Practice Schedule (Guitar Lesson IM-119) How to play IF Stage 1
-
0:10 - 0:11Hi, how are you doing?
-
0:11 - 0:12Justin here!
-
0:12 - 0:16Welcome to IM-199 which is the practice schedule
-
0:16 - 0:19for the Intermediate Foundation 1.
-
0:19 - 0:21Now, the point of this little video really
-
0:21 - 0:22is to remind you of the things
-
0:22 - 0:23that you should be practicing,
-
0:23 - 0:25how long you should be practicing them for,
-
0:25 - 0:29and giving you a few practice hints along the way.
-
0:29 - 0:31Of which the first practice hint
I wanna go through with you -
0:31 - 0:34and remind you of,
hopefully most of you have been doing it, -
0:34 - 0:37is the idea of using a practice timer.
-
0:37 - 0:38Now, it's something that many of you
-
0:38 - 0:39that have done the beginners course
-
0:39 - 0:40will already know about.
-
0:40 - 0:43It's a really, really great idea!
-
0:43 - 0:45Basically, you wanna practice for five minutes.
-
0:45 - 0:47So you set a little timer,
-
0:47 - 0:49you hit start on the timer,
-
0:49 - 0:50you zone in and you practice,
-
0:50 - 0:53and you really concentrate for that five minutes
-
0:53 - 0:54until the timer goes off,
-
0:54 - 0:56tells you that you finished your practice.
-
0:56 - 0:58You stop and you move on to the next thing.
-
0:58 - 0:59It's really important
-
0:59 - 1:00because it helps you focus
-
1:00 - 1:02and get really good concentrated practicing
-
1:02 - 1:04on whatever it is that you are working on.
-
1:04 - 1:05We are all busy.
-
1:05 - 1:07So if you are gonna practice
your bar chords for five minutes, -
1:07 - 1:09you may as well get into the idea of practicing
-
1:09 - 1:11really intensely for five minutes,
-
1:11 - 1:13making the most of your time.
-
1:13 - 1:15It really makes quite a big difference.
-
1:15 - 1:17The other advantage of course is that
-
1:17 - 1:19it means you don't overpractice.
-
1:19 - 1:21because some things, like let's say
your bar chords you are getting into -
1:21 - 1:23and if you practice it too much
-
1:23 - 1:25then you run out of time to practice the other stuff
-
1:25 - 1:26which is just as important.
-
1:26 - 1:29So what we've got for our practice routine really...
-
1:29 - 1:33I've written out here a fifty-minute practice routine.
-
1:33 - 1:35Now, if you can do fifty minutes a day- that's great,
-
1:35 - 1:37and you'll really see a lot of progress in your playing
-
1:37 - 1:40if you can get into doing fifty minutes.
-
1:40 - 1:42But it is a lot of practice time,
-
1:42 - 1:43and I suspect that many of you
-
1:43 - 1:45won't have that much time.
-
1:45 - 1:47So the way I've kind of shown on the web-site
-
1:47 - 1:50is a breakdown of two twenty-five- minute sections.
-
1:50 - 1:53Maybe you wanna do twenty-five in the morning
and twenty-five at night, -
1:53 - 1:55maybe fifty at one go if you got the time,
-
1:55 - 1:56but really,
-
1:56 - 1:57you know,
-
1:57 - 1:58it'll take you just...
-
1:58 - 2:00basically it'll take you twice as long
-
2:00 - 2:02if you do two twenty-five minutes a day
-
2:02 - 2:02than if you do fifty.
-
2:02 - 2:05Anyway, so what we've got here...
-
2:05 - 2:10we've got the first thing on there
is your bar chords for five minutes. -
2:10 - 2:13So the idea really
is just the same one as when we learnt -
2:13 - 2:16new chords in the beginners course:
-
2:16 - 2:16you put a chord down,
-
2:16 - 2:18doesn't really matter which one,
-
2:18 - 2:19you strum it,
-
2:19 - 2:19. . .
-
2:19 - 2:21you pick out the notes one note at a time,
-
2:21 - 2:23. . .
-
2:23 - 2:25check that every note is good and clear.
-
2:25 - 2:26If it's not clear,
-
2:26 - 2:28you go through your chord and you got:
-
2:28 - 2:31. . .
-
2:31 - 2:32Try and figure out what's wrong, you know,
-
2:32 - 2:33move your hand around,
-
2:33 - 2:34. . .
-
2:34 - 2:35lift your fingers up,
-
2:35 - 2:37see what if you can figure out the mistake is.
-
2:37 - 2:39. . .
-
2:39 - 2:40Yeah, you got it right!
-
2:40 - 2:41Strum it again.
-
2:41 - 2:42And that's it.
-
2:42 - 2:43And you move on to the next one.
-
2:43 - 2:44So, a whole five minutes of that.
-
2:44 - 2:45When you are doing that
-
2:45 - 2:47I want you to take your hand off each time
-
2:47 - 2:49when you go into the chord.
-
2:49 - 2:50So put the chord down,
-
2:50 - 2:52take the hand off, put it on again,
-
2:52 - 2:53remember the rolling your fingers back
-
2:53 - 2:54and all of those little tips.
-
2:54 - 2:55Go and revise the lessons again.
-
2:55 - 2:57Each time it's a good thing
-
2:57 - 2:58just before you practice
-
2:58 - 2:59just jump on the site,
-
2:59 - 3:00have a quick look,
-
3:00 - 3:01look at the little checklist of things
-
3:01 - 3:02you should be practicing,
-
3:02 - 3:03what you should be concentrating on.
-
3:03 - 3:04Definitely helpful!
-
3:04 - 3:06Make sure you are practicing the right thing.
-
3:06 - 3:07Really important!
-
3:07 - 3:09When you're doing lots of practice and it's intense,
-
3:09 - 3:11make sure you are practicing the right stuff
-
3:11 - 3:12all the time.
-
3:12 - 3:15Anyway, that would be your bar chord practice.
-
3:15 - 3:16The next thing on your list
-
3:16 - 3:17is your one-minute changes.
-
3:17 - 3:19And remember of course
-
3:19 - 3:21that this time we are moving our bar chord shapes
-
3:21 - 3:21up and down.
-
3:21 - 3:23So it's not timing yourself
-
3:23 - 3:25and counting how many you can do.
-
3:25 - 3:29It's just five one-minute
of really intense concentration -
3:29 - 3:30trying to move that chord around,
-
3:30 - 3:32making sure that your fingers
-
3:32 - 3:34don't kind of come unstockened,
-
3:34 - 3:36don't release the strings at all,
-
3:36 - 3:38just release the pressure.
-
3:38 - 3:39Maybe take your thumb off,
if you need too, -
3:39 - 3:40move the shape,
-
3:40 - 3:42press it down,
-
3:42 - 3:43release the pressure,
-
3:43 - 3:44move the chord,
-
3:44 - 3:45press it down.
-
3:45 - 3:47It's kind of more bar chord practice really,
-
3:47 - 3:49but this time instead of taking your hand off each time
-
3:49 - 3:51I just want you sliding between them
-
3:51 - 3:54and making sure that you've got
nice release of the pressure -
3:54 - 3:55each time you move,
-
3:55 - 3:57and that you can hold the chord down.
-
3:58 - 4:01Hold the chord shape down, I should say.
-
4:01 - 4:03Now, the next thing on your list
-
4:03 - 4:04is the major scale,
-
4:04 - 4:05for five minutes.
-
4:05 - 4:07Now, really I don't care at this stage
-
4:07 - 4:09about how fast you can do it
or how well you can do it. -
4:09 - 4:12What I care about
is that you memorize it. -
4:12 - 4:13It's very, very important
-
4:13 - 4:16that you memorize the scale as soon as possible.
-
4:16 - 4:17All other things that lay on from here:
-
4:17 - 4:19improvising with the scale,
-
4:19 - 4:20changing the way that we play the scale
-
4:20 - 4:21using one finger,
-
4:21 - 4:23all of that kind of more advanced things,
-
4:23 - 4:24they all rely on the fact
-
4:24 - 4:26that you memorized the scale.
-
4:26 - 4:28So that is your big assignment for this stage
-
4:28 - 4:29is to memorize the scale.
-
4:29 - 4:32Doesn't matter how fast or slow it is,
-
4:32 - 4:33just make sure you get it into your memory.
-
4:33 - 4:35That's a really important thing here.
-
4:35 - 4:37And that you do, as you're learning it,
-
4:37 - 4:38you do it really slowly and make sure you get it right.
-
4:38 - 4:40Cuz every time you make a mistake
-
4:40 - 4:42it's gonna be harder for you to get it right.
-
4:42 - 4:44Now, the next thing on your practice list
-
4:44 - 4:46is ten minutes of either the Justin Method,
-
4:46 - 4:49which is the set transcribing that I give you,
-
4:49 - 4:51or just generally transcribing.
-
4:51 - 4:52And I'm gonna recommend a few tunes
-
4:52 - 4:54that might be good ones for you
-
4:54 - 4:56to be transcribing as we go through the course.
-
4:56 - 4:59Now, the transcribing and learning songs by ear
-
4:59 - 5:01is such an important skill for any musician!
-
5:01 - 5:02Please, don't neglect that!
-
5:02 - 5:04I know a lot of people, beginners,
write and say: -
5:04 - 5:06'Oh I found it really difficult,
-
5:06 - 5:08and I had trouble kind of focusing
and staying focused on that.' -
5:08 - 5:10It's kind of a problem,
-
5:10 - 5:12and you will find that there's kind of a limit
-
5:12 - 5:17to how good on the guitar you can get
if you don't do transcribing, -
5:17 - 5:19ear training and transcribing of songs yourself.
-
5:19 - 5:20There really is.
-
5:20 - 5:22So please believe me that, you know,
-
5:22 - 5:23all of the great guitar players
-
5:23 - 5:25that ever walked the face of the planet
-
5:25 - 5:27learned to play guitar transcribing
-
5:27 - 5:28and learning riffs of other guitar players
-
5:28 - 5:29using their ears.
-
5:29 - 5:32Not using the tab books and all of that, you know,
-
5:32 - 5:34internet tabs and all of these sort of things.
-
5:34 - 5:36So make sure you get into the using your ears!
-
5:36 - 5:37Really important!
-
5:37 - 5:39Really, really, really important!
-
5:39 - 5:42So that would make it
twenty-five- minute practice set. -
5:42 - 5:45The second twenty-five minutes you've got
-
5:45 - 5:46is the minimum movements.
-
5:46 - 5:49So five minutes of doing minimum movements,
-
5:49 - 5:51which is kind of technical work.
-
5:51 - 5:53Either using the major scale
-
5:53 - 5:54if you are confident with the major scale.
-
5:54 - 5:56If you are not confident with the major scale,
-
5:56 - 6:00just using chromatic
one-two-three-four on each string. -
6:00 - 6:01It's a really...
-
6:01 - 6:04it's a massive boost for your technique.
-
6:04 - 6:06A lot of people don't even realize they've got an issue
-
6:06 - 6:07with the flying fingers.
-
6:07 - 6:08And when they do and they start practicing
-
6:08 - 6:11they see an immediate improvement in their technique
-
6:11 - 6:14over.... not maybe overnight but within a week or two
-
6:14 - 6:16you 'll probably start to notice difference.
-
6:16 - 6:18So five minutes you've got on that.
-
6:18 - 6:19You've got five minutes on your rhythm playing,
-
6:19 - 6:22which is basically going to be alternating between
-
6:22 - 6:248th notes rhythms and 16th note rhythms,
-
6:24 - 6:25trying to make sure
-
6:25 - 6:27that you can play along with the metronome
-
6:27 - 6:30doing 16 and 4 strums per click
-
6:30 - 6:31with the metronome,
-
6:31 - 6:34and than you're tapping your foot
on the beat each time -
6:34 - 6:35on the 1 2 3 and the 4,
-
6:35 - 6:36and not just with every down-strum.
-
6:36 - 6:39That's the focus there for your rhythm.
-
6:39 - 6:41We've then got five minutes
-
6:41 - 6:44spending learning the notes on the neck.
-
6:44 - 6:45So using the little exercise iI told you,
-
6:45 - 6:48just picking any random note on the fingerboard,
-
6:48 - 6:51using the octave shape to work out what the note is.
-
6:51 - 6:53If you don't know the notes on the thickest two strings
-
6:53 - 6:55you can spend your five minutes doing that.
-
6:55 - 6:57But really, you shouldn't be starting this course
-
6:57 - 6:59unless you 've got the notes
on the thickest two strings, -
6:59 - 7:02because it would mean
that you don't know your power chords properly -
7:02 - 7:05if you haven't mastered those notes
-
7:05 - 7:06on those bottom two strings.
-
7:06 - 7:10And lastly, we've got ten minutes of playing songs,
-
7:10 - 7:13repertoire, having fun,
jamming the tunes that you like. -
7:13 - 7:17It can either be songs that are specific to the material
-
7:17 - 7:20that we've covered this week
using those E-shape bar chords. -
7:20 - 7:22But probably you are still learning those a bit
-
7:22 - 7:24so maybe it's just revising songs
-
7:24 - 7:27that you've learned before,
making them better and better. -
7:27 - 7:29You know, pick a song,
pick a couple of songs, you know, -
7:29 - 7:31it's up to you how you do that,
-
7:31 - 7:34but really what you are aiming for
is to be able to develop your repertoire, -
7:34 - 7:40to be able to play lots of songs from memory,
at the drop of the hat, 'lets do this song!' -
7:40 - 7:41Because that's a really, really...
-
7:41 - 7:43I mean that's kind of the point
of playing the guitar, is to play songs. -
7:43 - 7:45So, whether the lead guitar,
-
7:45 - 7:47I wouldn't recommend
doing the lead guitar at the moment. -
7:47 - 7:50Mainly you should be concentrating
on you rhythm guitar -
7:50 - 7:51and developing your rhythmic tunes.
-
7:51 - 7:54But if you wanna include
a little bit of that kind of riff playing -
7:54 - 7:56or little lead stuff, that'd be cool too.
-
7:56 - 7:59It's really up to you,
what you wanna do for your songs. -
8:00 - 8:02That's a whole lot of practice, you know.
-
8:02 - 8:03I hope you are handling it OK.
-
8:03 - 8:05Remember, if you get any pain at any point
-
8:05 - 8:07with anything that you are practicing,
-
8:07 - 8:08if your wrists start hurting,
you fingers really hurt, -
8:09 - 8:10stop playing.
-
8:10 - 8:13A lot of the bar chord stuff,
you gonna get sore muscles, -
8:13 - 8:16particularly the one in-between
your thumb and your first finger. -
8:16 - 8:17Expect it to get sore.
-
8:17 - 8:18it's just gonna happen, alright?
-
8:18 - 8:21So, you know, you're best off
just kind of dealing wth it. -
8:21 - 8:23It should feel like you've just been to the gym
-
8:23 - 8:25and had a bit of a work-out, right?
-
8:25 - 8:25It shouldn't be painful.
-
8:25 - 8:27If it's painful, something's not right.
-
8:27 - 8:29So, it should be sore.
-
8:29 - 8:30Sore is good.
-
8:30 - 8:32Just, you know, that 'I've worked out' feeling is great.
-
8:32 - 8:35But 'oh my god, I can hardly pick up a cup of tea,'
-
8:35 - 8:36that's bad, right?
-
8:36 - 8:38So, be aware of that.
-
8:38 - 8:40If you do get any pain,
please go and see a doctor -
8:41 - 8:42right away and get it checked out,
-
8:42 - 8:44because what you don't want
-
8:44 - 8:47is developing some sort of serious hand problem because of your guitar playing.
-
8:47 - 8:49Could stuff you up for quite some time.
-
8:49 - 8:53Little bit of sore- good, pain- bad.
-
8:53 - 8:54That's basically what I'm saying.
-
8:54 - 8:56Okay, hope you have fun with that.
-
8:56 - 8:59On the web-site there's
a list of goals for you as well. -
8:59 - 9:00So, go and check that out.
-
9:00 - 9:02That's the things that I think
you should be able to do -
9:02 - 9:04with each one of these different topics
-
9:04 - 9:08before you move on to Intermediate Foundation 2.
-
9:08 - 9:10Hope you've enjoyed all of this.
-
9:10 - 9:11Have fun with your practice
-
9:11 - 9:14and I'll see you
for some more lessons very very soon! -
9:14 - 9:14Take care!
-
9:14 - 9:16Bye-bye!
