How Far Can a Person Go As a False Convert? - Ask Pastor Tim

  • 0:06 - 0:08
"I would love for some help navigating
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    my Christian experience.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
My question is how far can a person
  • 0:13 - 0:16
really go as a false convert?"
  • 0:16 - 0:19
He's asking this question for this reason:
  • 0:19 - 0:21
"I've been reflecting on my own life,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
and I'm a bit confused about some things
  • 0:23 - 0:26
that might be evidences of salvation.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    I believe the Gospel,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
repented of my sin - or so I thought -
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    spent countless hours preaching
    the Gospel to people,
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    evangelizing,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
even street-preached a couple of times
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    overcoming much fear.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
It seemed like the Holy Spirit
    was working to some degree.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
I also had a deep sensitivity,
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    conviction over sin.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
I spent a lot of time in prayer
  • 0:46 - 0:48
by which I was also deeply affected.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
I wept over sin and for
    others to get saved.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
There seemed to be a real love for Christ,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
for the brethren, for the lost.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
I was doing my best to
    walk in obedience to God,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    though I suspect I wasn't wholehearted.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    I may have been holding
    back some secret idols.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
I also fought hard and had victory
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    over much sin like pornography,
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    much worldliness,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
though there were still a few things
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    that were an ongoing struggle
  • 1:13 - 1:14
that I continue to fight really hard
  • 1:14 - 1:17
like lust, pride, fear of man,
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    watching bad TV and movies
  • 1:19 - 1:22
which often got the better of me.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
Regardless, I made a lot of
    progress in sanctification.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
However, I ended up holding on
  • 1:27 - 1:30
and toying with one or two of those sins
  • 1:30 - 1:33
and fell into a very hardened heart
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    and lukewarmness
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and just deliberate unrepentant sin
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    and stopped feeling conviction.
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    My question is:
  • 1:40 - 1:44
Is it really possible to have such fruits
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    as I have had
  • 1:46 - 1:48
and still not have saving faith?
  • 1:48 - 1:52
How far can a person go in deception?
  • 1:52 - 1:54
If so, how is an unsaved man
  • 1:54 - 1:56
able to even feel that way
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    if not by the Spirit?
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    Any tips to help me
    understand my past experience?
  • 2:03 - 2:06
Could God have caused me to fall like this
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    so it would become
    clear that I'm not saved?
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    Giving some hope
  • 2:10 - 2:17
since only a lost person can be saved?
  • 2:17 - 2:19
I'm trying to seek the Lord
    now for salvation,
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    but my past experiences have
    been a cause of confusion.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    Hence, my question. Thanks."
  • 2:25 - 2:27
I just want to look at several texts.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
How far can a person go?
  • 2:30 - 2:35
He's asking this: how far can a
    person go in deception?
  • 2:35 - 2:38
How far can a person really go
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    as a false convert?
  • 2:41 - 2:42
I just want to look at several texts.
  • 2:42 - 2:47
The first one is Hebrews 6.
  • 2:47 - 2:52
    How far can they go?
  • 2:52 - 2:57
When I was a brand new convert,
  • 2:57 - 3:02
I read a Puritan book by Matthew Mead -
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    the Puritan Matthew Mead -
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    called "The Almost Christian Discovered."
  • 3:06 - 3:09
Anybody heard of that book before?
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    Have you ever read it?
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    As a brand new Christian,
  • 3:14 - 3:19
I found myself falling on my face
  • 3:19 - 3:22
on the floor often as I read that book,
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    pleading with the Lord
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    that if I wasn't genuine
  • 3:25 - 3:30
that He would search that out and show me
  • 3:30 - 3:34
because that book really rattled me.
  • 3:34 - 3:35
I had come to the Lord,
  • 3:35 - 3:38
but it had never occurred to me -
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    you know what?
  • 3:41 - 3:45
Because I was around such lost people,
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    I just assumed -
  • 3:46 - 3:48
because I was around such lost people
  • 3:48 - 3:53
    and around nominal Catholicism,
  • 3:53 - 3:55
I just thought if people claimed
  • 3:55 - 3:57
to be true Christians, they were.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    That's what I thought
    when I was first saved,
  • 3:59 - 4:00
so to come across that book,
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    it really jolted me.
  • 4:03 - 4:09
    Hebrews 6:4. Somebody
    begin reading right there.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
"For it is impossible in the case of those
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    who have once been enlightened..."
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    Tim: Okay.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    What he's going to say
  • 4:16 - 4:19
is it's impossible to renew unto
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    or to restore unto or
to bring back to a state
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    of repentance
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    somebody who has been -
  • 4:27 - 4:30
so this is a person who it's impossible
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    to be saved.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
So one thing we know for certain:
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    They've never been saved
  • 4:35 - 4:39
if it's impossible for them to be saved.
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    They've been enlightened.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
That was the first thing that was said.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    They have been enlightened.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    What does that mean?
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    Light.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    You know what it's like.
    It's dark outside.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
You come to the light, you can see things.
  • 4:54 - 4:56
If you guys go stand on my porch,
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    and the light's not on,
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    you can't see things.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
If I turn the light on - whoa!
  • 5:00 - 5:04
    All of a sudden, everything
    appears around you.
  • 5:04 - 5:09
Light we are told makes manifest.
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    What is it about light?
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    Enlightenment.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
It means I am brought to see
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    what I never saw before.
  • 5:17 - 5:20
So, how far can a person go?
  • 5:20 - 5:23
They can be exposed to preaching,
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    to the Word of God.
  • 5:24 - 5:28
They can be exposed to the light of truth
  • 5:28 - 5:32
and brought to a place that
    they never were before.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
What's the next thing said there?
  • 5:34 - 5:36
"...Who have tasted the heavenly gift."
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    Tim: Okay, isn't that amazing?
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    They've tasted.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
It's like the heavenly gift -
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    it's like they've taken salvation.
  • 5:47 - 5:50
They've put it in their mouth.
  • 5:50 - 5:54
    And they've rolled it
    around on their tongue.
  • 5:54 - 5:58
They've got the flavor of it.
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    Keep going.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
"...Who have shared in the Holy Spirit."
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    Tim: Okay.
  • 6:05 - 6:06
    You know what's interesting?
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    He said this:
  • 6:08 - 6:13
    "Is it really possible
    to have such fruits?"
  • 6:13 - 6:14
    Or he says this:
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    "How can an unsaved man
  • 6:16 - 6:19
be able to even feel that way
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    if not by the Spirit?"
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    Well, I would say this,
  • 6:24 - 6:26
it probably was by the Spirit.
  • 6:26 - 6:28
You say, what do you mean?
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    I'm saying this,
  • 6:29 - 6:36
the Spirit of God works in many people
  • 6:36 - 6:40
who come short of genuine salvation.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
The Word of God can be preached.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
    You know what you find
    oftentimes in times of revival?
  • 6:45 - 6:47
Or you find this even on a given Sunday.
  • 6:47 - 6:50
Somebody stands up and preaches a message.
  • 6:50 - 6:54
You get people who - they're moved.
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    They're swayed.
  • 6:56 - 6:57
    They're convicted.
  • 6:57 - 7:02
They feel some power in the preaching.
  • 7:02 - 7:06
    They go out and they're
    concerned for their souls.
  • 7:06 - 7:09
Their conscience has been made alive.
  • 7:09 - 7:11
    (incomplete thought)
  • 7:11 - 7:17
    They've participated in
    the work of the Spirit.
  • 7:17 - 7:20
It's possible for that to happen
  • 7:20 - 7:23
and truly be of the Spirit,
  • 7:23 - 7:26
and yet they get to a
    place where it's impossible
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    for them to repent.
  • 7:27 - 7:31
    Keep going.
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    "...And have tasted the goodness
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    of the Word of God
  • 7:35 - 7:37
and the powers of the age to come."
  • 7:37 - 7:40
Tim: See? They've tasted of the Word.
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    They've tasted the truths.
  • 7:41 - 7:47
    That's swirled around
    in their mouth as well.
  • 7:47 - 7:51
And even the world to come.
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    There's power.
  • 7:53 - 7:58
    They're actually experiencing the power
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    of the supernatural.
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    And not just any supernatural,
  • 8:02 - 8:04
this is actually the power of God
  • 8:04 - 8:07
    that they're being exposed to.
  • 8:07 - 8:09
    Something even that's representative
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    of the world to come.
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    There's exposure.
  • 8:15 - 8:17
    Keep going.
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    "...And then have fallen away."
  • 8:19 - 8:27
    Tim: Okay, now these
    people have fallen away.
  • 8:27 - 8:31
Here's the reality we looked at before.
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    When it's genuine salvation,
  • 8:34 - 8:41
    it can't be lost.
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    So these people -
  • 8:43 - 8:47
    it's impossible once they've tasted -
  • 8:47 - 8:52
    look, when it says
    that they've fallen away,
  • 8:52 - 8:55
you can't fall away from true salvation.
  • 8:55 - 8:57
Why? Because He puts His fear in us
  • 8:57 - 9:01
    that we not fall away;
  • 9:01 - 9:02
that we not go away from Him.
  • 9:02 - 9:05
Christ says if you come to Me,
  • 9:05 - 9:07
I will raise you up at the last day.
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    You see, these people,
  • 9:09 - 9:10
    (incomplete thought)
  • 9:10 - 9:14
    what they fell away from
    is not being saved.
  • 9:14 - 9:16
They've fallen away from the very things
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    that are described there.
  • 9:18 - 9:22
They've fallen away from the impact.
  • 9:22 - 9:25
    This is a person
  • 9:25 - 9:31
    who is exposed to truth.
  • 9:31 - 9:35
They may claim to believe the truth.
  • 9:35 - 9:36
    They may make a profession.
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    They may get baptized.
  • 9:38 - 9:40
    They may join the church.
  • 9:40 - 9:42
    They feel they've been impacted.
  • 9:42 - 9:45
    They feel they've been convicted.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
And look, based on that text,
  • 9:47 - 9:54
    it's real supernatural
    operations of the Spirit.
  • 9:54 - 9:57
But it comes short because they fall.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    They go away. Remember this:
  • 9:59 - 10:03
If you're sealed with the Spirit,
  • 10:03 - 10:06
He's the guarantee of your inheritance
  • 10:06 - 10:09
until you acquire possession of it.
  • 10:09 - 10:10
    It's a guarantee.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
These operations of the Spirit right here
  • 10:12 - 10:16
    fall short of that.
  • 10:16 - 10:19
    (incomplete thought)
  • 10:19 - 10:22
    All those things right there
  • 10:22 - 10:25
a person can have happen and come short.
  • 10:25 - 10:27
Let me take you somewhere else in Hebrews.
  • 10:27 - 10:34
    Turn to Hebrews 12:16.
  • 10:34 - 10:37
    This is Esau.
  • 10:37 - 10:41
Esau is another great example to look at
  • 10:41 - 10:44
as far as how far a person can go
  • 10:44 - 10:46
    and still come short.
  • 10:46 - 10:50
    Somebody read v. 16.
  • 10:50 - 10:52
"...That no one is sexually immoral
  • 10:52 - 10:53
    or unholy like Esau
  • 10:53 - 10:58
    who sold his birthright
    for a single meal."
  • 10:58 - 10:59
    Tim: Keep going.
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    "...For we know that afterward,
  • 11:01 - 11:04
when he desired to inherit the blessing,
  • 11:04 - 11:05
    he was rejected,
  • 11:05 - 11:07
for he found no chance to repent
  • 11:07 - 11:09
though he sought it with tears."
  • 11:09 - 11:12
    Tim: Here's the thing.
    We know he was lost.
  • 11:12 - 11:15
"Jacob I have loved; Esau I have hated."
  • 11:15 - 11:19
This text says he's an evil person.
  • 11:19 - 11:21
But what was true of him?
  • 11:21 - 11:24
I'll tell you two things that
can be true of a person
  • 11:24 - 11:27
    and yet they fall short.
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    You see them there.
  • 11:29 - 11:32
    You can repent of sorts.
  • 11:32 - 11:34
Remember, that's a change of mind.
  • 11:34 - 11:37
He had a change of mind
  • 11:37 - 11:40
where he easily cast away his birthright.
  • 11:40 - 11:43
He then later had a change of mind.
  • 11:43 - 11:45
    He wanted it back.
  • 11:45 - 11:48
In fact, he even wept tears.
  • 11:48 - 11:50
    A person can weep.
  • 11:50 - 11:54
A person can change their mind,
  • 11:54 - 11:56
    but fall short.
  • 11:56 - 11:58
I want you to see another one.
  • 11:58 - 12:04
    Turn to Luke 8.
  • 12:04 - 12:13
    Somebody read verse 13.
  • 12:13 - 12:15
"And the ones on the rock
  • 12:15 - 12:19
are those who when they heard the Word
  • 12:19 - 12:20
    received it with joy."
  • 12:20 - 12:22
Tim: Okay, you can have people
  • 12:22 - 12:26
    who hear the true Word.
  • 12:26 - 12:28
    Something has happened in them.
  • 12:28 - 12:31
The Spirit may be moving and convicting.
  • 12:31 - 12:34
They may see something in this
  • 12:34 - 12:36
that their eyes have been opened to -
  • 12:36 - 12:42
enlightenment like we saw in Hebrews 6.
  • 12:42 - 12:44
    They embrace it.
  • 12:44 - 12:47
    They receive it with joy,
  • 12:47 - 12:49
    but keep reading.
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    "...But these have no root.
  • 12:51 - 12:52
    They believe for awhile..."
  • 12:52 - 12:56
Tim: Notice that. They believe for awhile.
  • 12:56 - 12:59
    Very interesting.
  • 12:59 - 13:01
    Keep going.
  • 13:01 - 13:03
"And in time of testing fall away."
  • 13:03 - 13:04
    Tim: They fall away.
  • 13:04 - 13:06
So they weren't genuine. They had no root.
  • 13:06 - 13:08
    They never had any root.
  • 13:08 - 13:09
It's not like they were saved,
  • 13:09 - 13:11
    and then they weren't saved.
  • 13:11 - 13:13
They were defective from the beginning.
  • 13:13 - 13:14
    But here's the thing,
  • 13:14 - 13:16
    you can be enlightened.
  • 13:16 - 13:18
You can taste of the heavenly gift.
  • 13:18 - 13:26
You can taste of this good gift.
  • 13:26 - 13:29
    You can participate in
    the operations of the Spirit.
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    You can repent.
  • 13:31 - 13:32
    You can weep tears.
  • 13:32 - 13:34
    You can even believe.
  • 13:34 - 13:38
    You can receive gladly.
  • 13:38 - 13:42
You know what Matthew 7 says.
  • 13:42 - 13:43
    You can say, "Lord, Lord."
  • 13:43 - 13:45
You can know the right lingo.
  • 13:45 - 13:48
They say, "Lord, Lord." What did they do?
  • 13:48 - 13:50
    Well, we cast out demons,
  • 13:50 - 13:53
and we prophesied in Your name.
  • 13:53 - 13:56
We cast out demons in Your name.
  • 13:56 - 13:57
    In Your name!
  • 13:57 - 13:59
    We prophesied in Your name.
  • 13:59 - 14:01
We did many mighty works in Your name.
  • 14:01 - 14:04
    You remember Judas?
  • 14:04 - 14:07
    He undoubtedly cast out
    just as many demons
  • 14:07 - 14:12
and healed people as well as the others.
  • 14:12 - 14:16
You can do many mighty works in His name.
  • 14:16 - 14:21
He's not saying the people didn't do them.
  • 14:21 - 14:22
Many of these things can happen
  • 14:22 - 14:25
    and still people fall short.
  • 14:25 - 14:27
You know the church at Sardis?
  • 14:27 - 14:31
"You have a name that you're
    alive, but you're dead."
  • 14:31 - 14:34
    Oh, you can call yourself
    all the right names.
  • 14:34 - 14:35
    I'm a Christian.
  • 14:35 - 14:37
I'm a child of God. I'm born again.
  • 14:37 - 14:40
You can say all the right things.
  • 14:40 - 14:42
    You can say, "Lord, Lord."
  • 14:42 - 14:45
And He says it's not everybody
that says to Me, "Lord, Lord."
  • 14:45 - 14:48
You can have a name that you're alive,
  • 14:48 - 14:50
but the name is a lie.
  • 14:50 - 14:54
    People run around calling themselves
    (incomplete thought).
  • 14:54 - 14:58
    When Jesus comes, He's
going to set all names right.
  • 14:58 - 15:01
    He's going to put the
    right names on people.
  • 15:01 - 15:04
You know, there's a place there in fact,
  • 15:04 - 15:06
    Jesus talks about the people
    who say they're Jews,
  • 15:06 - 15:09
    but they're not. They lie.
  • 15:09 - 15:10
    Physically they were Jews,
  • 15:10 - 15:12
    but they weren't really Jews.
  • 15:12 - 15:15
And Jesus is going to set all names right.
  • 15:15 - 15:17
People love to call themselves by names.
  • 15:17 - 15:19
You can call yourself many names
  • 15:19 - 15:23
and still fall short of being genuine.
  • 15:23 - 15:28
So, I just want us to think.
  • 15:28 - 15:32
Okay, how does all of that
  • 15:32 - 15:35
    compare to the genuine?
  • 15:35 - 15:42
    And that's the thing.
  • 15:42 - 15:45
    And James preached through
    Philippians not long ago
  • 15:45 - 15:47
and I think I mentioned it last week
  • 15:47 - 15:49
or one of the last times.
  • 15:49 - 15:52
    But Philippians 3:3 -
  • 15:52 - 15:58
can anybody quote it besides James?
  • 15:58 - 16:01
    James, can you quote it?
  • 16:01 - 16:04
    "For we are the circumcision,
who worship by the Spirit of God
  • 16:04 - 16:07
and glory in Christ Jesus and
put no confidence in the flesh..."
  • 16:07 - 16:10
Tim: Yeah, worship in the Spirit.
  • 16:10 - 16:14
    So, this is the reality
  • 16:14 - 16:18
that their glory is in Christ.
  • 16:18 - 16:20
    They worship in the Spirit.
  • 16:20 - 16:23
They put no confidence in the flesh.
  • 16:23 - 16:26
    Their confidence is in Christ.
  • 16:26 - 16:29
    I mean, look, listen.
  • 16:29 - 16:32
    If somebody falls away
    because of persecution,
  • 16:32 - 16:35
    you know what?
  • 16:35 - 16:37
You know what they really believed?
  • 16:37 - 16:41
    They didn't believe that Jesus
was to be had at all costs.
  • 16:41 - 16:46
    What will make a man
    walk away from Christ?
  • 16:46 - 16:49
Only if he truly believes that Christ
  • 16:49 - 16:51
    isn't the most necessary thing.
  • 16:51 - 16:55
    Because as persecution goes up,
  • 16:55 - 16:58
why does it cause people to fall away?
  • 16:58 - 17:04
    Because they put suffering
    and Christ in the scale,
  • 17:04 - 17:08
and they say my own not suffering,
  • 17:08 - 17:10
    my own ease,
  • 17:10 - 17:14
    my own not being
    persecuted and feeling bad
  • 17:14 - 17:17
is more important than having Christ.
  • 17:17 - 17:20
    The reason the true believer
will not let go of Christ
  • 17:20 - 17:22
    is because he truly believes.
  • 17:22 - 17:24
    He believes he's got
    to have Christ or perish
  • 17:24 - 17:27
and he won't let go of Him for anything.
  • 17:27 - 17:28
    He glories in that.
  • 17:28 - 17:30
    That is his hope.
  • 17:30 - 17:33
He worships God in the Spirit.
  • 17:33 - 17:37
    That's what Christ said
    the Father's looking for.
  • 17:37 - 17:40
    Not worshiping in the flesh.
  • 17:40 - 17:42
You say, what do you mean?
  • 17:42 - 17:45
You know what worship in the flesh is?
  • 17:45 - 17:55
It's praying like the heathen do.
  • 17:55 - 17:57
    They think by their repetitions,
  • 17:57 - 18:02
    they're going to get God.
  • 18:02 - 18:05
Believing that because you pray -
  • 18:05 - 18:07
    it's trusting your prayer.
  • 18:07 - 18:09
Trusting the repetition of your prayer.
  • 18:09 - 18:11
It's trusting in what you do.
  • 18:11 - 18:14
The person who worships by the Spirit,
  • 18:14 - 18:16
    what's happening?
  • 18:16 - 18:17
    From the heart,
  • 18:17 - 18:20
    they delight in God.
  • 18:20 - 18:24
    From the heart, they admire
  • 18:24 - 18:26
    and they adore
  • 18:26 - 18:27
    and they're amazed
  • 18:27 - 18:29
    and they're in awe,
  • 18:29 - 18:32
    and they find God glorious
  • 18:32 - 18:35
and they're shaken by His majesty
  • 18:35 - 18:40
and by His purity and by His holiness.
  • 18:40 - 18:43
When they sing, there's a joy that comes.
  • 18:43 - 18:47
    You see, those who don't
    worship by the Spirit,
  • 18:47 - 18:50
    it's a work.
  • 18:50 - 18:53
    What's happening in the worship
  • 18:53 - 18:57
is it's an exercise that they go through
  • 18:57 - 19:00
    because they're
    accumulating points with God.
  • 19:00 - 19:04
Versus the worship that's of the Spirit -
  • 19:04 - 19:09
    it's when the Spirit
    takes the blinders off
  • 19:09 - 19:11
and allows us to see the beauty
  • 19:11 - 19:13
    and majesty of God
  • 19:13 - 19:16
and we worship Him from the heart level
  • 19:16 - 19:19
    because we're thankful,
  • 19:19 - 19:22
    because we find beauty.
  • 19:22 - 19:24
    We're legitimately thankful.
  • 19:24 - 19:27
We come to God thankful that He saved us
  • 19:27 - 19:30
based on the merits of Jesus Christ.
  • 19:30 - 19:31
    Not like the Catholic comes
  • 19:31 - 19:33
    who counts the beads.
  • 19:33 - 19:37
    What is bead counting?
  • 19:37 - 19:39
    Why? Why each one?
  • 19:39 - 19:41
    Because it's merit.
  • 19:41 - 19:43
I'm doing it to get something.
  • 19:43 - 19:46
So I count all these out. I'm rigorous.
  • 19:46 - 19:49
I walk on my knees till they bleed.
  • 19:49 - 19:51
    I told you guys this.
  • 19:51 - 19:52
I went to high school with a guy
  • 19:52 - 19:54
    that became a Jesuit priest.
  • 19:54 - 19:57
    He likes to tell people
that when he was a kid
  • 19:57 - 19:59
back when he was my friend -
  • 19:59 - 20:01
I grew up with this guy -
  • 20:01 - 20:04
that he put rocks in his shoes.
  • 20:04 - 20:06
    He likes to tell people.
  • 20:06 - 20:07
    Why?
  • 20:07 - 20:09
Because it's another notch in the belt
  • 20:09 - 20:11
    of his righteousness
  • 20:11 - 20:13
    that he's earning this merit.
  • 20:13 - 20:15
    That's what it's all about.
  • 20:15 - 20:16
What do you think purgatory is?
  • 20:16 - 20:19
Purgatory is where you go pay in the fire.
  • 20:19 - 20:22
    If you weren't able to
    pay well enough here
  • 20:22 - 20:24
    and get enough here
  • 20:24 - 20:25
    and do enough here,
  • 20:25 - 20:27
    then you pay more there.
  • 20:27 - 20:28
    It's all this merit system.
  • 20:28 - 20:32
When you worship God in the Spirit,
  • 20:32 - 20:34
    it's totally different
  • 20:34 - 20:37
    because what the Spirit
    does is exalts Christ.
  • 20:37 - 20:40
    You see there. There's appreciation
  • 20:40 - 20:41
    and there's thankfulness
  • 20:41 - 20:44
    that He has saved you.
  • 20:44 - 20:46
    And it's based on Him.
  • 20:46 - 20:48
    And there's thankfulness and gratefulness.
  • 20:48 - 20:50
And you don't put confidence in the flesh.
  • 20:50 - 20:52
Counting those beads is all flesh.
  • 20:52 - 20:54
It's what you can do in your own strength.
  • 20:54 - 20:57
But you see, we cast that away.
  • 20:57 - 20:58
    That's what Paul did.
  • 20:58 - 21:00
    That's what Philippians 3 is.
  • 21:00 - 21:02
    It's this great big list
    of all these things
  • 21:02 - 21:04
that he put his confidence in.
  • 21:04 - 21:05
    But you know what?
  • 21:05 - 21:09
    That's what it is to
    worship in the Spirit.
  • 21:09 - 21:12
The Spirit comes in and just devastates
  • 21:12 - 21:15
all the confidences that we formerly had.
  • 21:15 - 21:16
All the hopes we formerly had
  • 21:16 - 21:18
of how we were going to get to heaven -
  • 21:18 - 21:20
    He just devastates them all
  • 21:20 - 21:22
    until we're broken, we're
    empty, we're bankrupt,
  • 21:22 - 21:24
    and there's only one hope,
  • 21:24 - 21:27
and that's we glory in Christ Jesus.
  • 21:27 - 21:30
    Those three things stated
    there in Philippians 3:3.
  • 21:30 - 21:32
    That's the essence of it.
  • 21:32 - 21:35
    Sometimes people can feel discouraged
  • 21:35 - 21:38
or you feel like when I
    was a brand new convert
  • 21:38 - 21:39
    reading this Puritan book
  • 21:39 - 21:41
and falling on my face all the time.
  • 21:41 - 21:43
But the reality is even though
  • 21:43 - 21:45
so many things can be real of your life
  • 21:45 - 21:48
    and you fall short of
    being the real thing,
  • 21:48 - 21:50
    you never fall short
    of being the real thing
  • 21:50 - 21:54
    if your only confidence
    is in Jesus Christ.
  • 21:54 - 21:56
You will not be put to shame.
  • 21:56 - 21:58
No matter what else may happen,
  • 21:58 - 21:59
no matter whatever winds may blow,
  • 21:59 - 22:01
    whatever persecutions may come,
  • 22:01 - 22:03
    whatever attacks you may suffer,
  • 22:03 - 22:06
    whatever thoughts may
    run through your mind,
  • 22:06 - 22:07
    I'll tell you this -
  • 22:07 - 22:11
    if your sole confidence in
    being saved before God
  • 22:11 - 22:14
    rests in the merits,
    the death of Jesus Christ,
  • 22:14 - 22:16
    that's your only hope,
  • 22:16 - 22:18
    that's your only confidence,
  • 22:18 - 22:20
and you have none in the flesh -
  • 22:20 - 22:22
in your own doings, in your own worship,
  • 22:22 - 22:23
    in your own merit -
  • 22:23 - 22:26
    none in your own goodness,
  • 22:26 - 22:28
it's not there, it's only in Him,
  • 22:28 - 22:30
I'll guarantee you this: you are saved.
  • 22:30 - 22:31
    You are going to glory.
  • 22:31 - 22:36
    Scripture promises it.
  • 22:36 - 22:44
You have root if that's the case.
  • 22:44 - 22:49
So, this guy, I would say this to him.
  • 22:49 - 22:53
He said, "I made a lot
    of progress in sanctification."
  • 22:53 - 22:58
    But he says,
  • 22:58 - 23:01
    "I've ended up holding
on to one or two sins."
  • 23:01 - 23:05
He says, "...lust, pride, fear of man,
  • 23:05 - 23:08
    watching bad TV, bad movies...
  • 23:08 - 23:14
often gets the better of me."
  • 23:14 - 23:19
    I would say this,
  • 23:19 - 23:23
    that that isn't a good
    picture of sanctification.
  • 23:23 - 23:25
    He says, "I've made lots
    of progress in sanctification."
  • 23:25 - 23:30
I don't think that is lots of
    progress in sanctification likely.
  • 23:30 - 23:33
    If lust, pride, fear of
    man, watching bad TV
  • 23:33 - 23:37
    and bad movies are often
    getting the better of him,
  • 23:37 - 23:40
    that's not a good
    picture of sanctification.
  • 23:40 - 23:44
    And so, what I would
    say to people like this
  • 23:44 - 23:56
is if you look at your life
  • 23:56 - 24:03
and you recognize something's wrong -
  • 24:03 - 24:09
look, people are looking for the solution.
  • 24:09 - 24:10
They're looking for the magic formula.
  • 24:10 - 24:12
    But I'll tell you this,
  • 24:12 - 24:13
    if something's wrong,
  • 24:13 - 24:15
there's only One who can fix it,
  • 24:15 - 24:16
    and you can't.
  • 24:16 - 24:19
And the thing is you've got to be
  • 24:19 - 24:20
    like blind Bartimaeus
  • 24:20 - 24:23
where you cry out until He fixes it.
  • 24:23 - 24:26
You cry out until He sets your eyes right.
  • 24:26 - 24:27
    Because if you don't,
  • 24:27 - 24:29
if you just go back to your life,
  • 24:29 - 24:31
    go back to your sin,
  • 24:31 - 24:33
    go back to your religion,
  • 24:33 - 24:37
you just ignore these kinds of things,
  • 24:37 - 24:39
and you just let them go,
  • 24:39 - 24:42
he's going to drift deeper and deeper
  • 24:42 - 24:45
into what he describes as lukewarmness,
  • 24:45 - 24:48
    unrepentant sin,
  • 24:48 - 24:51
    stop feeling conviction,
  • 24:51 - 24:53
    hard heart.
  • 24:53 - 24:57
And you just wake up in hell.
  • 24:57 - 25:04
You cry out until the Lord heals you
  • 25:04 - 25:07
    or you perish.
  • 25:07 - 25:09
    If something's wrong,
  • 25:09 - 25:11
there's only one place to go.
  • 25:11 - 25:13
    It's not the church.
    The church doesn't heal you.
  • 25:13 - 25:16
It's not the pastors - any of them.
  • 25:16 - 25:18
    All of us together -
  • 25:18 - 25:20
all the pastors in our church,
  • 25:20 - 25:22
all the pastors from every church in town,
  • 25:22 - 25:23
    we can come together
  • 25:23 - 25:24
and we can all lay hands on you
  • 25:24 - 25:26
and we can't do anything for you.
  • 25:26 - 25:27
    We can pray for you,
  • 25:27 - 25:29
    but in the end, we're
    going to call upon Him
  • 25:29 - 25:31
    who is your only hope.
  • 25:31 - 25:33
    That's the only hope
    of anybody sitting here,
  • 25:33 - 25:35
    anybody listening.
  • 25:35 - 25:36
    If something's wrong,
  • 25:36 - 25:40
    if you're spiraling into sin,
  • 25:40 - 25:42
look, what we can say is this:
  • 25:42 - 25:46
Scripture says in no uncertain terms
  • 25:46 - 25:48
you've been raised to newness of life.
  • 25:48 - 25:51
Sin shall not have dominion over you.
  • 25:51 - 25:54
You need to reckon yourselves dead to sin.
  • 25:54 - 25:56
    The reality of Scripture is
  • 25:56 - 26:00
without holiness, you don't see the Lord.
  • 26:00 - 26:03
The reality is God is in the business
  • 26:03 - 26:06
    of transforming people
  • 26:06 - 26:08
into the image of Jesus Christ.
  • 26:08 - 26:10
And if that is not happening
  • 26:10 - 26:12
    in some stark, very real,
  • 26:12 - 26:15
    very recognizable fashion,
  • 26:15 - 26:16
    something is wrong.
  • 26:16 - 26:18
Like I say, if something is wrong,
  • 26:18 - 26:20
only Jesus can set it right.
  • 26:20 - 26:22
    Only He can heal this.
  • 26:22 - 26:24
Only He is the doctor to do
  • 26:24 - 26:27
the kind of surgery that's necessary
  • 26:27 - 26:30
    on the heart of people.
  • 26:30 - 26:32
You go to Him. You go to Him.
  • 26:32 - 26:35
You cry to Him. You look to Him.
  • 26:35 - 26:38
    Scripture says if you call
upon the name of the Lord
  • 26:38 - 26:40
    you will be saved.
  • 26:40 - 26:42
So you call. You call. You go there.
  • 26:42 - 26:44
    That is the only hope.
  • 26:44 - 26:48
There is no other place to direct people.
  • 26:48 - 26:51
I would give the Lord no rest
  • 26:51 - 26:53
    if you're in a position
    where you're uncertain.
  • 26:53 - 26:55
And whether there's such things happening
  • 26:55 - 26:57
in your life with regards to lukewarmness
  • 26:57 - 27:00
and hardness and spiraling into sin
  • 27:00 - 27:01
    and just not really knowing
  • 27:01 - 27:03
what it even means to worship the Lord
  • 27:03 - 27:06
in the Spirit and glory in Jesus Christ
  • 27:06 - 27:09
and to find all your hope there.
  • 27:09 - 27:11
    Give Him no rest.
  • 27:11 - 27:13
Look, hell is real and once you're there,
  • 27:13 - 27:15
    it's permanent. It's done. It's over.
  • 27:15 - 27:19
    And you're devastated forever.
  • 27:19 - 27:21
    You're damned.
  • 27:21 - 27:23
    You're destroyed.
  • 27:23 - 27:25
And there's no hope. Fire is real.
  • 27:25 - 27:28
You wouldn't cast yourself into a bonfire.
  • 27:28 - 27:30
Think of the lake of fire. It's real.
  • 27:30 - 27:32
You're going to be cast in there.
  • 27:32 - 27:35
You don't want to just play with your soul
  • 27:35 - 27:38
as though it's some cheap little toy,
  • 27:38 - 27:40
    something easily squandered.
  • 27:40 - 27:41
You don't want to do that.
  • 27:41 - 27:43
You lose your soul - Jesus said,
  • 27:43 - 27:46
what will a man give in
    exchange for his soul?
  • 27:46 - 27:48
    There's nothing.
  • 27:48 - 27:51
    You'll give everything in
    exchange for your soul.
  • 27:51 - 27:53
There's nothing to hold on to
  • 27:53 - 27:54
at the cost of your soul.
  • 27:54 - 27:58
    This sin that you think
    that you have to have?
  • 27:58 - 28:02
    You will curse yourself one
day for holding on to it
  • 28:02 - 28:03
if it costs you your soul
  • 28:03 - 28:06
    and you end up perishing.
  • 28:06 - 28:09
Especially when you were so close.
  • 28:09 - 28:12
If you perish after having sat
  • 28:12 - 28:14
    under the preaching
  • 28:14 - 28:17
that you people have sat under,
  • 28:17 - 28:19
    what a horror in that!
  • 28:19 - 28:20
    Can you imagine?
  • 28:20 - 28:23
It's one thing to end up in hell
  • 28:23 - 28:25
    and how devastating that is,
  • 28:25 - 28:26
    but can you imagine?
  • 28:26 - 28:29
Can you imagine if you came this close?
  • 28:29 - 28:32
It was like, wow, God put me in church
  • 28:32 - 28:35
    where they taught the truth
  • 28:35 - 28:37
    and I heard the truth
  • 28:37 - 28:38
    and I entertained the truth
  • 28:38 - 28:41
and I saw it from the pages of Scripture
  • 28:41 - 28:43
    and I heard Christ proclaimed
  • 28:43 - 28:45
and He was lifted up as the only hope.
  • 28:45 - 28:47
And you know there were times
  • 28:47 - 28:50
    I even experienced some of
that power of the Holy Spirit
  • 28:50 - 28:51
    and I felt convicted
  • 28:51 - 28:53
    and I came this close.
  • 28:53 - 28:55
And there were times I was even reaching.
  • 28:55 - 28:57
There were times I asked the Lord to save.
  • 28:57 - 28:59
Oh, I look back now and I recognize
  • 28:59 - 29:01
I wasn't totally committed to that.
  • 29:01 - 29:02
    I didn't totally want it.
  • 29:02 - 29:04
    I wasn't really being honest.
  • 29:04 - 29:06
    But there was some movements
  • 29:06 - 29:08
    and I was this close!
  • 29:08 - 29:11
Can you imagine if you got that close
  • 29:11 - 29:13
    to the Treasure?
  • 29:13 - 29:16
    To touching the Treasure
  • 29:16 - 29:17
    and then you turned
  • 29:17 - 29:19
and you chose your sin instead?
  • 29:19 - 29:21
    And you perished.
  • 29:21 - 29:24
    You will curse yourself forever.
  • 29:24 - 29:28
    You came that close.
  • 29:28 - 29:30
And you will hear those words.
  • 29:30 - 29:32
It is now going to be more tolerable
  • 29:32 - 29:36
    for Sodom than for you.
  • 29:36 - 29:42
    That's what Scripture says.
  • 29:42 - 29:45
Oh Father, I pray that there would be
  • 29:45 - 29:48
    some serious dealings with You
  • 29:48 - 29:51
by hopefully some of these young men
  • 29:51 - 29:54
who have written will hear these things
  • 29:54 - 29:59
    and others like them.
  • 29:59 - 30:01
    Lord, I pray,
  • 30:01 - 30:04
    have compassion upon sinners.
  • 30:04 - 30:07
We pray You'd bring revival to our land.
  • 30:07 - 30:09
    Bring a stirring.
  • 30:09 - 30:11
    Sweep people into Your kingdom.
  • 30:11 - 30:15
Cause salvation to fall down from above.
  • 30:15 - 30:17
We ask it in Christ's name, Amen.
