Hi, I'm going to talk today
about the unconscious mind
and how it affects your behavior
and your perception of the world,
especially the social world.
So I should start by defining
what I mean by the unconscious.
And what scientists today
mean by unconscious processes
are processes that occur, first of all,
with no effort on your part -
at least no conscious effort -
and they're automatic.
You're not aware of them.
You don't need any willpower
to create them,
and they're more or less
beyond your control.
As a result, we don't really understand
what's influencing us in many ways,
and we often can't avoid
the behaviors that it produces.
But this is not the Freudian unconscious,
so let me make that clear.
The Freudian unconscious
is the concept of the unconscious
that is hidden from you
for motivational or emotional reasons
and it can be revealed
through introspection or through therapy.
But the modern idea of the unconscious
is much different from that.
It's something that evolved evolutionarily
to help us navigate our world,
our perceptual world, our social world,
and it takes place in parts of your brain
that are inherently inaccessible
to your conscious mind.
And the field I'm going to talk about
is called social neuroscience.
Social neuroscience is really
a combination of three fields.
Traditionally, we have social psychology,
which is the field of the psychology
of how people interact with each other,
and cognitive psychology,
which is the science of how we think.
But in the mid-1990s, a new field
grew up called neuroscience.
Neuroscience is largely based
on a new technology,
many new technologies,
but in particular one has been dominant,
and that's called fMRI,
or functional magnetic resonance imaging,
which is a bit of a mouthful,
but you may be familiar with MRI
from medical testing,
which gives you a nice image
of your internal organs.
Well, fMRI has that word
"functional" in front of it
because it also tells,
when you do it of the brain,
what part of brain is at work.
Here you can see, for instance.
It's totally revolutionized psychology
because the modern and social
neuroscience, or psychology,
that's grown up from this
is not only based on studies of behavior
but connects those studies
to what's going on in the brain.
So it makes the concepts
much more concrete
and makes them to much more
of a hard science.
I'm going to give you one example
of fMRI and how it works,
or the results that it can achieve.
This is a study done at Berkeley,
where subjects were shown
different slides,
and you can see four of the slides here.
These subjects were looking
at these slides on goggles
while they were laying in an fMRI machine.
The scientists took the data
from their brain -
not the data from the slides,
but purely the readings from their brain -
from their visual cortex
and from other parts of the brain
that were related to the thematic nature
of what they were seeing,
and they asked the computer to reconstruct
the slides that the people were seeing -
a kind of mind reading.
That computer took all this data
and then looked at a database
that had 6 million images
and picked the ones that were closest.
As you can see, it was very close,
not just in the layout
and the physical data of the slides,
but thematically, it was really
a kind of mind reading.
So I'm going to talk about today
the unconscious mind in two areas.
One is our physical perception
and the other is our social perception.
My real point here is that we create
our image of other people,
of social situations,
business, financial situations,
using not only our conscious thought
but our unconscious mind.
I'm going to start by illustrating that
in sensory perception,
partly because sensory perception
is much more dramatic
and easy to illustrate in a talk like this
and partly because the ways that we
reconstruct reality from limited data
are analogous in sensory perception
and in social perception.
I want you to come away
thinking that our perceptions,
both our visual, our auditory perceptions
and our memories
and our social perceptions,
are all not literally what's out there,
but they're something
constructed by our brain
from what's really out there
plus many other things,
such as the context,
expectation and even desire.
I want you to come away thinking
that the way we experience the world
is largely driven
by this unconscious processing.
Here's an example.
This is what you perceive
when you look at a road, let's say.
Now, this is not really
what's hitting your retina.
The data that's hitting your retina
is much more fuzzy; it looks like this.
The yellow dot has been added
just to show where the person was looking.
The black dot wasn't added.
It's where the optic nerve attaches
to the retina, and there's no data at all.
So your eye takes this kind of fuzzy data
and without any effort and automatically
and without any control on your part
turns it into that,
into something that's very clear.
Let me illustrate that
more specifically with this slide.
If you look at this,
you see a checkerboard,
and you probably see
the rectangle with the B in it -
it looks like a white square -
and the rectangle with the A in it
looks like a black square.
But I'm going to tell you right now,
the truth is that A and B are identical,
so the actual physical light emanating
from A and B, that you see on the screen,
are identical.
The square B is the same color
as the square A.
So I want you now try and have
your conscious mind override that.
I said it's automatic
and you can't control it.
I want you to look at that
and see B as the same color as A.
And you'll find that you can't do that.
Now, why do you see B
as being lighter than A?
It's the context.
Your unconscious mind
is taking the context of this photo
and making you see B as a white square
and A as a black square.
And you can call it an optical illusion,
but it's a gift to you
because you don't want to go through life
taking in the actual literal physical data
and stopping every few seconds
to figure out what it means
and to reconstruct this pattern
from the data of light and dark.
In case you don't trust me,
think I'm just making this up,
let me take the context away.
So watch the screen,
and you'll see what happens to A and B
when I pull the context
of the checkerboard away.
So now without the context,
you can see that A and B are the same.
Thank you!
(Laughter)
(Applause)
Now, I could, if I had
more than 18 minutes, but I can't.
So this is a picture of Barack Obama,
who you may recognize.
This is to illustrate the social component
of your mental processing.
When you look at these
two pictures of Obama,
they probably both look like Obama
upside down and fairly normal.
But our social perceptions,
our social interactions,
are extremely important to us,
and so our brain operates largely
to help us with our social perception.
These pictures
are actually very different,
they're not really very similar,
but your social perception
is not really working in full speed
because he's upside down,
and we are not made
to see people upside down -
maybe if you're a yoga instructor
and stand on your head -
but most of us don't,
so we don't notice that.
But look what happens
when I turn them over.
So if you were to see
this fellow on the street,
you go, "Whoa, looks a little like Obama,
but something happened."
(Laughter)
Maybe that's how he'll look
after the election race.
(Laughter)
If you see this fellow,
you'll see a normal human being.
Well, now your social part of your brain
is interpreting this for you,
and it's doing it automatically.
Let me turn them over again
and see what happens.
So you see how that works?
The effect kind of disappears
when he's upside down
and comes back when he's right side up.
(Laughter)
Now let me show you
another example, in hearing,
just to show you this isn't just the way
that our visual processing works,
but our hearing also.
We take the auditory data
that comes into our ears,
and just as our brain plays games with us
to construct an image and vision,
it does the same thing in audio.
Listen to this song you may recognize.
It's by Led Zeppelin -
"Stairway to Heaven."
And it's not playing. One more time.
(Music: Led Zeppelin,
"Stairway to Heaven")
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow,
don't be alarmed now.
It's just a spring clean
for the May Queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by,
but in the long run,
there's still time ...
This song probably sounds
pretty normal to you,
and you can decode mentally
the eight or ten lines that are here
in the song played forward.
And now, in a second,
I'm going to play it for you backwards.
Listen to it backwards.
I want you to see,
Is Led Zeppelin clever enough
to create an audio file
that makes sense both forwards
and when played backwards?
(Backwards music: "Stairway to Heaven")
(Incomprehensible lyrics)
So now you've heard some lines
of the song played backwards.
And you think if I gave you paper,
you could write down the lines?
Or does it sound like gibberish?
I think it sounds to people
like gibberish.
This is because it really is gibberish.
But this gibberish
that comes into your brain
can be transformed into something
by helping your unconscious mind
have a little context.
So I'm going to play it again
with some words.
And just as the checkerboard
looked different
when I took the squares away
and put them in the context,
this song is going to sound
different to you backwards
now that I played it with the context.
So please read along.
(Music)
[Oh. Here's to my sweet Satan.
The one whose little path
would make me sad
whose power is Satan.
He'll give you, give you 666.
There was a little toolshed
where he made us suffer,
sad Satan.]
So now we have two versions of reality.
The physics of it is the same -
you had the same audio
the first time and this time,
but your perception is totally different
because now your mind has taken this
and constructed something out of it.
To show you again that it's automatic
and you can't avoid it,
and I'm sure you understand
that it's been effortless,
I'm going to play it again.
Watch the words again, listen to it,
but hear it the way
you heard it the first time
and not hear the words,
just hear the gibberish, okay?
(Backwards music: "Stairway to Heaven")
So you couldn't avoid it now,
because once you've heard it,
you're spoiled.
Because of this, some people
actually think they're hearing messages,
subliminal messages, in backwards song,
but it's not really there.
If you go to sceptics.com,
Michael Shermer's group,
you can see some discussions
about how this is really false.
What I want to get onto now -
I want to go to social perception.
The point is that all these same tricks
that your mind plays to create our visual
and our auditory perception
also work in social perception.
One of the things our brains use
to create a social perception, an image,
is appearance.
People are inherently very social animals.
We couldn't have survived as a species
without social cooperation,
and, indeed, when scientists
study it today,
they find that people
with a low amount of social context,
with a small social network,
are at much higher health risks
than people who have
a large social network.
In fact, having
a very small social network
is as big a health risk
as heavy smoking or obesity.
In this study, scientists
gathered together people,
two groups of people,
and they showed them
political data on two candidates -
a Republican and a Democrat.
The data was not only pure data
on what they believed
but also a picture of the two,
of each candidate.
To one group, they showed the Democrat
in a photo that looked more competent
and the Republican in a less competent,
less flattering photo,
and the other group, they switched it.
Not beauty, a look of competence.
The only difference between the two groups
was they were seeing the same data
but a different view of the candidate,
and the question was,
How much does this affect their voting?
The answer is it amounted
to a vote swing of 14%.
So by switching the photos
to being more confident versus less,
it was a 14% vote swing,
which is enough to swing most elections,
and that's a very dramatic evidence.
But of course, it was in the laboratory,
so what about the real world?
Fortunately, a psychologist
at Princeton University
decided to test this
out in the real world.
He gathered pairs of head shots
of the Democratic
and the Republican candidates
in dozens of races
for governorships and for Congress.
He brought hundreds of people
into a laboratory,
and he showed them
these pairs of photos and asked them
purely to judge which person looked
more competent in each case.
He told them, "If you recognize
one of the candidates, don't vote.
We're just looking
at these photos of people
and picking who looks more competent."
Then he took a bold step,
and he predicted the outcome
of each of these elections
based purely on who was voted
more competent looking.
And the question is,
How successful was he?
If competence had no effect,
he would be 50% successful,
but he was 70% successful.
So 70% of the cases,
the more competent-looking person
won the election.
Another thing that our brains use,
our unconscious minds,
to fill in our social perception is touch.
I said that people
are inherently very social animals.
In fact, all these primates - I'm showing
four different kinds of primates
engaged in social touching behavior.
The non-human primates tend
to touch each other for hours a day.
It's something they need physically
to clean themselves,
but that would be accomplished
in 10, 20 minutes a day,
yet they touch each other for hours a day
because touch helps create a sense
of bonding and social cooperation.
In fact, scientists have recently found
that people have specialized nerves,
especially in the forearms and the face,
that seem to be there just to transmit
the social pleasure of touching.
So the question is,
as we form our view of the world,
What kind of context does this add?
How does this affect
our judgement of the world
whether or not we're being touched?
A group of French scientists, of course,
did this interesting experiment.
They hired a few very handsome
young Frenchmen
to stand on a street corner
in Northern France
and proposition all the single
young women who walked by.
They stood there,
and they read the same script -
this is the translation of the script -
to all the women.
They gave their name,
asked for the women's phone number.
But to half of the women,
they gave a very light half-second touch
on the elbow or the shoulder.
And to the other half,
they didn't touch at all.
In exit interviews -
they intercepted the women later -
most of them didn't even remember
having been touched.
But did this signal affect the context
of how they viewed the person
and the degree to which
they would agree to a date?
And the answer is yes:
it doubled it, from 10% to 20%.
This has been repeated
in many other contexts.
For instance, waiters get higher tips
if they briefly touch the customers,
and people taking surveys get more people
to agree to take the survey on the street
and take some time out,
and in many other areas.
Now, normally when I explain these ideas,
I like to do a little experiment
on the group, but it wasn't possible here.
so I'll just tell you
about the experiment.
I ask people to look at this hotel room
and this hotel, and I give them some data.
I tell them it's in Tahiti,
and it's a one bedroom,
a little one bedroom cottage, etc.
I ask them what they would expect
to pay for the room in Tahiti.
I get very dramatic results,
but I ask the first group -
I divide them into two groups -
I ask the first group, before I ask them
to tell me what the room costs,
I ask them this question:
Does this room cost
more than $5,500 a night?
And the second group, before I ask them
to write what the room costs,
I ask them this question:
Does it cost more than $55 a night?
Now, from the data they'd seen,
it's pretty clear the room
is not $5,500 a night,
not anywhere near that,
and that it's a lot more than $55 a night.
So you would think
these are throwaway questions.
But actually, these questions
exercise a certain subliminal effect
on the audience.
And the ones who,
by the way, saw this question
did not see this and vice versa.
So they only saw the one
in the group that I assigned them to.
The question is,
How does this context affect
their actual assessment of the room,
their perception
of what that room is worth?
Here's the answer
from several groups that I've done.
So typically, they'll guess around $1,000
if they saw the higher question first,
and they'll guess around $200 to $300
if they saw the lower question.
So this simple throwaway question
provides the context that changes
their perception of the room,
just like the checkerboard
provided the context
and the words in the backward song
provided the context.
So let me just end the talk
with this quote by Carl Jung:
"These subliminal aspects
of everything that happens to us
may seem to play little part
in our daily lives,
but they are the almost invisible roots
of our conscious thoughts."
Thank you.
(Applause)
أن A وB متماثلان.
Michael Shermer's group،
trois champs scientifiques.
Traditionnellement,
vont clarifier mes propos.
Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven.
Ça ne démarre pas. Je ré-essaie.
(Musique)
Ne t'alarme pas s'il y a de l'agitation
dans la haie.
C'est le nettoyage de printemps
pour la Reine de Mai.
Oui, tu peux choisir entre deux chemins,
mais au bout du compte,
tu as encore le temps...
(Musique à rebours : Stairway to Heaven)
(Musique)
[Oh. Voici mon doux Satan.
Celui dont le chemin me rendrait triste
celui dont le pouvoir est Satan.
Il vous donne, donne 666.
Il y a ce petit atelier
où il vous fait souffrir,
triste Satan.]
(Musique à rebours : Stairway to Heaven)
Notre cerveau, notre esprit inconscient,
vraiment loin,
mais que c'est aussi
bien plus que 55 euros.
On pourrait croire
Merci.
(Applaudissements)
Ma a tudattalan elméről fogok beszélni,
és arról, hogyan hat viselkedésünkre
és a világképünkre,
különösen társadalomfelfogásunkra.
Annak meghatározásával kezdem,
hogy mit értek tudattalanon.
Tudattalan folyamatokon
ma a tudósok azokat értik,
melyek először is közrehatásunk nélkül –
legalábbis tudatos közrehatásunk
nélkül, önműködően mennek végbe.
Nem tudatosodnak bennünk.
Akaratunk nem kell hozzájuk,
és jobbára irányíthatatlanok.
Ezért nem is értjük, mi befolyásol minket,
és gyakran képtelenek vagyunk elkerülni
a belőlük fakadó magatartást.
De tisztázzuk:
ez nem a freudi tudatalatti.
A freudi tudatalatti elméletében
motivációs vagy érzelmi okból
a tudattalan rejtve marad előlünk,
és önelemzéssel
vagy terápiával tárható fel.
A tudattalan modern felfogása
ettől lényegesen eltér.
Ez úgy fejlődött, hogy segítsen
nekünk eligazodni a világban,
az észlelés világában, társadalmunkban.
A folyamat agyunkban megy végbe,
s velejárója, hogy tudatos
elménknek elérhetetlen.
Amiről beszélni fogok,
az a szociális idegtudomány területe.
A szociális idegtudományba
három terület tartozik.
Hagyományosan a szociálpszichológia,
amely pszichológia személyek
egymásra hatását vizsgáló területe,
továbbá a kognitív pszichológia,
amely a gondolkodásunk tudománya.
De a 90-es évek közepén új terület
jelent meg: az idegtudomány.
Az idegtudomány főként
több új technikán alapul,
de közülük az egyik van túlsúlyban,
az fMRI, azaz a funkcionális mágneses
rezonanciavizsgálati képalkotás.
Elég bonyolultan hangzik,
de az MRI-t orvosi vizsgálatokból
talán már ismerhetik.
Az MRI pompás képet ad belső szerveikről.
A funkcionális szó azért van előtte,
mert azt is megmondja, mikor megy
végbe valami az agyunkban,
az agy mely része dolgozik.
Itt ez látható.
Ez teljesen forradalmasította
a pszichológiát,
mert a modern és szociális
idegtudomány vagy pszichológia,
ami ebből nőtt ki, nemcsak
magatartási kutatásokra támaszkodik,
hanem a kutatásokat
az agyi folyamatokkal is összeköti.
Az elméleteket jobban konkretizálja,
és jobban közelíti
a kemény tudományok felé.
Mutatok egy példát az fMRI-re
és működésére,
az általa elérhető eredményre.
E kutatást Berkeleyben végezték.
Az alanyoknak diákat mutattak;
négyet láthatnak itt belőlük.
Az alanyok szemüvegen át nézték őket,
eközben az fMRI-ben feküdtek.
Az agyukból, nem a diákon lévő adatokból
nyertek információt a kutatók:
kizárólag agyukból olvasták ki,
nevezetesen a látókéregből
és agyuknak a látott témához
kapcsolódó részéből.
A számítógép feladata volt újraalkotni
az alanyok által látott diákat,
ez olyan, mint a gondolatolvasás.
A számítógép az összes adatból kiindulva
a hatmillió képet tartalmazó
adatbázist átnézve
kiválasztotta a leginkább hasonlókat.
Nagyon hasonló lett,
nemcsak az elrendezés és a diák fizikai
adatai, hanem téma szerint is;
ez olyan, mint a gondolatolvasás.
Két szempontból beszélek
ma a tudattalan elméről:
a fizikai érzékelés és a társadalmi
érzékelés szempontjából.
A lényeg az, hogy úgy
alkotunk képet másokról,
társadalmi, üzleti, pénzügyi
helyzetekről, hogy eközben
nemcsak tudatos gondolatainkra,
hanem tudatalatti elménkre is alapozunk.
Az érzékszervi érzékelés
szemléltetésével kezdem,
mert az sokkal inkább megragadható,
és előadásban könnyebben szemléltethető.
Azért, mert hasonlóan alkotjuk újra
a valóságot
korlátozott számú adatból mind
fizikai, mind társadalmi érzékeléskor.
Szeretném, ha megértenék
a vizuális és az auditív érzékeléssel,
valamint emlékezetünkkel
s társadalmi érzékelésünkkel kapcsolatban,
hogy ezek nem a szó szerinti valóság,
hanem valami, ami agyunkban jön létre
abból, amit tapasztalunk
és még sok egyébből:
a környezetből, reményből,
sőt még a vágyból is.
Szeretném, ha megértenék,
hogy a világról alkotott képünket
jobbára a tudattalan feldolgozás vezérli.
Íme egy példa.
Ezt észlelik, mikor pl. utat látnak.
Nem pontosan ez kerül a retinájukra.
A retinájukra kerülő kép
életlenebb, így néz ki.
A sárgafolt hozzáadódott,
hogy megmutassa, hová néz az illető.
A fekete pötty nem adódott hozzá.
Itt csatlakozik a látóideg a retinához;
itt egyáltalán nincs adat.
Szemük e homályos adatokat
zökkenőmentesen, önműködően,
beavatkozásunk nélkül
valamilyen éles képpé változtatja.
Hadd szemléltessem jobban ezzel a diával.
Ez itt egy sakktábla,
és nyilván látják a B betűt a téglalapban.
Fehér négyszögnek látszik.
Az A betű a téglalapban
fekete négyszögnek látszik.
Rögtön elárulom, hogy valójában
az A és a B teljesen egyforma,
ezért az A-ból és B-ből eredő fény,
amit a képernyőn látnak,
teljesen egyforma.
Most próbálják meg tudatos
elméjükkel ezt felülírni!
Mondtam, hogy ez önműködő,
nem szabályozható folyamat.
Próbálják A-t és B-t
azonos színűnek látni!
Kiderül, hogy képtelenek rá.
Miért látjuk világosabbnak B-t, mint A-t?
A környezete miatt.
Tudatalattijuk tekintetbe veszi
a fénykép környezetét,
a B-t fehér négyszögnek,
az A-t fekete négyszögnek láttatja.
Hívhatjuk ezt optikai csalódásnak,
de ez inkább ajándék,
mert nem akarjuk, hogy egész életünkben
egy-egy érzékszervi adatot felfogva
időnként értelmezésük végett
meg kelljen állnunk,
majd a fény- és sötétség adataiból
újra fel kelljen építenünk a mintázatot.
Ha nem hisznek nekem,
hogy csak ezt kitaláltam,
eltávolítom a környezetet.
Figyeljék a képernyőn,
mi történik az A-val és B-vel,
mikor a sakktáblát
mint környezetet eltávolítom.
A környezet nélkül látható,
hogy A és B egyforma.
Köszönöm.
(Nevetés)
(Taps)
Ha 18 percnél több időm
lenne..., de nincs.
Ez Barack Obama képe, fölismerik.
Ezzel szemléltetem a mentális feldolgozás
társadalmi összetevőjét.
Ha Obama két képére néznek,
valószínűleg hasonlítanak rá,
csak fejjel lefelé állnak.
De társadalmi érzékelésünk,
kölcsönhatásunk
kiemelkedően lényeges,
ezért agyunk működése többnyire
elősegíti a társadalmi érzékelést.
A képek valójában nagyon is eltérők,
nem nagyon hasonlítanak egymásra,
de társadalmi érzékelésünk
nem teljes sebességgel működik,
mert a képek fejre vannak állítva.
Nem úgy vagyunk megalkotva,
hogy valakit fejre állítva nézzünk,
hacsak jógaoktatóként nem szoktunk hozzá,
ezért nem vesszük észre a különbséget.
De mi lesz, ha visszafordítjuk őket?
Ha utcán találkoznának ezzel a fickóval,
megállapítanák, hogy Obamára
hasonlít, de valami történt.
(Nevetés)
Tán a választási kampány után
fog így kinézni.
(Nevetés)
Ránézve normális emberi lény.
Agyuk társadalmi része
az értelmezést önműködően végzi.
Megint visszafordítom,
és nézzék, mi történik?
Látják, hogy működik?
A hatás eltűnik,
mikor Obama képe fejre van állítva,
és visszaáll, mikor rendesen van.
(Nevetés)
Mutatok egy hallási példát is,
mert nemcsak a látottak
feldolgozása működik így,
hanem hallottaké is.
Vesszük a fülünkbe jutó hangadatokat,
és ugyanúgy, ahogy agyunk játszik velünk,
mikor képet és látványt hoz létre,
ugyanezt teszi a hangokkal is.
Lehet, hogy fölismerik ezt a dallamot,
a Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven számát.
Na, még egyszer próbáljuk meg!
(Zene: Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven)
És ha megrezzen a sövényed,
Ne aggódj
Hisz csak Május Királynője éled
Igen, két úton tudsz továbbmenni,
De hosszú távon
Még van időd...
A dalszöveg teljesen rendben lévő,
és mentálisan dekódolhatónak tűnik
az itt lejátszott 8–10 sora.
De lejátszom visszafelé.
Hallgassák visszafelé játszva!
Döntsék el,
elég okos volt-e a Led Zeppelin
olyan hangfájl létrehozásához,
amely előre- és visszafelé
játszva is értelmes?
(A Stairway to Heaven visszafelé játszva)
(Érthetetlen szöveg)
(Zene vége)
Visszafelé játszva pár sor a dalból.
Úgy gondolják, le tudnák írni a szöveget?
Vagy halandzsának hangzik?
Szerintem halandzsa,
mert tényleg értelmetlen beszéd.
De az agyukba jutó halandzsa
valami olyanná alakulhat,
tudatalattijukat segítve,
melynek környezete van.
Lejátszom újra, de szöveggel.
Ahogy a sakktábla kinézete megváltozott,
mikor a négyszögeket elvéve
más környezetbe helyeztem,
a dal is másként hangzik
visszafelé játszva, más környezetben.
Olvassák a szöveget!
(Zene)
[Éljen a drága Sátánom.
Az, kinek útja elszomorítana,
kinek hatalma a Sátán.
Majd megmutatja 666-tal.
Volt egy kicsi szerszámos fészer,
ahol megkínzott minket,
szomorú Sátán.]
Itt a valóság két változata.
A fizikájuk azonos:
ugyanaz a hangfelvétel,
de az érzékelés teljesen más,
mert agyuk valamit előállított belőlük.
Hogy bizonyítsam, milyen
önműködő és elkerülhetetlen,
és biztosan értik,
mennyire hasztalan, lejátszom újra.
Figyeljék a szavakat,
de úgy hallgassák, ahogy először!
Csak a halandzsaszöveget figyeljék!
(A Stairway to Heaven visszafelé játszva)
Képtelenek szabadulni tőle,
mert ha már hallották, el vannak rontva.
Ezért hiszik egyesek,
hogy visszafelé játszva
tudat alatti üzeneteket hallanak,
de ez nem így van.
A sceptics.com-on,
Michael Shermer csoportjában
szó van róla, mennyire hamis ez.
Rátérek a társadalmi észlelésre.
A lényeg, hogy ugyanezen trükkök,
melyeket elménk bevet vizuális
és auditív észlelés létrehozására,
a társadalmi észlelésnél is hatnak.
Agyunk pl. használja ehhez az imázst,
a megjelenítést.
Az emberek eleve igen szociális lények.
Fajként kihaltunk volna
társadalmi együttműködés nélkül.
Tudósok mai kutatásából kiderül,
hogy a kisebb társadalmi beágyazottságú,
a kisebb közösségi hálózatban élők
egészségileg nagyobb veszélyben vannak,
mint a bővebb közösségi hálózatban élők.
Akinek egészen kevés
közösségi hálózata van,
annak az egészsége akkora veszélyben van,
mint a dohányzóké vagy az elhízottaké.
A kutatásban két csoportot képeztek,
és két jelölt politikai
adatait mutatták be nekik:
egy republikánus és egy demokrata pártiét.
Az adatokban nemcsak
a nézeteik szerepeltek,
hanem mindkét jelölt képe is.
Az egyik csoportnak a demokratát mutatták,
aki a kép alapján alkalmasabbnak látszott,
és a kevésbé alkalmasnak tűnő
republikánust, előnytelen fotón,
majd a másik csoportnál képet cseréltek.
Nem a szépség, hanem a hozzáértés.
A két csoport abban különbözött,
hogy bár ugyanazokat az adatokat látták,
de a képek föl lettek cserélve.
Az volt a kérdés,
hogyan hat ez a szavazatukra?
A válasz: a szavazatkülönbség 14%.
Az alkalmasabb és a kevésbé
alkalmas fényképét megcserélve
14%-os volt az átszavazás, ami elég
a legtöbb választás eldöntéséhez.
Eléggé meggyőző bizonyíték.
Ez persze laborban történt,
de mi van a valóságban?
A Princeton pszichológusa
szerencsére ezt a valóságban is tesztelte.
Kormányzói és kongresszusi
helyekért vívott tucatnyi kampányból
demokrata és republikánus jelöltek képeit
gyűjtötte be.
Több száz főt hívott a laborjába,
és fényképpárokat mutatva
nekik megkérte őket,
ítéljék meg, melyik esetben
melyik jelölt alkalmasabb a posztjára.
akkor 50%-ban,
de a pszichológus 70%-ban eltalálta.
Tehát az esetek 70%-ában
az alkalmasabb kinézetű
nyerte a választást.
Agyunk, tudatalattink
a társadalmi észlelésünk pótlására
a tapintást is használja.
Mondtam, hogy eleve
szociális lények vagyunk.
Minden főemlős – négyet mutatok közülük –
alkalmazza a társadalmi tapintást.
csupán a tapintás társadalmi
örömének továbbítására.
Világnézetünk kialakításakor az a kérdés,
hogy ez milyen körülményt ad hozzá?
Hogyan hat ez a világ megítélésére,
mikor megérintenek minket, és mikor nem?
Persze, franciák végezték el
ezt az érdekes kísérletet.
Fölfogadtak egypár
vonzó fiatal francia férfit,
hogy álljanak ki egy utcasarokra
Észak-Franciaországban,
és szólítsanak le minden
arra járó magányos fiatal nőt.
Ugyanazt adták elő minden nőnek.
Ez itt a forgatókönyv fordítása.
Bemutatkoztak, és elkérték
a nő telefonszámát.
De a nők felének egy pillanatra
könnyedén megérintették
a könyökét vagy a vállát.
A másik felének nem.
Utána megkérdezték a nőket:
zömük még csak nem is
emlékezett az érintésre.
Vajon hatással volt-e ez a jelzés arra,
milyennek látták a férfit,
és arra, milyen mértékben
álltak rá a randira?
A válasz: igen, és kétszeresére,
10%-ról 20%-ra nőtt.
Más körülmények közt is megismételték.
Pl. pincérek nagy borravalót kapnak,
ha futólag megérintik a vendéget,
aki maga is végez kutatást, többeket
tud bevonni utcai kutatásokba,
hogy több időt szánjanak rá,
és még sok más területen.
Amikor ezekről beszélek,
szeretek kis csoportkísérleteket
végezni, de most nem lehet,
ezért csak elmondom a kísérletet.
Megkérem az alanyokat, nézzék meg
ezt a szállást, kapnak róla adatokat.
Elmondom, hogy Tahitiban van,
egyhálószobás kis bungaló stb.
Megkérdezem, mire számítanak,
mennyibe kerül a tahiti szoba?
Meglepő válaszokat szoktam kapni.
Két csoportom van.
Az első csoportnak
így teszem föl a szobaár kérdését:
"A szobaár több mint 5500 dollár/éj?"
A másik csoportot arra kérem,
hogy előbb írják le az árat.
A kérdés így hangzik:
"Többe kerül a szoba, mint 55 dollár/éj?"
A megismert adatokból a napnál világosabb,
hogy a szobaár nem lehet 5500 dollár/éj,
a közelében sem járhat,
de sokkal több 55 dollár/éjnél.
Azt hihetik, a kérdések komolytalanok.
Ám a kérdések valójában
tudat alatt hatnak a közönségre.
Akik ezt a kérdést látták,
nem látták a másikat, és fordítva.
Csak a saját csoportjuk kérdését ismerik.
Kíváncsiak vagyunk,
hogyan hat ez a körülmény
a szoba tényleges megítélésére,
felfogásuk szerint mennyit ér a szoba?
Íme több csoport válasza.
Akik az első árat látták először,
1000 dollár körül találgatnak.
Akik az alacsonyabbat,
azok 200–300 dollár körülire saccolják.
Az egyszerű komolytalan kérdés
olyan környezetet hozott létre,
amely módosítja
a szobaárról való felfogást,
mint ahogy a sakktábla esetében,
vagy a visszafelé játszott dal
teremtett más környezetet.
Végezetül Carl Jungtól idézek:
"E tudatalatti tényezőknek
a mindennapjaink dolgaiban
látszólag csekély a szerepük,
de majdnem láthatatlan gyökerei
tudatos gondolkodásunknak."
Köszönöm.

Olá! Hoje vou falar sobre o inconsciente
e como ele afeta seu comportamento
e sua percepção do mundo,
especialmente o mundo social.
Vou começar com a definição
de inconsciente.
O que os cientistas entendem
como processos inconscientes
são processos que, em primeiro lugar,
ocorrem sem esforço,
sem um esforço consciente,
e são automáticos.
Você não os percebe.
Não precisa de força
de vontade para criá-los,
pois estão além do nosso controle.
Por causa disso não entendemos
o que está nos influenciando
e não conseguimos evitar
os comportamentos que eles produzem.
Mas, deixe-me esclarecer,
esse não é o inconsciente de Freud.
O inconsciente de Freud é
o conceito do inconsciente
que está escondido de você por razões
motivacionais ou emocionais,
e pode ser revelado através
de introspecção ou terapia.
Mas a ideia moderna
de inconsciente é diferente.
É algo que evoluiu para nos ajudar
a navegar pelo mundo,
o mundo como o percebemos,
nosso mundo social,
Tradicionalmente, temos psicologia social,
que é o campo da psicologia referente
a como as pessoas interagem entre si,
e a psicologia cognitiva,
que é a ciência do pensamento.
Mas, na metade dos anos 1990,
surgiu o campo da neurociência.
Neurociência é, em grande parte,
baseada em uma tecnologia nova,
muitas tecnologias novas,
mas uma é a dominante,
a fMRI, ou Ressonância Magnética
Funcional, um termo difícil,
mas talvez você conheça
a Ressonância Magnética,
que faz uma imagem legal
dos seus órgãos internos.
Bem, a fMRI tem a palavra
"funcional" no início porque,
se essa imagem for do cérebro,
ela mostra qual parte está ativa.
Como este exemplo aqui.
Isso é uma revolução da psicologia
porque a neurociência moderna
e social, ou psicologia,
que surgiu disso não é baseada apenas
em estudos de comportamento,
mas também conecta tais estudos
ao que acontece no cérebro.
Isso torna os conceitos
muito mais concretos
e os transforma em ciência verdadeira.
Vou dar um exemplo de fMRI
e como ela funciona,
ou os resultados que pode apresentar.
Este é um estudo de Berkeley,
onde os participantes viram alguns slides,
como estes quatro slides aqui.
Os participantes usaram óculos de proteção
enquanto estavam deitados
em um aparelho de fMRI.
Os cientistas coletaram dados
de seus cérebros,
não os dados dos slides,
apenas leituras de seus cérebros
extraídas do córtex visual
e outras partes,
relacionadas ao tema dos slides
que eles estavam vendo.
E eles pediram ao computador
que reconstruísse o que estavam vendo,
como uma leitura da mente.
O computador pegou aqueles dados,
procurou em um banco de dados
com 6 milhões de imagens
e escolheu as mais semelhantes.
Como podem ver, ele chegou bem perto,
não apenas quanto ao layout
e aos dados físicos dos slides,
mas também quanto à temática,
foi mesmo uma leitura da mente.
Então hoje vou falar sobre o inconsciente
relacionado a duas áreas.
Uma é a nossa percepção física,
a outra é a social.
O ponto aqui é que nós criamos
uma imagem das outras pessoas,
situações sociais, negócios,
situações financeiras,
usando não só o pensamento consciente,
mas também o inconsciente.
Vou começar demonstrando
isso na percepção sensorial
porque ela é mais dramática e fácil
de descrever em uma palestra como esta,
e porque o jeito que reconstruímos
realidades a partir de dados limitados
são similares nas percepções
sensorial e social.
transforma nisso, algo bem claro.
Vou descrever com mais
detalhes neste slide.
e parando toda hora
para adivinhar o que significam,
e reconstruir o padrão a partir
dos dados sobre claro e escuro.
Caso pense que estou inventando,
deixe-me tirar o contexto.
Viram? O efeito desaparece
quando ele está de cabeça para baixo
e volta quando está na posição normal.
(Risos)
Agora vou mostrar um exemplo
relacionado à audição
para mostrar que esse processo
não ocorre apenas na visão,
mas na audição também.
Pegamos os dados que entram pelos ouvidos
e, assim como o cérebro brinca
construindo imagem e visão,
faz isso com áudio também.
Talvez vocês conheçam essa música.
É do Led Zeppelin, "Stairway to Heaven".
Não está tocando. Mais uma vez.
(Música: Led Zeppelin,
"Starway to Heaven")
(Música ao contrário: "Starway to Heaven")
(Letra incompreensível)
Agora você ouviu uma parte
da música ao contrário.
Se eu te desse um papel,
conseguiria escrever a letra?
Ou ela não faz sentido?
Eu acho que não faz sentido.
É porque realmente não faz sentido.
Mas essa coisa sem sentido
que entra no seu cérebro
pode ser transformada em alguma coisa
se o inconsciente tiver
um pouco de contexto.
Então vou tocar de novo
acrescentando uma letra.
Assim como o tabuleiro
de xadrez pareceu diferente
quando tirei os quadrados
e coloquei-os no contexto,
a música vai soar diferente
tocada ao contrário
agora que está dentro de um contexto.
Sigam a letra.
(Música)
Isso é para meu querido Satã.
Aquele cujo caminho me faria triste,
cujo poder é Satã.
Ele te dará, te dará 666.
Havia um pequeno galpão
onde ele nos fez sofrer.
triste Satã.
Agora temos duas versões da realidade.
A parte física é a mesma:
o mesmo áudio, nas duas vezes,
mas a percepção é muito diferente
porque agora sua mente
construiu algo baseado nisso.
Para mostrar que é
automático e inevitável,
e sei que entendem
que não precisa de esforço,
vou tocar de novo.
Acompanhe a letra, escute,
mas ouça da mesma maneira
que ouviu na primeira vez,
não as palavras, mas o resmungo, ok?
(Música ao contrário: "Starway to Heaven")
Neste estudo, cientistas reuniram
dois grupos de pessoas
e mostraram dados de um candidato
republicano e um democrata.
Os dados não eram apenas
sobre o que eles acreditavam
mas também continham
uma foto de cada candidato.
Para um grupo eles mostraram uma foto
em que o democrata parecia mais competente
e o republicano menos competente,
e para o outro grupo eles inverteram.
Não era beleza, e sim competência.
Os dois grupos estavam vendo
os mesmos dados sobre os candidatos,
mas eles tinham aparências diferentes,
e a pergunta foi: o quanto
isso influencia o voto?
A resposta é que houve 14%
de troca de votos.
A troca das fotos em relação
à aparência de competência
resultou na troca de 14% dos votos,
suficiente para virar muitas eleições,
e isso é uma evidência muito dramática.
Mas isso foi no laboratório.
E na vida real?
Felizmente, um psicólogo
da Universidade de Princeton
decidiu testar isso no mundo real.
Ele juntou pares de fotos de rostos
dos candidatos democratas e republicanos
em várias eleições
para Governo e Congresso.
Levou várias pessoas para um laboratório,
mostrou esses pares de fotos e pediu
que julgassem qual pessoa parecia
mais competente em cada caso.
Ele recomendou: "Se você reconhecer
um dos candidatos, não vote.
Estamos apenas olhando essas fotos
e escolhendo quem parece competente."
Então ele deu um passo ousado,
e previu o resultado
de cada uma dessas eleições
apenas com base em quem foi votado
como sendo mais competente.
E a pergunta é: qual foi
o nível de sucesso dele?
Se competência não tivesse efeito,
ele teria 50% de sucesso,
mas ele teve 70% de sucesso.
Em 70% dos casos,
a pessoa com aparência
mais competente ganhou a eleição.
Outra coisa que nosso cérebro,
nosso inconsciente,
usa para preencher nossa
percepção social é o tato.
Eu disse que as pessoas
são animais sociais.
De fato, todos estes quatro tipos
diferentes de primatas
tiveram comportamento
social relacionado ao toque.
Os primatas não humanos tendem
a tocar uns aos outros por horas.
Eles precisam disso,
fisicamente, para se limpar,
mas apenas 10 ou 20 minutos por dia.
No entanto, eles ficam
se tocando por horas
porque o toque ajuda a criar um senso
de união e cooperação social.
Cientistas descobriram recentemente
que as pessoas têm nervos especializados,
principalmente nos antebraços e rosto,
que parecem estar lá apenas
para transmitir o prazer social do toque.
A pergunta é: conforme formamos
nossa visão de mundo,
que contexto isso adiciona?
Como isto afeta nosso julgamento do mundo,
se estamos ou não sendo tocados?
Um grupo de cientistas franceses fez
um experimento interessante.
Eles contrataram alguns
franceses jovens e bonitos
para ficarem em uma esquina
no Norte da França
e cortejarem todas as mulheres
solteiras que passassem.
Eles ficaram lá, e usaram o mesmo roteiro,
esta é a tradução do roteiro,
para todas as mulheres.
Eles deram seus nomes e pediram
o telefone mas, em metade das mulheres,
eles tocaram o cotovelo ou ombro,
de forma rápida e suave.
Na outra metade eles não tocaram nada.
Eles interceptaram as mulheres
e fizeram entrevistas
e a maioria delas sequer
lembrava desses toques.
E a resposta é sim:
Eu pergunto quanto elas pagariam
pelo quarto no Taiti.
Consigo resultados bem dramáticos.
Eu os divido em dois grupos.
Antes de perguntar sobre o preço,
eu pergunto para o primeiro grupo:
a diária deste quarto
custa mais que US$ 5.500?
a diária custa mais que US$ 55?
A partir dos dados que eles viram,
está claro que o quarto
não custa US$ 5.500 por noite,
nada perto disso, e custa
muito mais que US$ 55.
Você acharia que essas
são perguntas casuais.
Mas na verdade elas exercem
um efeito subliminar na plateia.
E aqueles que viram esta pergunta
não viram esta pergunta, e vice versa.
Eles só viram a pergunta
do grupo em que estavam.
A pergunta é:
como esse contexto afeta
a verdadeira avaliação do quarto,
a percepção de quanto ele vale?
Aqui está a resposta de vários grupos.
Eles vão chutar em torno de US$ 1.000
e entre US$ 200 e US$ 300 se viram
a pergunta de valor menor.
Essa pergunta simples e casual
dá o contexto que muda a percepção
que eles têm do quarto,
deu o contexto.
Vou terminar a palestra
com esta citação de Carl Jung:
"Esses aspectos subliminares
de tudo que acontece conosco
parecem exercer um papel pequeno
nas nossas vidas,
mas eles são as raízes quase invisíveis
dos nossos pensamentos conscientes."
Obrigado.
(Aplausos)
Zdravo, danas ću pričati o podsvesti
i kako ona utiče na naše ponašanje
i na to kako vidimo svet,
posebno međuljudske odnose.
Počeću definisanjem
onoga što smatram podsvešću.
A ono što naučnici danas
posmatraju kao podsvesne procese
su procesi koji se, pre svega,
pojavljuju bez ikakve volje -
Niste ih svesni.
Ne treba vam nikakva volja
da biste ih stvorili,
i oni su manje-više van vaše kontrole.
Kao rezultat toga, mi u suštini
ne razumemo šta utiče na nas,
i često ne možemo izbeći
ponašanje koje proističe iz toga.
Ovo nije Frojdova definicija podsvesti,
samo da razjasnim.
Frojdova definicija podsvesti
je koncept podsvesti
koji je skriven od vas
iz motivacionih ili emotivnih razloga
i može se otkriti
kroz samoposmatranje ili terapiju.
Moderni koncept podsvesnog
se umnogome razlikuje od toga.
To je nešto što se razvijalo vremenom
kako bi nam pomoglo da upravljamo svetom,
našim perceptivnim svetom,
međuljudskim odnosima,
i nalazi se u onom delu mozga
koji je u suštini nedostupan našoj svesti.
Oblast o kojoj ću ja govoriti
je socijalna neuronauka.
Socijalna neuronauka
je u suštini kombinacija tri polja.
Tradicionalno,
imamo socijalnu psihologiju,
to je oblast psihologije
o interakciji ljudi,
i kognitivnu psihologiju,
nauku o tome kako razmišljamo.
Sredinom 1990-ih, nastalo je novo polje
nazvano neuronauka.
Neuronauka se uglavnom zasniva
na novoj tehnologiji,
mnogim novim tehnologijama,
ali jedna je naročito dominantna,
a koja se zove fMRI,
ili funkcionalna magnetna rezonanca,
što je malo teže izgovoriti,
ali verovatno vam je MR poznata
sa medicinskih testiranja -
ona vam daje lepu sliku
unutrašnjih organa.
Pa, fMR ima ispred tu reč „funkcionalna”,
zato što vam govori, kada skenirate mozak,
koji deo mozga radi.
Ovde to, na primer, možete videti.
Ovo je potpuno revolucionarna psihologija
zato što se moderna
socijalna neuronauka ili psihologija,
koja je izrasla iz ovoga,
ne bazira samo na proučavanju ponašanja,
nego povezuje ta proučavanja
sa onim što se dešava u mozgu.
To čini ove koncepte mnogo konkretnijim
i stvara od njih mnogo težu nauku.
Daću vam jedan primer
kako fMR funkcioniše,
i rezultate koji mogu da se postignu.
Ovo je istraživanje rađeno na Berkliju,
gde su ispitanicima
prikazani različiti slajdovi,
a ovde možete videti četiri slike.
Ispitanici su posmatrali
ove fotografije sa zaštitnim naočarima
dok su ležali u mašini za fMR.
Naučnici su uzeli podatke
iz njihovih mozgova -
ne sa slika, nego samo
očitavanja njihovog mozga -
iz njihovog vizuelnog korteksa
i iz drugih delova mozga
koji su povezani sa prirodom
onoga što su gledali,
i tražili su od kompjutera da rekonstruiše
slike koje su ljudi videli -
nešto kao čitanje misli.
Kompjuter je uzeo sve podatke,
pregledao bazu podataka
koja je imala 6 miliona slika
i izabrao one koje su bile najsličnije.
Kao što vidite, veoma su slične,
ne samo po obrisima
i fizičkim podacima sa slika,
nego i tematski, stvarno
je izgledalo kao čitanje misli.
Danas ću, dakle, pričati
o dve oblasti podsvesnog uma.
Jedna je naša telesna percepcija,
a druga je naša socijalna percepcija.
Suština ovoga je da mi stvaramo
sliku drugih ljudi,
socijalnih situacija,
poslovnih, finansijskih situacija,
koristeći ne samo našu svest,
već i podsvest.
Počeću sa opisivanjem toga
u senzornoj percepciji,
delimično zbog toga
što je senzorna percepcija
mnogo dramatičnija i lako se koristiti
za opisivanje u ovakvim govorima,
a delimično jer su načini
na koje rekonstruišemo stvarnost
na osnovu ograničenih podataka
slični u senzornoj
i socijalnoj percepciji.
Želim da odete sa saznanjem
da naše percepcije,
vizualna i auditivna percepcija,
naša sećanja i naša socijalna percepcija,
nisu bukvalno ono što je stvarnost,
nego nešto što je naš mozak napravio
od onoga što je stvarnost,
sa dodatkom mnogo drugih stvari,
kao što su okolnosti,
očekivanja, pa čak i želje.
Želim da odete sa saznanjem
da je način na koji doživljavamo svet
umnogome vođen tim podsvesnim procesom.
Evo primera.
Ovo spoznajete kada,
recimo, pogledate put.
To nije ono što sa čim se, u stvari,
suočava vaša mrežnjača.
Podaci sa kojima se suočava vaša mrežnjača
su mnogo nejasniji, izgledaju ovako.
Žuta tačka je dodata
da bi pokazala gde osoba gleda.
Crna tačka nije dodata.
To je mesto gde se optički nerv
povezuje sa mrežnjačom
i tu nema nikakvih podataka.
Vaše oko uzima ovakve nejasne podatke
i bez ikakvog napora, automatski
i bez ikakve vaše kontrole
pretvara to u ovo,
u nešto što je veoma jasno.
Pojasniću vam to konkretnije ovom slikom.
Ako posmatrate ovo, videćete tablu za šah,
i verovatno vidite pravougaonik
Zbog okolnosti.
Možete to nazvati optičkom iluzijom,
Gledajte u ekran
Hvala vam!
(Smeh)
(Aplauz)
Mogao bih, da imam više
od 18 minuta, ali nemam.
Ovo je slika Baraka Obame,
možda ga prepoznajete.
Ovim želim da vam ilustrujem
socijalnu komponentu
vašeg mentalnog procesa.
Kada pogledate ove dve Obamine slike,
obe izgledaju kao Obama
naopačke i prilično normalno.
Ali naša socijalna percepcija,
naša društvena interakcija,
je veoma važna za nas,
zato naš mozak uglavnom radi
da bi nam pomogao u socijalnoj percepciji.
Ove fotografije
se u suštini veoma razlikuju,
nisu baš slične,
ali vaša socijalna percepcija
ne funkcioniše u potpunosti
zato što je slika naopačke,
a mi nismo stvoreni
(Smeh)
Možda će tako izgledati posle izbora.
(Smeh)
Kada pogledate ovog tipa,
vidite normalno ljudsko biće.
Tada vaš socijalni deo mozga
interpretira to za vas,
i to radi automatski.
Ponovo ću ih okrenuti
i pogledajte šta se dešava.
Vidite kako to funkcioniše?
Efekat kao da nestaje kada je naopačke
i vraća se kada ga postavim uspravno.
(Smeh)
i možete mentalno dešifrovati
osam ili deset stihova
koji su pušteni unapred.
Sad ću je, za koji sekund,
pustiti unatrag.
Slušajte je unatrag.
Želim da pogledate
da li je Led Cepelin dovoljno pametan
da stvori audio-zapis
koji ima smisla kad se pušta
i unapred i unazad?
(Muzika unazad: „Stepenice ka nebu”)
(Nerazumljiv tekst)
kada sam sklonio kvadrate
i stavio ih u drugi kontekst,
pesma će vam zvučati drugačije unatrag,
sada kada je pustim uz kontekst.
Molim vas, čitajte usput.
(Muzika)
(Oh, mom slatkom sotoni,
Onom čiji bi me uski put rastužio,
čija je moć sotona.
On će vam dati, dati 666.
Postojala je mala šupa gde nas je mučio,
tužni sotona.)
Sad imamo dve verzije stvarnosti.
Fizički su iste -
imali ste isti audio-zapis
i prvi put i sada,
kontaminirani ste.
Zbog ovoga neki ljudi
stvarno misle da čuju poruke,
podsvesne poruke u pesmi puštenoj unatrag,
ali one u stvari ne postoje tu.
Ako odete na sceptics.com,
grupu Majkla Šermera,
možete videte neke diskusije
o tome kako je to netačno.
Ono na šta sad želim da pređem
jeste socijalna percepcija.
Suština je da svi ovi trikovi
kojima se mozak služi
kako bi stvorio našu vizualnu
i auditornu percepciju
utiču takođe i na socijalnu percepciju.
Jedna od stvari koju naš mozak koristi
da bi stvorio socijalnu percepciju, sliku,
jeste izgled.
Ljudi su po prirodi
veoma društvene životinje.
Ne bismo opstali kao vrsta
da nije bilo društvene saradnje,
i stvarno, kada naučnici
to proučavaju danas,
otkrivaju su da su ljudi
sa malo društvenih kontakata,
sa malom društvenom mrežom,
imaju mnogo veći zdravstveni rizik
od ljudi koji imaju
široku društvenu mrežu.
U stvari, imati veoma malo kontakata
je zdravstveni rizik jednako velik
kao pušenje ili gojaznost.
Prema ovom istraživanju,
naučnici su sakupili ljude,
dve grupe ljudi,
i pokazali im političke podatke
dva kandidata -
republikanca i demokrate.
Podaci nisu obuhvatali
samo šture podatke o njihovim uverenjima,
nego i slike svakog kandidata.
Jednoj grupi su pokazali demokrate
na slici na kojoj su izgledali stručnije,
a republikance manje stručne,
na ne tako laskavoj fotografiji,
dok su ih u drugoj grupi zamenili.
Ne radi se o lepoti,
već o izgledu stručnosti.
Jedina razlika između ove dve grupe
jeste da su gledali iste podatke,
ali sa drugačijim pogledom na kandidate,
a pitanje je bilo: koliko ovo utiče
na njihovo glasanje?
Odgovor je da to uticalo
na promenu glasova za 14%.
Znači, zamena fotografija,
od više do manje stručnog,
značila je promenu od 14%,
što je dovoljno da promeni većinu izbora,
što je veoma snažna činjenica.
Naravno, to je bilo u laboratoriji,
a šta je sa stvarnim svetom?
Na sreću, psiholog
sa Univerziteta Prinston
odlučio je da ovo testira
u stvarnom svetu.
Prikupio je parove slika sa licem
kandidata demokratske
i republikanske partije
u desetinama trka za guvernere i Kongres.
Uveo je stotine ljudi u laboratoriju,
pokazao im te parove
fotografija i tražio od njih
da jednostavno procene koja osoba
izgleda sposobnije u svakom od parova.
Rekao im je: „Ako prepoznate
nekog od kandidata, nemojte glasati.
Samo gledamo u te fotografije ljudi
i biramo ko izgleda stručnije.”
Zatim je napravio hrabar potez,
predviđajući ishod svakog od tih izbora
samo na osnovu toga
ko je izglasan kao stručniji.
A pitanje je: koliko je bio
uspešan u tome?
Da stručnost nema efekta,
imao bi uspeh od 50%,
ali on je imao stopu uspešnosti 70%.
Znači, u 70% slučajeva,
osoba koja je stručnije izgledala
dobila je izbore.
Još jedna stvar koju koristi
naš mozak, naša podsvest,
kako bi popunila
socijalnu percepciju je dodir.
Rekao sam da su ljudi
suštinski vrlo društvene životinje.
U stvari, svi ovi primati -
pokazujem četiri različite vrste primata
uključene u socijalno ponašanje dodirom.
Primati koji nisu ljudi svakoga dana
dodiruju jedni druge satima.
To je nešto što im je fizički
potrebno da bi se čistili,
ali to bi moglo da se postigne
u 10 ili 20 minuta dnevno,
pa opet, oni se dodiruju satima,
zato što dodir pomaže da se stvori
osećaj povezanosti i društvene saradnje.
U stvari, naučnici su nedavno otkrili
da ljudi imaju posebne nerve,
posebno u predelu podlaktice i lica,
kakav kontekst to dodaje?
Kako to utiče na našu procenu sveta,
da li nas neko dodiruje ili ne?
Grupa francuskih naučnika, naravno,
napravila je interesantan eksperiment.
Angažovali su nekoliko
veoma zgodnih mladih Francuza
da stoje na ulicama u severnoj Francuskoj
i prilaze svim mladim ženama
u mnogim drugim okolnostima.
Na primer, konobari dobijaju veći bakšiš
ako nakratko dotaknu mušteriju,
a ljudi koji vrše anketiranje na ulici
imaju mnogo više ljudi koji pristaju
i izdvajaju vreme,
kao i u mnogim drugim oblastima.
Obično kad objašnjavam ove ideje,
volim da sprovedem mali eksperiment
na grupi, ali to ovde nije moguće.
Zato ću vam samo prepričati eksperiment.
Kažem ljudima da pogledaju
ovu hotelsku sobu i hotel
i dam im neke podatke.
Kažem im da se nalazi na Tahitiju,
da je to jednosoban,
mali bungalov sa jednom sobom itd.
Pitam ih koliko očekuju da košta
ta soba na Tahitiju.
Dobijam vrlo dramatične rezultate,
ali pitam prvu grupu -
podelim ih u dve grupe -
prvu grupu pitam, pre nego
što im kažem koliko košta soba,
postavim im pitanje:
da li ova soba košta
više od 5 500 dolara za noć?
A drugoj grupi, pre nego što im kažem
da napišu cenu sobe,
postavim ovo pitanje:
Pretpostavili biste
da su to bezvezna pitanja.
U stvari, ova pitanja
imaju određeni podsvesni efekat
na publiku.
Uzgred, oni koji su videli ovo pitanje
nisu videli ovo i obrnuto.
Oni su, znači, videli samo ono pitanje
koje sam dodelio njihovoj grupi.
Pitanje je:
kako ove okolnosti utiču
na njihovu procenu sobe,
njihovu procenu koliko ta soba vredi?
Evo kakav je odgovor
nekoliko grupa sa kojima sam radio.
Uglavnom, tipovali su na oko 1 000 dolara
ako su prvo videli pitanje sa višim,
i na 200 do 300 dolara ukoliko
su videli pitanje sa manjim iznosom.
Tako da ovo nebitno pitanje
stvara kontekst koji menja
naš pogled na sobu,
baš kao što šahovska tabla stvara kontekst
i kao što reči pesme puštene unatrag
stvaraju kontekst.
Dozvolite mi da završim ovaj govor
rečima Karla Junga:
„Ovi podsvesni aspekti
svega što nam se dešava
možda se čini da imaju mali uticaj
na naš svakodnevni život,
ali oni su skoro nevidljivi koreni
naših svesnih misli.”
Hvala vam.
