Lessons From the Lord's Loving Discipline - Mack Tomlinson

  • 0:00 - 0:02
Could you describe a time in your life
  • 0:02 - 0:04
in which the Lord disciplined you?
  • 0:04 - 0:06
And you look back on that time
  • 0:06 - 0:08
with utter thankfulness for the fruit
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    it yielded in your life?
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    Mack: Well, the one thing
    that comes to my mind
  • 0:12 - 0:15
is what I kind of alluded to earlier.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    In about 1990,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
the church we were in had a split -
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    a big division -
  • 0:24 - 0:28
and I was so discouraged in it.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
I was one of the pastors.
  • 0:30 - 0:34
    And I was so discouraged
    in that experience
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    that I withdrew.
  • 0:35 - 0:41
I did not take a stand
    of confronting people
  • 0:41 - 0:43
in a right way, in a loving way,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    but still confronting.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
I didn't know what to do.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    I was afraid.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
I had the fear of man,
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    so I didn't respond right.
  • 0:53 - 0:58
    And it caused me to
    move in discouragement.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
And I didn't realize at the time -
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    I honestly didn't -
  • 1:05 - 1:09
but I think for ten years,
  • 1:09 - 1:14
the Lord kind of let that
    wilderness experience -
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    I wasn't pastoring.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    We weren't even settled really.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    I worked.
  • 1:20 - 1:25
We had twins come along in 1992.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
And it was a very difficult time,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    because I couldn't
    get any clear direction.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
What does God want of me?
  • 1:32 - 1:35
And it was a refining time
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    of loving discipline.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    And I don't fully know
    why it took ten years.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
Maybe it wasn't even ten years,
  • 1:45 - 1:49
but that was a time I was
    truly disciplined by the Lord.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    Discipline is loving correction
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    to make us more fruitful.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    It's not punishment, right?
  • 1:55 - 2:00
    So, I learned huge lessons
  • 2:00 - 2:03
in retrospect that I should have done this
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    as a pastor.
  • 2:05 - 2:06
If I would have done this,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    I would have protected
    those believers more.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
If I had been courageous to say,
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    "Brother, I disagree,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
and what you're doing is wrong
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    because it's affecting others
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and you're being selfish in this."
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    Saying things like that
    when I should have,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
but I didn't have the courage to,
  • 2:27 - 2:30
I learned so much through that
  • 2:30 - 2:33
as a discipline from the Lord.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
And it's borne fruit in my life
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    to take a stand when I need to;
  • 2:40 - 2:44
to see truth is on trial here,
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    and people are going
    to be affected by this
  • 2:48 - 2:52
if I don't respond in love,
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    but still respond,
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    so I've got to.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
And that was a big hard discipline,
  • 3:00 - 3:03
but that's the biggest one I can remember
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    in my own life.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Now, for the present,
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    discipline is not joyful.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    It's grievous.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
It's hard to go through it.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    But, it's John 15 -
  • 3:16 - 3:20
    He disciplines and prunes us
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    because we are bearing fruit.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    Then we'll bear more fruit.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
James: So after that season of ten years,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
is that when you ended up back in Denton
  • 3:28 - 3:31
and the church started up again?
  • 3:31 - 3:33
Mack: Well, not the same church,
  • 3:33 - 3:37
but yes, we moved back to Denton in 1998.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
So it wasn't a full ten years,
  • 3:41 - 3:44
but it seemed like an eternity almost.
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    So we came back because
  • 3:48 - 3:51
what came to me clearly was
  • 3:51 - 3:54
it was like God had shown me in my heart,
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    I left where I was
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    out of discouragement without direction
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    to go to something positive
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    and clear and specific.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    And so, it's always wrong
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    to make decisions and choices
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    out of discouragement.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
You'll almost always make a mistake.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
It's like marrying on the rebound
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    four months later,
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    and you realize,
  • 4:23 - 4:25
oh man, what did I do?
  • 4:25 - 4:26
You know people who do that.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
So we came back to Denton in 1998.
  • 4:29 - 4:36
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    I truly had matured
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    I honestly feel like.
  • 4:43 - 4:50
And I had been preaching since 1975,
  • 4:50 - 4:57
    and now it was '98.
  • 4:57 - 5:01
I honestly believe I was now
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    prepared enough to truly preach
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    and help somebody.
  • 5:05 - 5:09
    I mean, I don't know how to
say it any more than that.
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    My spirit had matured.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
God had developed patience in me.
  • 5:13 - 5:15
He had given me a pastor's heart.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
He let me learn how to view issues
  • 5:17 - 5:19
in a right and wrong way.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
How to give answers about assurance
    of salvation when somebody comes.
  • 5:23 - 5:26
How to help them analyze it.
  • 5:26 - 5:33
He gave me a pastor's heart.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
But if I hadn't been through
    what I'd gone through
  • 5:36 - 5:38
in those years in the 1990's,
  • 5:38 - 5:41
I wouldn't have been near as equipped.
  • 5:41 - 5:49
So I praise God now for the fruit of it.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
I wouldn't want to go through it again.
  • 5:51 - 5:56
    It's like open heart surgery.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    Praise God for that surgery!
  • 5:58 - 6:02
Lord, may it never be again.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
But when you can have it,
  • 6:04 - 6:07
you've got to have it to save your life.
  • 6:07 - 6:08
    You're thankful for it
  • 6:08 - 6:12
and you're thankful for the surgeon.
