23 WE ALL NEED FAMILY - Don't Give Beef To A Baby....

  • 0:03 - 0:04
    The Call of Jesus
  • 0:06 - 0:11
    Welcome to lesson 23:
    We All Need Family.
  • 0:11 - 0:15
We have been looking at many things,
when it comes to finding the person of peace,
  • 0:15 - 0:19
and going out, and preaching the gospel,
    and healing the sick,
  • 0:19 - 0:24
    and casting out demons,
and all of this is so, so important.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
But there is more, because what do we do
    when we have done that?
  • 0:28 - 0:31
What do we do when we have found
    that person of peace
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    and led them to God?
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    In Matthew 28:18-20
    Jesus says this:
  • 0:37 - 0:41
"All authority in heaven and earth
    has been given to Me.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    Therefore go and make disciples
    of all nations,
  • 0:44 - 0:48
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
  • 0:48 - 0:52
and teaching them to obey everything
    I have commanded you.
  • 0:52 - 0:58
And surely I am with you always,
to the very end of the age."
  • 0:59 - 1:03
So, what we do regarding our mission call,
    all of us,
  • 1:03 - 1:08
is to go out and make disciples,
    baptizing them.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    So, baptizing them in water
and baptizing with the Holy Spirit,
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    and helping them to receive
a new life is the beginning.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
But then, after we have done this,
    Jesus said: And teach them...
  • 1:20 - 1:25
to obey everything He has commanded.
  • 1:25 - 1:31
So, when a person comes to Christ,
first they are, as the Bible says,
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    like a newborn baby.
They are now new in Christ.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
But then we have been given
    a command to teach them,
  • 1:40 - 1:44
or to feed them, to help them,
    to disciple them
  • 1:44 - 1:48
to obey everything Jesus has commanded.
  • 1:48 - 1:54
We are here to help people to grow up
    and become strong in Christ.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
And what you'll see when you start
    to live this life,
  • 1:58 - 2:02
lead people to Christ, and do what we
have look at here in "The Call of Jesus",
  • 2:02 - 2:06
you'll see that those people you meet
and lead to Christ are very, very different.
  • 2:06 - 2:13
Some people are already in church,
already somehow love Jesus, in many ways,
  • 2:13 - 2:18
have grown up with the Bible,
but they need the baptism or the Holy Spirit,
  • 2:18 - 2:23
freedom, and when you give them that,
they are already very, very strong,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    because they have grown up
    with the Word of God.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    They already know Christ.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
They just needed help to move on.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    Other people are very religious,
    like, very, very religious.
  • 2:36 - 2:44
You need to pull down that religious mindset
and teach them something completely new -
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    who Christ really is
    and what the gospel is.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    They've heard of Jesus,
    they know the Bible,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
but they have got it wrong.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
Other people are very, very new,
    like me.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
When I gave my life to Christ
I've never opened the Bible before.
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    I knew nothing.
  • 3:04 - 3:08
I didn't need to pull down a lot of ideas
    and strongholds, or religion
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    in the beginning.
    I just needed milk.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    I needed a foundation.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    We are all different.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
But one thing is certain for all of us.
That is - we need people around us.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    We all need family.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
Not just to come in a church.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    There is a difference between
coming in a church and having family.
  • 3:31 - 3:36
You can be in a church, you can be a member
in a church, you can sit in a church,
  • 3:36 - 3:39
and there can be a pastor who's your pastor,
    or your leader,
  • 3:39 - 3:42
but it's not parents, it's not family.
  • 3:42 - 3:48
It's not people who really lay down
their lives to help you to grow up.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
The sad thing is, I have been in church
for years, without really having parents.
  • 3:53 - 3:57
And there is a big difference between
    being a leader, having leaders,
  • 3:57 - 4:00
and then having parents and family
    who really cares.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
Let me read something from my book
    "The Call of Jesus".
  • 4:04 - 4:06
"Every person we meet is different.
  • 4:06 - 4:10
Every person is in a different place
in their life and has different needs,
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    but everyone needs fellowship.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    None of us are called
    to walk this life alone.
  • 4:16 - 4:22
We often say that we are the body
of Christ here on earth, and that is correct.
  • 4:22 - 4:27
But 'we' is not me alone
    or you alone.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
'We' are all of us together.
  • 4:30 - 4:34
'We' alone is not the body of Christ.
  • 4:34 - 4:38
'We' alone is only a member of the body.
  • 4:38 - 4:44
So 'we' are one of many stones in the church
    that Jesus is building together.
  • 4:44 - 4:51
You cannot live as a disciple alone,
    without like-minded people around you."
  • 4:51 - 4:54
I want to say this again.
    It is so important.
  • 4:54 - 4:59
We are the body of Christ,
but we, or I, it's not me alone.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
I'm the body of Christ, yes,
    but not alone.
  • 5:01 - 5:05
I'm the body of Christ together
    with other members.
  • 5:05 - 5:10
We together become the body of Christ
    and we need each other.
  • 5:10 - 5:14
We are never called to live this alone.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
Especially when a person is born again.
  • 5:17 - 5:22
The Bible says that those persons
who are born again are babies in Christ.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    They are babies.
  • 5:24 - 5:28
    And they need help.
    They need help as babies:
  • 5:28 - 5:34
milk, other things, people around them
to nurse them, to take care of them,
  • 5:34 - 5:38
to help them, so they can grow up
    and become stronger.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
And Bible talks about young ones in faith.
  • 5:41 - 5:45
And then they will grow up and now they
    become adults, mature,
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    and become parents in faith.
  • 5:48 - 5:52
    Spiritual parents.
And then they get their own spiritual kids.
  • 5:52 - 5:57
Exactly as we see in the natural.
  • 5:57 - 6:00
If we look at the natural world
    today,
  • 6:00 - 6:05
we have babies, we have young ones,
    teenagers, and we have parents.
  • 6:05 - 6:08
We don't put the same burden
    on everyone.
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    We expect more from teenagers
    then we do from babies.
  • 6:12 - 6:15
And we expect more from adults.
  • 6:15 - 6:21
And we don't want people to be 45 years
old and still live home with mom and dad.
  • 6:21 - 6:25
No. We want them to grow up
and be independent from us, mature,
  • 6:25 - 6:29
    leave mom and dad
    and get their own children.
  • 6:29 - 6:32
Like it is in the natural,
  • 6:32 - 6:34
it should be in the spiritual.
  • 6:34 - 6:40
You don't serve a big, big, juicy steak
    to a baby.
  • 6:40 - 6:44
That baby would die if you just leave
    that baby with a steak.
  • 6:44 - 6:48
In the same way, if you give milk
    to a teenager,
  • 6:48 - 6:50
they would survive on that milk a little,
  • 6:50 - 6:52
but they would not really grow up
on that milk and become strong.
  • 6:52 - 6:57
    Why? Because a teenager needs
    more than milk.
  • 6:57 - 7:00
And it's so important that we know
    those different levels,
  • 7:00 - 7:03
    not only in the natural,
    but in the spiritual.
  • 7:03 - 7:10
Let me read something from 1 John,
where he talks about the different levels.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    In 1 John 2:12-14 he's saying this:
  • 7:12 - 7:14
"I am writing to you, dear children,
  • 7:14 - 7:18
because your sins have been forgiven
    on account of His name.
  • 7:18 - 7:22
I am writing to you, fathers, because
you know Him who is from the beginning.
  • 7:22 - 7:27
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
  • 7:27 - 7:30
I'm writing to you, dear children,
    because you know the Father.
  • 7:30 - 7:34
I'm writing to you, fathers, because
you know Him who is from the beginning.
  • 7:34 - 7:38
I'm writing to you, young men,
    because you are strong,
  • 7:38 - 7:43
and the Word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one."
  • 7:43 - 7:47
Here John writes to three different
    groups of people.
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    He writes to the children,
    in another words - babies;
  • 7:51 - 7:56
he writes to the young ones,
and he writes to the parents, to the fathers.
  • 7:57 - 8:00
    He says different things
    to the different people.
  • 8:00 - 8:02
Why? Because people are in different
    places in their life.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    When people come to faith,
    they are like babies.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
    They need milk.
  • 8:10 - 8:12
To those people who need milk he said:
  • 8:12 - 8:16
I'm writing to you that your sins
    have been forgiven. Why?
  • 8:16 - 8:19
Because when people are new in their faith,
  • 8:19 - 8:24
there are attacks, there are doubts.
  • 8:24 - 8:28
Oh... Is this right? What about this?
    And they hear something and...
  • 8:28 - 8:32
    Oh no... Somebody says something.
    Oh, maybe it's a call.
  • 8:32 - 8:36
    God doesn't says this.
    Maybe God doesn't says this.
  • 8:36 - 8:40
And then they fall in sin.
Oh, Satan comes and condemns them:
  • 8:40 - 8:43
    "You are not saved anymore."
Oh no, I'm not saved anymore.
  • 8:43 - 8:48
And there is just a lot of, lot of attacks
when you are new in faith.
  • 8:48 - 8:51
    And I remember, I experienced
    all of those attacks.
  • 8:51 - 8:56
I experienced the doubt, I fell
and Satan came and condemned me.
  • 8:56 - 9:00
I was fighting a lot in the beginning.
  • 9:01 - 9:04
    But I needed somebody,
    like John here said,
  • 9:04 - 9:08
    Come on!
You are forgiven because of His name.
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    Rise up again! Be strong!
  • 9:10 - 9:13
    So, I needed somebody...
  • 9:13 - 9:15
    and you need somebody...
  • 9:15 - 9:18
or you need to be there for somebody.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
Those who are new they often
    need to learn to walk.
  • 9:22 - 9:26
    They fall, make mistakes,
    need to rise up again.
  • 9:26 - 9:29
They need milk. They need help.
  • 9:29 - 9:32
    They need other people
    to teach them the truth.
  • 9:33 - 9:36
Not just give them the Bible and say:
    Goodbye, read it. No.
  • 9:36 - 9:41
They need somebody to eat the Word and
help them explain them the Word for them.
  • 9:42 - 9:45
That is what babies - new believers need.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
But then, there are young ones.
  • 9:50 - 9:54
    John says: You are strong,
you have overcome the evil one.
  • 9:54 - 9:58
When you come to faith in the beginning,
there's a period where there is a lot of attacks.
  • 9:58 - 10:00
Satan really wants to get you down.
  • 10:00 - 10:04
And many fall away in that period,
because there is no one to help them.
  • 10:05 - 10:10
But then there is a time where you have
    overcome that first beginning period.
  • 10:10 - 10:13
You have overcome the evil one,
    as John says.
  • 10:13 - 10:17
    You are strong.
And the Word of God abides in you.
  • 10:17 - 10:20
So now you don't need milk anymore,
    or only milk.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
You don't need people to teach you,
and teach you, and teach you.
  • 10:23 - 10:27
    You can teach yourself.
    You can eat by yourself.
  • 10:27 - 10:30
    You can get the Bible
    and start to read it.
  • 10:30 - 10:34
You got the Bible in the beginning, but now
you start to eat by yourself even more.
  • 10:34 - 10:38
And those who are young ones,
they don't need milk like that.
  • 10:38 - 10:43
    They need to be challenged.
    They need to take steps.
  • 10:43 - 10:46
They need to go on mission trips.
They need to be out there...
  • 10:46 - 10:50
and try. Try more and more by themselves
  • 10:50 - 10:53
to obey Christ and live this life.
  • 10:53 - 10:55
Exactly as it is in the natural.
  • 10:55 - 10:58
When you grow up and become teenager,
there is a time where you need
  • 10:58 - 11:02
to break up a little and try to get your own
    experience in life.
  • 11:02 - 11:05
Then we have the fathers, the parents.
  • 11:05 - 11:09
John is saying: You know Him
    who is from the beginning.
  • 11:09 - 11:12
That means: You have been with God
    for many years now.
  • 11:12 - 11:14
    You see the big picture.
  • 11:14 - 11:17
You don't get distracted so easy.
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    You know God.
    You have experience with God.
  • 11:19 - 11:22
    You can be there
    and help other people.
  • 11:22 - 11:28
Like it is in the natural,
    it is in the spirit.
  • 11:28 - 11:30
    It's the same, somehow.
  • 11:30 - 11:35
    And we all need it.
    We all need family.
  • 11:36 - 11:40
Sadly, there are also people who have been
    Christians for many, many years,
  • 11:40 - 11:44
but are still very, very immature.
  • 11:44 - 11:49
We read that many places in the Bible.
In 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 we read this:
  • 11:49 - 11:54
"Brothers and sisters, I could not address
you as people who live by the Spirit
  • 11:54 - 11:58
but as people who are still worldly -
    mere infants in Christ.
  • 11:58 - 12:02
I gave you milk, not solid food,
for you were not yet ready for it.
  • 12:02 - 12:04
Indeed, you are still not ready.
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    You are still worldly.
  • 12:07 - 12:12
But since there is jealousies and
quarrels amongst you, are you not worldly?
  • 12:12 - 12:15
Are you not acting like mere humans?"
  • 12:15 - 12:19
So, Paul here wrote to Corinthians
    and rebuked them.
  • 12:19 - 12:24
Come on! You are like infants!
You are like babies in Christ.
  • 12:24 - 12:26
You should have grown up by now.
  • 12:26 - 12:29
And there is still that in churches today,
  • 12:30 - 12:34
that people should be more mature.
  • 12:34 - 12:37
You can be in church for 30 years
    without being born again,
  • 12:37 - 12:41
but you can also be in church
long time and still be spiritual infant.
  • 12:41 - 12:42
    And we don't want that.
  • 12:42 - 12:45
We want people to grow up.
  • 12:45 - 12:48
But for us to help people to grow up,
    we need to understand
  • 12:48 - 12:53
where they are in their life
    and help them from there.
  • 12:53 - 12:55
    We need to understand it.
  • 12:55 - 13:00
And we read that clearly in Hebrews 5,
because in Hebrews 5:11-14 we read this:
  • 13:00 - 13:02
"We have so much more to say about this,
  • 13:02 - 13:07
but it is hard to make it clear to you
because you no longer try to understand.
  • 13:07 - 13:11
In fact, though by this time
    you ought to be teachers,
  • 13:11 - 13:16
you need someone to teach you
the elementary truths of God's word all over again.
  • 13:16 - 13:20
You need milk, not solid food!
  • 13:20 - 13:23
    Everyone who lives on milk,
    being still an infant,
  • 13:23 - 13:27
is not acquainted with the teaching
    about righteousness.
  • 13:27 - 13:29
But solid food is for the mature,
  • 13:29 - 13:35
who by constant use have trained themselves
    to discerning good and evil."
  • 13:36 - 13:43
Here we read that the author of Hebrews
    wanted to teach people something,
  • 13:43 - 13:46
    but they were not there
    in their life yet.
  • 13:46 - 13:48
They were not ready to receive it.
  • 13:48 - 13:55
So they needed to go back and one more time
give them the elementary teaching of Christ.
  • 13:55 - 14:00
And this is what it is today.
We need family. We need people around us.
  • 14:00 - 14:04
We need people who are babies,
you are young ones, who are parents.
  • 14:04 - 14:09
We need to see them grow up
and be there for each other.
  • 14:09 - 14:13
    And again, remember,
you are not alone in this.
  • 14:13 - 14:16
You are not supposed to be
    the whole family alone.
  • 14:16 - 14:20
But God will put people in your life,
  • 14:21 - 14:24
and together, you can help people
    to grow up.
  • 14:24 - 14:29
And that is some of the main focus also,
when we read about the five-fold ministry,
  • 14:29 - 14:33
we have looked at before in this book,
    before in this video series.
  • 14:33 - 14:36
In Ephesians 4:11-16 we read this:
  • 14:36 - 14:41
"So Christ Himself gave apostles, the prophets,
the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,
  • 14:41 - 14:47
to equip His people for the works of service,
so that the body of Christ may be built up
  • 14:47 - 14:52
until we all reach unity in the faith
and in the knowledge of the Son of God
  • 14:52 - 14:58
to become mature, attaining the whole measure
    of the fullness of Christ.
  • 14:58 - 15:03
Then we are no longer infants,
tossed back and forth by the waves,
  • 15:03 - 15:06
and blown here and there by every wind
    of teaching
  • 15:06 - 15:12
and by the cunning and craftiness of people
    in their deceitful schemes.
  • 15:12 - 15:19
Instead, preaching the truth in love,
we will grow up to become in every respect
  • 15:19 - 15:24
the mature body in Him who is the Head,
    that is, Christ.
  • 15:24 - 15:30
And from Him the whole body, joined and
held together by every supporting ligament,
  • 15:30 - 15:35
grows and builds itself up in love,
as each part does its work."
  • 15:35 - 15:41
I know this was a long text, but what
we see here is that God has given people
  • 15:41 - 15:48
in the church to grow up people,
so we are no longer infants,
  • 15:48 - 15:51
but we grow up to maturity.
  • 15:51 - 15:54
But God has not given that
    to one person alone.
  • 15:54 - 15:58
    God has given different gifts
    and different people.
  • 15:58 - 16:02
Here we read about the five-fold ministry
something we have talked about before.
  • 16:02 - 16:04
    We need that.
  • 16:04 - 16:08
    Are you strong, for example,
in finding the person of peace?
  • 16:08 - 16:11
    Are you more evangelistic and
it comes very natural to you?
  • 16:11 - 16:15
Then go out, find that person of peace.
  • 16:15 - 16:21
Do what you are strong in
and help to make other people strong.
  • 16:21 - 16:26
But you also need other people beside you,
who are maybe stronger to nurse them
  • 16:26 - 16:30
and take care of those new believers,
    you have now reached.
  • 16:31 - 16:36
And if we come together like this
    and help each other,
  • 16:36 - 16:42
we will see not only people born again,
but we will see people grow up to maturity
  • 16:42 - 16:45
    in very, very short time.
  • 16:45 - 16:49
And it will also set you free, because
you who are very strong evangelistic,
  • 16:49 - 16:54
you don't need to go the long way
and give milk and nurse those people.
  • 16:54 - 16:58
You can be free to move on and
    find other people out there.
  • 16:59 - 17:02
    So, try to imagine,
if we, as the body of Christ,
  • 17:02 - 17:06
since we took the Jesus' call
and we started to live it out, together,
  • 17:06 - 17:11
    came together and found other
    strong gifts in it,
  • 17:11 - 17:15
    and together we went out
to find a person of peace.
  • 17:15 - 17:20
But let somebody be there and lay
a foundation and be there for each other.
  • 17:20 - 17:26
I still remember so much in the beginning,
    I was fighting a lot.
  • 17:26 - 17:31
But then I had my father-in-law,
    he became my father-in-law,
  • 17:31 - 17:40
an old, mature man, father in the faith,
he took me in and most of the milk I got
  • 17:40 - 17:45
was on his couch, sitting there
with the Bible and asking a lot of questions.
  • 17:45 - 17:47
He helped me to grow up.
  • 17:47 - 17:51
He also let me make mistakes.
    I made many, many mistakes.
  • 17:51 - 17:53
    But I learned by them.
  • 17:53 - 17:56
And now I'm not a baby anymore.
  • 17:56 - 17:59
I still have things to learn,
    but I have grown up.
  • 18:00 - 18:04
But I have also decided never to forget
how it was in the beginning.
  • 18:04 - 18:06
And I would say the same to you.
  • 18:06 - 18:10
Never forget how it was in the beginning,
    when you came to faith.
  • 18:10 - 18:14
    Why? Because in that moment
when you forget how it was in the beginning,
  • 18:14 - 18:17
you start to lose your patience
    with people.
  • 18:17 - 18:18
    You start to get frustrated.
  • 18:18 - 18:21
    Oh, why is he struggling?
    Why is he falling?
  • 18:21 - 18:24
Why does it smell like diaper inhere?
  • 18:24 - 18:27
Why do I need to help them every time?
  • 18:27 - 18:30
Hey, you needed help in the beginning.
  • 18:30 - 18:32
    Don't forget that.
  • 18:32 - 18:36
Now you can walk, now you a mature,
but in the beginning you needed help.
  • 18:37 - 18:40
As you needed people around you
    in the beginning,
  • 18:40 - 18:42
    be there for other people.
  • 18:42 - 18:46
Don't forget where you came from,
because then you will lose your patience.
  • 18:46 - 18:48
You will give up too easy.
  • 18:48 - 18:51
No, remember how it was in the beginning.
  • 18:51 - 18:55
And then you will have more patience
and you will be better to help people,
  • 18:55 - 18:59
to challenge them, to see them grow up,
    to be mature.
  • 18:59 - 19:02
I want to talk more about this
    in the next lesson,
  • 19:02 - 19:06
where I will talk more about
    how to grow people up.
  • 19:06 - 19:10
    But remember this.
Remember that we are the body.
  • 19:10 - 19:12
    We need each other.
  • 19:12 - 19:15
And people are on different levels
    in their life.
  • 19:15 - 19:18
And we need to be better to recognize
    where people are,
  • 19:19 - 19:22
and then from there help them to grow up.
  • 19:22 - 19:26
I have much more about that in my book
    "The Call of Jesus".
  • 19:26 - 19:31
I also have some videos where I already
talk more about this spiritual levels.
  • 19:31 - 19:35
In the description of this video
    I will put some links
  • 19:35 - 19:38
where you can go in and see those videos.
  • 19:38 - 19:41
The next time I will tell more personal,
    from my life
  • 19:41 - 19:45
    and give you more tools
    how you can help people,
  • 19:45 - 19:49
    when you are out there,
in their homes, to lay a foundation,
  • 19:49 - 19:51
how you can help those people
    you've found,
  • 19:51 - 19:54
    who are persons of peace,
    to grow up.
  • 19:54 - 19:56
God bless you! See you next time!
    Bye-bye!
