We Need To Talk About The Mass Murder In Japan

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    [INTRO]
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    On July 26th 1990,
  • 0:05 - 0:09
    the Americans with
    Disabilities Act, aka the ADA,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    was signed into law.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    And this past July 26th
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    would mark the 26th
    anniversary of the law.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
Now, those of us who need the law
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    would be celebrating the fact
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    that the anniversary has arrived.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    But, unfortunately for
those of us who need it,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    we are instead, in
    mourning, for the most part.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    Just outside Tokyo, Japan,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
in a facility that is supposed
  • 0:33 - 0:36
to take care of disabled people,
  • 0:36 - 0:41
    whether they be mentally ill,
    or have a physical disability,
  • 0:41 - 0:45
a man who was a former
    employee at the facility
  • 0:45 - 0:50
    ended up murdering 19
    patients, and injuring 26 more.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    He turned himself in not
    too long after it happened.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    And he felt no remorse
for what he did at all.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    In fact,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
in a letter that he wrote
    to the Japanese Parliament,
  • 0:59 - 1:03
he wrote that he believes that
the world would be better off
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    without having disabled people,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    that disabled people would
    be better off not living,
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    and that disabled people
    should be euthanized.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
He said that he had plans
  • 1:12 - 1:14
to kill a certain amount of people,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
and once he killed that many people
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    he would turn himself
    into the Japanese police.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
And all I could think about
    when I hear this story,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    is, "What the hell?"
  • 1:23 - 1:27
We covered it at DTV News and
    I just couldn't believe it.
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    What's even more unfortunate
  • 1:28 - 1:31
is the lack of real media coverage.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    On CNN and stuff there's
    been a little mention
  • 1:34 - 1:36
here and there, but other than that,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    there hasn't been a whole
    lot of talk about it.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
On social media there really hasn't been
  • 1:40 - 1:41
a whole lot of talk about it
  • 1:41 - 1:45
    outside of the mental health
    and disabled community,
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    which is a bit unfortunate,
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    because disabled people
    are a large minority
  • 1:50 - 1:55
and we don't get added into
    the conversation a whole lot.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    My friend, Annie,
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    who I mentioned once or
    twice on this channel,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
has made her own response video,
  • 2:00 - 2:01
as well as a written response.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
I will link everything down below
  • 2:03 - 2:04
so you can go check it out.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
And all I can think about
  • 2:05 - 2:09
is how disturbing this whole incident is.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    Obviously murder is very disturbing,
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    but when you think about
    the fact that this guy
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    was someone who worked at
    the facility for many years,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    and that these people
    trusted him with their lives,
  • 2:20 - 2:24
their life gets taken away by this one man
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    that was supposed to
    be taking care of them
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    while he worked there.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
Oh my God, I just don't
    understand it, I really don't.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
And it's another thing when this person
  • 2:32 - 2:35
is writing to the Japanese Parliament
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    and saying that our
    lives aren't worth living
  • 2:39 - 2:43
    and that we should be
euthanized and what have you, like.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    There's also
    another written response
  • 2:44 - 2:46
that is called My Life is Worth Living
  • 2:46 - 2:48
or something along the lines of that.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
If I can find it, I will
also put that link down below
  • 2:51 - 2:52
so you can take a look at it.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    As I mentioned before
    this is a conversation
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    that doesn't get really
    talked about a lot.
  • 2:56 - 3:00
    Other events that happen, they
    get worldwide media coverage
  • 3:00 - 3:02
and a lot of people on social
    media talking about it,
  • 3:02 - 3:04
and this is just one of those incidents
  • 3:04 - 3:07
where people are very, very quiet,
  • 3:07 - 3:09
and it's not necessarily their fault.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
This is another one of those news stories
  • 3:11 - 3:13
that just doesn't get a lot of coverage
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    for whatever reason.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    And I think it's important
    that we talk about it.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
So, there is a hashtag that's
    going around on Twitter,
  • 3:21 - 3:23
which is this one right here.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    So, if there's any
    stories that you've seen,
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    anything written, anything visual,
  • 3:27 - 3:29
you can make a Tweet about that
  • 3:29 - 3:31
or talk about it on Facebook.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    Disabled people with various disabilities
  • 3:34 - 3:35
do need to be talked about
  • 3:35 - 3:37
instead of being swept under the rug.
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    In the video after this
  • 3:38 - 3:41
I will also be talking about
    a deaf couple in Mississippi
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    who had their home invaded
  • 3:43 - 3:46
and they were beaten by the suspects,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    so stay tuned for that.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
If you want to follow me
on all of my social media,
  • 3:50 - 3:51
the links to that will be down below.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    If you want to support
    me monthly on Patreon,
  • 3:54 - 3:56
a link to that will also be down below.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
I upload videos every Monday and Thursday,
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    unless otherwise stated.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
And I will see you later.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    Bye.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
