Do Pro Climbers Have Fear of Falling? Stefano G, Dave G and others Share their Secrets.
-
0:00 - 0:03- [Ben] So what did
you say about testing falls? -
0:05 - 0:06- Just scaring the shit out of yourself
-
0:06 - 0:08and then you're fine.
-
0:08 - 0:11(both laughing)
-
0:11 - 0:12You ready?
-
0:12 - 0:14- [Ben] Well, are you ready?
-
0:14 - 0:16- I am.
-
0:16 - 0:17Three, two, one.
-
0:18 - 0:21(rock music)
-
0:21 - 0:23(climber screaming)
-
0:23 - 0:28Fuck.
(upbeat music) -
0:32 - 0:35(climber grunting)
-
0:35 - 0:36It's still scary.
-
0:36 - 0:38- You don't know the feeling about like
-
0:38 - 0:41how it is to take a 20
meter fall, you know? -
0:41 - 0:43So there.
- [Ben] 20 meters? -
0:43 - 0:45- Yeah, a meter everyone says, right?
-
0:45 - 0:48(laughs)
-
0:48 - 0:50- Hi, have you ever wondered
-
0:50 - 0:54how professional elite
climbers deal with fear? -
0:54 - 0:55Or fear is just something
-
0:55 - 0:58that doesn't register in their heads?
-
0:58 - 1:03- [Ben] So, how does
the 9A slab fall look? -
1:03 - 1:04- Far, (laughing)
- Like sliding? -
1:04 - 1:07- Yeah, it's like running, running.
-
1:07 - 1:11- You have to run back,
but that's very bad. -
1:11 - 1:12(both laughing)
-
1:12 - 1:13- Right now, I am in Céüse,
-
1:13 - 1:16which is famous for huge ranouts.
-
1:16 - 1:19- Here in Céüse, I am
often terrified to fall. -
1:19 - 1:23- Here, everybody is on
the same playing ground, -
1:23 - 1:26no matter it's a 6a, 8a, or 9a.
-
1:26 - 1:29Everybody experiences some flying.
-
1:50 - 1:51Come on.
-
1:52 - 1:53Come on.
-
2:23 - 2:24- [Ben] Nice, well Done.
-
2:27 - 2:30That's some fear of falling non-existence
-
2:30 - 2:31- Okay, Take.
-
2:33 - 2:35- [Ben] So how does
it feel to skip so much? -
2:37 - 2:40- It's still scary, it's still scary.
-
2:40 - 2:41Yeah, it will be a long fall.
-
2:44 - 2:48This is the second crux of the route
-
2:49 - 2:53I'll probably be a bit more pumped
and I will probably fall here. -
2:54 - 2:54Hopefully not.
-
2:55 - 2:57- [Ben] So how do
you deal with the fear -
2:57 - 2:58in such situation?
-
2:58 - 3:04- I still feel the fear, but
my secret is to set a goal -
3:04 - 3:06before climbing.
-
3:06 - 3:09So my goal now was to start
from the rest of the route -
3:09 - 3:12and to try to reach almost the top.
-
3:12 - 3:16So when I have a goal before
I'm focused on the goal, -
3:16 - 3:20focus on the climb and the
fear comes in second place, -
3:20 - 3:22but still there is a bit of fear.
-
3:22 - 3:23In my opinion,
-
3:23 - 3:26it's is something that everybody has,
-
3:26 - 3:30and it is good to have a bit
of fear because it's something -
3:30 - 3:35that is useful to not to
do something dangerous. -
3:35 - 3:36- [Ben] Yeah.
-
3:36 - 3:39- Or maybe when I will try
the route from the ground, -
3:39 - 3:41I will clip the shorter one
-
3:41 - 3:44and skip the long one and this one,
-
3:44 - 3:48so it will be even even longer
because it's a faster to clip -
3:48 - 3:49the shorter one.
-
3:49 - 3:52So, hopefully, I won't fall here.
-
3:55 - 3:58- [Ben] I kind of
secretly hope that you do. -
3:58 - 3:59- I know.
-
4:00 - 4:03- And, if you're curious,
there was no big whippers. -
4:03 - 4:05In fact, just a few days later,
-
4:05 - 4:07Stefano did send this route
-
4:07 - 4:10so massive congratulations to you Stefano
-
4:10 - 4:12I hope you're still in your dream.
-
4:12 - 4:17And if you want to see more
footage from one of the hardest -
4:17 - 4:19routes on the planet earth-
-
4:19 - 4:19- [Ben] Nice.
-
4:19 - 4:22- You should visit his YouTube channel,
-
4:22 - 4:24there'll be a lot of that.
-
4:24 - 4:27And now let's move on to
other climbing deserts. -
4:27 - 4:29(upbeat music)
-
4:57 - 5:00- I have a pretty up and down relationship
-
5:00 - 5:03with a fear of falling.
-
5:03 - 5:05After bouldering depends on how many years
-
5:05 - 5:07I've been bouldering in a row,
-
5:07 - 5:10but it takes me a long time
to adapt back to climbing on a -
5:10 - 5:11route and not get scared.
-
5:11 - 5:14Let's say it's a two or
three-year period where I don't -
5:14 - 5:14climb on routes.
-
5:14 - 5:17It takes me months like
maybe three or four months. -
5:17 - 5:19If it's only been like
two or three months, -
5:19 - 5:22it takes me a few weeks.
But then for instance, -
5:22 - 5:23if I change crags,
-
5:23 - 5:26I have a whole new experience
like coming from Spain, -
5:28 - 5:31it's a different type of
scary than it is here. -
5:31 - 5:33I'm more afraid of hitting
the ground for instance. -
5:33 - 5:35So I might be afraid to hit the ground,
-
5:35 - 5:37but I'm never really afraid
to fall when I'm on the wall. -
5:37 - 5:39But here in Céüse,
-
5:39 - 5:41I'm often terrified to fall
-
5:41 - 5:43because the bolts
are really far apart. -
5:43 - 5:45And it doesn't matter
if it's 9a, or 7a. -
5:45 - 5:49a like often I can get very
scared in Céüse just because -
5:49 - 5:51on some of the easier routes,
-
5:51 - 5:54the runouts are part of
the tradition. You know, -
5:54 - 5:57it's like a thing that they started.
-
5:57 - 6:00When they first started bolting the
routes, like Patrick Edlinger, -
6:00 - 6:02a lot of these famous old French climbers,
-
6:02 - 6:05they have a style of putting
bolts really far apart. -
6:05 - 6:08So no matter whether it's an
easy route or a hard route, -
6:08 - 6:10it's kind of hard to
avoid to get scaried. -
6:10 - 6:12- What is an easy route for you?
-
6:12 - 6:14- I would say what I would
call easier routes between like -
6:14 - 6:19six, six and... six till eight,
like 6a to 8a -
6:20 - 6:22- So that's easy?
-
6:22 - 6:25yeah, well compare 8a to 9c
you know what I mean? -
6:25 - 6:28But like in this area, I
think they're the most scary. -
6:28 - 6:30- So what do you do when you're afraid?
-
6:32 - 6:36- Try to build confidence,
like try to see that it's okay. -
6:36 - 6:37Try to have good falls.
-
6:37 - 6:39And the reason I'm afraid is
because I've taken enough bad -
6:39 - 6:42falls in my life to know, to be afraid.
-
6:42 - 6:45So being afraid is important in one sense,
-
6:45 - 6:46because it keeps you safe,
-
6:46 - 6:50but then being afraid kind
of can make you not safe too, -
6:50 - 6:52if you make mistakes
because you're scared. -
6:52 - 6:55So it's important to have
a balance between the fear. -
6:55 - 6:58Like a rational, healthy
balance of what's dangerous -
6:58 - 6:59and what's just scary.
-
6:59 - 7:01So it's easy to come here and
it'd be in the beginning and -
7:01 - 7:05be like, wow, this is terrifying
and not climb natural, -
7:05 - 7:07you know? But then it starts to evolve,
-
7:07 - 7:10but sometimes it's very
good to be, be careful, -
7:10 - 7:11tell your Belayer like
-
7:11 - 7:13Hey watch me here because it's really run out
-
7:13 - 7:14and it's not very steep.
-
7:14 - 7:16And I want a dynamic fall
because I don't want to break -
7:16 - 7:17my legs
-
7:17 - 7:19and if you were to
get the rope behind your foot, -
7:19 - 7:21you could really hurt yourself
if you weren't wearing a helmet -
7:21 - 7:22or even if you were so.
-
7:22 - 7:23So it's important to know
-
7:23 - 7:26that it's not just like about being brave,
-
7:26 - 7:28but it's about being smart as well.
-
7:28 - 7:31It's like we could call it
a more Alpine style of sport climbing -
7:31 - 7:33but not all sport
climbing is like this. -
7:33 - 7:35Not all crags have this reputation,
-
7:35 - 7:39nor that the tradition of like
being run out, we can say. -
7:41 - 7:43here is a beautiful shot of you.
-
7:43 - 7:45- Very beautiful. The sunset.
-
7:45 - 7:48Amazing. Huh?
-
7:53 - 7:55I would say that in the past,
-
7:55 - 8:00like when I went like 10 years
ago, when I was like 20, 22, -
8:00 - 8:02I was always skipping bolts
on my project. -
8:02 - 8:03Like to motivate me
-
8:03 - 8:07I was doing 7b+ warmup with like
five quickdraws, -
8:07 - 8:11doing things little crazy.
-
8:11 - 8:13And with the time,
-
8:13 - 8:15like now I'm super scared of falling.
-
8:15 - 8:19And so I prefer even to
do my warm up top rope, -
8:19 - 8:22I don't know there was this
thing when I was younger, -
8:22 - 8:25maybe I was climbing with
people, that were - "Yeah, -
8:25 - 8:28we need to have balls."
- [Ben] to do what? -
8:28 - 8:29- We need to have balls like, you know,
-
8:29 - 8:32you need to take risks
to send something. -
8:32 - 8:35And then with time, I realize that,
-
8:35 - 8:37it's not really smart
and we can hurt ourselves. -
8:37 - 8:40And here you hurt yourself
how do you go down? -
8:40 - 8:42I mean, it's super complicated.
-
8:42 - 8:48But then when you have a project
and you need to really skip bolts to send -
8:49 - 8:51I usually do it.
-
8:53 - 8:57It's like there is a line,
a line to find -
8:57 - 8:58But for example,
-
8:58 - 9:01when you are going on a route like that,
you can't skip bolts, huh -
9:01 - 9:04If you skip the bolt,
you're on the ground. -
9:04 - 9:06I don't know in some fears
for example, in biography, -
9:06 - 9:08when you see the two last quickdraws
-
9:08 - 9:12they are 10 meter apart. And
it's like maybe 6c climbing, -
9:12 - 9:15but it's super scary,
in my mind I have like, -
9:15 - 9:17kind of are so blockage because
-
9:17 - 9:19even if you already sent the 9a+
-
9:19 - 9:22you will still have to go to the top
-
9:22 - 9:23And it's super sketch.
-
9:24 - 9:27- [Commentator] Nonaka (indistinct)
who needs the lead climb -
9:27 - 9:28of her life.
-
9:29 - 9:31- [Ben] So, are you afraid to fall?
-
9:31 - 9:32- Not really
-
9:32 - 9:33I don't know.
-
9:33 - 9:38Yeah. Little bit scared, but
yeah, it's part of climbing. -
9:38 - 9:39- [Ben] What do you
do when you're afraid? -
9:41 - 9:44- I mean, I just go with the flow.
-
9:46 - 9:47- [Ben] So you only
climb with these guys -
9:47 - 9:49who are never afraid to fall?
-
9:49 - 9:51- Exactly.
- no -
9:51 - 9:53- No. He's crazy.
-
9:59 - 10:01- [Ben] Do you also skip quickdraws
-
10:01 - 10:03in your project?
- Nah, never. -
10:03 - 10:05- [Ben] Why not?
-
10:05 - 10:06- because I'm scared.
-
10:06 - 10:07- [Ben] Wait, wait, wait,
-
10:07 - 10:10you just said that you are not
scared and now you're saying -
10:10 - 10:10you're scared
- Wait, wait, wait, -
10:10 - 10:12- I never skipped a draw
-
10:12 - 10:15No, it's dangerous.
-
10:16 - 10:18- [Ben] So, can
we get this straight? -
10:18 - 10:21You just said that you're not
afraid, but skipping draws, -
10:21 - 10:22you are afraid.
- Yeah. -
10:23 - 10:26That's true. Yeah.
(both laughing) -
10:31 - 10:32(man screams)
-
10:32 - 10:35- [Ben] So are you afraid to fall?
-
10:35 - 10:36- Not anymore? Yeah.
-
10:36 - 10:38Used to be a little.
-
10:38 - 10:40- [Ben] Do you skip quickdraws?
-
10:40 - 10:42- For sure. Yeah.
-
10:42 - 10:44If you get pumped, it's like
easier to skip the draw, -
10:44 - 10:47then do a clip, so, I don't know.
-
10:47 - 10:49- [Ben] So you never
get like really afraid -
10:49 - 10:52of situations on any of these routes.
-
10:52 - 10:55- Not on stuff like this
'cause it's like pretty safe. -
11:02 - 11:03I don't trad to climb that
much -
11:03 - 11:05so sometiems when I trad climb, I get pretty spooked,
-
11:05 - 11:08but normally sport climbing feels okay.
-
11:08 - 11:11- If you were to invite a
friend and he's afraid to fall, -
11:11 - 11:12what would you do to help him?
-
11:12 - 11:14- Yeah, I would just
say, get on something, -
11:14 - 11:16that's a little outside
of your comfort zone, -
11:16 - 11:17that you know you can do,
-
11:17 - 11:19but it's gonna be a little
scary and then you just keep -
11:19 - 11:21pushing it further and further.
-
11:21 - 11:25- [Ben] So how does
the 9a slab fall look? -
11:25 - 11:27- Far.
- [Ben] Like, sliding? -
11:27 - 11:31- Yeah, it's like running, running back-
-
11:31 - 11:33- Yeah, running back, it looks like,
-
11:33 - 11:35- I mean the best is if
you have a little distance -
11:35 - 11:37between the wall and you like,
-
11:37 - 11:42of course when the slab
is too much, like, laying, -
11:42 - 11:47like then you have to run
back, but that's very bad. -
11:48 - 11:51But if you push hard to the backside
-
11:51 - 11:52and you have a big distance,
-
11:52 - 11:56it's also not good because
then you're crushing very hard. -
11:56 - 11:57- And it's very good
-
11:57 - 12:01if you have like a good
player who who's playing soft, -
12:01 - 12:02you don't crash against a wall.
-
12:02 - 12:05If there's like somebody
who is belaying very hard, -
12:06 - 12:09it can be like you fall,
fall, fall and then it stops, -
12:09 - 12:10and then...
-
12:10 - 12:12- [Ben] And then you stop.
-
12:12 - 12:16And that's very hard.
And then your ankle stop working. -
12:16 - 12:19So what do you do when you
are afraid on the route? -
12:19 - 12:23- I try to look at a ground at a distance
-
12:23 - 12:27when I am sure that the ground
that it's not dangerous. -
12:27 - 12:31I try to, to remind me, when I'm climbing-
-
12:31 - 12:33- [Ben] So you
observed from the ground up? -
12:33 - 12:34- Yes.
-
12:34 - 12:36- [Ben] And then you
remind this to yourself -
12:36 - 12:37when you're on the route.
-
12:37 - 12:41- And for me, it's very
helpful when my belayer is like, -
12:41 - 12:44giving me like a feedback
when I'm climbing. -
12:44 - 12:45So like "allez"
-
12:45 - 12:48so that I'm like sure that he know
-
12:48 - 12:51that I'm like a little bit
scared and that he's like there. -
12:51 - 12:53- [Ben] How does it
feel to climb in Céüse and -
12:53 - 12:56skip quickdraws and do big whippers?
-
12:56 - 13:00- To be honest, I never
skipped quickdraws, never. -
13:01 - 13:06- For me, it's a very different,
I have no fear for falling, -
13:06 - 13:09but it was not every time like this
-
13:09 - 13:11because when I was younger,
-
13:11 - 13:13I fell on the ground ever badly,
-
13:13 - 13:16and after that I had big fear of falling,
-
13:17 - 13:21but I started to train against this fear,
-
13:21 - 13:25like I climbed half a
meter above the quickdraw -
13:25 - 13:30and started falling,
and so I worked my mind -
13:30 - 13:35every meter from meter, and
from position to position. -
13:35 - 13:38And it took me about, I think, a year.
-
13:38 - 13:40- [Ben] Basically
from the ground fall? -
13:40 - 13:41- Yeah.
-
13:41 - 13:42- [Ben] In a year
you reached the point -
13:42 - 13:43where you're completely not afraid.
-
13:43 - 13:44- No, I think, no, no,
-
13:44 - 13:47I think the point when
I fall to the ground, -
13:49 - 13:54to the point I could climb
normal with not a big fear, -
13:54 - 13:59it took me one year, but
I was 14 then and yeah, -
13:59 - 14:01now I'm 27.
-
14:01 - 14:03So there are a lot of years between,
-
14:05 - 14:07but now I have no fear of falling.
-
14:07 - 14:08- [Ben] At all?
- At all, yeah. -
14:08 - 14:12It's a really funny because
I never used clip sticks or -
14:12 - 14:15anything because my, my parents, yeah.
-
14:15 - 14:18They're very traditional
climbers from Saxony. -
14:18 - 14:23And I dunno it's, I don't
know where it comes from, -
14:23 - 14:25but it it's often like this. I,
-
14:25 - 14:29I climbed the first meters to
the first quickdraws for her. -
14:30 - 14:31- [Ben] So you are
a clip stick for her? -
14:31 - 14:32- Yeah.
-
14:32 - 14:33- Yeah, whenever I like scared
-
14:33 - 14:36or if there's like in front of you,
-
14:36 - 14:39like a lot of boulders at the ground.
-
14:39 - 14:43And even if you don't know the holds,
-
14:43 - 14:45and the first quickdraw is
-
14:45 - 14:48up to five meters or something like that,
-
14:48 - 14:50it's very useful to have somebody
-
14:50 - 14:52who put in the first quickdraw.
-
14:52 - 14:55But I think falling at
slabs, it's more uncomfortable, -
14:55 - 14:58like falling in the overhanging
part because overhanging -
14:58 - 15:00part is like, you can
pull up yourself again, -
15:00 - 15:04but there's like, you
falling in like nothing. -
15:04 - 15:05And in the slab,
-
15:05 - 15:08you falling against the
wall and you really, -
15:08 - 15:10you should really know how to fall.
-
15:10 - 15:11- [Ben] So you
don't have problem with -
15:11 - 15:13falling on slabs.
-
15:13 - 15:14- No. I don't have,
-
15:14 - 15:20but there's also a big difference
between I'm climbing a lot -
15:20 - 15:23of competitions and she's
climbing up the rock -
15:23 - 15:24at the moment.
-
15:24 - 15:25And in competition climbing,
-
15:25 - 15:27if you have a fear of falling,
-
15:27 - 15:31it makes no sense because you
have to fight for every hold. -
15:31 - 15:34And when the fear is
stopping you, then you know, -
15:34 - 15:36it makes no sense to compete. So, I mean,
-
15:36 - 15:40then that's maybe also a
difference if you train different -
15:40 - 15:41in climbing.
-
15:42 - 15:45- [Ben] So do professional
competition, climbers, -
15:45 - 15:48train fear of falling,
like specifically? -
15:48 - 15:49- I, I think they should.
-
15:49 - 15:50Yeah.
-
15:50 - 15:51I mean it,
-
15:51 - 15:55I think it comes out automatic
because you do a lot of in -
15:55 - 15:57competition, you do flash
and on-site climbing. -
15:57 - 15:59So that means in training,
-
15:59 - 16:01you try routes for flashing onsite.
-
16:01 - 16:06So you, of course you try
routes, which are much harder. -
16:06 - 16:07You can climb in a flash.
-
16:07 - 16:10So it it's, it's all about how,
-
16:10 - 16:13how far I can come in this route. So,
-
16:13 - 16:16and that means also that you have to fall.
-
16:16 - 16:18Yeah. Because you cannot reach the anchor,
-
16:18 - 16:19like in a safe way.
-
16:19 - 16:22- [Ben] Pretty much
all your training is climbing -
16:22 - 16:24until you fall, so you
fall with every climb. -
16:24 - 16:27- Right, you fall in every
training, in every route. -
16:27 - 16:28- [Ben] Every situation is different
-
16:28 - 16:29and where you fall-
- Right. -
16:29 - 16:32- It's not like on a project
where you know the falls are -
16:32 - 16:33Do you train falling?
-
16:33 - 16:34- Yeah, really.
-
16:34 - 16:38Because at first I was very scared.
-
16:38 - 16:41And with every fall in Céüse,
it gets easier and easier. -
16:41 - 16:46And you, you, not that
scared and you can you feel -
16:46 - 16:49how you start moving.
Because you're too scared -
16:49 - 16:53you freeze, you freeze
like every hold and you, -
16:53 - 16:57pull it very hard and when
you can stop this and you can -
16:57 - 17:00start moving again, it's the best way.
-
17:26 - 17:30- [Ben] So do you get
scared on climbing routes? -
17:30 - 17:34- Sometimes I do. Sometimes
it's, you're on the runout, -
17:34 - 17:37you just can't take it easy.
-
17:37 - 17:40You don't know the feeling about
like how it is to take a 20 -
17:40 - 17:44meter fall, you know?
- [Ben] 20 meters? -
17:44 - 17:47Yeah, It might, I mean,
we're in Céüse, right? -
17:48 - 17:51But if something's new, it's supposed to,
-
17:51 - 17:53to give you some fear.
-
17:53 - 17:55That's usual. Like everybody has it.
-
17:55 - 17:58And I feel like the more I'm thinking,
-
17:58 - 18:01the more I have this possibility
to get afraid in the runout -
18:01 - 18:05So I have these days
where it's like that, -
18:05 - 18:06where I just get afraid.
-
18:06 - 18:09And after days where it just
don't need to do anything, -
18:09 - 18:10I can just climb.
-
18:10 - 18:12And I don't think...
-
18:12 - 18:17I don't hesitate with a lot of confidence.
-
18:17 - 18:19It's just flowing pure flow.
-
18:19 - 18:22And I don't even feel stressed
about a certain project. -
18:22 - 18:24And it's totally on and off for me.
-
18:24 - 18:27Sometimes even in ice
climbing, I feel the same, -
18:27 - 18:30like this coming and going with fear.
-
18:30 - 18:33It's never really just there or not there.
-
18:33 - 18:34Sometimes you're even
having a really good day. -
18:34 - 18:37And then sometimes you end up in a,
-
18:37 - 18:40in a certain pitch where it's
just not good anymore. -
18:40 - 18:43You just don't feel it's
it's not okay for you. -
18:43 - 18:44You just don't want to fall there.
-
19:05 - 19:06- [Ben] Do you skip the bolt?
-
19:06 - 19:07- Yes, I do.
-
19:08 - 19:11It's not making it any easier.
-
19:11 - 19:13It's more because it's easier
to just not get pumped that -
19:13 - 19:16much while сlipping all these quickdraws.
-
19:34 - 19:38- But sometimes it's a lot I have to do.
-
19:38 - 19:42Maybe test the fall in order
to know that I'm not going to -
19:42 - 19:46hurt myself on it or it's completely okay.
-
19:46 - 19:47- [Ben] Come on fight.
-
19:47 - 19:49- Especially on my project up
there Jungle Boogie -
19:49 - 19:53it's like travers, and sometimes
you're like above the rope. -
19:58 - 20:01- So it's pretty easy to get
stuck with the foot behind -
20:01 - 20:03the rope, and if you're skipping draws,
-
20:03 - 20:04you really don't want that to happen.
-
20:06 - 20:11If something's new, it's
supposed to give you some fear. -
20:11 - 20:13That's usual, everybody has it.
-
20:13 - 20:15And falling is for a lot
of beginners. It's new. -
20:15 - 20:16And that's why they're scared,
-
20:16 - 20:18but it's not like really deep fear.
-
20:18 - 20:21They don't freak out at
all. Some of they do. -
20:21 - 20:24They might have like real
panic, but a lot of people, -
20:24 - 20:27they don't freak out,
but they cannot let go. -
20:27 - 20:30They just don't feel
comfortable. For them like -
20:30 - 20:33as I do it with my testing on the routes,
-
20:33 - 20:37it's super good to go to a gym
with a partner where you feel -
20:37 - 20:42like he has some experience
belaying and you just test -
20:42 - 20:47slowly, you like, mini
whipper, for the first time. -
20:47 - 20:50So you build up this
confidence that the rope -
20:50 - 20:51is gonna be okay.
-
20:51 - 20:55You are gonna be okay, the
belayer is able to hold you. -
20:57 - 21:01- So if fear is something that
you would like to have less, -
21:01 - 21:05I have made the video
explaining exactly what Alex was -
21:05 - 21:10talking about from your very
first tiny, tiny fall to big, -
21:10 - 21:14big whippers, using different
exercises and techniques. -
21:26 - 21:30So highly recommended and
be patient, it takes time, -
21:31 - 21:34but it's definitely worth it.
-
21:34 - 21:35- The same for finger power.
-
21:36 - 21:38Fear of falling and finger power
-
21:38 - 21:42it's something people always
want to have like super fast. -
21:42 - 21:45Like I would like to be
able to hang on beastmaker, -
21:45 - 21:46like middle edge,
-
21:46 - 21:48but it's actually something
you would just need -
21:48 - 21:50to like build over time.
-
21:50 - 21:53It's not going to happen
from now to tomorrow. -
21:53 - 21:55And that's maybe where a
lot of people struggling. -
21:55 - 21:59I mean in general climbing
is a sport where sometimes -
21:59 - 22:02for me, I feel like for one year,
-
22:02 - 22:05I'm not progressing until
there is some slight progress. -
22:05 - 22:10It's just slow. Everything.
And we need to be patient. -
22:10 - 22:11- [Ben] Nice.
-
22:11 - 22:13So what did you say about testing falls?
-
22:15 - 22:17- [Alexander] Just scaring
the shit out of yourself, -
22:17 - 22:18until you're fine.
-
22:22 - 22:23Ready?
-
22:23 - 22:25- [Ben] Well, are you ready?
-
22:25 - 22:27- I am.
-
22:27 - 22:28Three, two, one.
-
22:33 - 22:35- [Ben] So, what did
you say about the fall? -
22:35 - 22:36- It was nice.
-
22:36 - 22:39- [Ben] No, no,
you said something else. -
22:39 - 22:42- That was a bit longer than
expected, but he just did the math -
22:44 - 22:48Yeah, the belayer was like
10kg less than me -
22:48 - 22:49But it was still totally safe.
-
22:51 - 22:53- [Ben] How many
meters from the ground? -
22:53 - 22:56- I didn't know how many, like four?
-
22:56 - 22:58- [Ben] I don't know.
-
22:58 - 23:00- It was like there,
like in this white spot, -
23:02 - 23:06this maybe maybe four meters,
-
23:06 - 23:08that's good coming down
the whole route, no? -
23:10 - 23:14Yeah, if you don't send, you
need to get hyped, differently. -
23:20 - 23:25- So that was fun if you enjoyed
this as much as I enjoyed doing -
23:25 - 23:26click a like,
-
23:26 - 23:32and if you want to support me
in creating more videos like this -
23:32 - 23:33check out my website,
-
23:33 - 23:36where you can find all
information, how to do so, -
23:36 - 23:39and huge thank you for all
of these amazing humans -
23:39 - 23:41that I interviewed.

-
23:52 - 23:54and have normal proper conversation.
-
23:54 - 23:56So yay.
-
23:56 - 24:01- Yeah, you have to be more
motivated of climbing the routes -
24:01 - 24:03than being scared of
falling when you make a try.
