Machine Learning
-
0:00 - 0:04This Fall quarter, Stanford University will be offering online for free
-
0:04 - 0:06the Machine Learning course that I teach.
-
0:06 - 0:10Machine Learning has a typical enrolment of 350 students in Stanford
-
0:10 - 0:13and this is one of the most popular courses offered by the Computer science department.
-
0:13 - 0:17Over 200'000 people have watched my Machine Learning lectures on YouTube.
-
0:17 - 0:21Based on this popularity, this year, we're doing something completely new:
-
0:21 - 0:25We're not just showing you videos, we're inviting you to sign up for
-
0:25 - 0:27actively participating and take this Stanford class.
-
0:27 - 0:31What is Machine Learning? You probably use it dozens of times a day,
-
0:31 - 0:32without even knowing it.
-
0:32 - 0:35Each time you do a web search on Google or Bing,
-
0:35 - 0:40that works so well because their machine learning software has figured out how to rank webpages.
-
0:40 - 0:44When Facebook or Apple's photo application recognizes your friends and your pictures,
-
0:44 - 0:46that's also machine learning.
-
0:46 - 0:49Each time you read your email and the spam filter saves you
-
0:49 - 0:51from having to wade through tons of spam,
-
0:51 - 0:56again, that's because your computer has learned to distinguish spam from non-spam email.
-
0:57 - 0:58So, that's machine learning.
-
0:58 - 1:02It's the science of getting computers to learn without being explicitly programmed.
-
1:02 - 1:07One of the research projects that I'm working on is getting robots to tidy the house.
-
1:07 - 1:08How do you go about doing that?
-
1:08 - 1:13Well, what you can do is have the robot watch you demonstrate the task, and learn from that.
-
1:13 - 1:17The robot can then watch what objects you pick up and where to put them,
-
1:17 - 1:19and try to do the same thing even when you aren't there.
-
1:19 - 1:22For me, one of the reasons I'm excited about this
-
1:22 - 1:24is the AI or artificial intelligence problem,
-
1:25 - 1:29building truly intelligent machines which can do just about anything that you or I can do.
-
1:29 - 1:31Many scientists think the best way to make progress on this
-
1:31 - 1:34is through learning algorithms called the "neural networks"
-
1:34 - 1:36which mimick how the human brain works
-
1:36 - 1:38and I'll teach about that too.
-
1:38 - 1:42In this class, you'll learn about machine learning and get to implement them yourself.
-
1:42 - 1:45This class will have homeworks and programming assignments,
-
1:45 - 1:50and if you successfully complete this class, you'll also get from me a signed Statement of Accomplishments
-
1:50 - 1:53stating how you did in the class and which you can put in your resumé.
-
1:53 - 1:56I hope you sign up on our web site and join us this Fall.
