WEBVTT 00:00:11.220 --> 00:00:14.610 In the last course of my graduate program 00:00:14.630 --> 00:00:18.460 we created an online campaign video on human trafficking. 00:00:18.735 --> 00:00:20.585 My professor at the time said, 00:00:20.825 --> 00:00:23.995 "You're not going to change the world through this project, 00:00:23.995 --> 00:00:28.695 but you're going to add a spoon of sugar into the salty ocean to sweeten it up." 00:00:29.218 --> 00:00:34.008 You may think making peace starts with presidents, prime ministers, 00:00:34.008 --> 00:00:37.278 leaders of some countries shaking hands together, 00:00:37.278 --> 00:00:41.038 or the United Nations, NGO workers tirelessly working 00:00:41.038 --> 00:00:44.718 in the less developed field for the poorest of the poor. 00:00:44.918 --> 00:00:49.378 I was thinking the same before I started my graduate program. 00:00:49.804 --> 00:00:53.884 But today you will learn that peace actually starts with you. 00:00:55.038 --> 00:00:59.248 I came to South Korea in order to conduct my field research 00:00:59.248 --> 00:01:01.118 on the issue of "comfort women." 00:01:01.740 --> 00:01:06.470 "Comfort women" is a euphemism coined by the Japanese Imperial Army 00:01:06.470 --> 00:01:08.620 before and during World War II. 00:01:09.037 --> 00:01:13.657 There are women who were forced into sexual slavery by the army 00:01:13.657 --> 00:01:16.908 and a majority of them are from here, South Korea. 00:01:17.198 --> 00:01:23.038 But there are also survivors from China, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. 00:01:24.419 --> 00:01:26.909 When I told my friends and family in Japan 00:01:26.909 --> 00:01:30.769 that I would research the issue of comfort women, 00:01:30.769 --> 00:01:35.309 they usually say, "You're going to deal with such a difficult issue." 00:01:36.553 --> 00:01:40.173 I asked my mother why and she answered, 00:01:40.325 --> 00:01:44.505 "I understand that the Japanese Army did something terrible in the past, 00:01:44.979 --> 00:01:48.529 but that's an embarrassing part we all don't want to touch." 00:01:50.240 --> 00:01:53.080 Many of you probably heard last year 00:01:53.090 --> 00:01:57.240 that the government of Japan and South Korea reached an agreement 00:01:57.250 --> 00:01:59.340 on the issue of comfort women. 00:01:59.982 --> 00:02:02.342 Under the agreement, the government of Japan 00:02:02.382 --> 00:02:07.702 will pay one billion yen to a foundation that the South Korean government 00:02:07.732 --> 00:02:11.042 will establish to offer health and other services 00:02:11.062 --> 00:02:13.502 to the elderly former comfort women. 00:02:14.219 --> 00:02:19.659 In addition, the government of Japan asked for removal of the statue 00:02:19.809 --> 00:02:24.499 in front of the Japanese Embassy, which pays tribute to the comfort women, 00:02:24.679 --> 00:02:28.689 saying that the agreement was made to stop future generations 00:02:28.689 --> 00:02:31.049 from having to keep apologizing. 00:02:31.505 --> 00:02:35.745 On the contrary, I believe that the statue should not be removed 00:02:35.745 --> 00:02:39.545 and the issue of comfort women should continue to be discussed 00:02:39.545 --> 00:02:44.745 and passed on to the future generations in order to not repeat the history. 00:02:46.677 --> 00:02:51.517 Sexual and gender-based violence is not something that happened in the past 00:02:51.527 --> 00:02:55.457 but it also proliferates in modern everyday life. 00:02:55.886 --> 00:02:58.476 Women are disproportionately suffering 00:02:58.506 --> 00:03:01.926 because violence is often gendered 00:03:01.926 --> 00:03:05.206 in attacks such as rape and domestic violence. 00:03:05.737 --> 00:03:08.437 According to the World Health Organization, 00:03:08.587 --> 00:03:11.027 one in three women worldwide 00:03:11.027 --> 00:03:15.587 suffer from physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime. 00:03:15.839 --> 00:03:20.599 Here in South Korea, the number of sexual assaults is increasing. 00:03:20.891 --> 00:03:25.871 However, an expert says that the number is just the tip of the iceberg, 00:03:26.455 --> 00:03:29.125 as many women do not come forward 00:03:29.155 --> 00:03:33.925 because they are afraid that they are going to be insulted once again. 00:03:34.834 --> 00:03:37.494 The situation is very similar in Japan. 00:03:37.834 --> 00:03:41.284 Many assault survivors do not want to come forward 00:03:41.314 --> 00:03:44.414 because they feel ashamed or insulted. 00:03:45.210 --> 00:03:49.850 Male-centered patriarchal societies makes it difficult to talk 00:03:49.860 --> 00:03:52.400 about the experience of sexual assaults. 00:03:52.732 --> 00:03:58.282 Because being sexually assaulted also enforces a form of stigma in our society. 00:03:59.686 --> 00:04:04.086 I truly admire all the Korean women who have come forward 00:04:04.086 --> 00:04:06.806 and started to talk about their painful experiences 00:04:06.806 --> 00:04:08.516 as comfort women. 00:04:08.956 --> 00:04:11.396 We can only imagine how hard it is 00:04:11.396 --> 00:04:15.286 but then to talk about experiences in public, 00:04:15.286 --> 00:04:19.036 being raped over and over by Japanese soldiers 00:04:19.066 --> 00:04:22.896 and never being taken care of even when they became sick. 00:04:23.295 --> 00:04:27.055 There are also many women who are abandoned and murdered 00:04:27.055 --> 00:04:28.415 at the end of the war. 00:04:29.532 --> 00:04:31.422 The surviving comfort women 00:04:31.422 --> 00:04:35.372 are still fighting for their rights and restoration of their dignity. 00:04:35.675 --> 00:04:38.305 And a few survivors are participating 00:04:38.315 --> 00:04:42.215 in the weekly demonstration in front of the Japanese Embassy 00:04:46.055 --> 00:04:48.355 calling for the Japanese government 00:04:48.385 --> 00:04:51.025 to take legal responsibility for its cause. 00:04:52.716 --> 00:04:55.416 As a final assignment of my course 00:04:55.446 --> 00:04:58.906 we wanted to create an online campaign video 00:04:58.926 --> 00:05:01.896 to make a powerful impact on the viewers. 00:05:01.906 --> 00:05:06.396 Together with my colleagues, Arunima, Caroline, and Rebekka, 00:05:06.426 --> 00:05:10.176 we wanted to raise awareness of child trafficking. 00:05:10.512 --> 00:05:14.132 This was our effort to sweeten the ocean just a little bit. 00:05:14.512 --> 00:05:15.577 [Video] 00:05:15.607 --> 00:05:17.417 (Beeping) 00:05:36.152 --> 00:05:38.402 (Sizzling) 00:05:50.935 --> 00:05:53.295 (Scraping) 00:06:06.048 --> 00:06:08.718 [According to the International Labor Organization 00:06:08.718 --> 00:06:10.848 an estimated 17.2 million children 00:06:10.848 --> 00:06:12.908 are in forced domestic servitude worldwide.] 00:06:13.077 --> 00:06:16.087 [These children are as young as five.] 00:06:17.664 --> 00:06:20.544 [It happens all over the world.] 00:06:21.077 --> 00:06:25.567 [You can be part of the solution!] 00:06:32.181 --> 00:06:34.081 The child domestic servitude 00:06:36.821 --> 00:06:39.691 is a form of modern day slavery. 00:06:39.691 --> 00:06:43.771 Millions of children, all over the world, are being trafficked into servitude 00:06:43.771 --> 00:06:47.311 with a false promise of education and a better life. 00:06:47.901 --> 00:06:51.651 Many of these children work up to 18 hours a day. 00:06:52.958 --> 00:06:54.968 Often, they are not paid. 00:06:55.379 --> 00:06:59.939 The world will likely turn its back on those exploited children 00:06:59.939 --> 00:07:01.806 unless someone has the courage 00:07:01.806 --> 00:07:04.406 to question the practice and its morality. 00:07:04.911 --> 00:07:10.221 Even then, changes in cultures and laws sufficient to stop child trafficking 00:07:10.221 --> 00:07:11.911 will likely come slowly. 00:07:12.369 --> 00:07:15.389 Take the issue of comfort women, for example, 00:07:15.389 --> 00:07:17.539 many of them were as young as 12 00:07:17.549 --> 00:07:20.059 when they were forced into sexual slavery. 00:07:21.003 --> 00:07:23.553 They were not able to speak about their experiences 00:07:23.553 --> 00:07:26.093 under the strong patriarchal society. 00:07:26.643 --> 00:07:31.543 But with democratization of South Korea and the feminist movement 00:07:31.543 --> 00:07:36.823 they started to speak in public for the first time in the 1990s. 00:07:37.318 --> 00:07:42.758 That is when they opened the door to allow the taboo issue of comfort women 00:07:42.758 --> 00:07:46.338 to become an issue discussed in South Korea, Japan, 00:07:46.338 --> 00:07:47.988 and the rest of the world. 00:07:49.321 --> 00:07:51.781 My work started from curiosity. 00:07:52.270 --> 00:07:54.030 I had several questions: 00:07:54.501 --> 00:07:56.841 Why are elderly women still fighting 00:07:56.841 --> 00:07:59.661 for their rights and restoration of their dignity? 00:08:00.243 --> 00:08:04.633 How and why did the United States play a part in reaching this agreement? 00:08:05.141 --> 00:08:07.591 Who truly has power in this world? 00:08:08.566 --> 00:08:13.246 My hope is also to add a spoon of sugar in this salty ocean. 00:08:13.745 --> 00:08:19.485 I would like to seek an appropriate way of honoring the lives of women 00:08:19.715 --> 00:08:23.995 not only the surviving elders but also the many young women 00:08:23.995 --> 00:08:25.665 who were abandoned and murdered 00:08:25.665 --> 00:08:28.675 in the battle field outside of their own country. 00:08:29.030 --> 00:08:32.920 By doing so, I believe we can have a better conversation 00:08:32.920 --> 00:08:37.250 towards sexual and gender-based violence prevailing in our countries. 00:08:39.067 --> 00:08:43.687 So, let us become curious about exploitation in today's world. 00:08:44.007 --> 00:08:47.727 Let us question why the world is the way it is right now. 00:08:48.419 --> 00:08:52.899 Why are some countries rich and powerful while others are not? 00:08:53.406 --> 00:08:57.324 Why are certain populations being discriminated against? 00:08:57.354 --> 00:09:00.524 Why are certain people doing certain jobs in your community? 00:09:01.173 --> 00:09:04.353 Why are there no women in boardrooms? 00:09:04.613 --> 00:09:07.443 Why is your friend being bullied in your classroom? 00:09:07.880 --> 00:09:11.430 Then reach out your hand to people who need your help. 00:09:11.720 --> 00:09:14.570 Your help might be as tiny as a spoon of sugar. 00:09:14.965 --> 00:09:19.945 But if many of us do it together, I think we can change the world. 00:09:20.114 --> 00:09:23.744 Then you'll see that peace actually starts with you. 00:09:23.964 --> 00:09:25.484 Thank you so much. 00:09:25.504 --> 00:09:27.924 (Applause)
