On the Same Page: Voices of Berkeley Welcome Video

  • 0:03 - 0:04
Oh, should I look at the camera?
  • 0:04 - 0:05
    Okay.
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    Ready?
  • 0:07 - 0:09
I hope that I can do it.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
It's this camera or this camera?
  • 0:11 - 0:12
Okay. That is what I thought.
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    Alright.
  • 0:13 - 0:13
    Five.
  • 0:14 - 0:14
    [Speaking in Italian]
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    [Speaking in Hupa]
  • 0:15 - 0:15
    [Speaking in Farsi]
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    [American Sign Language]
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    Hi, congratulations.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    [Speaking in Spanish]
  • 0:20 - 0:21
What a great school to be in.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    [Speaking in Italian]
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    [Speaking in Swahili]
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    Congratulations on coming to
  • 0:27 - 0:28
one of the world’s premier universities.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    [Speaking in Farsi]
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    [Speaking in Korean]
  • 0:32 - 0:34
There’s just no place like it on earth.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
The On the Same Page Program
  • 0:37 - 0:39
is a signature event for the
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    College of Letters and Science
  • 0:41 - 0:42
for all of our incoming students,
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    freshmen and transfers.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
The idea is to give this
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    large group of incoming freshmen
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    a common academic experience,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    something to talk about,
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    something a bit intellectual.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
It’s one of the first occasions,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    we hope, among many that
  • 0:56 - 0:57
you’ll get to meet senior professors
  • 0:57 - 0:58
in your first year at Cal.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
This year it’s going to be about language.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    We have here at Berkeley,
  • 1:02 - 1:03
as you all discover very quickly,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
students from more than 100 countries.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
What can matter more than language?
  • 1:08 - 1:10
So, hi, my name’s Virginia Chung.
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    And I speak Chipinglish.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
And I call that because I speak Chinese,
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    Japanese and English.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    So I call it Chipinglish.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    [Speaking in Turkish]
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    [Speaking in Rumanian]
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    [Speaking in Spanish]
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    You realize I’m British, right?
  • 1:23 - 1:25
So, I was born in China.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
I came to the United States
  • 1:27 - 1:29
when I was 17 years old.
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    My mother came to Cal
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    in the 1940s.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
And her first language was Spanish.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
And she came here to be an English major.
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    My dream job would be
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    to interpret for the U.N.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    I barely spoke any English
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    when I first came here.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    So we’re always re-inventing
  • 1:43 - 1:43
    ourselves through language.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    I’m in the business program.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    I just got in.
  • 1:47 - 1:48
    I was nervous.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
I didn’t know what I was talking about.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
Don was awed by the hat rack.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
Don was awed by the hat rack.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
This year the experiment for the
  • 1:58 - 2:00
On the Same Page Program is called
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    Start by Talking Back.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    We’ve got these sentences that
  • 2:03 - 2:04
will pop up on the screen.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
You have a little audio recorder
  • 2:06 - 2:08
that pops up in the web browser.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
You click on record and say something like
  • 2:10 - 2:15
This wheel’s red spokes show why mud is no boon.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
This is like the King’s Speech.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
We map it in Google Maps.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
So that everybody can listen to each other.
  • 2:21 - 2:22
You have a dot on the map
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    that stands for you
  • 2:24 - 2:26
and a dot that stands for everybody else
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    in the incoming class
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    who’s participated in the program.
  • 2:29 - 2:30
And you can listen to each other,
  • 2:30 - 2:33
sort of see what you sound like.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
You know, we always say Berkeley,
  • 2:35 - 2:36
it’s one of the most diverse universities
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    in the world.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
And I ask myself, is it more diverse
  • 2:39 - 2:40
than a street corner in San Francisco?
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    Is it more diverse
  • 2:41 - 2:43
than a street corner in Shanghai?
  • 2:43 - 2:44
You know, the really great thing
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    about coming to Berkeley is
  • 2:46 - 2:47
you can design an experiment to actually
  • 2:47 - 2:49
get an answer to that question.
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    How diverse is Berkeley?
  • 2:50 - 2:52
You won’t know until you come here.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    That was, that was hard.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    That was hard.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
If you check the On the Same Page website
  • 3:00 - 3:03
you will see a feast of events,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    including faculty panels.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
A discussion group led by a faculty member.
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    A contest.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
And a keynote event with Geoff Nunberg.
  • 3:11 - 3:12
Well, the event is going to be a
  • 3:12 - 3:16
    conversation about bilingualism among people
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    who are artists and scientists
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    and who work with bilingualism.
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    It’s an extraordinary topic.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
We have a website or you can follow
  • 3:23 - 3:25
us on Twitter or on Facebook.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
We’re really looking forward to seeing
  • 3:28 - 3:31
you here on campus and hearing your voices here.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
Now it’s your turn to be the Bear.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
Don’t I get to hold the Bear?
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    Go Bears!
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    [Speaking in Bengali]
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    [Speaking in Japanese]
  • 3:41 - 3:45
    Oski
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    Go Bears.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    [Speaking in Italian]
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    [Speaking in Mandarin]
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    Enjoy it while you can
  • 3:51 - 3:52
because it goes by really quickly.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    That was fun.
Title:
On the Same Page: Voices of Berkeley Welcome Video
Description:

Every year the College of Letters & Science at UC Berkeley offers its incoming students something to talk about--with one another and our faculty. This year's theme is the Voices of Berkeley: linguistic diversity. We're inviting our new students to participate in a linguistic experiment, and explore the linguistic diversity of our campus in many ways: one-time discussions with faculty, public events, a one-minute video contest, freshman seminars, and other courses.
