I am going to talk about consciousness.
Why consciousness?
It is curiously a neglected subject
both in our scientific
and our philosophical culture.
Why is that curious?
It's most important aspect of our lives
for a very simple logical reason,
namely, it is a necessary condition
on anything being important in our lives
that we are conscious.
[If] you care about science,
philosophy, music, art, whatever,
it is no good if you are
a zombie or in a coma, right?
So consciousness is number one.
That's the first reason
[that] we are talking about it.
The second reason is that when people
do get interested in it,
as I think they should,
they tend to say
the most appalling things!
I am not going to attempt
to conceal from you
some of the most appalling things
that have been said about it;
and even when they are not saying
appalling things
[and] they are really trying
to do serious research,
well, it's been slow,
progress has been slow.
Let me tell you a little bit
about some of the difficulties.
When I first got interested
in this, I thought
it's a straightforward problem in biology
[so] let's get these brain stabbers
to get busy
and figure out how it works in the brain.
I went over to UCSF and talked
to all heavy-duty neurologists there
and they showed some impatience,
as scientists often do when you ask them
embarrassing questions,
and the thing that struck me
is that a very famous neurobiologist
said exasperated:
"Look, in my discipline,
it's OK to be interested in consciousness,
but get tenure first!
(Laughter)
I've been working on this for a long time
and now you might actually get tenure
by working on consciousness,
and if so, that's a real step forward!
Why then, is this curious reluctance
and curious hostility to consciousness?
I think it's a combination of two features
of our intellectual culture
that like to think
they are opposing each other
but in fact they share
a common set of assumptions.
Consciousness is not a part
of the physical world
but it's part of the spiritual world,
it belongs to the soul,
and the soul is not a part
of the physical world.
That's the tradition of God,
the soul, and immortality.
There is another tradition
that is opposed to this
but excepts the worst assumption.
That tradition thinks
we are heavy-duty scientific materialists,
consciousness is not a part
of the physical world,
either it doesn't exist at all
or it is something else,
a computer program
or some damn fool thing.
(Laughter)
But in any case, it's not part of science!
I used to get in an argument
that really gave me a stomachache.
Here is how it went:
"Science is objective,
consciousness is subjective,
therefore, there cannot be
a science of consciousness."
I love that argument
because it has got
a wonderful fallacy of ambiguity
over the concept of objectivity.
And I have already used up too much time
just to clearing my breath,
sort of speak,
but I want to get to that.
These twin traditions are paralyzing us,
and it's very hard to get out
of these twin traditions,
and I have only one real message
in this lecture,
and that is consciousness
is a biological phenomenon,
like photosynthesis,
digestion, mitosis,
and all that biological phenomena.
And once you accept that,
most, though not all,
of the hard problems about consciousness
simply evaporate!
And I will go through some of them.
I promised you to tell you
some of the outrageous things
said about consciousness,
and because of shortage of time,
I will only mention four of the worst.
One: "Consciousness does not exist.
It is an illusion, like sunsets."
Science has shown sunsets
and rainbows are illusions,
so consciousness is an illusion.
Two: "Maybe it exists,
but it is really something else,
it's a computer program
running in the brain."
Three: "No, the only thing
that exists is really behavior!"
It's embarrassing
how influential behaviorism was,
but I will get back to that.
Four: "Maybe consciousness exists,
but it can't make
any difference to the world.
How could spirituality move anything?"
And whenever somebody
tells me that, I think:
"You want to see if spirituality
moves something? Watch!"
I decide consciously to raise my arm
and the damn thing goes up.
(Laughter)
(Applause)
Furthermore, we do not say:
"It's a bit like the weather in Geneva,
some days it goes up
and some days it doesn't go up."
No! It goes up
when I right damn well want it to!
I will tell you how that is possible.
Now, I haven't yet given you a definition,
you can't do this
if you don't give a definition.
People always say: "Consciousness
is very hard to define."
I think it is rather easy to define
if you are not trying to give
a scientific definition.
We are not ready
for a scientific definition,
but here is the common sense definition:
consciousness consists of all those states
of feelings, or sensations, or awareness;
it begins in the morning
when you wake up from a dream,
and it goes on all day,
until you fall asleep, or die,
or otherwise become unconscious.
Dreams are a form
of consciousness on this definition.
That's the common sense definition,
that's our target;
if you are not talking about that,
you are not talking about consciousness.
But they think:"Well, that's it!
That's an awful problem!
How can such thing exist
as part of the real world?"
And this, if you have ever had
a philosophy course,
this is known
as the famous "mind-body problem."
I think that has a simple solution to it
and I am going to give it to you.
And here it is:
all of our conscious states,
without exception, are caused
by lower-level neurobiological processes
in the brain.
And they are realized in the brain
as higher-level or system features.
It is about as mysterious
as the liquidity of water, right?
The liquidity is not an extra juice
squirted out by the H2O molecules,
it's a condition that the system is in.
And just as the jar full of water
can go from liquid to solid,
depending on the behavior
of the molecules,
so your brain can go
from a state of being conscious
to a state of being unconscious,
depending on the behavior
of the molecules.
The famous "mind-body problem"
is that simple.
But now, we get
into some harder questions.
Let's specify
the exact features of consciousness
so that we can then answer
those four objections that I made to it.
Well, the first feature is
it is real and irreducible.
You can't get rid of it.
You see, the distinction
between reality and illusion
is the distinction between how things
consciously seem to us
and how they really are.
If consciousness seems like...
I like the French "arch",
it seems like there's an arch in the sky,
or it seems like the sun
is setting over the mountains,
it consciously seems to us
but that's not really happening.
But for that distinction,
between how things consciously seem
and how they really are,
you can't make that distinction
for the very existence of consciousness.
Because we are
the very existence of consciousness:
if it consciously seems to you,
that you are conscious,
you are conscious!
(Laughter)
I mean if a bunch of experts
come to me and say:
"We are heavy-duty neurobiologists
and we've done a study on you Searle,"
and we are convinced
you are not conscious.
You're a very cleverly constructed robot."
I don't think: " Well, maybe
these guys are right!"
I don't think that for a moment!
Because, I mean, Descartes
may have made a lot of mistakes
but he is right about this:
you cannot doubt the existence
of your own consciousness.
That's the first feature of consciousness.
It is real and irreducible.
You cannot get rid of it
by showing that it's an illusion,
in a way that you can
with other standard illusions.
The second feature is this one
that has been such a source
of trouble to us.
And that is all of our conscious states
have this qualitative character to them;
there is something
that it feels like to drink beer,
which is not what feels like
to do your income tax,
or listen to music.
And this qualitative field
automatically generates a third feature,
namely, conscious states
are by definition subjective,
in the sense that they only exist
as experienced
by some human or animal subjects,
some self that experiences them.
Maybe we will be able
to build a conscious machine,
[but] since we don't know
how our brains do it,
we are not in the position, so far,
to build a conscious machine.
Okay, another feature of consciousness
is that it comes
in unified conscious fields.
I don't just have the sight
of people in front of me,
and the sound of my voice,
and the weight of my shoes
against the floor,
but they occur to me as part
of one single great conscious field
that stretches forward and backward.
That is the key to understanding
the enormous power of consciousness.
And we have not been able
to do that in a robot.
The disappointment of robotics
derives from the fact
that we don't know
how to make a conscious robot,
so we don't have a machine
that can do this kind of thing.
The next feature of consciousness
after this marvelous,
unified conscious field
is that it functions causally
in our behavior.
I gave you a scientific demonstration
by raising my hand,
but how is that possible?
How can it be
that this thought in my brain
can move material objects?
Well, I will tell you the answer.
--we don't know the detailed answer,
but we know the basic part of the answer--
and that is there are sequences
of neuron firings
and they terminate
where the acetylcholine is secreted
at the axon end-plates
of the motor neurons,
sorry to use
philosophical terminology here.
(Laughter)
But when it is secreted
at the axon end-plates
of the motor neurons,
a lot of wonderful things
happen in the ion channels
and the damned arm goes up.
And think of what I have told you.
One and the same event,
my conscious decision to raise my hand
has a level of description
where it has all of these touchy-feely,
spiritual qualities,
--it's a thought in my brain--
but at the same time,
it's busy secreting acetylcholine
and doing all sorts of other things
as it makes its way from the motor cortex
down through the nerves fibers
and the arm.
Now, what that tells us
is that our traditional vocabularies
for discussing these issues,
are totally obsolete!
One and the same event,
has a level of description
where's neurobiological,
and another level of description
where's mental,
and that's a single event
and that's how nature works,
that's how is possible
for consciousness to function causally.
Now, with that in mind,
with going through these various features
of consciousness,
let's go back and answer
some of those early objections.
Well, the first one I said,
was consciousness doesn't exist,
it's an illusion.
Well, I've already answered that
I don't think we need to worry about that.
But the second one,
had an incredible influence
and may still be around,
and that is
if consciousness exists,
it's really something else;
it's really a digital computer program
running in your brain,
and that's what we need to do
to create consciousness,
get the right program.
Forget about the hardware,
any hardware will do,
provided is rich enough and stable enough
to carry the program.
Now, we know that that's wrong.
I mean, anybody who's thought
about computers at all
can see that that's wrong.
Because computation is defined
as symbol manipulation,
usually thought as 0s and 1s,
but any symbols will do.
You get an algorithm
that you can program in a binary code
and that's the defining trait
of the computer program.
But we know that's purely syntactical,
that's symbolic,
we know that actual human consciousness
has something more than that,
it's got a content,
in addition to the syntax,
it's got a semantics.
I made that argument,
--oh, my god!
I don't want to think about it!--
more that 30 years ago,
but there is a deeper argument
implicit in what I've told you.
And I want to tell you that argument
briefly, and that is:
consciousness creates an observer
independent reality.
It creates a reality of money,
property, government,
marriage, CERN, conferences,
cocktail parties, and summer vacations.
And all of those
are creations of consciousness.
Their existence is observer-relative.
It's only relative to conscious agents;
that a piece of paper is a money,
or a bunch of buildings is a university.
Now, ask yourselves about computation.
Is that absolute?
Like force, and mass,
and gravitational attraction?
Or is it observer-relative?
Well, some computations are intrinsic.
I add two plus two to get four,
that's going on no matter
what anybody thinks.
But when I hold out my pocket calculator
and do the calculation,
the only intrinsic phenomenon
is the electronic circuit
and its behavior.
That's the only absolute phenomenon.
All the rest is interpreted by us.
Computation only exists
relative to consciousness.
Either a conscious agent
is carrying the computation
or it has a piece of machinery
that admits
of a computational interpretation.
That doesn't mean
computation is arbitrary,
I spent a lot of money
on this hardware,
but we have this persistent confusion
between objectivity and subjectivity
as features of reality,
and objectivity and subjectivity
as features of claims.
And the bottom line
of this part of my talk, is this:
you can have
a completely objective science,
a science where you make
objectively true claims
about a domain whose existence
is subjective,
whose existence is in the human brain,
consisting of subjective states
or sensations, or feeling, or awareness.
So the objection, that you can't have
an objective science of consciousness
because it's subjective,
and science is objective,
that's a pun, that's a bad pun
on objectivity and subjectivity.
You can make objective claims
about a domain that is subjective
in its mode of existence,
and indeed, that's what neurologists do.
You have patients
that actually suffered pains
and you are trying to get
an objective science of that.
I promised to refute all these guys,
but I don't have
an awful lot of time left,
but let me refute a couple more of them.
I said that behaviorism ought to be
one of the great embarrassments
of our intellectual culture,
because it's refuted the moment
you think about it.
Your mental states are identical
with your behavior?
Well, think about the distinction
between feeling a pain,
and engaging in pain behavior.
I mean, I won't demonstrate pain behavior
but I can tell you
I am not having any pains right now!
So it's an obvious mistake.
Why did they make the mistake?
The mistake was, and you go back
and ready the literature on this,
you can see this over and over,
they think [that] if you accept
the irreducible existence
of consciousness,
you're giving up on science,
you're giving up on 300 years
of human progress and human hope
and all the rest of it.
And the message
I want to leave you with is
consciousness has to become accepted
as a genuine biological phenomenon,
as much subject to scientific analysis
as any other phenomena in biology,
or, for that matter,
the rest of science!
Thank you very much.
(Applause)
Hablaré de la conciencia.
¿Por qué la conciencia?
Porque es un tema
curiosamente descuidado
debido a nuestra ciencia y
a nuestra cultura filosófica.
¿Pero por qué es eso curioso?
Es el aspecto más
importante de nuestras vidas
por la muy simple y lógica razón,
de que es una condición
necesaria para todo lo importante
en nuestras vidas
lo de ser conscientes.
Si nos importa la ciencia, la filosofía,
la música, el arte, lo que sea,
de nada sirve si eres un zombie
o estás en coma, ¿cierto?
Por tanto la conciencia
es lo primero.
Esa es la primera razón
de la que hablaremos.
La segunda razón es
que cuando la gente
se llega a interesar,
como creo que deberían,
tienden a decir
las cosas más atroces.
No voy a esconderles
algunas de las cosas más atroces
que se dicen e incluso
cuando no se dicen
e intentan hacer
investigación seria.
Bueno, ha sido lento;
el progreso ha sido lento.
Permitan que les hablé
un poco de algunas de las dificultades.
Cuando en un inicio
me interesé, pensé, bueno,
(Risas)
He estado trabajando
en esto por largo tiempo
y creo que ahora podrían
obtener una plaza
si trabajan sobre la conciencia.
Así que este es un verdadero avance.
Entonces ¿por qué hay
esta curiosa renuencia
y curiosa hostilidad hacia la conciencia?
Creo que es una combinación
de dos aspectos
de nuestra cultura intelectual,
que gusta pensar
que se oponen entre sí,
cuando de hecho comparten
un conjunto común de supuestos.
La conciencia no es
parte del mundo físico,
sino parte de un mundo
espiritual, del alma
y el alma no es
parte del mundo físico.
Esa es la tradición de Dios,
el alma y la inmortalidad.
Existe otra tradición
que cree que se opone
pero acepta el peor de los supuestos.
Esa tradición cree que somos
materialistas científicos duros:
la conciencia no es
parte del mundo físico.
Ya sea que no existe
en absoluto o es algo más,
un programa de computadora
o de una tontería.
(Risas)
pero en realidad es algo más;
es un programa de computadora
que opera en el cerebro.
Tercero: no, lo único que existe
en realidad es el comportamiento.
Es vergonzoso lo influyente
que fue el conductismo,
pero volveré a eso después.
Y cuarto: quizá la conciencia exista,
pero no puede hacer
mucha diferencia en el mundo.
¿Cómo podría la espiritualidad mover algo?
Cada vez que alguien
me dice eso, pienso,
¿quieren ver a
la espiritualidad mover algo?
¡Vean! Decido conscientemente
subir el brazo
y la maldita cosa sube.
(Risas)
(Aplausos)
Además, no decimos, "Bueno, es un poco
como la temperatura en Ginebra,
unos días sube y otros días no sube".
No, sube cada vez que
me da la gana hacerlo.
Bien, les diré cómo eso es posible.
Hasta ahora no les
he dado una definición.
si no intentan darle
una definición científica.
No estamos listos para
una definición científica,
pero aquí tienen una
con sentido común:
la conciencia se compone de
todos aquellos estados
de sentimiento, sensación o de alerta,
se activa en la mañana cuando
despiertan de un sueño o de soñar
y continúa todo el día
hasta que se van a dormir
o mueren o dejan de ser conscientes
de alguna otra manera.
Los sueños son una forma
de conciencia en esta definición.
Esa es una definición con sentido común;
ese es nuestro objetivo.
Si no están hablando de eso,
no están hablando de conciencia.
Pero algunos piensan, "Si es eso,
es un problema espantoso,
¿cómo puede ser eso
parte del mundo real?"
Y si alguna vez toman
un curso de filosofía,
esto se conoce como el famoso
problema de mente-cuerpo.
Pienso que eso también tiene
una simple solución que les daré.
Y es que: todos
nuestros estados conscientes,
de la conciencia en lo que le concierne;
si conscientemente
te parece que estás consciente,
estás consciente.
(Risas)
y estamos convencidos
de que no está consciente,
solo es un robot construido
muy inteligente".
No pienso, "Bueno, quizá
estos tipos tiene razón".
No pienso eso ni por un momento,
porque, Descartes habrá cometido
muchos errores, pero acertó en decir
que uno no puede dudar
la existencia de su propia consciencia.
Bien, ese es el primer
rasgo de la conciencia.
Es real e irreducible.
No pueden deshacerse de ella
con mostrar que es una ilusión
en la forma que lo hacen
con otras ilusiones estándares.
El segundo rasgo es,
y que ha sido una fuente
de problemas para nosotros,
es que todos nuestros estados conscientes
tienen este carácter cualitativo.
Hay algo que se siente
cuando se bebe cerveza
que no es lo que se siente
al pagar impuestos,
o al escuchar música y
esta sensación cualitativa
automáticamente genera un tercer rasgo,
a saber, los estados conscientes
son por definición subjetivos,
en el sentido de que sólo existen
según los experimentan
algún sujeto humano o animal,
algún ser que los experimenta.
Quizá podremos construir
una máquina consciente,
pero dado que no sabemos
cómo lo hacen nuestros cerebros
no estamos en la posición, hasta ahora,
de construir una máquina consciente.
Bien, otro rasgo de la conciencia
es que se da en campos
conscientes unificados.
consciente unificado maravilloso,
es que funciona casualmente
según nuestra conducta.
Les di una demostración
científica al subir la mano,
¿pero cómo es eso posible?
¿Cómo puede ser que
este pensamiento en mi cerebro
pueda mover objetos materiales?
Les responderé.
No sabemos la respuesta detallada,
pero sabemos la parte
básica de la respuesta,
que es una secuencia de
disparos neuronales que terminan
cuando se segrega acetilcolina
en la placa terminal de los axones
en las neuronas motoras.
Disculpen la terminología 'filosófica',
(Risas)
pero cuando se segrega
en las placas terminales
de los axones de las neuronas motoras,
un montón de maravillas
ocurren en los canales iónicos
y el maldito brazo se levanta.
Ahora, piensen en lo que les dije.
Uno y el mismo evento,
mi decisión consciente de subir el brazo
tiene un nivel de descripción
que tiene todas estas cualidades
espirituales sensibles.
Es un pensamiento en
mi cerebro, pero a su vez,
es acetilcolina ocupada segregando
y haciendo todo tipo de cosas
conforme recorre la corteza motriz
hacia las fibras nerviosas del brazo.
Lo que eso nos dice es que
nuestros vocabularios tradicionales
y quiero explicarles
ese argumento brevemente:
la conciencia crea una realidad
independiente del observador.
Crea una realidad de
dinero, propiedad, gobierno,
matrimonio, conferencias del CERN,
fiestas de cóctel y
vacaciones de verano
y todas esas son creaciones
de la conciencia.
Su existencia es relativa al observador,
es sólo relativo a factores conscientes
que un pedazo de papel sea dinero
o que un montón de edificios
conformen una universidad.
Ahora, sobre la pregunta de computación.
¿Es eso absoluto, como la fuerza,
la masa y la atracción gravitacional?
¿O es relativa al observador?
Bien, algunas computaciones
son intrínsecas.
Sumo 2 + 2 para obtener 4,
eso será no importa
lo que piense alguien.
Pero cuando saco
mi calculadora de bolsillo
y hago el cálculo,
el único fenómeno intrínseco
es el circuito electrónico
y su comportamiento.
Ese es el único fenómeno absoluto.
Todo lo demás lo interpretamos nosotros.
La computación sólo
existe en relación a la conciencia.
Ya sea que un factor consciente
lleva a cabo la computación,
o tiene una pieza de maquinaria que
admite interpretación computacional.
Eso no significa que
la computación sea arbitraria.
Gasté mucho dinero en este hardware,
pero tenemos esta confusión persistente
entre objetividad y subjetividad
como rasgos de la realidad
y objetividad y subjetividad
aseveraciones objetivas
de un dominio que es subjetivo
en su forma de existencia
y en efecto eso es lo
que hacen los neurobiólogos.
Quiero decir, tienen pacientes
que en verdad sufren dolores,
y se intenta obtener
ciencia objetiva de ello.
Prometí refutar a todos estos aspectos
y no queda mucho tiempo,
pero dejen que refute alguno más.
Dije que el conductivismo debía ser
una de los más grandes confusiones
de nuestra cultura intelectual,
porque se refuta en
el momento en uno lo piensa.
¿Son los estados mentales
idénticos al comportamiento?
Piensen en la distinción
entre sentir un dolor
y desarrollar
un comportamiento doloroso.
No demostraré el comportamiento
doloroso, pero les puedo decir
que en este momento
no tengo ningún dolor,
(Aplausos)
Voi vorbi despre conștiință.
De ce ?
Fiindcă, în mod straniu,
e un subiect neglijat
atât de cultura științifică,
cât și de cea filozofică.
De ce în mod straniu ?
E cel mai important aspect al vieții
dintr-un motiv simplu și logic:
să fim conștienți e o condiție necesară
pentru tot ce e important în viață.
Dacă îți plac știința, filozofia,
muzica, arta,
e inutil,
dacă ești un zombi sau în comă.
Deci conștiința e primordială.
Acesta e primul motiv
pentru care discutăm despre conștiință.
Al doilea: când oamenii devin interesați
de ea, așa cum ar trebui să fie,
au tendința să spună
niște lucruri groaznice.
Nu voi încerca să ascund lucrurile
îngrozitoare spuse despre conștiință.
Chiar și atunci când oamenii
nu spun lucruri groaznice
și încearcă s-o studieze temeinic,
se progresează lent.
Să vă spun câteva ceva
despre dificultățile întâlnite.
Când mi-a trezit interesul, am crezut
a spus exasperat:
o știință a conștiinței”.
majoritatea chestiunilor dificile
legate de conștiință dispar.
Voi prezenta o parte din ele.
V-am promis că voi aminti câteva lucruri
revoltătoare spuse despre conștiință,
dar, din cauza lipsei timpului,
voi pomeni doar patru dintre ele.
Primul: „Conștiința nu există.
E o iluzie, ca apusurile de soare.”
„Știința a demonstrat că apusurile
și curcubeiele sunt o iluzie,”
„deci și conștiința e o iluzie”.
Al doilea: „Poate există, dar e altceva,
un soft rulând în creier”.
Al treilea: „Singurul lucru ce există
cu adevărat e comportamentul”.
E jenant ce influent a fost
behaviorismul, dar voi reveni la asta.
Al patrulea: „Conștiința poate exista,
dar asta n-are nicio importanță.”
„Cum ar putea spiritul
să miște lucrurile ?”
Când aud asta, îmi spun: „Vrei să vezi
dacă spiritul mișcă lucruri ? Privește !”
„Hotărăsc în mod conștient
să ridic brațul și afurisitul se ridică”.
(Râsete)
Observați că nu spunem
că e ca vremea din Geneva,
uneori se ridică, alteori nu,
ci se ridică atunci când vreau eu.
Vă voi spune cum e cu putință.
Încă nu v-am oferit o definiție
și nu se poate fără o definiție.
Oamenii spun mereu:
Cred că are o soluție simplă.
Iat-o:
A doua caracteristică
ne-a dat multă bătaie de cap.
E vorba de faptul că toate stările
conștiente au o natură calitativă:
într-un fel te simți când bei bere
și în altul când îți calculezi
impozitul pe venit sau asculți muzică.
Din această natură calitativă rezultă
cea de-a treia caracteristică:
stările conștiente
sunt, prin definiție, subiective,
adică există numai în măsura
în care sunt resimțite
de un subiect uman sau animal,
de un sine.
Poate vom fi capabili să creăm
un robot conștient,
dar, neștiind cum funcționează creierul,
deocamdată nu avem posibilitatea
s-o facem.
Altă caracteristică a conștiinței:
enormei puteri a conștiinței.
N-am reușit s-o facem în cazul roboților.
Dezamăgirea produsă de robotică
constă în faptul că nu știm
să creăm un robot conștient,
deci nu avem un aparat
care să poate face așa ceva.
Următoarea caracteristică a conștiinței,
după uimitorul câmp unificat,
e că funcționează cauzal
în cadrul comportamentului.
V-am oferit o demonstrație științifică
ridicându-mi mâna,
dar cum e cu putință așa ceva ?
Cum poate un gând din mintea mea
să miște obiecte materiale ?
Vă voi răspunde. Nu știm detaliile,
însă știm partea esențială:
există secvențe de impulsuri nervoase,
întrerupte acolo unde
e secretată acetilcolina,
în terminațiile axonale
ale neuronilor motorii.
Scuze că folosesc terminologie filozofică.
Atunci când se întâmplă asta,
se produc minuni în canalele ionice
și al naibii braț se ridică.
Gândiți-vă la ce v-am spus !
Unul și același eveniment,
decizia conștientă de a-mi ridica brațul,
are un nivel de descriere unde posedă
calități sensibile, sufletești,
fiind un gând din mintea mea,
dar, totodată, implică secreția
de acetilcolină și diverse alte lucruri,
pe măsură ce-și croiește drum
de la cortexul motor
până la fibrele nervoase și la braț.
Asta ne spune că vocabularul obișnuit
folosit pentru discutarea acestor probleme
e complet depășit.
Unul și același eveniment
are un nivel de descriere
unde e neurobiologic
și altul unde e psihic,
dar e un singur eveniment,
așa lucrează natura
și așa poate conștiința
să funcționeze cauzal.
Ținând cont de asta, de examinarea
caracteristicilor conștiinței,
să revenim și să răspundem
la obiecțiile de la început.
Prima era: „Conștiința nu există,
fiind o iluzie”.
Am răspuns deja la ea,
nu ne mai batem capul.
Însă a doua a avut multă influență
drept manipularea simbolurilor,
de obicei 0 și 1,
dar orice simboluri sunt bune.
Ai un algoritm
pe care-l poți programa în cod binar,
aceasta fiind trăsătura definitorie
a unui soft.
Însă știm că toate acestea
sunt pur sintactice și simbolice,
pe când conștiința umană reală
mai are ceva, un conținut,
pe lângă sintaxă, are semantică.
singurul fenomen intrinsec
e circuitul electronic și funcționarea sa.
Acesta e singurul fenomen absolut.
Restul e interpretat de noi.
Calculul există
numai relativ la conștiință.
Fie un agent conștient
efectuează calculul,
fie are un aparat
ce permite o interpretare numerică.
Asta nu înseamnă că calculul e arbitrar.
Am cheltuit mult pe acest echipament,
dar continuăm să facem confuzie
între obiectivitate și subiectivitate
ca trăsături ale realității
și ca trăsături ale premiselor.
Concluzia acestei părți a conferinței
e următoarea:
poți avea o știință complet obiectivă,
în care poți face afirmații
obiectiv adevărate
despre un domeniu
a cărui existență e subiectivă,
care există în creierul uman,
constând din stări, senzații, sentimente
sau percepții subiective.
Deci obiecția cum că nu poate exista
o știință obiectivă a conștiinței,
existența ireductibilă a conștiinței,
(Aplauze)
Govoriću o svesti.
Zašto o svesti?
Zato što je čudno zanemarena
i u našoj naučnoj i u filozofskoj kulturi.
Zašto je to čudno?
Zato što je to najvažniji aspekt
naših života
iz vrlo jednostavnog, logičnog razloga,
naime, neophodan uslov
i kada zaista ozbiljno istražuju
pa, tada je to sporo.
Progres je spor.
Reći ću vam ukratko o nekim poteškoćama.
Kada sam se prvi put zainteresovao
za svest, pomislio sam
da je to jasan problem biologije.
Hajde da uposlimo te napadače
mozga da odgonetnu
kako to funkcioniše u mozgu.
Tako sam otišao na kalifornijski fakultet
i razgovarao sa svim
velikim neurobiolozima tamo
i bili su pomalo nestrpljivi
kao što često znaju biti naučnici
kada im postavljaš nezgodna pitanja.
Šokiralo me je šta je
jedan od njih, čuven neurobiolog,
u rastrojstvu rekao: "Gledaj,
u mojoj struci je u redu
biti zainteresovan za svest
ali prvo postani redovan profesor.
To je prvo."
Pa sad, na ovome radim veoma dugo.
Mislim da sada možete postati
redovan profesor
Dobro, a otkuda onda to čudno opiranje
i čudna odbojnost prema svesti?
Pa, mislim da je to kombinacija
dve osobine
naše intelektualne kulture
koje vole da misle
da oponiraju jedna drugoj,
a u stvari dele isti niz pretpostavki.
Svest nije deo fizičkog sveta,
ona je deo duhovnog sveta.
Pripada duši,
a duša nije deo fizičkog sveta.
I obično sam dobijao argument
Volim taj argument jer poseduje izuzetnu
grešku dvosmislenosti
u vezi sa konceptom objektivnosti.
Već sam potrošio previše vremena
samo ćaskajući, da tako kažem,
ali želim da se vratim na to.
Zato nas te tradicije
bliznakinje parališu.
Veoma je teško izaći
iz tih bliskih tradicija.
Imam samo jednu pravu poruku
u ovom predavanju,
i jednom kada to prihvatite,
većina iako ne i svi najveći problemi
o svesti jednostavno nestanu.
Pomenuću neke od njih.
Obećao sam da ću vam reći neke
od nečuvenih stvari izrečenih o svesti.
Zbog kratkog vremena,
pomenuću samo četiri najgore.
Prva: svest ne postoji.
To je iluzija, kao zalasci sunca.
Nauka je dokazala da su
zalasci sunca i duge iluzije.
Tako je svest iluzija.
Druga: možda postoji,
ali je stvarno nešto drugo.
To je kompjuterski program
koji se odvija u mozgu.
Treće: ne, jedino što stvarno
postoji je ponašanje.
Posramljujuće je koliko je
bihejviorizam bio uticajan
ali na to ću se vratiti.
I četvrto: možda svest postoji
Kad god mi neko to kaže, pomislim:
"Želite li da vidite kako
duhovnost nešto pokreće?
Gledajte. Svesno sam odlučio
da podignem svoju ruku
i ta prokleta stvar se podiže."
(Smeh)
to prokleto zaželim.
U redu.
bez izuzetka
su izazvana nižim neurobiološkim
procesima u mozgu
i ostvaruju se u mozgu
kao višem nivou ili svojstvima sistema.
To je mistično skoro
kao i tečno stanje vode.
Je l' tako? Tečnost nije neki poseban sok
koji molekuli H2O cede.
To je stanje u kojem je sistem.
Kao što bokal vode može preći
iz tečnog u čvrsto stanje
u zavisnosti od ponašanja molekula,
tako i vaš mozak može preći
iz stanja svesti
u stanje bez svesti
u zavisnosti od ponašanja molekula.
Poznati problem uma i tela je jednostavan.
Je l' da?
Ali sada stižemo do težih pitanja.
Navedimo tačne karakteristike svesti,
pa da možemo odgovoriti
na ona četiri prigovora
koje sam naveo.
Prva karakteristika je
da je stvarna i neizbežna.
Ne možete da je se oslobodite.
Vidite, razlika između
stvarnosti i iluzije
je u tome kako nam se stvari
svesno čine i kakve su one u stvarnosti.
Svesno izgleda kao da je -
sviđa mi se francuski izraz
za dugu "arc-en-ciel"-
čini se kao da je luk na nebu,
ili izgleda kao da sunce zalazi
iza planina.
Svesno nam se čini,
ali to se u stvari ne dešava.
Ali s tom razlikom
kako se stvari svesno čine
i kakve stvarno jesu,
ne možete dati razliku
u vezi sa postojanjem same svesti,
tada jeste svesni.
Mislim, ako mi gomila stručnjaka kaže:
"Mi smo veliki neurobiolozi
i napravili smo studiju
o vama, Serl, i ubeđeni smo
da niste svesni
već da ste vrlo pametno
konstruisan robot",
ja ne pomislim: "Možda su
ovi ljudi u pravu, razumete?"
Ne pomislim to ni za sekundu,
jer Dekart je možda mnogo grešio,
ali je bio u pravu o tome.
Ne možete sumnjati u postojanje
sopstvene svesti.
Dobro, to je prva karakteristika svesti.
Ona je realna i neizbežna.
Ne možete da je se oslobodite
prikazujući je iluzijom
na način na koji to činite
sa drugim iluzijama.
Dobro, druga karakteristika nam je
pravila tolike probleme,
imaju svoj kvalitativni karakter.
Postoji nešto što se oseća
kao da pijete pivo
što nije isti osećaj
kao pri plaćanju poreza
ili pri slušanju muzike
i taj kvalitativni osećaj
automatski proizvodi treću karakteristiku
naime, svesna stanja
su po definiciji subjektivna
u smislu da postoje jedino kroz iskustvo
koje je doživeo neki čovek ili životinja,
neko biće koje ih je doživelo.
Možda ćemo moći da napravimo
svesnu mašinu.
S obzirom da ne znamo
kako naš mozak to radi,
nismo još u poziciji
da napravimo svesnu mašinu.
Dobro, sledeća karakteristika svesti
jeste njeno pojavljivanje
u objedinjenim svesnim poljima.
Tako ja nemam samo uvid
u ljude ispred mene
i u zvuk svog glasa
i u težinu mojih cipela
ogromne snage svesnog stanja.
I to nismo u mogućnosti
da stvorimo u robotu.
Razočarenje u robote
proizlazi iz činjenice
da ne znamo kako da napravimo
svesnog robota,
pa nemamo mašinu
koja bi to mogla da uradi.
Sledeća osobina svesti
posle ovog veličanstvenog
objedinjenog polja svesti,
jeste njena uzročna funkcija
u našem ponašanju.
Dao sam vam naučnu demonstraciju
dizanjem ruke,
ali kako je to moguće?
Kako je moguće da ta pomisao
u mom mozgu
filozofskom terminologijom ovde,
i radi razne druge stvari
probijajući se iz motornog korteksa
dole preko nervnih vlakana u ruci.
To nam govori
da je naš tradicionalni rečnik
pri raspravi o tim temama sasvim zastareo.
Jedan isti događaj ima nivo opisa
koji je neurobiološki i drugi nivo opisa
koji je mentalni,
a radi se o istom događaju
i tako priroda funkcioniše.
Tako je moguće
da svest funkcioniše uzročno.
Imajući to na umu
i prolazeći kroz sve
jer komputacija
Dobijate algoritam
koji možete programirati
u binarnom kodu,
a to je definišuća osobina
kompjuterskog programa.
Ali znamo da je to čisto sintaktičko.
To je simbolično.
Znamo da prava ljudska svest
ima nešto više od toga.
Ima sadržaj osim sintakse.
Ima semantiku.
To sam tvrdio 30 -
i ukratko ću vam ga reći,
to je da svest stvara od posmatrača
nezavisnu stvarnost.
Ona stvara stvarnost novca,
vlasništva, vlade,
braka, CERN konferencija,
koktel prijema i letnjih odmora
i masa i gravitacijska privlačnost?
Ili da li je relativno
zavisno od posmatrača?
Pa, neke komputacije su unutarnje.
Saberem 2 plus 2 da dobijem 4.
To se dešava bez obzira
na to šta ko misli.
Ali kada izvučem svoj džepni kalkulator
koji obavi kalkulaciju,
jedini unutarnji fenomen
je električno kolo i njegovo ponašanje.
To je jedini apsolutni fenomen.
Sve ostalo sami tumačimo.
Komputacija postoji samo
u odnosu prema svesti.
Ili činilac svesti izvodi komputaciju
ili ima deo mašinerije koja dopušta
matematičku interpretaciju.
To ne znači da je komputacija proizvoljna.
Potrošio sam dosta novca na taj hardver.
Ali imamo ovu stalnu zabunu
između objektivnosti i subjektivnosti
kao svojstava stvarnosti
i objektivnosti i subjektivnosti
kao svojstava tvrdnji.
I suština ovog dela mog izlaganja je ovo:
možete imati potpuno objektivnu nauku,
nauku s objektivnim tvrdnjama,
o domenu čije je postojanje subjektivno,
čije postojanje je u ljudskom mozgu
sastavljeno od subjektivnih stanja oseta
ili osećanja ili budnosti.
Zato prigovor da ne možete
imati objektivnu nauku o svesti
jer je ona subjektivna,
a nauka je objektivna, jeste igra reči.
To je loša igra reči
o objektivnosti i subjektivnosti.
Možete objektivno tvrditi
o domenu koji je po prirodi subjektivan
i to je ono što rade neurobiolozi.
Imate pacijente koji imaju bolove,
i pokušavate da dobijete
objektivnu nauku o tome.
Obećao sam da ću opovrgnuti
tvrdnje tih ljudi,
i nemam previše vremena
ali dozvolite mi da opovrgnem još par.
Rekao sam da bi bihejviorizam
trebalo da bude
jedna od velikih sramota
naše intelektualne kulture,
jer je odbačen u momentu
čim o tome razmišljamo.
Vaša mentalna stanja su
identična sa vašim ponašanjem?
Pa razmislite o razlici
između osećaja bola
i angažovanja u bolnom ponašanju.
Neću demonstrirati bolno ponašanje,
ali mogu vam reći
da nemam nikakve bolove sada.
Dakle to je očigledna greška.
Zašto su tako pogrešili?
Greška je u tome -
i možete se vratiti i pročitati
literaturu o tome,
možete to videti svaki put iznova -
oni misle da ako prihvatite
neizbežno postojanje svesti,
odustajete od nauke.
Odustajete od 300 godina ljudskog progresa
i ljudske nade i svega ostalog.
A poruka s kojom vas želim ostaviti
je da svest mora postati prihvaćena
kao izvorni biološki fenomen
i utoliko predmet naučnih analiza
Hvala vam mnogo.
