Matt Lees ABILITY Magazine Interview

  • 0:20 - 0:23
I'm Matt Lees. I'm a golfer by trade.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
You wouldn't think it considering I have one hand.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
I've been doing it for a long time.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
I feel like this is what I was born to do.
  • 0:32 - 0:33
Growing up having only one hand
  • 0:33 - 0:37
and being able to be a golfer at a level that
  • 0:37 - 0:40
most people can't come close to achieving
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    even with two hands.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
It's been the drive for me in my personal life
  • 0:45 - 0:49
and in my golf game, the difficulty of it, and
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    ...being able to overcome.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
I would use athletics to kind of make myself even
  • 0:55 - 1:01
with the other kids I went to school with.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
People would give me a hard time.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
The way that I would deal with that is by
  • 1:05 - 1:09
excelling at in sports and beating them at sports.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
When it got to golf, golf is the hardest thing
  • 1:12 - 1:17
I could think of that you could be really good at
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    with one hand.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
It's funny, most people would think I come from a family that are big time golfers, but honestly
  • 1:22 - 1:29
I'm not. I actually got my own dad involved in the game
  • 1:29 - 1:31
after I had taken it up.
  • 1:31 - 1:36
I grew up caddying, and the thousands of rounds
  • 1:36 - 1:38
caddying...that's the one thing that I picked up...
  • 1:38 - 1:45
...if you want to learn about a guy, you want to get
  • 1:45 - 1:47
to know somebody, go out and play a round of golf
  • 1:47 - 1:50
with them. Because, by the end of day, you'll know
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    exactly the person he is.
  • 1:53 - 1:57
Golf, for any body with any ability starting out
  • 1:57 - 2:04
is very difficult to learn and to get the feel for it.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
Ninety percent of folks out there that want to
  • 2:07 - 2:10
learn how to play golf...they'll give up on week one.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
Because it's just a very challenging thing to do
  • 2:15 - 2:24
The golf ball is only a small ball and you gotta
  • 2:24 - 2:28
hit it with a stick. It requires timing...
  • 2:28 - 2:32
...it requires hand - eye coordination.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
I have a tattoo that says, "In Golf As in Life."
  • 2:37 - 2:39
The way that you go through life
  • 2:40 - 2:43
...the decisions you make... the way you react...
  • 2:43 - 2:46
...to problems that arise... the way you react to...
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    ...good things happening to you...
  • 2:49 - 2:51
Throughout the day at a round of golf...
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    ...you have obstacles to overcome
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    ...somethings go your way...somethings don't...
  • 2:59 - 3:00
...you catch good breaks... you catch bad breaks...
  • 3:01 - 3:03
Sometimes that guy you're playing gets lucky...
  • 3:04 - 3:07
There's so many things that come up in a round of golf.
  • 3:07 - 3:08
For me, it's almost like my mantra...
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    ...what I live by...
  • 3:13 - 3:17
When I'm out golfing, it's so much practicing
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    my golf swing...
  • 3:18 - 3:24
...or practicing pulling off shots or what my score is...
  • 3:24 - 3:26
My goal, when I'm out on the golf course, is
  • 3:26 - 3:31
how well I handle my emotions and how well
  • 3:32 - 3:34
I handle the things I come up to throughout a round of golf.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
    Golf is a mental game.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
And it's all about being able to control
  • 3:41 - 3:45
your emotions and it's about believing in yourself
  • 3:45 - 3:51
It's not what your score is or how well you're playing
  • 3:51 - 3:55
...days when you can handle yourself and your
  • 3:55 - 3:58
emotions mentally... if you can do that...
  • 3:58 - 4:03
then, the scores and the good shots... they come
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    with that.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
The one thing that allowed me to stick with it
  • 4:08 - 4:12
and to continue to pursue my dream
  • 4:12 - 4:16
was support that I got from my parents and my
  • 4:16 - 4:20
family. As absurd as it sounds for an 8 or 9 year old
  • 4:20 - 4:22
to say that I'm going to be a professional golfer and
  • 4:22 - 4:25
have one hand... not that I'm a little older and looking
  • 4:25 - 4:28
back, the support that they showed
  • 4:28 - 4:31
when I was younger, that's the reason why I'm still
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    here today playing golf.
  • 4:33 - 4:40
They instilled that belief in myself when I was
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    ...a little kid.
  • 4:41 - 4:45
And that has always been with me
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    ...through the years.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    Everybody's got their story.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    This one's mine.
