24/26 HOW TO GROW UP - They Need Family Not Meetings

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    The Call of Jesus
  • 0:05 - 0:10
    Welcome to this lesson 24:
    How To Grow Up.
  • 0:10 - 0:14
Last time we talked about the different
spiritual levels we see in the Bible.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    We talked about being babies,
    newborn,
  • 0:18 - 0:21
how to grow up and become
    children in the faith,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
and then become parents in the faith.
  • 0:24 - 0:29
We need to go out and find
a person of peace, as Jesus is talking about,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    something we've looked at
in this series "The Call of Jesus".
  • 0:32 - 0:35
But when we find that person of peace
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    we need to know
how to share the gospel with them,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
so they can be truly born again.
  • 0:42 - 0:47
But, we also need to help them
    to grow up.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
We need to help them to become
    mature in Christ.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
Like in a family, what we see in a family
    is that...
  • 0:56 - 0:58
In a family there should be babies.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    In the natural family.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    But they should not remain
    as babies.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    They should grow up.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
And by time, they should, actually,
    grow up so much
  • 1:09 - 1:14
    that they leave the home
and go out and get their own family.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
And now we are not parents
    but grandparents.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
As it is in the natural,
God wanted to be in the spiritual.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
When I take a look at the church
today, I just want to say:
  • 1:26 - 1:31
It is sad to see how far away
    we have come from
  • 1:31 - 1:33
what God wants us to be,
  • 1:33 - 1:39
how few that are really growing up
    and seeing good fruit
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    in their everyday life.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
There are so many people today
    in churches who just,
  • 1:44 - 1:51
    sad to say, continue being
spiritual babies the rest of their life.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
Why? Why is it like that?
  • 1:54 - 1:57
Could it be that we lack
    discipleship?
  • 1:57 - 2:00
I believe that is one of it.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
But the truth is also that...
  • 2:04 - 2:10
    many people in the church
    are not born again yet.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
I want to read a quote here from my book
"The Call of Jesus" in this chapter.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
"When a person is truly born again,
you will see it in their life.
  • 2:20 - 2:25
There will be fruit in their life
that will show they are a new creation.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
When there is fruit in a person's life,
  • 2:28 - 2:32
they need milk so they can grow up
    and mature;
  • 2:32 - 2:37
however, if the fruit in not there,
that means they are not born again,
  • 2:37 - 2:41
    and they need something much
    stronger then milk."
  • 2:42 - 2:45
When a person is born again,
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    we looked at last time,
    that person needs milk.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
But if a person is not truly
    born again,
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    they need something
    much stronger then milk.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    What is that?
    Blood.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    The blood of Jesus.
They need to be born again.
  • 3:01 - 3:05
Because when they are born again,
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    the life is being transformed,
  • 3:08 - 3:13
    not from outside in,
    but from inside out.
  • 3:13 - 3:18
1 John 3:6-10 is saying this:
  • 3:18 - 3:21
"No one who lives in Him
    keeps on sinning.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
No one who continues to sin
has either seen Him or known Him.
  • 3:25 - 3:29
Dear children, do not let anyone
    lead you astray.
  • 3:29 - 3:34
The one who does what is right
is righteous, just as He is righteous.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
The one who does what is sinful
    is of the devil,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
because the devil has been sinning
    from the beginning.
  • 3:40 - 3:45
The reason the Son of God appeared
was to destroy the works of the devil.
  • 3:45 - 3:50
No one who is born of God will
    continue in sin,
  • 3:50 - 3:54
    because God's seed remains in them;
  • 3:54 - 3:59
    they cannot go on sinning,
because they have been born of God.
  • 3:59 - 4:04
This is how we know who's the children
    of God and who's the children of the devil;
  • 4:04 - 4:10
anyone who does not do what is right
    is not God's children,
  • 4:10 - 4:15
nor is anyone who does not love
    their brothers or sisters."
  • 4:15 - 4:20
    What we see here is...
the Bible is very, very clear
  • 4:20 - 4:25
that everyone who is truly born again
    do not go on sinning.
  • 4:25 - 4:31
The seed of God is inside of them
and they cannot go on sinning.
  • 4:31 - 4:36
We also read that they love their brothers,
    those who are born again.
  • 4:36 - 4:40
    If those things are missing
    in a person's life,
  • 4:40 - 4:41
if people are living in sin,
  • 4:41 - 4:46
if people don't have the love
    to be with other believers...
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    Why? Why is it missing?
  • 4:49 - 4:53
Could it be because they are not
    truly born again?
  • 4:53 - 4:57
You know we can know a tree
    by its fruit.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
And if this is not there,
  • 4:59 - 5:05
if the longing to live a holy life,
if the desire to love their brothers
  • 5:05 - 5:10
    and being with other people
is missing in a person's life,
  • 5:11 - 5:15
you cannot disciple a person like that
    into maturity. Why?
  • 5:16 - 5:19
Because they are not born again yet.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
And therefore, when we talk about
    how to grow children up,
  • 5:23 - 5:28
what we need to always start with
    is the gospel.
  • 5:28 - 5:32
We need to always go back to the gospel
    and keep it simple.
  • 5:32 - 5:36
Preach the gospel, even to those
    who come to churches,
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    even to those who come
    into your fellowships.
  • 5:39 - 5:46
Because if you have a person
and you see something is missing,
  • 5:47 - 5:52
what is missing is just revealing
    a deeper problem.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    And what is that?
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    That is the root.
  • 5:56 - 5:59
You know we can know a tree
    by its fruit.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
If a tree, for example, produces
    oranges,
  • 6:02 - 6:05
and you want the tree to produce
    apples instead,
  • 6:06 - 6:10
the solution is not to take down
    all the oranges
  • 6:10 - 6:14
    and tell the tree:
You have to stop producing oranges!
  • 6:14 - 6:20
    You need to start producing
apples! What is wrong with you, tree?
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    No, the tree just produces
    what it is.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    Orange tree produces oranges.
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    Apple tree produces apples.
  • 6:28 - 6:33
A tree produces what it is.
  • 6:33 - 6:35
The same is with a person.
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    If you have a person
    who is living in sin,
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    if you have a person
who is not longing for the fellowship,
  • 6:42 - 6:45
then I want to encourage you...
  • 6:45 - 6:49
before you go deep, deep, deep in
    and try to disciple them,
  • 6:49 - 6:53
    and draw them out, and:
Come on, you need to stop sinning.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
Come on, you need to come
    to the fellowship.
  • 6:55 - 6:56
    Come on, you need to...
  • 6:56 - 6:59
because you'll get exhausted in that,
  • 6:59 - 7:03
than rather take the time to sit down
with them and share the gospel.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    Because when people truly
    get that life... Hallelujah!
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    They don't need anyone
    around them to:
  • 7:09 - 7:13
Come on! You have to live holy!
Come on! You have to have the fellowship!
  • 7:13 - 7:14
    And I remember that.
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    I was 19 years old
when I gave my life to God.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
I was the first one in my family
who gave his life to God.
  • 7:22 - 7:26
I had no, like families, and many friends.
  • 7:26 - 7:30
I had one friend who was a Christian.
    I had no one else.
  • 7:30 - 7:35
    Right away, without even really
    being in church ever,
  • 7:36 - 7:39
    when I got born again,
    the first thing happened...
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    What was that?
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    It was what we read.
  • 7:42 - 7:47
One of the first things that
happened was I could not go on sinning.
  • 7:47 - 7:52
I could not. Like, when I did things
    I was used to do,
  • 7:52 - 7:56
that were sin, I just felt it inside of me.
  • 7:56 - 7:58
The seed of God was inside of me.
  • 7:58 - 8:00
I could not go on sinning.
  • 8:00 - 8:04
And I know for my sake,
I did not need a lifted finger and say:
  • 8:04 - 8:07
Hey, you are not allowed to do this.
You have to do this. You have to do this.
  • 8:07 - 8:11
No. I did not need it. Why?
Because the seed was inside of me.
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    God was there.
  • 8:13 - 8:14
    As we read before.
  • 8:14 - 8:21
Another thing was: I was longing
for fellowship with my new families.
  • 8:21 - 8:24
    I was longing for fellowship.
  • 8:25 - 8:29
A guy like me, who was born again,
when I was longing for fellowship,
  • 8:29 - 8:32
I needed more than just one day a week...
  • 8:32 - 8:36
to go in and just meet,
    Sunday was not enough.
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    I needed more.
  • 8:38 - 8:42
And I wanted to live holy,
but in the beginning I fell
  • 8:42 - 8:45
    and I did wrong things,
    and I felt condemned,
  • 8:45 - 8:48
and there I also needed somebody
    around me,
  • 8:48 - 8:51
more than one day a week.
  • 8:51 - 8:55
And in my life God gave me
    somebody.
  • 8:56 - 8:59
    He gave me my father-in-law
  • 8:59 - 9:03
    who became my spiritual father,
    who was there for me.
  • 9:03 - 9:08
    And my father-in-law helped me
    to grow up.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
He never sat down with me
    and said:
  • 9:14 - 9:17
Torben, now we will have a teaching.
This week we are talking about this,
  • 9:17 - 9:20
next week we are talking about this,
third week we are talking about this...
  • 9:20 - 9:25
    No, my teaching,
the teaching he gave me, milk he gave me,
  • 9:25 - 9:29
was on the couch, with him,
    sitting beside me.
  • 9:29 - 9:32
I was sitting there with my Bible,
    and I was hungry.
  • 9:32 - 9:35
And I asked a lot of questions:
What about this? What about this?
  • 9:35 - 9:37
What about this? What about this?
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    And when I was fighting
    he was always there.
  • 9:39 - 9:42
    When I was doubting and
asking questions - he was there.
  • 9:43 - 9:47
This is what a newborn believer needs.
  • 9:47 - 9:51
They don't need to just come to a meeting.
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    They need family.
  • 9:54 - 9:56
    They need 24/7...
  • 9:56 - 10:03
    somebody who is there,
who is ready to share life with them.
  • 10:03 - 10:07
And this is how we really see
children grow up and become strong.
  • 10:07 - 10:12
    In 1 Corinthians 4:14-16
    Paul is saying this:
  • 10:12 - 10:17
"I am writing this not to shame you
but to warn you as my dear children.
  • 10:17 - 10:21
Even if you had ten thousand
    guardians in Christ,
  • 10:21 - 10:24
you do not have many fathers,
  • 10:24 - 10:28
for in Jesus Christ I became
    your father through the gospel.
  • 10:28 - 10:31
Therefore I urge you to imitate me."
  • 10:32 - 10:37
There was many guardians, or many leaders,
let's say like that, in the church today.
  • 10:37 - 10:40
But there are not many fathers.
  • 10:40 - 10:43
Paul was really a father for
    some of those people,
  • 10:43 - 10:49
and I encourage you out there, when it comes
to how to grow people up in Christ,
  • 10:50 - 10:54
when a person is a newborn and
    experience Christ,
  • 10:54 - 10:58
they need more than to just be invited
    to a meeting.
  • 10:58 - 11:02
    They long for fellowship.
    They want to live holy.
  • 11:02 - 11:05
They need somebody who can just
    be there for them,
  • 11:05 - 11:08
    somebody who can share life
    with them,
  • 11:08 - 11:12
    somebody who can love them.
  • 11:12 - 11:16
They need more then just to be
    invited to a church.
  • 11:16 - 11:20
    They need to be invited
to a cup of coffee, or for a dinner.
  • 11:21 - 11:23
And this is what I encourage you
    to do.
  • 11:23 - 11:26
When you start to work with people...
  • 11:27 - 11:31
and you start to see people come to Christ,
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    open up your home.
  • 11:33 - 11:35
    Invite them for a dinner.
  • 11:35 - 11:39
Sit down with them in the sofa.
    Talk about life.
  • 11:39 - 11:45
And there answer some of those questions
people often don't get answered in the church.
  • 11:45 - 11:51
I know when I was a newborn believer
and sat in my father-in-law's to be house,
  • 11:53 - 11:55
he did not put up a teaching,
    as I said,
  • 11:55 - 11:59
    but he answered those questions
    I had in that moment.
  • 11:59 - 12:01
    Hey, I'm fighting with this.
    What about this?
  • 12:01 - 12:02
    What about this?
    What about this?
  • 12:02 - 12:05
And he gave me so much more,
    to have somebody
  • 12:05 - 12:08
    to answer those questions
    I had in that moment,
  • 12:08 - 12:12
than going to hear a sermon 45 minutes,
  • 12:12 - 12:15
    with something that was not
    working in my life.
  • 12:16 - 12:20
But I want to say, it is not always easy
    to find those right people,
  • 12:20 - 12:24
    people who are mature,
    who want to help people.
  • 12:25 - 12:28
It is not easy outside the church
    or inside the church.
  • 12:28 - 12:33
I remember some years ago, I was
in a city and I led some people to Christ.
  • 12:33 - 12:37
There was no church in that city,
but there was a small group
  • 12:37 - 12:41
    of Christians gathering.
    There were six Christians gathering.
  • 12:41 - 12:46
And I tried to take some of those
    new believers into that group,
  • 12:46 - 12:51
but it was not easy, because in that
small group there was six people,
  • 12:51 - 12:53
and when I looked at them, there were
    two who were amazing,
  • 12:53 - 12:58
who loved Jesus, amazing, on fire,
it just came out of them always.
  • 12:58 - 13:02
    Another two were more neutral,
    and like: who are they?
  • 13:03 - 13:07
They are good and not bad,
but they love Jesus, so it's fine.
  • 13:07 - 13:11
But then there were two that were
    worse poison ever.
  • 13:11 - 13:17
Two very religious people who just
take out every life out of a new believer.
  • 13:19 - 13:22
It was very difficult for me, because how
do I bring people to that small group,
  • 13:22 - 13:25
and I wanted them to connect
    with those two,
  • 13:25 - 13:28
    or maybe those two,
    but not with those two.
  • 13:28 - 13:30
    And it's not easy.
  • 13:30 - 13:36
    Since I had those experiences,
    I stopped just...
  • 13:37 - 13:39
    taking people to church,
  • 13:39 - 13:45
because I did never know who
    they will meet in church.
  • 13:45 - 13:47
    So, instead of just saying:
    come to church
  • 13:47 - 13:49
and let them connect with everyone,
  • 13:49 - 13:52
because one of the first one
    I really led to church,
  • 13:52 - 13:54
    she connected with wrong people
    in church,
  • 13:54 - 13:56
    people who were living lukewarm,
  • 13:56 - 14:00
and they ended up going to city,
and that girl fell away again,
  • 14:00 - 14:02
    because they were out drinking.
  • 14:03 - 14:05
We see so many things today.
  • 14:06 - 14:08
    It's better, instead of just
    leading people to church,
  • 14:08 - 14:12
to just lead them to one or two
    people who are on fire.
  • 14:12 - 14:15
And I hope that is you,
    that you are on fire.
  • 14:15 - 14:19
That you will take the time
    to meet with people.
  • 14:19 - 14:24
Or, if you cannot, than find somebody
else who live the life, who's on fire,
  • 14:24 - 14:29
and try to introduce those new believers
    to them.
  • 14:29 - 14:33
    Somebody who can help,
somebody who can take care of them,
  • 14:33 - 14:36
somebody who can help them grow up.
  • 14:37 - 14:41
And I believe this is how it should be
    for all of us.
  • 14:42 - 14:46
I know it's not always easy,
    because who to connect with,
  • 14:46 - 14:49
but I've also seen it again and again
    that God is in control.
  • 14:49 - 14:51
So, if you don't have anyone,
  • 14:51 - 14:55
then start to pray that God will send
the right one to those people.
  • 14:56 - 14:59
And this is what He did with me.
When I look at my own life,
  • 14:59 - 15:02
I did not have anyone who could help me,
who could take care of me,
  • 15:03 - 15:06
but then God gave me my father-in-law.
  • 15:06 - 15:10
    It was not just accident.
It was God who ordained it.
  • 15:11 - 15:13
It was God who took care of it.
  • 15:13 - 15:17
I remember one night we were
in a meeting, a prophetic meeting.
  • 15:18 - 15:24
A prophet called him up and said:
    you have one son.
  • 15:24 - 15:27
He said: No, I have three daughters.
    You have a son.
  • 15:27 - 15:29
    No, I have three daughters.
    You have a son.
  • 15:29 - 15:31
    No, I have three daughters.
    You have a son.
  • 15:31 - 15:36
He's like a son for you and your
job is to be there for your son.
  • 15:36 - 15:38
And he knew who he was
    talking about.
  • 15:38 - 15:40
    Me.
  • 15:40 - 15:45
So, God has called my father-in-law
    to be there for me.
  • 15:45 - 15:48
My father-in-law is not a big minister.
  • 15:48 - 15:52
    He's not somebody who's
speaking in churches and who's all over.
  • 15:52 - 15:56
This is not also what you need
and what other people out there need.
  • 15:56 - 16:02
We do not need a big minister who
doesn't have time to take care of people.
  • 16:02 - 16:04
We need people who have time.
  • 16:05 - 16:09
We need people who can just give
    what God has given them.
  • 16:09 - 16:13
And I share much more about that
in my book "The Call of Jesus",
  • 16:13 - 16:17
    where I talk about how
we can be there for other people.
  • 16:17 - 16:21
And if we don't have anyone ourselves,
    what we can do,
  • 16:21 - 16:25
and how we can pray and ask God
    to lead us to somebody.
  • 16:26 - 16:32
So I want to say this:
when we start to work with discipleship,
  • 16:32 - 16:36
the best discipleship is to become
    family and friends with people,
  • 16:36 - 16:39
    to walk with people,
    to share life with people.
  • 16:39 - 16:43
To be there especially for those
new people who come to faith.
  • 16:43 - 16:47
The best teaching how do you get
    people to grow up
  • 16:47 - 16:50
is just to sit down with them
in a sofa, over the coffee table,
  • 16:50 - 16:53
    listen to their life,
    listen to their story,
  • 16:53 - 16:56
listen to what they are fighting with
    right now,
  • 16:56 - 16:59
    what are they struggling with,
  • 16:59 - 17:01
    what questions do they have,
  • 17:01 - 17:05
what did they read in the Bible
during the week, they don't understand,
  • 17:05 - 17:08
and then be for them and
    answer their questions.
  • 17:08 - 17:11
    And then pray for them.
    And then help them.
  • 17:11 - 17:15
This is how we get people to grow up.
  • 17:15 - 17:20
Not to just invite them to a meeting
and give them 45 minutes of teaching.
  • 17:20 - 17:25
No. Invite them to your home.
    Go to their home.
  • 17:25 - 17:27
    Be there for them.
  • 17:27 - 17:30
    And I encourage you,
if you start to do that,
  • 17:30 - 17:33
if everyone start to do that,
    when we reach people,
  • 17:33 - 17:37
and we take the time, and again,
we don't need a big minister.
  • 17:37 - 17:41
You don't have to be a pastor
    who's doing all of it.
  • 17:41 - 17:43
It's something you and me can do,
    each of us.
  • 17:43 - 17:47
    We can help people.
We can take care of them.
  • 17:48 - 17:50
So this is how it is.
  • 17:50 - 17:54
    Be there. Love people.
Invest in them. Spend time with them.
  • 17:55 - 17:58
And this is how we get people to grow up.
  • 17:59 - 18:01
And then you will see fruit in their life.
  • 18:02 - 18:08
Next time I'm going to do a video here
    called "Dear Pastors and Leaders",
  • 18:08 - 18:12
because next time I want to talk to all of you
who are pastors and leaders out there.
  • 18:12 - 18:14
    I'm not against the church.
  • 18:15 - 18:17
But I want to challenge you.
  • 18:17 - 18:21
I want to challenge you to really
    take the call of Jesus
  • 18:21 - 18:23
and give it to the people in the church,
  • 18:23 - 18:27
and see a movement from God,
    there where you are.
  • 18:27 - 18:29
So, I look forward to see you next time.
  • 18:29 - 18:30
    Bye-bye!
  • 18:32 - 18:34
    The Call of Jesus
