Not Synced
Every other night in Japan
-
Not Synced
I step out of my apartment,
-
Not Synced
I climb up a hill for 15 minutes,
-
Not Synced
and then I head into my local health club,
-
Not Synced
where three ping-pong tables
are set up in a studio.
-
Not Synced
And space is limited,
-
Not Synced
so at every table
-
Not Synced
one pair of players practices forehands,
-
Not Synced
another practices backhands,
-
Not Synced
and every now and then,
the balls collide in midair
-
Not Synced
and everybody says,
-
Not Synced
"Wow!"
-
Not Synced
Then, choosing lots,
-
Not Synced
we select partners and play doubles.
-
Not Synced
But I honestly couldn't
tell you who's won,
-
Not Synced
because we change partners
every five minutes.
-
Not Synced
And everybody is trying really hard
-
Not Synced
to win points
-
Not Synced
but nobody is keeping track
of who is winning games.
-
Not Synced
And after an hour or so
of furious exertion,
-
Not Synced
I can honestly tell you
-
Not Synced
that not knowing who has won
-
Not Synced
feels like the ultimate victory.
-
Not Synced
In Japan, it's been said
-
Not Synced
they've created a competitive spirit
without competition.
-
Not Synced
Now, all of you know that geopolitics
is best followed by watching ping-pong.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
The two strongest powers in the world
-
Not Synced
were fiercest enemies
-
Not Synced
until, in 1972, an American ping-pong team
was allowed to visit Communist China.
-
Not Synced
And as soon as the former adversaries
-
Not Synced
were gathered around
some small green tables,
-
Not Synced
each of them could claim a victory,
-
Not Synced
and the whole world
could breathe more easily.
-
Not Synced
China's leader, Mao Tse-tung,
-
Not Synced
wrote a whole manual on ping-pong,
-
Not Synced
and he called the sport
-
Not Synced
"a spiritual nuclear weapon."
-
Not Synced
And it's been said that the only
honorary lifelong member
-
Not Synced
of the US Table Tennis Association
-
Not Synced
is the then-President Richard Nixon,
-
Not Synced
who helped to engineer
this win-win situation
-
Not Synced
through ping-pong diplomacy.
-
Not Synced
But long before that,
-
Not Synced
really the history of the modern world
-
Not Synced
was best told through
the bouncing white ball.
-
Not Synced
Ping-pong sounds like
a cousin of sing-song,
-
Not Synced
like something Eastern,
-
Not Synced
but actually it's believed
that it was invented by high-class Brits
-
Not Synced
during Victorian times,
-
Not Synced
who started hitting wine corks
over walls of books after dinner.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
No exaggeration.
-
Not Synced
And by the end of World War I,
-
Not Synced
the sport was dominated by players
from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire:
-
Not Synced
eight of our nine
early world championships
-
Not Synced
were claimed by Hungary.
-
Not Synced
And Eastern Europeans grew so adept
-
Not Synced
at hitting back everything
that was hit at them
-
Not Synced
that they almost brought
the whole sport to a standstill.
-
Not Synced
In one championship match
in Prague in 1936,
-
Not Synced
the first point is said to have lasted
two hours and 12 minutes.
-
Not Synced
The first point!
-
Not Synced
Longer than a Mad Max movie.
-
Not Synced
And according to one of the players,
the umpire had to retire with a sore neck
-
Not Synced
before the point was concluded.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
That player started hitting
the ball back with his left hand
-
Not Synced
and dictating chess moves between shots.
-
Not Synced
Many in the audience
started, of course, filing out,
-
Not Synced
as that single point lasted
maybe 12,000 strokes,
-
Not Synced
and an emergency meeting of
the International Table Tennis Association
-
Not Synced
had to be held then and there,
-
Not Synced
and soon the rules were changed
-
Not Synced
so that no game could last
longer than 20 minutes.
-
Not Synced
Sixteen years later,
Japan entered the picture
-
Not Synced
when a little-known
watchmaker called Hiroji Satoh
-
Not Synced
showed up at the world championships
in Bombay in 1952.
-
Not Synced
And Satoh was not very big,
he wasn't highly rated,
-
Not Synced
he was wearing spectacles,
-
Not Synced
but he was armed with a paddle
that was not pimpled,
-
Not Synced
as other paddles were,
-
Not Synced
but covered by a thick spongy rubber foam.
-
Not Synced
And thanks to this
silencing secret weapon,
-
Not Synced
the little-known Satoh won a gold medal.
-
Not Synced
One million people came out
into the streets of Tokyo
-
Not Synced
to greet him up on his return,
-
Not Synced
and really Japan's postwar resurgence
was set into motion.
-
Not Synced
What I learned though
at my regular games in Japan
-
Not Synced
is more what could be called
the inner sport of global domination,
-
Not Synced
sometimes known as life.
-
Not Synced
We never play singles in our club,
-
Not Synced
only doubles,
-
Not Synced
and because, as I say,
we change partners every five minutes,
-
Not Synced
if you do happen to lose,
you're very likely to win
-
Not Synced
six minutes later.
-
Not Synced
We also play best-of-two sets,
-
Not Synced
so often there's no loser at all.
-
Not Synced
Ping-pong diplomacy.
-
Not Synced
And I always remember that as a boy
growing up in England, I was taught
-
Not Synced
that the point of a game was to win,
-
Not Synced
but in Japan I'm encouraged to believe
that really the point of a game
-
Not Synced
is to make as many people as possible
around you feel that they are winners.
-
Not Synced
So you're not careening up and down
as an individual might,
-
Not Synced
but you're part of a regular,
steady chorus.
-
Not Synced
The most skillful players in our club
-
Not Synced
deploy their skills to turn
a 9-1 lead for their team
-
Not Synced
into a 9-9 game in which everybody
is intensely involved,
-
Not Synced
and my friend who hits
these high looping lobs
-
Not Synced
that smaller players flail at and miss,
-
Not Synced
well he wins a lot of points,
but I think he's thought of as a loser.
-
Not Synced
In Japan, a game of ping-pong
is really like an act of love.
-
Not Synced
You're learning how to play with somebody,
-
Not Synced
rather than against her.
-
Not Synced
And I'll confess at first
this seemed to me
-
Not Synced
to take all the fun out of the sport.
-
Not Synced
I couldn't exult after a tremendous upset
victory against our strongest players,
-
Not Synced
because six minutes later
with a new partner
-
Not Synced
I was falling behind again.
-
Not Synced
On the other hand,
-
Not Synced
I never felt disconsolate,
-
Not Synced
and when I flew away from Japan
and started playing singles again
-
Not Synced
with my English arch-rival,
-
Not Synced
I noticed that after every defeat,
I was really broken-hearted.
-
Not Synced
But after every victory,
I couldn't sleep either
-
Not Synced

So you're not careening up and down as an individual might,
"Careening" should be written "creating"
