A one-stop shop for Python code

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    Hey there.
  • 0:01 - 0:04
    My name is Sumana Harihareswara
  • 0:04 - 0:08
and I am the project manager
    for the Python Package Index.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
From the time that I was a child,
    I've been very interested
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    in community organizing,
    empowering other people,
  • Not Synced
    making sure that there's
    nothing about us without us.
  • Not Synced
So when I found out about
    free and open source software,
  • Not Synced
I thought, 'yeah! This is the way forward.'
  • Not Synced
Essentially, the Python Package Index is
    core infrastructure
  • Not Synced
    for a huge chunk of
    the computing industry.
  • Not Synced
    Most of the time,
    when people write software,
  • Not Synced
we don't write everything from scratch.
  • Not Synced
    We basically borrow and duplicate
stuff that other people have done.
  • Not Synced
This is part of the magic of
    free and open-source software,
  • Not Synced
and it's part of how the internet --
and most of the technology you use! --
  • Not Synced
    has been built.
  • Not Synced
    It's really useful to have
    a single website,
  • Not Synced
    the Python Package Index,
    that's a one-stop shop
  • Not Synced
for all of the open-source Python code
that you might want to reuse.
  • Not Synced
The Python Package Index got popular
    before the code got good.
  • Not Synced
    Starting a few years ago,
    some people thought,
  • Not Synced
'all right, we need a rewrite.'
  • Not Synced
    Volunteers started it.
    But volunteers, working on
  • Not Synced
    unpredictable schedules -- it wasn't
working. We knew that we needed help.
  • Not Synced
    We needed MONEY! [laugh] Okay.
  • Not Synced
We needed funding in order to get
this piece of core infrastructure deployed.
  • Not Synced
Nobody was just giving us money for that.
  • Not Synced
We heard about MOSS and realized
that we were potentially a good candidate
  • Not Synced
to apply for a MOSS award.
    It's interesting how MOSS is
  • Not Synced
    kind of a hidden gem,
that not nearly enough people have
  • Not Synced
heard of who would benefit from it.
  • Not Synced
The Mozilla Open Source Support program
is a fantastic way to get funding
  • Not Synced
    from an organization that understands
why what you do is important.
  • Not Synced
Without the MOSS award, Python would be
    immeasurably worse off right now.
  • Not Synced
The MOSS Award is what enabled
    the Python Package Index
  • Not Synced
to launch and move into production.
