9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In the summer of 2017, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a woman was murdered[br]by her partner in Sofia. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The woman, let's call her Vee, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was beaten for over 50 minutes 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 before she died. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The morning after, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 her neighbors told the press[br]that they heard her screams, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but they didn't intervene. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You see, in Bulgaria 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and many other societies, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 domestic violence is typically seen[br]as a private matter. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Neighbors, however, are quick to react[br]to any other kind of noise. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We wanted to expose and affect[br]the absurdity of this, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so we designed an experiment. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We rented the apartment[br]just below Vee's for one night, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and at 10pm, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Maxim, the artist in our group, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 sat on the drum set[br]we had assembled in the living room 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and started beating it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Ten seconds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Thirty seconds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Fifty seconds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A minute. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A light came on in the hallway. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One minute and 20 seconds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A man was standing at the door,[br]hesitant to press the bell. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One minute and fifty-two seconds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The doorbell rang, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a ring that could have saved a life. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Beat is our project exploring[br]the ominous silence 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 surrounding domestic violence. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We filmed the experiment[br]and it became instantly viral. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our campaign amplified[br]the voices of survivors 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who shared similar stories online. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It equipped neighbors[br]with specific advice, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and many committed to taking action. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In a country where every other week, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the ground quietly embraces[br]the body of a woman 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 murdered by a partner or a relative, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we were loud and we were heard. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am an activist, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 passionate about human rights innovation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I lead a global organization[br]for socially engaged creative solutions. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In my work, I think about[br]how to make people care and act. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am here to tell you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that creative actions can save the world, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 creative actions and play, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I know it is weird to talk about play[br]and human rights in the same sentence, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but here is why it is important. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 More and more, we fear[br]that we can't win this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Campaigns feel dull, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 messages drown, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people break. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Numerous studies, including a recent one[br]published by Columbia University, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 show that burnout and depression[br]are widespread amongst activists. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Years ago, I myself was burned out. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In a world of endless ways forward,[br]I felt at my final stop. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So what melts fear or dullness or gloom? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Play. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 From this very stage, psychiatrist[br]and play researcher Dr. Stuart Brown 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 said that nothing[br]lights up the brain like play, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that the opposite of play is not work, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's depression. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So to pull out of my own burnout, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I decided to turn my activism[br]into what I call today playtivism. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When we play, others want to join. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Today, my playground[br]is filled with artists, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 techies, and scientists. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We fuse disciplines[br]in radical collaboration. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Together, we seek new ways[br]to empower activism. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our outcomes are not[br]meant to be playful, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but our process is. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 To us, play is an act of resistance. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For example, Beat, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the project I talked about earlier, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is a concept developed by a drummer[br]and a software engineer 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who didn't know each other[br]two days before they pitched the idea. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Beat is the first winner in our lab series 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where we pair artists and technologists[br]to work on human rights issues. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Other winning concepts[br]include a pop-up bakery 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that teaches about fake news through[br]beautiful but horrible-tasting cupcakes 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or a board game that puts you[br]in the shoes of a dictator 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so you get to really grasp the range[br]of tools and tactics of oppression. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We did our first lab[br]just to test the idea, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to see where it cracks[br]and if we can make it better. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Today, we are so in love with the format[br]that we put it all online 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for anyone to implement. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I cannot overstate the value[br]of experimentation in activism. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We can only win[br]if we are not afraid to lose. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When we play, we learn. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A recent study published[br]by Stanford University 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about the science[br]of what makes people care 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 reconfirms what we have[br]been hearing for years: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 opinions are changed[br]not from more information 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but through empathy and using experiences. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So learning from science and art, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we saw that we can talk about[br]global armed conflict through light bulbs, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or address racial inequality in the US 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 through postcards, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or tackle the lack of even[br]one single monument of a woman in Sofia 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by flooding the city with them, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and with all these works 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to trigger dialogue,[br]understanding, and direct action. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Sometimes, when I talk about[br]taking risks and trying and failing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the context of human rights, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I meet raised eyebrows, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 eyebrows that say, "How irresponsible," 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or, "How insensitive." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 People often mistake play for negligence. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is not. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Play doesn't just grow our armies stronger[br]or spark better ideas. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In times of painful injustice, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 play brings the levity we need[br]to be able to breathe. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When we play, we live. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I grew up in a time 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when all play was forbidden. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My family's lives were crushed[br]by a communist dictatorship. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For my aunt, my grandfather, my father, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we always held two funerals, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 one for their bodies, but,[br]years before that, one for their dreams. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Some of my biggest dreams are nightmares. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have a nightmare that one day[br]all the past will be forgotten 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and new clothes will be dripping[br]the blood of past mistakes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have a nightmare 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that one day the lighthouses[br]of our humanity will crumble, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 corroded by acid waves of hate. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But way more than that, I have hope. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In our fights for justice and freedom, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I hope that we play, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that we see the joy[br]and beauty of us playing together. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's how we win. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Thank you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Applause)
