What is "the flesh?" - Tim Conway

  • 0:11 - 0:13
    Eddie says, "I was meditating
  • 0:13 - 0:18
on our struggle with the flesh."
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Is this you, Eddie?
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    No? Different Eddie.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    "I was meditating on our
    struggle with the flesh,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
and came upon the thought of:
  • 0:28 - 0:31
did Adam and Eve have the flesh?
  • 0:31 - 0:35
I know the deceiver/serpent tempted Eve,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
but what I'm not sure about is whether
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Adam and Eve actually had a sinful flesh.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
They would have had to in my thinking
  • 0:43 - 0:45
due to the flesh taking over
  • 0:45 - 0:51
to disobey God and them sinning.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
I was just really wondering if flesh
  • 0:54 - 0:56
entered the world upon Adam's sin
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    or was flesh something that
    always had been there?
  • 1:00 - 1:03
My thoughts were that if they sinned,
  • 1:03 - 1:04
they must have lost the battle
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    of spirit and flesh.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
But then, that would put them in the ranks
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    of fallen man, wouldn't it?"
  • 1:12 - 1:14
You guys see what's being asked?
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    Basically the question is this:
  • 1:16 - 1:20
Did Adam and Eve have "the flesh"
  • 1:20 - 1:27
prior to their fall into sin?
  • 1:27 - 1:29
Well, the first thing we need to ask
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    is what's "the flesh"?
  • 1:31 - 1:33
In fact, the first thing that I would say
  • 1:33 - 1:37
is you folks know that the term "flesh"
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    is used more than one
    way in the Bible, right?
  • 1:40 - 1:45
In fact, it's used in more
    than just two ways.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
Let me give you a few examples.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
1 John 4:2, "By this you
    know the Spirit of God,
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    every spirit that
    confesses that Jesus Christ
  • 1:53 - 1:55
has come in the flesh is from God."
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    What does that mean?
  • 1:57 - 1:59
Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    What does that mean?
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    Right - physical body.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
He's come in a physical, human body.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
That doesn't mean that Jesus Christ
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    came in the sinful flesh
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    because He was without sin.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
And so, sometimes when flesh is used,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    obviously it has no connotation
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    or connection with sin, right?
  • 2:21 - 2:24
Because Christ had no connection with sin.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
He came in the likeness of sinful flesh,
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    but He was without sin.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    How about another usage?
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    Romans 1:3, "Jesus was
    descended from David
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    according to the flesh."
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    What does that mean?
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    According to what's physical.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    Again, it really directs
    back to what's physical.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    It doesn't have any
    connection with what's sinful.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    Luke 24:39, "Jesus says,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
'See My hands and My feet,
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    that it is I Myself;
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    touch Me and see,
  • 2:57 - 3:02
for a spirit does not have flesh and bones
  • 3:02 - 3:03
as you see that I have.'"
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    What does flesh mean there?
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    Flesh and bones?
  • 3:09 - 3:12
It means the soft part of our skin
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    and muscle and tissue.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    Right?
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    This is flesh.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
If I cut a piece off
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    and threw it down there,
  • 3:23 - 3:27
    it's a piece of flesh.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
Not necessarily connected with sin, right?
  • 3:31 - 3:33
I mean it's down there. It's not sinning.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
It's not nice, but it's not sinning.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    Right?
  • 3:39 - 3:42
How about this one? Luke 3:6,
  • 3:42 - 3:46
    "All flesh shall see
    the salvation of God."
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    What does that mean?
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    That doesn't mean that chunk
that's down there on the ground
  • 3:52 - 3:54
can see the salvation of God, right?
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    That's not speaking necessarily
  • 3:56 - 3:58
specifically about that which is sinful.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    There it just means mankind,
    humankind, right?
  • 4:01 - 4:05
See, it's really got a rather broad usage
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    in Scripture.
  • 4:08 - 4:13
    Hebrews 5:7 says,
"In the days of His flesh,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    Jesus offered up prayers
    and supplications."
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    What does it mean there?
  • 4:16 - 4:20
In the days of His flesh?
  • 4:20 - 4:22
It doesn't just mean His humanity,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    because He's human still.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
In the days of His flesh seems to be
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    His earthly humanity -
  • 4:28 - 4:30
when He was here on this earth.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    But then you have this,
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    Romans 8:13, "If you live
  • 4:33 - 4:38
according to the flesh, you will die."
  • 4:38 - 4:43
Now, we've got a usage here
  • 4:43 - 4:46
that seems to have to do with
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    that which is sinful,
  • 4:48 - 4:53
    that which is corrupt.
  • 4:53 - 4:54
"The mind that is set on the flesh
  • 4:54 - 4:57
is hostile to God." Romans 8:7.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    You see that again.
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    Galatians 5:19, "Now the works
    of the flesh are evident:
  • 5:01 - 5:05
    sexual immorality, impurity,
    sensuality..." and so on.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
So you have that usage of flesh
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    which obviously Eddie -
  • 5:09 - 5:11
that's what he's referring to, right?
  • 5:11 - 5:17
That which by nature is corrupt.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
Now let's go a little further
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    with our concept of flesh.
  • 5:21 - 5:25
    When a person is converted,
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    what's true about their relationship
  • 5:27 - 5:32
    to the flesh?
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    They battle with it.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
    So the battle isn't done
    when you're saved, right?
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    It's not done.
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    In fact, what would be
  • 5:40 - 5:42
maybe one of the most prominent verses
  • 5:42 - 5:49
that you could refer to that
    tells us such a thing?
  • 5:49 - 5:54
The one I'm thinking of is in 1 Peter.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    1 Peter 2:11, "Beloved, I urge you
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    as sojourners and exiles..."
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    So he's speaking to Christians.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
    "...To abstain from the
    passions of the flesh
  • 6:02 - 6:05
which wage war against your soul."
  • 6:05 - 6:09
    So basically there are
    passions of the flesh
  • 6:09 - 6:13
which wage a battle, a warfare,
  • 6:13 - 6:14
    against our soul.
  • 6:14 - 6:18
    So, just because you're saved,
  • 6:18 - 6:20
we don't lose the flesh. Why?
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    Because think about it,
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    flesh - now, see, there's
    a connection here.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
I talk about this - the flesh.
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    There's a connection between that
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    and what is sinful
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    because that's where it dwells.
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    You remember what Paul
    says in Romans 6:12?
  • 6:34 - 6:39
Sin seeks to reign in this mortal body.
  • 6:39 - 6:45
    This mortal body is where
    the corruption rests.
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    That's where the battle is.
  • 6:47 - 6:48
And that's why when we die
  • 6:48 - 6:53
and we cast off this corruption,
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    we're perfect. We're set free.
  • 6:56 - 7:00
There's no longer a flesh that wages war.
  • 7:00 - 7:03
But, what's something else we can say
  • 7:03 - 7:08
about the flesh when we're converted?
  • 7:08 - 7:13
I mean, we still battle, however,
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    what's true?
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    The flesh is massively subdued
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    when we come to Christ.
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    What might be a text
    I would refer to there?
  • 7:24 - 7:25
Well, let me give you three of them.
  • 7:25 - 7:29
    Romans 7:5, "While we
    were living in the flesh,
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    our sinful passions were
    aroused by the law,
  • 7:31 - 7:33
were at work in our members
    to bear fruit for death."
  • 7:33 - 7:36
While we were in the flesh...
  • 7:36 - 7:38
but we're not in the flesh anymore.
  • 7:38 - 7:41
In fact, you go on further.
  • 7:41 - 7:45
Romans 8:13, "If you live according
to the flesh, you will die."
  • 7:45 - 7:46
So what's true of every believer?
  • 7:46 - 7:48
They're not living according to the flesh.
  • 7:48 - 7:50
In fact, "by the Spirit, you put to death
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    the deeds of the body."
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    You do that, you'll live.
  • 7:54 - 7:56
Galatians 5:24, listen to this verse,
  • 7:56 - 7:58
"those who belong to Christ Jesus
  • 7:58 - 8:02
    have crucified the flesh
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    with its passions and desires."
  • 8:05 - 8:06
So here's the thing we can say,
  • 8:06 - 8:09
flesh has a lot of different meanings.
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    One of the meanings definitely
  • 8:10 - 8:15
    has to do with that
    part of our old selves,
  • 8:15 - 8:21
that part of this unredeemed flesh.
  • 8:21 - 8:24
Because that's the only part of
our old self that's still here -
  • 8:24 - 8:27
the inner man is a new man.
  • 8:27 - 8:29
This on the outside - this shell -
  • 8:29 - 8:36
this is the remnant of what I used to be.
  • 8:36 - 8:39
I still wage war with it,
  • 8:39 - 8:42
    but if I'm in Christ,
  • 8:42 - 8:44
the passions and desires of this flesh
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    have been crucified,
  • 8:46 - 8:48
which means I live above it.
  • 8:48 - 8:51
Even though it wages war, I live above it.
  • 8:51 - 8:54
Now yes, there may be periods
  • 8:54 - 8:57
when I fall to it, but as a whole,
  • 8:57 - 8:58
by the Spirit, I live above it.
  • 8:58 - 9:01
You see, the Spirit and the flesh
  • 9:01 - 9:02
are at war with each other,
  • 9:02 - 9:04
and when the Spirit comes in,
  • 9:04 - 9:06
the Spirit's far stronger than the flesh.
  • 9:06 - 9:08
And the Spirit will give me victory.
  • 9:08 - 9:10
And if that victory isn't happening,
  • 9:10 - 9:13
    Paul says you live according
    to the flesh, you die.
  • 9:13 - 9:17
By the Spirit, if you're putting
    it to death, you live.
  • 9:17 - 9:21
So there's that fact as well.
  • 9:21 - 9:24
    Now, here's the thing.
  • 9:24 - 9:29
    What's true of somebody
    who's living in the flesh?
  • 9:29 - 9:32
    Romans 8:7 says they're
    at enmity with God.
  • 9:32 - 9:38
It says they cannot keep the law.
  • 9:38 - 9:39
    Right?
  • 9:39 - 9:45
It says whoever is in the flesh will die.
  • 9:45 - 9:48
Now let me ask you this:
  • 9:48 - 9:50
Was the sentence of death upon Adam
  • 9:50 - 9:53
    before he committed
    the first transgression?
  • 9:53 - 9:57
    You see, if you're living
    according to the flesh;
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    if you're in the flesh,
  • 9:59 - 10:01
the sentence of death is upon you.
  • 10:01 - 10:04
I mean, listen to this again.
  • 10:04 - 10:06
    There in Romans 7.
  • 10:06 - 10:08
    It says, "While we were
    living in the flesh,
  • 10:08 - 10:10
our sinful passions aroused by the law
  • 10:10 - 10:12
were at work in our members
    to bear fruit for death."
  • 10:12 - 10:14
You see, if you're in the flesh,
  • 10:14 - 10:16
    it's bearing fruit for death.
  • 10:16 - 10:18
If you live according to the flesh,
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    you will die.
  • 10:19 - 10:21
The fact is, the sentence of death
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    was not upon Adam.
  • 10:24 - 10:27
It says those who are in
    the flesh can't please God.
  • 10:27 - 10:29
But you know what it says about Adam?
  • 10:29 - 10:31
It says that God created everything
  • 10:31 - 10:33
and looked at it and said what?
  • 10:33 - 10:35
It's good. Not that it's bad.
  • 10:35 - 10:37
    Not that it's corrupt.
  • 10:37 - 10:40
God didn't say death is already on you
  • 10:40 - 10:42
from the time I've created you.
  • 10:42 - 10:46
He says, "the day you eat
    thereof, you shall surely die."
  • 10:46 - 10:48
    So basically everything that's true
  • 10:48 - 10:50
    about a person that
    was living in the flesh
  • 10:50 - 10:53
    was not true of Adam.
  • 10:53 - 10:56
    Basically Adam was created
    in the image of who?
  • 10:56 - 10:58
    Of God.
  • 10:58 - 10:59
He was created in the image of God.
  • 10:59 - 11:03
God looked at him and said it's good.
  • 11:03 - 11:06
And in fact, there's an interesting text
  • 11:06 - 11:08
    in Ecclesiastes 7:29 that says,
  • 11:08 - 11:13
    "God made man upright."
  • 11:13 - 11:18
    Ecclesiastes 7:29.
  • 11:18 - 11:19
    But then the question comes,
  • 11:19 - 11:21
    well, if man was made good;
  • 11:21 - 11:24
    if man was made upright,
    how did he ever sin?
  • 11:24 - 11:26
    Right?
  • 11:26 - 11:27
Well, the fact is, Adam was created
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    with a free will.
  • 11:29 - 11:33
    He was given the ability
    to choose good or bad.
  • 11:33 - 11:36
    And he chose bad.
  • 11:36 - 11:37
    Now, you know what?
  • 11:37 - 11:43
    The Bible doesn't get
    into the fine details
  • 11:43 - 11:46
about how it was possible for a good being
  • 11:46 - 11:48
to come to the place where
    they determined to sin.
  • 11:48 - 11:50
    We don't know what happened,
  • 11:50 - 11:51
but I'll tell you what - you say,
  • 11:51 - 11:53
well, how did he ever sin?
  • 11:53 - 11:57
    Willingly. I'll guarantee you that.
  • 11:57 - 12:00
    I mean, Scripture says - Romans 5:16,
  • 12:00 - 12:02
    "that one man's sin..."
  • 12:02 - 12:04
It attributes that sin to that one man.
  • 12:04 - 12:06
    It's not God's fault.
  • 12:06 - 12:09
    It's that man's sin.
  • 12:09 - 12:11
    Romans 5:17, "Because of
    one man's trespass..."
  • 12:11 - 12:14
    Romans 5:19, "One
    man's disobedience..."
  • 12:14 - 12:16
    It was his disobedience.
    It was his trespass.
  • 12:16 - 12:19
It was his sin. He did it willingly.
  • 12:19 - 12:21
    He did it willfully.
  • 12:21 - 12:23
How does a good and upright man
  • 12:23 - 12:25
created in the image of God
  • 12:25 - 12:27
come to the place where he chooses sin?
  • 12:27 - 12:29
    Well, he did it willingly.
  • 12:29 - 12:30
    He did it willfully.
  • 12:30 - 12:32
    And at that point,
  • 12:32 - 12:34
    condemnation came upon men.
  • 12:34 - 12:35
    Death came upon men.
