-
Hi. How are you doing?
-
Justin here with another
-
And today, it is,
"Always ask why."
-
Now this is kind of
a big deal now
-
in this internet age
where there's so many
-
guitar lessons on YouTube
and on websites.
-
So, it seems like
everybody is an expert.
-
So, how is it the you can find out
what the truth is.
-
And it's kind of difficult.
-
You know, when you're learning it,
-
you know, I can see
through some stuff.
-
I think, "Eh. That really
doesn't make sense that."
-
But, as a student,
what are you going to do?
-
And your biggest tool
to find the truth
-
is the question, "Why?"
-
If somebody says that
you should do something
-
a certain way, ask, "Why?"
-
And if you keep asking, "Why?"
until you get an answer that
-
you're happy with,
you'll find your truth.
-
Now, different people can have
different opinions.
-
I have some really good friends
who I absolutely respect as teachers
-
and musicians who have
a different opinion on the way
-
people learn to me.
-
It doesn't matter.
They are not wrong.
-
It's just they've got
a different choice.
-
And now if they've got a logical
argument for their decisions
-
and their philosophy on it. OK.
-
But what you want to watch out for
is the guys that don't,
-
that just go, "Well you should
definitely use this finger
-
to do this scale."
"Why?"
-
"Well 'cause it's easier."
"Why?"
-
"Well, because that's what
my teacher showed me."
-
Eh. Eh. Fail. Why?
Well, because when you hold
-
your hand like that, you can see
that mechanically it seems
-
to make more sense.
-
Well, OK, that's kind of cool,
but then you might see
-
someone else who gives
a different argument,
-
and they both seem kind of right.
-
And the only way then is for
your to ask, "Why," for yourself.
-
You know, why am I going
to choose that one over that one?
-
And try and find the answer.
-
It's a really, really, powerful
tool. Really powerful tool.
-
You know. It probably, as
a guitar player and
-
a guitar teacher, it's the
scariest thing about
-
the internet, for me,
and the lessons thing,
-
'cause there really are some
absolute idiots out there,
-
preaching all sorts of rubbish
to do with playing.
-
You know. It's scary how stupid
some of these people are
-
and how illogical the arguments are
that they use.
-
They're easily destroyed
with the question, "Why?"
-
And that's why I think
it's so important that you guys
-
do it all the time.
-
If you come to one of my lessons,
and you're doing something
-
and I've said, "Oh, you really should
do it this way," ask, "Why?"
-
If I haven't explained it to you
in a lesson, get on the forum
-
and ask me, "Why?"
-
But don't just stick "Why?"
on all of the forum topics,
-
because I'll get grumpy and
[Indiscernible].
-
Ask a logical, happy, sensible
questions, "Why?"
-
Happy? It doesn't have to be happy,
just logical and sensible.
-
There's no need to be
stupid about it,
-
but just any time somebody
says something,
-
try and question it.
See if you can get to
-
the understanding
how and why
-
a particular thing works
and whether it applies
-
for you, because it really, really
is a big deal now for you guys
-
learning on your own.
-
you know, it's something
-
you should also be asking teachers
-
in the flesh, by the way.
-
If a teacher --
-
Just because someone is on the internet
-
or in the flesh doesn't make them
-
any more or less qualified.
-
If you're going every week for
-
your guitar lesson in your local music store,
-
and the guy is teaching you stuff
-
that seems a bit weird, start asking, "Why?"
-
"Oh - I think you should play the lowest note
-
of a G-chord with your nose."
-
"Why?"
-
"Because I like the smell of the 6th string."
-
[LAUGHING]
-
I'm kind of pushing myself now
-
for silly stories to make up about it.
-
But it's just --the base of it.
-
I'm sure most of you have got it now.
-
Is just ask, "Why?" all the time,
-
whenever you are learning something new,
-
if it doesn't make 100% logic to you, ask, "Why?"
-
and you'll get to the truth.
-
You'll get to your truth,
-
which is the most important truth.
-
Hope that kind of helps you
-
on your journey and bit,
-
and I'll see you for more lessons and stuff
-
very soon.
-
Take care of yourselves.
-
Bye-bye.
