Practice Schedule (Guitar Lesson IM-119) How to play IF Stage 1

  • 0:10 - 0:11
    Hi, how are you doing?
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    Justin here!
  • 0:12 - 0:16
Welcome to IM-199 which is the practice schedule
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    for the Intermediate Foundation 1.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
Now, the point of this little video really
  • 0:21 - 0:22
is to remind you of the things
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    that you should be practicing,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
how long you should be practicing them for,
  • 0:25 - 0:29
and giving you a few practice hints along the way.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
Of which the first practice hint
I wanna go through with you
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    and remind you of,
hopefully most of you have been doing it,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
is the idea of using a practice timer.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
Now, it's something that many of you
  • 0:38 - 0:39
that have done the beginners course
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    will already know about.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
It's a really, really great idea!
  • 0:43 - 0:45
Basically, you wanna practice for five minutes.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So you set a little timer,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
you hit start on the timer,
  • 0:49 - 0:50
you zone in and you practice,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
and you really concentrate for that five minutes
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    until the timer goes off,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
tells you that you finished your practice.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
You stop and you move on to the next thing.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    It's really important
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    because it helps you focus
  • 1:00 - 1:02
and get really good concentrated practicing
  • 1:02 - 1:04
on whatever it is that you are working on.
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    We are all busy.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
So if you are gonna practice
your bar chords for five minutes,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
you may as well get into the idea of practicing
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    really intensely for five minutes,
  • 1:11 - 1:13
making the most of your time.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
It really makes quite a big difference.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
The other advantage of course is that
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    it means you don't overpractice.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
because some things, like let's say
your bar chords you are getting into
  • 1:21 - 1:23
and if you practice it too much
  • 1:23 - 1:25
then you run out of time to practice the other stuff
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    which is just as important.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
So what we've got for our practice routine really...
  • 1:29 - 1:33
I've written out here a fifty-minute practice routine.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
Now, if you can do fifty minutes a day- that's great,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
and you'll really see a lot of progress in your playing
  • 1:37 - 1:40
if you can get into doing fifty minutes.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
But it is a lot of practice time,
  • 1:42 - 1:43
and I suspect that many of you
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    won't have that much time.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
So the way I've kind of shown on the web-site
  • 1:47 - 1:50
is a breakdown of two twenty-five- minute sections.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
Maybe you wanna do twenty-five in the morning
    and twenty-five at night,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
maybe fifty at one go if you got the time,
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    but really,
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    you know,
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    it'll take you just...
  • 1:58 - 2:00
basically it'll take you twice as long
  • 2:00 - 2:02
if you do two twenty-five minutes a day
  • 2:02 - 2:02
    than if you do fifty.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
Anyway, so what we've got here...
  • 2:05 - 2:10
we've got the first thing on there
is your bar chords for five minutes.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    So the idea really
is just the same one as when we learnt
  • 2:13 - 2:16
new chords in the beginners course:
  • 2:16 - 2:16
    you put a chord down,
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    doesn't really matter which one,
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    you strum it,
  • 2:19 - 2:19
    . . .
  • 2:19 - 2:21
you pick out the notes one note at a time,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    . . .
  • 2:23 - 2:25
check that every note is good and clear.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    If it's not clear,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
you go through your chord and you got:
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    . . .
  • 2:31 - 2:32
Try and figure out what's wrong, you know,
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    move your hand around,
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    . . .
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    lift your fingers up,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
see what if you can figure out the mistake is.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    . . .
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    Yeah, you got it right!
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    Strum it again.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    And that's it.
  • 2:42 - 2:43
And you move on to the next one.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
So, a whole five minutes of that.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    When you are doing that
  • 2:45 - 2:47
I want you to take your hand off each time
  • 2:47 - 2:49
when you go into the chord.
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    So put the chord down,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
take the hand off, put it on again,
  • 2:52 - 2:53
remember the rolling your fingers back
  • 2:53 - 2:54
and all of those little tips.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
Go and revise the lessons again.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
Each time it's a good thing
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    just before you practice
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    just jump on the site,
  • 2:59 - 3:00
    have a quick look,
  • 3:00 - 3:01
look at the little checklist of things
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    you should be practicing,
  • 3:02 - 3:03
what you should be concentrating on.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    Definitely helpful!
  • 3:04 - 3:06
Make sure you are practicing the right thing.
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    Really important!
  • 3:07 - 3:09
When you're doing lots of practice and it's intense,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
make sure you are practicing the right stuff
  • 3:11 - 3:12
    all the time.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
Anyway, that would be your bar chord practice.
  • 3:15 - 3:16
The next thing on your list
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    is your one-minute changes.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    And remember of course
  • 3:19 - 3:21
that this time we are moving our bar chord shapes
  • 3:21 - 3:21
    up and down.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    So it's not timing yourself
  • 3:23 - 3:25
and counting how many you can do.
  • 3:25 - 3:29
    It's just five one-minute
    of really intense concentration
  • 3:29 - 3:30
trying to move that chord around,
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    making sure that your fingers
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    don't kind of come unstockened,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
don't release the strings at all,
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    just release the pressure.
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    Maybe take your thumb off,
    if you need too,
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    move the shape,
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    press it down,
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    release the pressure,
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    move the chord,
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    press it down.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
It's kind of more bar chord practice really,
  • 3:47 - 3:49
but this time instead of taking your hand off each time
  • 3:49 - 3:51
I just want you sliding between them
  • 3:51 - 3:54
and making sure that you've got
    nice release of the pressure
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    each time you move,
  • 3:55 - 3:57
and that you can hold the chord down.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
Hold the chord shape down, I should say.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
Now, the next thing on your list
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    is the major scale,
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    for five minutes.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
Now, really I don't care at this stage
  • 4:07 - 4:09
about how fast you can do it
or how well you can do it.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    What I care about
    is that you memorize it.
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    It's very, very important
  • 4:13 - 4:16
that you memorize the scale as soon as possible.
  • 4:16 - 4:17
All other things that lay on from here:
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    improvising with the scale,
  • 4:19 - 4:20
changing the way that we play the scale
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    using one finger,
  • 4:21 - 4:23
all of that kind of more advanced things,
  • 4:23 - 4:24
they all rely on the fact
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    that you memorized the scale.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
So that is your big assignment for this stage
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    is to memorize the scale.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
Doesn't matter how fast or slow it is,
  • 4:32 - 4:33
just make sure you get it into your memory.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
That's a really important thing here.
  • 4:35 - 4:37
And that you do, as you're learning it,
  • 4:37 - 4:38
you do it really slowly and make sure you get it right.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
Cuz every time you make a mistake
  • 4:40 - 4:42
it's gonna be harder for you to get it right.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
Now, the next thing on your practice list
  • 4:44 - 4:46
is ten minutes of either the Justin Method,
  • 4:46 - 4:49
which is the set transcribing that I give you,
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    or just generally transcribing.
  • 4:51 - 4:52
And I'm gonna recommend a few tunes
  • 4:52 - 4:54
that might be good ones for you
  • 4:54 - 4:56
to be transcribing as we go through the course.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
Now, the transcribing and learning songs by ear
  • 4:59 - 5:01
is such an important skill for any musician!
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    Please, don't neglect that!
  • 5:02 - 5:04
I know a lot of people, beginners,
    write and say:
  • 5:04 - 5:06
'Oh I found it really difficult,
  • 5:06 - 5:08
and I had trouble kind of focusing
    and staying focused on that.'
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    It's kind of a problem,
  • 5:10 - 5:12
and you will find that there's kind of a limit
  • 5:12 - 5:17
to how good on the guitar you can get
    if you don't do transcribing,
  • 5:17 - 5:19
ear training and transcribing of songs yourself.
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    There really is.
  • 5:20 - 5:22
So please believe me that, you know,
  • 5:22 - 5:23
all of the great guitar players
  • 5:23 - 5:25
that ever walked the face of the planet
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    learned to play guitar transcribing
  • 5:27 - 5:28
and learning riffs of other guitar players
  • 5:28 - 5:29
    using their ears.
  • 5:29 - 5:32
Not using the tab books and all of that, you know,
  • 5:32 - 5:34
internet tabs and all of these sort of things.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
So make sure you get into the using your ears!
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    Really important!
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    Really, really, really important!
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    So that would make it
    twenty-five- minute practice set.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
The second twenty-five minutes you've got
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    is the minimum movements.
  • 5:46 - 5:49
So five minutes of doing minimum movements,
  • 5:49 - 5:51
which is kind of technical work.
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    Either using the major scale
  • 5:53 - 5:54
if you are confident with the major scale.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
If you are not confident with the major scale,
  • 5:56 - 6:00
    just using chromatic
    one-two-three-four on each string.
  • 6:00 - 6:01
    It's a really...
  • 6:01 - 6:04
it's a massive boost for your technique.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
A lot of people don't even realize they've got an issue
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    with the flying fingers.
  • 6:07 - 6:08
And when they do and they start practicing
  • 6:08 - 6:11
they see an immediate improvement in their technique
  • 6:11 - 6:14
over.... not maybe overnight but within a week or two
  • 6:14 - 6:16
you 'll probably start to notice difference.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
So five minutes you've got on that.
  • 6:18 - 6:19
You've got five minutes on your rhythm playing,
  • 6:19 - 6:22
which is basically going to be alternating between
  • 6:22 - 6:24
8th notes rhythms and 16th note rhythms,
  • 6:24 - 6:25
    trying to make sure
  • 6:25 - 6:27
that you can play along with the metronome
  • 6:27 - 6:30
doing 16 and 4 strums per click
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    with the metronome,
  • 6:31 - 6:34
and than you're tapping your foot
    on the beat each time
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    on the 1 2 3 and the 4,
  • 6:35 - 6:36
and not just with every down-strum.
  • 6:36 - 6:39
That's the focus there for your rhythm.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    We've then got five minutes
  • 6:41 - 6:44
spending learning the notes on the neck.
  • 6:44 - 6:45
So using the little exercise iI told you,
  • 6:45 - 6:48
just picking any random note on the fingerboard,
  • 6:48 - 6:51
using the octave shape to work out what the note is.
  • 6:51 - 6:53
If you don't know the notes on the thickest two strings
  • 6:53 - 6:55
you can spend your five minutes doing that.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
But really, you shouldn't be starting this course
  • 6:57 - 6:59
unless you 've got the notes
    on the thickest two strings,
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    because it would mean
that you don't know your power chords properly
  • 7:02 - 7:05
if you haven't mastered those notes
  • 7:05 - 7:06
    on those bottom two strings.
  • 7:06 - 7:10
And lastly, we've got ten minutes of playing songs,
  • 7:10 - 7:13
    repertoire, having fun,
jamming the tunes that you like.
  • 7:13 - 7:17
It can either be songs that are specific to the material
  • 7:17 - 7:20
    that we've covered this week
    using those E-shape bar chords.
  • 7:20 - 7:22
But probably you are still learning those a bit
  • 7:22 - 7:24
so maybe it's just revising songs
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    that you've learned before,
    making them better and better.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    You know, pick a song,
pick a couple of songs, you know,
  • 7:29 - 7:31
it's up to you how you do that,
  • 7:31 - 7:34
but really what you are aiming for
is to be able to develop your repertoire,
  • 7:34 - 7:40
to be able to play lots of songs from memory,
at the drop of the hat, 'lets do this song!'
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    Because that's a really, really...
  • 7:41 - 7:43
I mean that's kind of the point
of playing the guitar, is to play songs.
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    So, whether the lead guitar,
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    I wouldn't recommend
doing the lead guitar at the moment.
  • 7:47 - 7:50
    Mainly you should be concentrating
    on you rhythm guitar
  • 7:50 - 7:51
    and developing your rhythmic tunes.
  • 7:51 - 7:54
    But if you wanna include
a little bit of that kind of riff playing
  • 7:54 - 7:56
or little lead stuff, that'd be cool too.
  • 7:56 - 7:59
    It's really up to you,
what you wanna do for your songs.
  • 8:00 - 8:02
That's a whole lot of practice, you know.
  • 8:02 - 8:03
I hope you are handling it OK.
  • 8:03 - 8:05
Remember, if you get any pain at any point
  • 8:05 - 8:07
with anything that you are practicing,
  • 8:07 - 8:08
    if your wrists start hurting,
    you fingers really hurt,
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    stop playing.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
A lot of the bar chord stuff,
    you gonna get sore muscles,
  • 8:13 - 8:16
    particularly the one in-between
your thumb and your first finger.
  • 8:16 - 8:17
    Expect it to get sore.
  • 8:17 - 8:18
    it's just gonna happen, alright?
  • 8:18 - 8:21
So, you know, you're best off
just kind of dealing wth it.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
It should feel like you've just been to the gym
  • 8:23 - 8:25
and had a bit of a work-out, right?
  • 8:25 - 8:25
    It shouldn't be painful.
  • 8:25 - 8:27
If it's painful, something's not right.
  • 8:27 - 8:29
    So, it should be sore.
  • 8:29 - 8:30
    Sore is good.
  • 8:30 - 8:32
Just, you know, that 'I've worked out' feeling is great.
  • 8:32 - 8:35
But 'oh my god, I can hardly pick up a cup of tea,'
  • 8:35 - 8:36
    that's bad, right?
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    So, be aware of that.
  • 8:38 - 8:40
If you do get any pain,
please go and see a doctor
  • 8:41 - 8:42
right away and get it checked out,
  • 8:42 - 8:44
    because what you don't want
  • 8:44 - 8:47
is developing some sort of serious hand problem because of your guitar playing.
  • 8:47 - 8:49
Could stuff you up for quite some time.
  • 8:49 - 8:53
Little bit of sore- good, pain- bad.
  • 8:53 - 8:54
    That's basically what I'm saying.
  • 8:54 - 8:56
Okay, hope you have fun with that.
  • 8:56 - 8:59
    On the web-site there's
