    I heard about a high school in Chicago

    where students had to pass
    a certain number of courses to graduate,

    and if they didn't pass a course,
    they got the grade "Not Yet."

    And I thought that was fantastic,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    because if you get a failing grade,
    you think, I'm nothing, I'm nowhere.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    But if you get the grade "Not Yet",
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    you understand that
    you're on a learning curve.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    It gives you a path into the future.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    "Not Yet" also gave me insight
  • 0:36 - 0:40
    into a critical event early in my career,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    a real turning point.
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    I wanted to see
  • 0:44 - 0:50
    how children coped
    with challenge and difficulty,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    so I gave 10-year-olds
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    problems that were
    slightly too hard for them.
  • 0:57 - 1:02
    Some of them reacted
    in a shockingly positive way.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    They said things like,
    "I love a challenge,"
  • 1:06 - 1:11
    or, "You know, I was hoping
    this would be informative."
  • 1:12 - 1:18
    They understood that their abilities
    could be developed.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    They had what I call a growth mindset.
  • 1:22 - 1:27
    But other students felt
    it was tragic, catastrophic.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    From their more fixed mindset perspective,
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    their intelligence
    had been up for judgment,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    and they failed.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
    Instead of luxuriating
    in the power of yet,
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    they were gripped in the tyranny of now.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    So what do they do next?
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    I'll tell you what they do next.
  • 1:52 - 1:58
    In one study, they told us
    they would probably cheat the next time
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    instead of studying more
    if they failed a test.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    In another study, after a failure,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    they looked for someone
    who did worse than they did
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    so they could feel really
    good about themselves.
  • 2:13 - 2:19
    And in study after study,
    they have run from difficulty.
  • 2:19 - 2:25
    Scientists measured
    the electrical activity from the brain
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    as students confronted an error.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
    On the left, you see
    the fixed-mindset students.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    There's hardly any activity.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    They run from the error.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    They don't engage with it.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    But on the right, you have the students
    with the growth mindset,
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    the idea that abilities can be developed.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    They engage deeply.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    Their brain is on fire with yet.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    They engage deeply.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    They process the error.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    They learn from it and they correct it.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    How are we raising our children?
  • 3:05 - 3:09
    Are we raising them
    for now instead of yet?
  • 3:10 - 3:15
    Are we raising kids
    who are obsessed with getting As?
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    Are we raising kids who don't know
    how to dream big dreams?
  • 3:20 - 3:27
    Their biggest goal is getting the next A,
    or the next test score?
  • 3:27 - 3:34
    And are they carrying this need
    for constant validation with them
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    into their future lives?
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    Maybe, because employers
    are coming to me and saying,
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    "We have already raised a generation
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    of young workers
    who can't get through the day
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    without an award."
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    So what can we do?
  • 3:53 - 3:57
    How can we build that bridge to yet?
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    Here are some things we can do.
  • 3:59 - 4:03
    First of all, we can praise wisely,
  • 4:03 - 4:07
    not praising intelligence or talent.
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    That has failed.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    Don't do that anymore.
  • 4:10 - 4:15
    But praising the process
    that kids engage in,
  • 4:15 - 4:19
    their effort, their strategies,
    their focus, their perseverance,
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    their improvement.
  • 4:21 - 4:27
    This process praise creates kids
    who are hardy and resilient.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    There are other ways to reward yet.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    We recently teamed up with game scientists
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    from the University of Washington
  • 4:37 - 4:42
    to create a new online math game
    that rewarded yet.
  • 4:42 - 4:48
    In this game, students were rewarded
    for effort, strategy and progress.
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    The usual math game
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    rewards you for getting answers
    right, right now,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    but this game rewarded process.
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    And we got more effort,
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    more strategies,
  • 5:03 - 5:07
    more engagement
    over longer periods of time,
  • 5:07 - 5:13
    and more perseverance when they hit
    really, really hard problems.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    Just the words "yet"
    or "not yet," we're finding,
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    give kids greater confidence,
  • 5:21 - 5:27
    give them a path into the future
    that creates greater persistence.
  • 5:27 - 5:32
    And we can actually
    change students' mindsets.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    In one study, we taught them
  • 5:35 - 5:40
    that every time they push out
    of their comfort zone
  • 5:40 - 5:43
    to learn something new and difficult,
  • 5:43 - 5:49
    the neurons in their brain
    can form new, stronger connections,
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    and over time, they can get smarter.
  • 5:52 - 5:55
    Look what happened: In this study,
  • 5:55 - 5:59
    students who were not taught
    this growth mindset
  • 5:59 - 6:04
    continued to show declining grades
    over this difficult school transition,
  • 6:04 - 6:11
    but those who were taught this lesson
    showed a sharp rebound in their grades.
  • 6:11 - 6:17
    We have shown this now,
    this kind of improvement,
  • 6:17 - 6:23
    with thousands and thousands of kids,
    especially struggling students.
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    So let's talk about equality.
  • 6:28 - 6:33
    In our country,
    there are groups of students
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    who chronically underperform,
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    for example, children in inner cities,
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    or children on Native American
    reservations.
  • 6:42 - 6:46
    And they've done so poorly for so long
  • 6:46 - 6:49
    that many people think it's inevitable.
  • 6:49 - 6:55
    But when educators create
    growth mindset classrooms
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    steeped in yet,
  • 6:58 - 7:01
    equality happens.
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    And here are just a few examples.
  • 7:05 - 7:11
    In one year, a kindergarten class
    in Harlem, New York
  • 7:11 - 7:15
    scored in the 95th percentile
  • 7:15 - 7:19
    on the national achievement test.
  • 7:19 - 7:23
    Many of those kids could not hold a pencil
  • 7:23 - 7:26
    when they arrived at school.
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    In one year,
  • 7:29 - 7:33
    fourth-grade students
    in the South Bronx, way behind,
  • 7:33 - 7:40
    became the number one fourth-grade class
    in the state of New York
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    on the state math test.
  • 7:43 - 7:47
    In a year, to a year and a half,
  • 7:47 - 7:53
    Native American students
    in a school on a reservation
  • 7:53 - 7:59
    went from the bottom
    of their district to the top,
  • 8:00 - 8:05
    and that district included
    affluent sections of Seattle.
  • 8:05 - 8:12
    So the Native kids
    outdid the Microsoft kids.
  • 8:13 - 8:20
    This happened because the meaning
    of effort and difficulty were transformed.
  • 8:21 - 8:25
    Before, effort and difficulty
  • 8:25 - 8:30
    made them feel dumb,
    made them feel like giving up,
  • 8:30 - 8:34
    but now, effort and difficulty,
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    that's when their neurons
    are making new connections,
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    stronger connections.
  • 8:39 - 8:42
    That's when they're getting smarter.
  • 8:43 - 8:48
    I received a letter recently
    from a 13-year-old boy.
  • 8:48 - 8:52
    He said, "Dear Professor Dweck,
  • 8:52 - 8:59
    I appreciate that your writing
    is based on solid scientific research,
  • 8:59 - 9:04
    and that's why I decided
    to put it into practice.
  • 9:04 - 9:08
    I put more effort into my schoolwork,
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    into my relationship with my family,
  • 9:11 - 9:15
    and into my relationship
    with kids at school,
  • 9:15 - 9:22
    and I experienced great improvement
    in all of those areas.
  • 9:22 - 9:27
    I now realize I've wasted
    most of my life."

    Let's not waste any more lives,
  • 9:35 - 9:39
    because once we know
  • 9:39 - 9:44
    that abilities are capable of such growth,
  • 9:44 - 9:51
    it becomes a basic human right
    for children, all children,
  • 9:51 - 9:57
    to live in places that create that growth,
  • 9:57 - 10:02
    to live in places filled with "yet".
