synced
and some of the scope of ambition
  • Not Synced
    that we all feel,
  • Not Synced
    that we all share
  • Not Synced
    at a conference like this
  • Not Synced
    The personal cyberinfrastructure
  • Not Synced
may not be the only way to learn this alphabet
  • Not Synced
but I'd like to try sometime.
  • Not Synced
    Jim?
  • Not Synced
Rather than bore you with any of my details
  • Not Synced
let's not lose some of this thread to this
  • Not Synced
does anyone have any questions for Gardner?
  • Not Synced
    Yes, please
  • Not Synced
    So I was wondering
  • Not Synced
some of the examples of software that you
  • Not Synced
that's easily installed that you provided
  • Not Synced
are forums and things like that
  • Not Synced
    if everybody has their own
  • Not Synced
some of these become more useful in agreggate, right?
  • Not Synced
so, have you thought about sort of
  • Not Synced
certain things being sort of you know,
  • Not Synced
individual elements of a presence in cyber insfrastructure
  • Not Synced
others aggregating or working across federation
  • Not Synced
    Excellent question
  • Not Synced
In my dream world the student...
  • Not Synced
    Bryan Alexander is a champion
  • Not Synced
I do not want your bread right now
  • Not Synced
but when you are well again, I'd like it
  • Not Synced
    So the idea would be
  • Not Synced
the student's Baker Club gets together
  • Not Synced
and they talk about how they're going to organize
  • Not Synced
and of course something is going to be online
  • Not Synced
    because it needs to be
  • Not Synced
    because of these affordances
  • Not Synced
    One student says:
  • Not Synced
I could put a phpbb forum
  • Not Synced
    Another student says
  • Not Synced
Yeah, and actually did you know
  • Not Synced
    there was this add on?
  • Not Synced
and then as a group they agree
  • Not Synced
    1) it would be better to have one forum
  • Not Synced
    rather than multiple forums
  • Not Synced
    2) they aggregate their knowledge about
  • Not Synced
what would be the best instance of that
  • Not Synced
    3) they put it together
  • Not Synced
    and by doing that
  • Not Synced
    the lights will go out,
  • Not Synced
    the tables will rise
  • Not Synced
we will join hands and sing
  • Not Synced
    In doing that
  • Not Synced
what they will be doing is discussing
  • Not Synced
a particular scripting affordance on a server
  • Not Synced
but they will be doing it strategically,
  • Not Synced
    in terms of communication needs
  • Not Synced
    and organizational excellence
  • Not Synced
Doing something other than on a surface level
  • Not Synced
That's the one of the way I imagine it , yeah
  • Not Synced
  • Not Synced
    to a certain degree, yeah
  • Not Synced
    in my experience IT departments
  • Not Synced
will not have thought in a sophisticated way
  • Not Synced
about how a blog or a discussion forum differ
  • Not Synced
    rhetorically
  • Not Synced
or how they may be able to shape
  • Not Synced
    student communication
  • Not Synced
and that's okay in a way
  • Not Synced
as long as they don't prescribe the tools
  • Not Synced
    or limit the tools
  • Not Synced
I have an IT department at bluehost.com
  • Not Synced
and they're very good at keeping, you know,
  • Not Synced
things up to date and the backups
  • Not Synced
they're usually very good at that
  • Not Synced
    and so forth
  • Not Synced
    that's their work
  • Not Synced
but what they have done is to provide me affordances
  • Not Synced
    that I can explore
  • Not Synced
so, yeah, I mean I think there is
  • Not Synced
ideally there would be some interest
  • Not Synced
in the rhetorical questions in the IT shop
  • Not Synced
and by building a cyber infrastructure
  • Not Synced
the students would begin to understand
  • Not Synced
something of what goes on mechanically as well
  • Not Synced
there would be a greater opportunity for conversation
  • Not Synced
you know, I think it would be ok
  • Not Synced
if the students made something that broke
  • Not Synced
They would learn from that, I think
  • Not Synced
    I also think that
  • Not Synced
    building on what Gardner said
  • Not Synced
as a response to your question
  • Not Synced
    that the actual cyber infrastructure
  • Not Synced
as posed by an individual, a domain and a space
  • Not Synced
    allows IT departments
  • Not Synced
    to re-imagine this question
  • Not Synced
    of aggregating, syndicating information
  • Not Synced
    as it is happening
  • Not Synced
    around space
  • Not Synced
so it does not mean like
  • Not Synced
the IT department disappears, or somehow the enemy
  • Not Synced
but it allows them to re-imagine this notion of flow
  • Not Synced
and this kind of property of electricity
  • Not Synced
that McLuhan is talking about so beautifully
  • Not Synced
and if we are talking about electricity and flow
  • Not Synced
we're talking about a new property
  • Not Synced
by which we can start to imagine space
  • Not Synced
through the students having their own
  • Not Synced
    and so IT departments
  • Not Synced
should be as much excited about
  • Not Synced
    the possibilities for this
  • Not Synced
rather than ....ing an age old against them
  • Not Synced
    it's not, I mean
  • Not Synced
it's a kind of matter of us working together
  • Not Synced
    to re-imagine the space
  • Not Synced
and I think that's why the immediate call back to that
  • Not Synced
    doesn't capture, I think
  • Not Synced
    what that model sets up
  • Not Synced
as a notion and a mode of aggregation
  • Not Synced
to kind of build into the syndication
  • Not Synced
You have your own cyber infrastructure
  • Not Synced
    and then you re-imagine it
  • Not Synced
and then IT department think about
  • Not Synced
    what that means
  • Not Synced
    right, and
  • Not Synced
okay..how much time do we have?
  • Not Synced
    okay
  • Not Synced
Great talk. I'm reminded of Larry Cuban's book
  • Not Synced
    Teachers and Machines
  • Not Synced
which sort of talks about resistance
  • Not Synced
    that the educational system has
  • Not Synced
    to introductions of technology
  • Not Synced
    and changing actual educational practice
  • Not Synced
wondering if you might comment on
  • Not Synced
    your thoughts about how
  • Not Synced
    the open educational resources movement
  • Not Synced
    might make a difference
  • Not Synced
    in overcoming that structural resistance
  • Not Synced
and well, this kind of loops into the IT question as well
  • Not Synced
it's very easy to paint faculty as stodgy
  • Not Synced
    faculty as vilains
  • Not Synced
    and sometimes it's true
  • Not Synced
and you know it's easy to say that IT is
  • Not Synced
the enemy because they can't think outside the box
  • Not Synced
    sometimes it's true, you know
  • Not Synced
but there are plenty of people in both domains
  • Not Synced
who, if they are able to see compelling examples
  • Not Synced
    of fresh thinking
  • Not Synced
    will say wow..that's cool
  • Not Synced
    I'd like to do that
  • Not Synced
I think that would have addressed
  • Not Synced
what I was thinking about with my students
  • Not Synced
    just last semester
  • Not Synced
that would have gotten me past this point
  • Not Synced
where I wasn't able to get them
  • Not Synced
    to read carefully
  • Not Synced
    before they come to class
  • Not Synced
    but that
  • Not Synced
and this is one of the great sorrows for me
  • Not Synced
    as a faculty member
  • Not Synced
with regard to Learning Management Systems
  • Not Synced
aside from all the other sorrows
  • Not Synced
I can't see what my colleagues are doing
  • Not Synced
and I mean seeing it on the Web
  • Not Synced
so I can look at it carefully
  • Not Synced
and speak to them intelligently about it
  • Not Synced
Why did you design it that way?
  • Not Synced
What did you learn from it?
  • Not Synced
And I think the same thing is true for IT folks
  • Not Synced
when they go to..I've been to some IT conferences
  • Not Synced
and , you know, a lot of times
  • Not Synced
    what they are hearing about
  • Not Synced
    are anecdotes of spectacular catastrophes
  • Not Synced
    or whatever
  • Not Synced
but you're not able to actually...
  • Not Synced
and there may be some good reasons for this
  • Not Synced
    to some extent
  • Not Synced
but they're not able to see
  • Not Synced
    dazzling examples of innovation
  • Not Synced
in a very easy and accessible way
  • Not Synced
so I think that open educational resources
  • Not Synced
is a lot more than about exposing content
  • Not Synced
it's about exposing these compelling examples
  • Not Synced
of other ways to do it
  • Not Synced
it's like being able to see multiple
  • Not Synced
    performances of Shakespeare
  • Not Synced
Oh..never thought of reading the line that way
  • Not Synced
    so the play transforms
  • Not Synced
I don't know if that answers your question
  • Not Synced
    but, yeah...ok
  • Not Synced
So Gardner, is it too late for them to become curators
  • Not Synced
once they get into Higher Education
  • Not Synced
So, you know, cPannel for me
  • Not Synced
I could do that..I'm an IT guy
  • Not Synced
I think I think critically about affordances
  • Not Synced
    but at the same time
  • Not Synced
    is it too late?
  • Not Synced
    I mean..my daughter's eight
  • Not Synced
she has a blog, domain of her own
  • Not Synced
    shouldn't be starting there?
  • Not Synced
we get them for four years here, right?
  • Not Synced
    maybe seven
  • Not Synced
    how do we drop down?
  • Not Synced
somebody said it's too late...too late
  • Not Synced
I mean I don't know what that idea
  • Not Synced
    of what too late means
  • Not Synced
I mean we're always in midias res with this stuff
  • Not Synced
we're always coming into it and imagining it
  • Not Synced
    and Gardner, to refine Gardner,
  • Not Synced
in that whole of the IT is like
  • Not Synced
so many people that I have talked about it
  • Not Synced
and inspired back are right here at UBC
  • Not Synced
Andrew who is coming from an IT perspective
  • Not Synced
was just blowing my mind again and again
  • Not Synced
and Scott Mc Millan, I mean
  • Not Synced
These are people who are in that space
  • Not Synced
    who are seeing these examples
  • Not Synced
and you're kind of rip and remixing it
  • Not Synced
from this space to kind of think about
  • Not Synced
wow, we can actually play with these modes
  • Not Synced
    and re-imagine them
  • Not Synced
and I think, wouldn't students also experience that?
  • Not Synced
at any given point in that kind of narrative?
  • Not Synced
excuse me, how much further we would be pushed, right
  • Not Synced
in the academy, if our students were coming to us
  • Not Synced
    thinking critically about it?
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, that's right
  • Not Synced
so there are a couple of things I want to say
  • Not Synced
    in response to that
  • Not Synced
    One is that there is
  • Not Synced
    a developmental aspect in education,
  • Not Synced
    which is fine with me
  • Not Synced
    What it means is that
  • Not Synced
at every point along the learning continuum
  • Not Synced
    it will be advantageous for
  • Not Synced
a mentor, a guide, an expert, a teacher
  • Not Synced
to be there to coach the student
  • Not Synced
to their zone of proximal development
  • Not Synced
    that's fine
  • Not Synced
another way to say that is
  • Not Synced
that I do not believe that students will make
  • Not Synced
    automatically on their own
  • Not Synced
to their own innate drive for self-improvement
  • Not Synced
all the best, you know, choices
  • Not Synced
I think there is a role for teaching
  • Not Synced
Now, there's also the developmental capacity
  • Not Synced
of the human mind, you know
  • Not Synced
kids at a certain age are able to distinguish
  • Not Synced
    like varying levels of volume
  • Not Synced
    and different sizes of containers
  • Not Synced
and at an earlier age, they're not able to
  • Not Synced
so something actually happens in the brain
  • Not Synced
that makes that next thing kick in
  • Not Synced
ahm, so there's always going to be
  • Not Synced
    it seems to me
  • Not Synced
    some way in which
  • Not Synced
    the particular developmental moment
  • Not Synced
will impose certain kinds of constraints
  • Not Synced
That said and if anybody knows about
  • Not Synced
Jerome Bruner's idea of the spiral curriculum
  • Not Synced
    that's where it comes from
  • Not Synced
there's an authentic version of any concept
  • Not Synced
that can be taught to any child
  • Not Synced
    who can read and write
  • Not Synced
you pitch it to the appropriate level of development
  • Not Synced
and you keep coming back to it
  • Not Synced
spiralling upward and upward and upward
  • Not Synced
until that magic hand off moment
  • Not Synced
which I think often happens and should happen
  • Not Synced
in the upper grades of high school
  • Not Synced
if it doesn't happen till college
  • Not Synced
    it's still not too late
  • Not Synced
it's part of the great jolt I got when I got to college
  • Not Synced
I felt like they had handed the spiral to me
  • Not Synced
it's like okay - we've brought you around
  • Not Synced
we've brought you around, we've brought you around
  • Not Synced
it's your spiral now, you know,
  • Not Synced
keep finding the level of the concept
  • Not Synced
that gets you to the next spot
  • Not Synced
Be your own coach to your own zone
  • Not Synced
    of proximal development
  • Not Synced
and this is something I left out
  • Not Synced
and I should put before you before we're done
  • Not Synced
This won't work until it's built into the curriculum
  • Not Synced
I don't want you to think that what I'm proposing
  • Not Synced
is that kids just get assigned these web spaces
  • Not Synced
and that's it and that they will magically
  • Not Synced
through tinkering come up with good stuff
  • Not Synced
This would be an amazing meeting ground
  • Not Synced
for digital experts in the discipline
  • Not Synced
librarians, advisors, student life people, edtech folks
  • Not Synced
    instructional designers
  • Not Synced
    Can you imagine?
  • Not Synced
My feeling is students would come in
  • Not Synced
and their whole first year experience
  • Not Synced
    would be digital fluency
  • Not Synced
    by means of building out
  • Not Synced
    this personal cyber infrastructure
  • Not Synced
    the first iteration of it
  • Not Synced
then at the end of your first year
  • Not Synced
    let's have a ceremony
  • Not Synced
    let's have a party
  • Not Synced
pick the domain that's going to be your domain
  • Not Synced
    for the next three years
  • Not Synced
    and make a decision there
  • Not Synced
    it's all coming of age
  • Not Synced
    it's an occasion
  • Not Synced
you have to have these rites of passage
  • Not Synced
but for that whole first year
  • Not Synced
they're thinking about narrating, curating and sharing
  • Not Synced
for the rest of their lives as learners
  • Not Synced
and I think it could be pretty neat
  • Not Synced
you know, a pretty interesting thing to do
  • Not Synced
