I consider myself to be more of an introvert
than an extrovert.
I can flip on--
like, adrenaline can kick in
and I'm able to perform
extroversion really well.
And so I often try to find
my kindred spirits in the world,
and usually it's somebody who's, kind of,
standing off to the side.
There's a certain amount of mindfulness
that it requires to slow down enough
to really feel what it is to be present
with someone in a moment.

I've always had an inclination
towards seeing people who
might be easily unseen.
[LOUIE]
I remember it like it was yesterday.
It was a real calm, vivrant night.
It feels like the way it's painted--
it was a vibe...
like pink, summer...
125th Street, where we ran into Jordan.
I'm so proud to be here today,
to be a part of this
and be the face of it right now.
I love her.

I was walking the dogs, right?
And we met and I sat and posed for the photo.

I was walking around, shooting at night
and Louie and A-Thug
were packing up their stuff.
So while I was taking the pictures,
at some point, Louie asked,
"What's going on here?"
"Are you an artist?
A photographer?"
"What brings you to Harlem?"
And I was like, "Oh, I'm actually a painter,"
"I'm doing this project,"
blah blah blah.
And they were like, "Oh, yeah!"
"We'd love to participate!"
They had phenomenal energy from the beginning.
--Y'all turned this into a photo shoot.
I ain't mad at it.
[LAUGHS]
--Make use of it while you got the camera!
The actual moment of me photographing someone
is that speedy moment.
I'm in and out with them.
But I get to spend the most intimate time,
initially,
by myself in the studio,
re-engaging with what I felt from someone
in an instant.
I sit in here literally for hours alone, in
my own head--
to have the space to really delve into
my most intimate thoughts and feelings,
and to process the world around me,
which is what I do when I'm painting.
I spend a lot of time just looking
and deciding colors in advance,
and then mixing them meticulously
so that when I get to this point
I'm able to exert a certain amount of confidence.
My way of trying to reconnect with
the immediacy that happens
if you're sitting in front of somebody,
you know?
That you're working from life.
The camera, it's really become a liaison
between me and the sitter.
It gives me time to
slow down before I go fast.
In that moment with A-Thug and Louie,
I don't know if I noticed that "melanin" shirt
sitting on the table.
I'm quite sure I didn't
as I'm taking the pictures.
But it's only in retrospect,
as I took time to really study the environment
that they had created,
that I was like, "Whoa!"
"There are really prominent things
happening here."
His shirt saying,
"T.H.U.G., the hate you gave us,"
I also didn't notice until I started making
the painting.
I think that's a very powerful statement,
to wear it on your chest like a shield
that communities of color often have to create
in order to protect and honor ourselves.
[LOUIE]
I get the best feeling when I come outside
and somebody's wearing one of my t-shirts,
one of my hats.
Right here is a little bear I done drew out,
animated it with the little graphic design.
So, I've got to produce.
Like, making art into
wearable clothing right now.

Jordan, her work is on showcase.
You've got to go inside of an establishment.
I'm more of a street hustler,
I get it out right on the
cement concrete block.
She left a little event in my life,
like a nice little milestone.
Just dropped down and did something nice.

I have somehow found a way
to weasel myself into a one-percent opportunity
within the art market
that has proven, on so many levels,
that room for me
is few and far between,
as a young African-American woman
in a space that is primarily run by older
White men.
The history of this country is complicated.
The history of how art has moved through institutions,
and been valued, is complicated.
With access comes responsibility.
With visibility comes responsibility.

There are very few spaces where
Black men are being represented
outside of criminality and entertainment.
People probably pass the subjects in this
work everyday,
without acknowledging anything about them.
There is a value in just being.

El momento en que fotografío a alguien

Entro y salgo de ahí
Pero el momento más íntimo inicialmente
es sola, en el estudio
reanudando lo que sentí de alguien
en un instante.
Me siento aquí, literalmente, por horas
sola con mi cabeza
para tener el espacio de hurgar en mis más
íntimos pensamientos y sentimientos
y procesar el mundo a mi alrededor
que es lo que hago cuando pinto.
Paso mucho tiempo sólo observando,
decidiendo los colores por adelantado,
y luego los mezclo meticulosamente
cosa que cuando llego a este punto
puedo ejercer cierto nivel de confianza.

à voir les personnes

on est tombé sur Jordan.
Je suis tellement fier
d'être là aujourd'hui,
de faire partie de ce projet,
et d'en être le visage.

Je me baladais,
faisais des photos de nuit.
Louie et A-Thug remballaient.
Pendant que je prenais des photos,
à un moment donné, Louie m'a dit :
"Eh, qu'est-ce que tu fais ?"
"Tu es une artiste ?
Une photographe ?"
"Qu'est-ce que tu fais à Harlem ?"
Et je lui ai dit :
"Oh, en fait, je suis peintre."
"Je réalise un projet,"
etc.
Et ils m'ont répondu : "Ah, cool !"
"On aimerait y participer !"
Ils ont tout de suite eu
une énergie géniale.
--Ca a fini en séance photo.
Mais c'est pas grave.
[RIRES]
--Tu as ton appareil, profite-en !
Le moment précis
où je photographie quelqu'un,
tout se passe très vite.
J'arrive et je repars.
Mais je passe aussi des moments seule,
quand je suis au studio,
et que je revis ce qu'une personne
a dégagé, en une fraction de seconde.
J'y reste des heures, assise,
seule avec moi-même--
pour avoir la place de bien me plonger
dans mes pensées les plus intimes,
et pour intégrer le monde qui m'entoure.
C'est aussi ce que je fais quand je peins.
Je passe beaucoup de temps à observer,
et à décider à l'avance des couleurs,
pour ensuite les mélanger avec soin,
pour qu'à ce moment donné,
je sois capable d'être assez confiante.
C'est comme ça que j'essaie
de me connecter avec ce qui nous entoure,
quand on se trouve face à quelqu'un,
tu vois ?
Tu travailles à partir de la vie.
Mon appareil, c'est vraiment
un lien invisible
entre moi et la personne
assise en face de moi.
Ça me permet de ralentir,
avant d’aller vite.
Ce moment avec A-Thug et Louie,
je ne sais pas si j'avais remarqué
la chemise "mélanine" sur la table.
Je suis persuadée que non,
comme je prends des photos.
Mais avec le recul,
en prenant le temps d'observer
l'environnement qu'ils avaient créé,
je me suis dit : "Ouah !"
"Il y a vraiment des choses dingues
qui se passent ici."
Avec son T-shirt
"T.H.U.G., the hate you gave us,"
Je ne l'ai remarqué que lorsque
j'ai commencé à peindre.
Pour moi, c'est un message très fort
à porter sur sa poitrine,
comme un bouclier
que des communautés de couleurs
doivent souvent créer
pour se protéger et s'honorer.

C'est tellement gratifiant de sortir
et de voir quelqu'un
porter un de mes T-shirts
ou une de mes casquettes.
Ça, c'est un petit ours que j'ai dessiné,
que j'ai rendu vivant
avec des petits motifs graphiques.
Donc je dois créer.
Faire de l'art quelque chose
que l'on peut porter sur soi.

Jordan, son travail est exposé.
Toi, tu dois te produire
dans un établissement.
Moi, je me démarque dans la rue,
je présente tout directement sur le sol.
Elle est un petit souvenir dans ma vie,

Elle a débarqué et fait un truc sympa.

J'ai en quelque sorte trouvé un moyen
de m'approprier une opportunité rare
sur le marché de l'art.
Ça a prouvé
de plusieurs façons,
que les opportunités pour moi sont rares,
en tant que jeune femme afro-américaine,

par des hommes blancs.
L'histoire de ce pays est compliquée.
L'histoire qui relate la façon dont l'art
est passé d'institution en institution,
et est devenu important
est compliquée.
Avec l'accès vient la responsabilité.
Avec la visibilité, c'est la même chose.

Il y a très peu d'endroits où
les hommes noirs sont représentés
hors de la criminalité
et du divertissement.
Dans ce métier, on voit sans doute

fotografica!
Il momento in cui fotografo qualcuno
è quel momento veloce.
Sono fuori e dentro con loro.
Ma inizialmente ho dedicato il momento
più intimo,
con me stessa nello studio,
re-coinvolgendo me stessa in quello che
ho provato in quell'istante.
Mi sono seduta qui per ore da sola,
con i miei pensieri--
per avere lo spazio per veramente, ricercare
nei pensieri e sentimenti più intimi,
e per elaborare il mondo intorno a me,
che è quello che faccio quando dipingo.
Dedico molto tempo solo a guardare
e a decidere i colori in anticipo,
per poi mescolarli meticolosamente
così che quando arrivo a questo punto
riesco ad esprimere un certo ammontare di
fiducia.
Il mio modo di riconnetermi con l'immediatezza
che succede
quando ci siede di fronte a qualcuno,
mi capisci?
Che stai lavorando con la vita.
La macchina fotografica, è il tramite
tra me e il modello.
Mi da il tempo di andar piano
prima che inizio ad andare veloce.
In quel momento con A-Thung e Louie,
non so se ho notato quella magliatta "melanina"
seduta al tavolo.
Sono quasi sicura che non l'ho notata
mentre facevo le foto.
Ma solo in retrospettiva,
quando ho preso tempo per studiare l'ambiente
che loro hanno creato,
ero come, "Wow!"
"Ci sono delle cose molto prominenti
che accadono qui."
La sua maglietta che dice,
"T.H.U.G., quell' odio che ci date,"
Non l'ho notato finché non ho iniziato
a fare il dipinto.
Penso che questo sia un'affermazione
molto importante,
da indossare sul petto come uno scudo
che le comunità di colore spesso devono
creare
per proteggere ed onorare se stessi.

Mi sento bene quando esco
e vedo che qualcuno indossa una delle
mie magliette o cappelli.
Qui ho in piccolo orso che ho fatto,
animandolo con un piccolo disegno grafico.
Così, devo produrre.
Come, fare dell'arte su dei vestisti
che si indossano.
Un design di stile giovane.
E' arte che si indossa.
Jordan, il suo lavoro è in mostra.
Devi andare dentro ad un luogo.
Io sono più di strada,
porto l'arte direttamente sul cemento.
Ha lasciato un piccolo ricordo
come una piccola pietra miliare.
Appena accaduta e diventata qualcosa
di bello.

Ho trovato in qualche modo
la maniera di ottenere 1% nel
mercato dell'arte,
che ha dimostrato, a diversi livelli,
che c'è un posto raro per me,
come una giovane donna Afro Americana
in uno spazio che primariamente è usato da

La storia di questa nazione è complicata.

Я прогуливался, вечерняя съемка
и Луи и "Бандит" паковали свои вещи.
И пока я делал фотографии,
в какой-то момент, Луи спросил:
" Что здесь происходит?"
"Вы художник?
Фотограф?"
"Что вас привело в Гарлем?"
И я ответил: " Вообще-то я художник,"
"Я работаю над этим проектом,"
бла бла бла
И они отвечают: "Вот это Да!"
"Мы бы с удовольствием поучаствовали!"
С самого началау них была
феноменальная энергия.
Вы превратили это в целую фотосессию.
Не то чтобы я на это зол.

Используй это, пока у тебя есть камера!
В тот самый момент, когда
фотографируешь кого-то
в этот быстротечный момент.
Я сделал фото и пошел.
Но мне доводится провести очень
сокровенные моменты сначала,
когда я один, с своей студии,
заново погружаюсь в то, что я изначально
мгновенно почувствовал с кем-то.
Я сижу тут буквально часами один,
всвоей голове...
чтобы иметь возможность углубиться
во внутренние мысли и чувства,
и чтобы справиться с окружающим миром,
это то, что я делаю когда
занимаюсь живописью.
Я провожу много времени
просто рассматривая
и заранее выбирая цвета,
а затем тщательно их смешивая
так что когда я доберусь ло
этого момента...
Я могу выдавить из себя какое-то
количество уверенности.

碰巧遇見路易和A-Thug正在整理他們的東西
