Never Give Up Praying for Your Loved One's Salvation - Don Johnson

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    I want to share about
  • 0:02 - 0:04
how the Lord answered our prayer
  • 0:04 - 0:05
    for our oldest son.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
Many of you've heard this with James,
  • 0:07 - 0:12
    my oldest son.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    My oldest son,
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    he was a model child
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    until he turned 17.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
We thought he was a true Christian.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
He had made a profession of
    faith when he was young.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
He was a very obedient child,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    a very good child.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
He was the kind of boy that if we had
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    any visiting preacher or
    evangelist come over,
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    he would wash their car
  • 0:34 - 0:36
and try to serve them every way he could.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
We thought he was the real deal.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    But when 17 came,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
it was like all hell broke loose
  • 0:45 - 0:48
and he decided he wanted the world.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
And it became quickly manifest to us
  • 0:50 - 0:53
that he had just been pretending,
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    playing at this business.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
There may be some of you that
have been doing the same thing.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    You've just been pretending.
  • 0:58 - 1:04
Oh, we can be real good pretenders.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
We can play at this thing
  • 1:06 - 1:11
    and really fool even
    the closest people to us.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
It became manifest in James' rebellion.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
He began more and more his rebellion
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    and disobedience and stubbornness
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    was growing in manifestation.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    And our hearts were breaking.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
It came to the place where we finally
  • 1:23 - 1:25
had to say, "James, if you're going to
  • 1:25 - 1:28
not live by our rules and do what we say
  • 1:28 - 1:30
and submit yourself to our authority,
  • 1:30 - 1:31
you're going to have to move out."
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    He said, "I'm moving out."
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    It was a heartbreaking thing,
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    but sometimes you've
got to let go of folks.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
You've got to let go of your own family.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    In fact, God was teaching
    you let go of people.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    We let him go.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    He moved out.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
Things went from bad to worse in his life.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
I mean, he plummeted the depths, folks.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
He went off into a life
    of sin and rebellion.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    Drinking.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
Went through a bad marriage early.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    All of this totally contrary,
    and our hearts were breaking.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
And we were thinking at the time,
  • 2:04 - 2:05
and many parents are tempted to think
  • 2:05 - 2:07
when you've got a son or a daughter
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    that's out in rebellion,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    what have I done wrong?
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    Where did I mess up?
  • 2:12 - 2:14
What kind of inconsistency was there
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    that may have triggered this?
  • 2:17 - 2:19
So we had all this burden of thinking,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
not only the burden of our son
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    being out in sin,
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    but the burden of thinking,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
well, we haven't done things right
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    because we saw other families
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    that their children were
    walking in obedience
  • 2:30 - 2:32
and good and faithful and loving God.
  • 2:32 - 2:33
It was so heartbreaking to us
  • 2:33 - 2:36
that our oldest son, whom we had so much
  • 2:36 - 2:37
expectation and hope that he was
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    going in the right direction.
  • 2:39 - 2:45
He proved to be just an absolute rebel.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
My wife and I, I can't tell you
  • 2:47 - 2:50
how many hours that we spent
  • 2:50 - 2:54
for several years praying for him.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    Praying, fasting.
  • 2:56 - 3:00
My wife would spend whole nights up
  • 3:00 - 3:02
while James was off in Tennessee
  • 3:02 - 3:05
working on pipeline, living like hell.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
She would be so burdened and moved upon
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    because of particular dangers
  • 3:10 - 3:11
that James was in at the time.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
She would be praying for his deliverance
  • 3:14 - 3:16
and that the Lord would protect him
  • 3:16 - 3:17
and watch over him and save him
  • 3:17 - 3:22
    and bring him home.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
This rocked on for several years.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
    He was in mid-Tennessee.
  • 3:28 - 3:34
    This was about '96.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    One Sunday evening,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
I was sitting in the living room,
  • 3:39 - 3:40
and I told Mae, I said,
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    "Mae, I'm going to go
    out on the front porch
  • 3:44 - 3:47
and pray once more for James."
  • 3:47 - 3:49
I can remember it so well.
  • 3:49 - 3:50
I walked out on the front porch
  • 3:50 - 3:52
and I got on the right side of the porch
  • 3:52 - 3:54
where I could see the heavens,
  • 3:54 - 3:56
and I got down on my knees before God,
  • 3:56 - 4:02
    and I said, "Father, God,
    You are Lord over all,
  • 4:02 - 4:03
and You do as You please
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    and no man can command
You or tell You what to do.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
Lord, if You kill my own son
  • 4:08 - 4:10
and put him in hell tonight,
  • 4:10 - 4:12
You would be just in doing so.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    You have that right,
    but Lord, if You would,
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    would You save him?
  • 4:17 - 4:20
You could save him. Would You save him?"
  • 4:20 - 4:22
And the Lord spoke to my heart
  • 4:22 - 4:24
as clear as I've ever heard anything.
  • 4:24 - 4:29
    "I've heard your prayer."
  • 4:29 - 4:31
I came back in. I said, "Mama,
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    God's going to save James."
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    You remember it, Mae?
  • 4:36 - 4:41
    You remember it?
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    God's going to save James.
  • 4:43 - 4:48
    I don't know when and I don't know how.
  • 4:48 - 4:51
But the Lord's going to work.
  • 4:51 - 4:56
The next day at noon, the phone rang.
  • 4:56 - 4:58
At noon. We were both home,
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    in the living room.
  • 4:59 - 5:03
    Guess who was on the
    other end of the line?
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    James.
  • 5:06 - 5:10
"Daddy, would you pray for me?
  • 5:10 - 5:14
I've got to get right with God."
  • 5:14 - 5:19
    The next day!
  • 5:19 - 5:24
"I've got to get right with God.
  • 5:24 - 5:28
    Would you pray for me?
  • 5:28 - 5:33
I went out today and bought me a Bible.
  • 5:33 - 5:37
    And I've started reading it.
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    My life's falling apart.
  • 5:41 - 5:45
    I need the Lord.
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    Would you pray for me?"
  • 5:46 - 5:54
I said, "Sure, James. I'll pray for you."
  • 5:54 - 5:57
He called me back the next day.
  • 5:57 - 6:00
He said, "Daddy, the Lord hasn't saved me,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    but I'm reading the Scriptures."
  • 6:02 - 6:06
And he had met a girl over in Tennessee
  • 6:06 - 6:10
    which invited him to a
    charismatic-type church,
  • 6:10 - 6:11
    and he went to church.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
In fact, he'd gone to church
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    that particular past Sunday.
  • 6:15 - 6:19
    When the Lord started
    putting him under conviction,
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    he told her, he said,
  • 6:20 - 6:25
"I don't need this hooping and hollering,
  • 6:25 - 6:26
I need to go to a church
  • 6:26 - 6:32
    where somebody will tell me
    something I need to hear."
  • 6:32 - 6:33
See, he had been raised under
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    the preaching of the truth
  • 6:35 - 6:37
and he could discern the difference
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    between what was being preached
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    in this other group.
  • 6:41 - 6:45
    I said, "James, surely there's
    some place over there
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    that preaches the Gospel;
  • 6:47 - 6:50
    some place over there that
    you can hear the truth."
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    He said, "Yeah, that's
    what I told Shelly."
  • 6:52 - 6:56
He said, "We've got to find a
    church that preaches something."
  • 6:56 - 6:58
Sad thing, again, it's a burden.
  • 6:58 - 7:03
So, he said, "would you have the people,
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    Wednesday night, would you have
  • 7:05 - 7:06
a special prayer meeting for me
  • 7:06 - 7:08
that the Lord would save me?
  • 7:08 - 7:10
I want you to ask the people in the church
  • 7:10 - 7:11
    to pray for me."
  • 7:11 - 7:13
I said, "Sure, James, we'll pray for you.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    You just keep reading your
    Bible and seeking the Lord."
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    Because we both knew that
    this thing of being saved
  • 7:19 - 7:21
was not just saying a little prayer
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    and it was not going
    through an A-B-C solution,
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    that God had to save you;
  • 7:27 - 7:30
that God had to do a work in
    your life and change you.
  • 7:30 - 7:33
He'd gone through the little routine
  • 7:33 - 7:36
    and knew that that
    didn't work, as it were.
  • 7:36 - 7:38
He had to have God save him.
  • 7:38 - 7:40
    He said, "Pray for me."
  • 7:40 - 7:42
That Wednesday night in our prayer meeting
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    our flock had gathered.
  • 7:43 - 7:44
Here's what's so unusual, that day,
  • 7:44 - 7:46
we were in a study -
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    something pertaining to Christian life
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    and Christian living.
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    That particular day, the
    Lord moved upon me
  • 7:52 - 7:55
and gave me a message from 1 John 1:8-9
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    and I couldn't understand why.
  • 7:57 - 7:59
"If we say we have no sin,
    we deceive ourselves
  • 7:59 - 8:01
and the truth is not in us,
but if we confess our sins,
  • 8:01 - 8:04
    He is faithful and just
    to forgive us our sins
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    and to cleanse us from
    all unrighteousness."
  • 8:06 - 8:08
And the Lord just put upon me heavily
  • 8:08 - 8:10
a message on the forgiveness of sins,
  • 8:10 - 8:12
and how that if we'd be
    honest and faithful
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    to confess our sins,
  • 8:14 - 8:16
God was faithful to His Word
  • 8:16 - 8:17
    and would cleanse us
  • 8:17 - 8:18
regardless of what our sins were,
  • 8:18 - 8:20
regardless of how deeply wicked they were,
  • 8:20 - 8:23
    He'd just cleanse us for
    the sake of His Son,
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    the Lord Jesus.
  • 8:25 - 8:27
And I had that and I
    said I don't know why...
  • 8:27 - 8:29
but I'm going to preach it
  • 8:29 - 8:30
because that was what was on my heart.
  • 8:30 - 8:32
Well, I had just finished telling the people
  • 8:32 - 8:35
    that Wednesday afternoon,
  • 8:35 - 8:40
    "Folks, James called
    and is under conviction.
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    The Lord's dealing with him.
  • 8:42 - 8:44
And he wanted you to pray for him.
  • 8:44 - 8:45
    Praise the Lord!"
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    And they said, "James?"
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    People said, "James?"
  • 8:49 - 8:54
"You've got to be kidding! James?"
  • 8:54 - 8:58
"Wants us to pray for him?"
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    I said yeah, James.
  • 9:00 - 9:02
And I just no sooner shared
  • 9:02 - 9:04
the fact that he was under conviction
  • 9:04 - 9:08
and that he was trying to find a church.
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    I was still standing there.
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    We had had prayer.
  • 9:13 - 9:17
And in the front door walked James.
  • 9:17 - 9:20
He had driven 6 or 7 hours straight
  • 9:20 - 9:24
    to be in church with
    us that Wednesday night.
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    He came in the church.
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    He had long hair.
  • 9:28 - 9:29
    Looked rough.
  • 9:29 - 9:31
Had been living a rough life.
  • 9:31 - 9:33
He came in and sat down by his mama
  • 9:33 - 9:39
and put his arm around her.
  • 9:39 - 9:44
My heart just swelled with praise.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    It expanded with worship.
  • 9:46 - 9:51
    My heart was overjoyed.
    I couldn't hardly talk.
  • 9:51 - 9:53
But I poured out the message
  • 9:53 - 9:55
that God had given me on
    the forgiveness of sins.
  • 9:55 - 9:56
    Just a simple message.
  • 9:56 - 9:58
How God could forgive the deepest
  • 9:58 - 10:00
and darkest and ugliest of sins
  • 10:00 - 10:03
because He loved us so much
  • 10:03 - 10:06
that He offered His own Son in our place.
  • 10:06 - 10:08
And He was so pleased with the sacrifice
  • 10:08 - 10:10
and the suffering of His own dear Son
  • 10:10 - 10:12
that He could cleanse any sinner
  • 10:12 - 10:16
who would be honest and would come
  • 10:16 - 10:18
and lay his life before Him.
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    And James just looked
  • 10:20 - 10:22
    and I'll never forget
    the look on his face.
  • 10:22 - 10:24
He was like a starving man
  • 10:24 - 10:25
    wanting a piece of bread.
  • 10:25 - 10:27
He was like a thirsty man
  • 10:27 - 10:29
wanting a drink with all desperation.
  • 10:29 - 10:32
He just drank in every word.
  • 10:32 - 10:35
    When the message was over,
  • 10:35 - 10:37
he got up and began to
    hug everyone in the church
  • 10:37 - 10:39
    and say, "pray for me."
  • 10:39 - 10:40
    "Pray for me."
  • 10:40 - 10:41
He kept me up that night
  • 10:41 - 10:42
to the wee hours of the morning
  • 10:42 - 10:44
wanting to talk about how you could
  • 10:44 - 10:45
    know if you were forgiven,
  • 10:45 - 10:46
how you could know if you're saved.
  • 10:46 - 10:50
He wore me out. I was just exhausted.
  • 10:50 - 10:51
    I was so tired.
  • 10:51 - 10:52
    We finally went to bed.
  • 10:52 - 10:53
We got up the next morning,
  • 10:53 - 10:55
he had to go back to Tennessee -
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    it was a job-related thing.
  • 10:57 - 10:59
And he said the Lord hadn't saved him.
  • 10:59 - 11:00
We had prayer and he said,
  • 11:00 - 11:02
"Dad, keep on praying for me."
    I said, "I will."
  • 11:02 - 11:04
He said, "I'll keep on seeking the Lord."
  • 11:04 - 11:06
A few hours later, he called me.
  • 11:06 - 11:12
    He said, "Daddy, somewhere
    around Memphis, Tennessee,
  • 11:12 - 11:16
    the Lord saved me."
  • 11:16 - 11:18
    And he said when the
    Lord came into his life
  • 11:18 - 11:21
    and saved him and gave
    him peace and forgiveness,
  • 11:21 - 11:24
he had a stack of CD's on his dash -
  • 11:24 - 11:27
    worldly, wicked, rock & roll,
  • 11:27 - 11:30
    hellish, rebellious music.
  • 11:30 - 11:33
    He grabbed that whole stack
  • 11:33 - 11:44
and flung it out the window.
  • 11:44 - 11:48
Now that's not what saved him, folks.
  • 11:48 - 11:54
That's what he did because God saved him.
  • 11:54 - 11:57
The real proof in the pudding
  • 11:57 - 12:00
    was a few months later,
  • 12:00 - 12:02
    we had opportunity and time
  • 12:02 - 12:09
    to go over and visit
    with him in Tennessee.
  • 12:09 - 12:14
    He wasn't the same James.
  • 12:14 - 12:19
He was nothing like he had been before.
  • 12:19 - 12:21
    Old things have passed away.
  • 12:21 - 12:24
    All things have become new.
  • 12:24 - 12:28
The life of God shown in his soul.
  • 12:28 - 12:32
The countenance of peace was in his brow.
  • 12:32 - 12:35
The joy of the Lord was in his heart.
  • 12:35 - 12:40
    The high praises of
    God were upon his lips.
  • 12:40 - 12:42
Mama and Daddy, don't ever tire
  • 12:42 - 12:45
    of praying for your children.
  • 12:45 - 12:49
The last chapter's not written yet.
  • 12:49 - 12:52
    Keep calling.
  • 12:52 - 12:58
    Keep hoping.
  • 12:58 - 13:01
    Keep pleading.
  • 13:01 - 13:06
One day, you may have the fortune
  • 13:06 - 13:13
    to hear the word,
    "I've heard your prayer."
  • 13:13 - 13:15
    Praise God.
  • 13:15 - 13:17
I praise God for you people.
  • 13:17 - 13:21
I praise God for you, Bob and Clint.
  • 13:21 - 13:27
I thank the Lord for knowing you.
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    We may never meet again.
  • 13:29 - 13:31
This may be my last time at Sedalia.
  • 13:31 - 13:34
I may go home and fall
    over from a heart attack,
  • 13:34 - 13:38
    or you may too.
  • 13:38 - 13:40
We've got a great day coming.
  • 13:40 - 13:49
    We'll be together again.
  • 13:49 - 13:51
    Let me recommend to you
    if you're not a Christian,
  • 13:51 - 13:53
    get in on this.
  • 13:53 - 13:56
    Don't miss this.
  • 13:56 - 13:59
    Don't miss this great joy.
  • 13:59 - 14:04
Salvation can be yours today too.
  • 14:04 - 14:07
    Believe it.
  • 14:07 - 14:09
You can be forgiven this very day.
  • 14:09 - 14:12
You can leave this house today
  • 14:12 - 14:16
a new creature in Christ Jesus.
  • 14:16 - 14:21
    Bow your heart before Him.
  • 14:21 - 14:25
    Give yourself up to Him.
  • 14:25 - 14:29
Ask Him for what you need most.
  • 14:29 - 14:32
    See what He'll do.
  • 14:32 - 14:34
    Let's pray.
