[Soft music playing in the background]
  • 0:14 - 0:16
[Angelina Borges] Hi, my name is Angelina Borges.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
[Courtney Holston] My name is Courtney Holston.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
[Shellye Ferguson] My name is Shellye Ferguson.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
[Sarah Krupa] My name is Sarah Krupa.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
[Xavier Bianchi] My name is Xavier Bianchi.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
[Marc Anthony Amiscua] Hi, [soft laugh] my name is Marc Anthony Amiscua.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
[Pascual Sanchez] My name is Pascual Sanchez.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
[Angelina Borges] DSPS has helped me
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    grow as a student and
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    has helped me accomplish things
  • 0:40 - 0:44
that I have never been able to accomplish in school.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
I have always struggled in school
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    and DSPS has helped me
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    with testing and tutoring
  • 0:53 - 0:58
and has given me the tools I need to succeed.
  • 0:58 - 1:03
[Shellye Ferguson] They provided my accommodations for my classes,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    counseling services, tutoring services;
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    those are the primary ways.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
[Xavier Bianchi] I’ve been trained also on Kurzweil
  • 1:10 - 1:12
which I enjoy and use frequently.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
The staff, the technical support has been amazing.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
We have to include here our study area here
  • 1:18 - 1:22
that we have here specifically DSPS with, computers
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    that needs, with, private tutoring.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
The list goes on and on
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    but is exceptional
  • 1:27 - 1:29
and it is what helps me to be successful now.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    At Napa Valley College
  • 1:31 - 1:33
I was able to have a 4.0 last semester
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    as an example, so wonderful.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
[Marc Anthony Amiscua] DSPS has definitely helped me
  • 1:38 - 1:41
in probably more ways than one,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    especially personally wise, knowing that,
  • 1:44 - 1:49
I thought I that was just slow
  • 1:49 - 1:54
and I didn’t know, that I actually even had a disability,
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    of some sort.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    And in regards to that
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    it definitely has helped me
  • 2:02 - 2:04
to be a lot more confident
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    in knowing that it’s ok,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
at the pace that I am going,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
and who I am personally wise
  • 2:10 - 2:16
and that, that the disability doesn’t have to define me.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
[Pascual Sanchez] DSPS, has helped me with,
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    tutoring in math.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    I haven’t really taken any,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    English courses yet
  • 2:26 - 2:28
because I have been avoiding it but (laughing)
  • 2:28 - 2:30
I should be taking some more English classes.
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    I did start off
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    with a couple English classes
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    when I first started.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
[Angelina Borges] The Testing and Tutoring center has helped me
  • 2:40 - 2:44
with tests by giving me extra time
  • 2:44 - 2:48
and a space where it is quiet
  • 2:48 - 2:50
and I feel that has help me
  • 2:50 - 2:55
the most because I have a hard time focusing on tests.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
So that helped me with my grades
  • 2:58 - 3:01
and just succeeding where I struggle.
  • 3:01 - 3:06
[Shellye Ferguson] Captions for videos pertaining to my classes.
  • 3:06 - 3:14
Interpreters for my classes obviously because I’m deaf.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    [Sarah Krupa]- Specifically one-on-one tutoring
  • 3:16 - 3:20
with the tutors that have experience with people
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    and their specific disabilities;
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    has been very important
  • 3:24 - 3:27
and also learning a little bit more
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    about how I learn,
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    specifically how I learn.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
I learn really well with tactile,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    writing things down,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    visually using colors,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
just lots of tricks that have
  • 3:41 - 3:45
made my experience a lot, a lot easier.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
[Xavier Bianchi] Being able to have time and-a-half on a test,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
being able to leave the classroom,
  • 3:50 - 3:52
go to the Testing and Tutoring Center
  • 3:52 - 3:58
where I am in a private enclosed space with no distractions,
  • 3:58 - 4:02
    no noise, is immensely important
  • 4:02 - 4:06
because it has been able to help me cope with lack of concentration.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    Certain ADHD issues,
  • 4:08 - 4:12
as far as being easily distracted
  • 4:12 - 4:15
also, you know just the, I was,
  • 4:15 - 4:17
I have suffered from traumatic brain injury
  • 4:17 - 4:20
so I have a hard time with short term memory loss,
  • 4:20 - 4:21
it is something I battle every day
  • 4:21 - 4:24
and the tutoring and redundancy of that,
  • 4:24 - 4:28
has helped me overcome those short term memory loss and issues.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
Marc Anthony Amiscua] A Smart Pen
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    and what that does
  • 4:31 - 4:35
in terms of a Smart Pen is being able to,
  • 4:35 - 4:42
write, while the pen is actually recording the lecture.
  • 4:42 - 4:46
I am able to record the notes on paper.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
So what that means is that later on
  • 4:48 - 4:49
when I am able to study,
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    and do the assignments
  • 4:51 - 4:57
    I’m able to, listen to,
  • 4:57 - 5:00
what the professor had talked about during class
  • 5:00 - 5:04
    and during the lecture,
  • 5:04 - 5:07
as it connects to the notes I have put down.
  • 5:07 - 5:11
Especially if the notes are being
  • 5:11 - 5:13
or the pace of the class
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    if a little bit fast
  • 5:14 - 5:15
especially in the terms of lectures.
  • 5:15 - 5:16
I’m able to fill in the blanks
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    that I, kind of missing
  • 5:18 - 5:20
in the notes that I’ve taken during class.
  • 5:20 - 5:22
[Pascual Sanchez] I’ve also had recordings
  • 5:22 - 5:25
where I can record inside a class,
  • 5:25 - 5:29
record lectures, there’s accommodations for that.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    There’s also been,
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    programs on,
  • 5:31 - 5:34
where I can apply for a program online
  • 5:34 - 5:36
where it reads the book to me
  • 5:36 - 5:40
while I’m reaching the book as well,
  • 5:40 - 5:44
it’s called Learning Services I think it’s called,
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    or Learning Ally,
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    there you go.
  • 5:46 - 5:49
Learning Ally it reads the book to you
  • 5:49 - 5:51
while you’re reading off the book
  • 5:51 - 5:54
and there’s also a few other programs.
  • 5:54 - 5:57
Kurzweil as well that I’ve been using
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    that helps out a lot.
  • 6:01 - 6:04
[Courtney Holston] Counseling services helped me,
  • 6:04 - 6:08
figure out, what I need to take
  • 6:08 - 6:13
and to get to that main goal.
  • 6:13 - 6:18
[Sarah Krupa] They have enhanced my progress,
  • 6:18 - 6:19
    in a number of ways.
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    I would say that,
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    without their services
  • 6:23 - 6:26
I wouldn’t be where I am at right now.
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    It’s been a very encouraging
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    to have an entire team
  • 6:31 - 6:32
    behind me,
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    from tutoring,
  • 6:34 - 6:36
    to counseling supporting me through.
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    [Marc Anthony Amiscua] DSPS staff,
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    have helped me personally wise,
  • 6:41 - 6:45
with a lot more self-confidence and,
  • 6:45 - 6:50
in regards to any sort of tutorials or help,
  • 6:50 - 6:53
    in figuring out what to do in the future;
  • 6:53 - 6:58
how to go kind of with the pace that works out best,
  • 6:58 - 7:02
academically wise here at Napa Valley College
  • 7:02 - 7:05
    gearing towards my future.
  • 7:05 - 7:07
    especially going towards teaching,
  • 7:07 - 7:09
I want to become a teacher,
  • 7:09 - 7:14
and, being able to get that one step closer,
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    for academic goals
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    in regards to transferring
  • 7:18 - 7:20
but also getting my associates too as well.
  • 7:20 - 7:22
[Pascal Sanchez] It’s helped me focus on where I need,
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    keep record of what classes
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    to keep taking next;
  • 7:25 - 7:28
instead of me just choosing all these classes.
  • 7:28 - 7:29
    Not knowing where to go
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    but my counselor sets my,
  • 7:31 - 7:34
    my goal towards my goal
  • 7:34 - 7:36
    which is architecture and engineering;
  • 7:36 - 7:38
which is where I want to head to.
  • 7:46 - 7:49
[Angelina Borges] To transfer, mainly focus
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    and looking into Mills College.
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    So at the moment
  • 7:52 - 7:54
that is my goal right now.
  • 7:54 - 7:58
[Courtney Holston] I’m working towards my AAT degree,
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    in studio arts and
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    then I’m looking to transfer
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    to possibly Sac, Sacramento State
  • 8:05 - 8:09
    for a, liberal arts degree.
  • 8:09 - 8:13
[Shellye Ferguson] I’m want to transfer,
  • 8:13 - 8:16
I’m getting a transfer degree actually in psychology
  • 8:16 - 8:24
and obviously I want this to lead to a better job in my future.
  • 8:24 - 8:28
[Sarah Krupa] An associate’s degree in Administration of Justice
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    which is Criminal Justice.
  • 8:30 - 8:33
I plan to graduate this spring
  • 8:33 - 8:39
and, I’m currently interning with Napa County,
  • 8:39 - 8:42
    Napa County Probation specifically.
  • 8:42 - 8:45
I’d like to be a counselor at the juvenile hall
  • 8:45 - 8:48
and I’m hoping that the internship
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    leads me that way,
  • 8:50 - 8:54
where I can also work towards my BA.
  • 8:54 - 8:57
[Xavier Bianchi] I plan to transfer to a four year university
  • 8:57 - 8:59
and hopefully move on from that university
  • 8:59 - 9:01
to pursue a master’s degree as well.
  • 9:01 - 9:03
[Marc Anthony Amiscua] Get my associates degree
  • 9:03 - 9:05
and most likely my associates degree
  • 9:05 - 9:08
    in mathematics and natural sciences,
  • 9:08 - 9:11
gearing towards transferring to a four year college
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    or a program,
  • 9:13 - 9:16
    toward liberal arts studies.
  • 9:16 - 9:18
[Pascal Sanchez] Just to transfer to Fullerton
  • 9:18 - 9:19
    within, just as soon
  • 9:19 - 9:22
as I get my prerequisites which I feel
  • 9:22 - 9:26
is going to take me a long time but one step at a time.
