One Minute Changes (Guitar Lesson IM-132) How to play IF Stage 3

  • 0:11 - 0:15
Hi how you doin'? Justin here.
    Welcome to IM 132,
  • 0:15 - 0:18
which is the One Minute Changes
    for foundation Three.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
In this series of chord changes,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
we're gonna be timing ourselves for a minute,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
trying to do the chord changes as fast as we can
  • 0:25 - 0:28
between the E Major and Minor barre chord shapes,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
and the A shape Major chords.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
Now I know you've only just learned
    the A shape Major chords,
  • 0:34 - 0:35
and I know they're going to be a bit tricky,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
but that's kinda' part of the point here,
  • 0:37 - 0:38
to get you brain used to working
  • 0:38 - 0:41
and getting that new chord shape
under your fingers as quick as you can.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
We're not aiming for perfection here, of course,
  • 0:44 - 0:46
so if the B string is not quite ringing out perfectly
  • 0:46 - 0:50
then you can kind of live with it
    for a little while.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    But hopefully, your continuous practice
of your strum, pick out, and strum
  • 0:54 - 0:57
on the individual chords will kind of counteract with this
  • 0:57 - 0:59
and then, at the end of foundation three,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
you'll be able to jump to the chord quickly
  • 1:01 - 1:04
and get whole of the notes ringing out.
    That's the idea.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
So don't let it be too sloppy,
but don't be too fussy about it either,
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    that's really important.
  • 1:08 - 1:13
    Now the other thing,
when you're using this A shape barre chord,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
you'll find that the barre slips back a bit.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    Now I'm gonna go to a close-up
and just give you a couple of looks at it
  • 1:19 - 1:22
so you can see the way
that your hand kind of re-positions itself
  • 1:22 - 1:24
when you're changing between barre chords.
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    Lets do that now.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
The first chord change we're looking at
  • 1:28 - 1:34
is an A chord using an E shape,
changing to a D chord using an A shape.
  • 1:34 - 1:39
Now there's a couple of things here
that I just want you to see and be aware of.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
The first is the first finger.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
Now, you can see that the first finger is changing
    from covering all strings
  • 1:44 - 1:48
and being quite close to the barre,
    all the way along,
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    to the D chord,
where it's kind of angling out a little bit.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
It's because it's not functioning as a barre anymore.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
It doesn't need to be right along
next to the barre all the time,
  • 1:56 - 1:58
cause it's only hitting that one note, remember.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
The third finger is covering that little barre
and the thinnest string is muted.
  • 2:02 - 2:07
Now if you do that, what you'll find is that
your thumb can stay in more or less the same place,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    and you can see now
if you watch the bottom of my hand,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
my hand is kind of swinging,
    a bit like that.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
It's kind of pivoting if you like.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    There's the E, there's the D.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
And if you get used to that,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    you'll find that
you can do the chord changes very quickly.
  • 2:24 - 2:29
And that's this little pivot movement
that gets you from one to the other.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
You'll also notice here that the third finger
    is going from there,
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    and it's just kind of
little finger gets out of the way,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    third finger slides across,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
and then it's already in place.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
Sometimes it's got a bit of an angle on it as well,
  • 2:42 - 2:44
because of the way our hand is moving
  • 2:44 - 2:46
there's a slight angle of the third finger.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
Don't make it too much, that would be bad,
  • 2:48 - 2:52
cause it still has to be the closer
to the fret on the second string,
  • 2:52 - 2:54
the more likely you'll gonna have
to get a good note out of it.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
So it should be kind of square, you know.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
But it can be a little bit angled,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
in order to facilitate getting a nice fast chord change.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    . . .
  • 3:05 - 3:07
The other two fingers, of course,
    are just coming off.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
So they're there, then we don't need of them,
they're just sort of hanging around,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
you know, where ever they fill comfortable.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
Don't try to tuck them away like this,
    that would be really bad.
  • 3:14 - 3:18
So just be cool with that change,
    trying to get the swing.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
Of course remembering first finger as well
is muting the 6th string here.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
So when it goes back onto the 6th string,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
you have to relax it enough,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
that it kind of glides back over
    to cover the 6th string.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
And then as it comes down for the D,
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    it's kind of angling around
and slipping off the thicker string,
  • 3:32 - 3:37
and then it's just pressing the top of it
to keep the thicker string muted.
  • 3:40 - 3:46
The next chord change that I've recommended
    is F# to C#.
  • 3:46 - 3:52
F# of course is in the E shape,
and C# is in the A shape.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
Now the trick here with this one is getting the jump.
  • 3:54 - 3:58
And I always think of leading here
    with my third finger.
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    So when I'm on here,
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    I'm already thinking
where my third finger will go,
  • 4:02 - 4:04
and I'm hoping my first finger is going to follow.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
Rather than trying to lead with the barre.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
A lot of you have probably got into the habit
of looking where the barre will go,
  • 4:10 - 4:12
and then putting the shape down.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    Which is generally fine,
but remember the barre now is with the third finger.
  • 4:15 - 4:19
So I find it helpful to look at the third finger,
  • 4:19 - 4:21
where the third finger's gonna lead.
  • 4:21 - 4:24
Again, remembering that the barre of course
is going from that straight shape
  • 4:24 - 4:27
to allow to have that bit of an angle there,
  • 4:27 - 4:29
now that you can see with the first finger,
    that's OK.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    . . .
  • 4:32 - 4:37
Third on the list, we've got the chord B to D#.
  • 4:37 - 4:42
    . . .
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    This is an interesting one
  • 4:43 - 4:46
    because you'll find
that your thumb has to jump backwards.
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    And it's always more difficult
to jump backwards with your thumb.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
So be aware of what your thumb is doing there.
  • 4:53 - 4:57
It's a little bit like the barre chord movement
that we talked about earlier on,
  • 4:57 - 5:00
when we're playing the chord relaxed, shifting,
  • 5:00 - 5:03
and then with that chords changing then pressing again.
  • 5:03 - 5:07
So, most of the fingers are not really
    coming off the strings
  • 5:07 - 5:10
It's not like when we're doing changes
    to open chords
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    where they all come off
and then reform the new chord shape.
  • 5:13 - 5:18
We're kind of trying to keep them in contact
with the strings as much as we can.
  • 5:18 - 5:22
It'll help you keep your finger movement
to a minimum as well, if you're doing that.
  • 5:22 - 5:25
And it'll also help you keep the strings muted.
  • 5:25 - 5:32
    . . .
  • 5:32 - 5:37
It's that kind of being able to move them still
without getting to many open strings ringing out.
  • 5:38 - 5:44
The third chord change we're looking at is
    G minor to C.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    Nothing particularly difficult about that,
  • 5:46 - 5:49
it's just keeping the second finger out of the way.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    Nothing really too difficult there,
if you can do G to C,
  • 5:53 - 5:57
then G minor to C shouldn't be more difficult
  • 5:57 - 5:59
other than the fact that with the G minor
  • 5:59 - 6:03
you're gonna have to have that little bit of
    extra pressure on the barre.
  • 6:04 - 6:11
And the last one of the series,
we have here an Ab minor to an E,
  • 6:11 - 6:14
which is a lot further up the neck.
    It's quite an odd change.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    . . .
  • 6:16 - 6:18
It's just a big jump really, this one.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    . . .
  • 6:20 - 6:25
So again, think here about leading with the third finger
    when you're making the change.
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    Think here the barre,
making sure it's going on upside.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    So from the A,
    as we're moving backwards,
  • 6:30 - 6:33
we're thinking of getting that first finger on the side,
    nicely positioned.
  • 6:33 - 6:37
Trying to keep the first finger at least
in contact with the strings all the time.
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    Actually just think of it,
    looking at it now,
  • 6:40 - 6:43
it seems my third finger is staying in contact
with all of the strings as well.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
So, you can try that if you like.
  • 6:45 - 6:50
    I wouldn't be too convinced
that's exactly the method everyone should do.
  • 6:50 - 6:54
But just exactly what I'm doing now
is a really good thing to be doing
  • 6:54 - 6:57
    before you start pressurizing yourself
    with officially one minute changes.
  • 6:57 - 7:01
Just trying to get the chord change moving it
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    you know,
    watching how your hand's moving,
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    really a good idea.
  • 7:06 - 7:10
Well, there you have your one minute changes
    for foundation three.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    Please remember that,
if you find any particularly easy,
  • 7:12 - 7:16
to drop them and exchange them
for ones that you find really hard,
  • 7:16 - 7:19
cause you should always be now practicing
the things you find the hardest.
  • 7:19 - 7:24
Always practice what you can't do,
    don't practice what you can.
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    Get your timer out,
work on them as quickly as you can.
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    Remember, as I said before,
  • 7:28 - 7:31
be fussy, but not too fussy
about the quality of the chord,
  • 7:31 - 7:35
cause you've got your chord practice,
that you should be doing separately,
  • 7:35 - 7:40
which will work with this to give you, hopefully,
a fast good chord change by the end of it.
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    Have fun with that.
  • 7:41 - 7:43
I'll see you for another lesson sometime very soon.
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    Take care. Bye bye.
