0:00:00.880,0:00:02.735 "We're declaring war against cancer, 0:00:02.760,0:00:05.360 and we will win this war by 2015." 0:00:06.440,0:00:10.176 This is what the US Congress[br]and the National Cancer Institute declared 0:00:10.200,0:00:12.760 just a few years ago, in 2003. 0:00:13.560,0:00:16.656 Now, I don't know about you,[br]but I don't buy that. 0:00:16.680,0:00:18.736 I don't think we quite won this war yet, 0:00:18.760,0:00:21.400 and I don't think[br]anyone here will question that. 0:00:21.800,0:00:24.296 Now, I will argue that a primary reason 0:00:24.320,0:00:26.456 why we're not winning[br]this war against cancer 0:00:26.480,0:00:28.776 is because we're fighting blindly. 0:00:28.800,0:00:32.375 I'm going to start by sharing with you[br]a story about a good friend of mine. 0:00:32.400,0:00:33.616 His name is Ehud, 0:00:33.640,0:00:36.776 and a few years ago,[br]Ehud was diagnosed with brain cancer. 0:00:36.800,0:00:38.656 And not just any type of brain cancer: 0:00:38.680,0:00:41.856 he was diagnosed with one[br]of the most deadly forms of brain cancer. 0:00:41.880,0:00:43.096 In fact, it was so deadly 0:00:43.120,0:00:45.776 that the doctors told him[br]that they only have 12 months, 0:00:45.800,0:00:49.216 and during those 12 months,[br]they have to find a treatment. 0:00:49.240,0:00:50.696 They have to find a cure, 0:00:50.720,0:00:52.880 and if they cannot[br]find a cure, he will die. 0:00:53.800,0:00:55.256 Now, the good news, they said, 0:00:55.280,0:00:58.216 is that there are tons[br]of different treatments to choose from, 0:00:58.240,0:00:59.456 but the bad news is 0:00:59.480,0:01:03.016 that in order for them to tell[br]if a treatment is even working or not, 0:01:03.040,0:01:05.536 well, that takes them[br]about three months or so. 0:01:05.560,0:01:07.936 So they cannot try that many things. 0:01:07.960,0:01:11.056 Well, Ehud is now going[br]into his first treatment, 0:01:11.080,0:01:14.336 and during that first treatment,[br]just a few days into that treatment, 0:01:14.360,0:01:17.696 I'm meeting with him, and he tells me,[br]"Adam, I think this is working. 0:01:17.720,0:01:20.536 I think we really lucked out here.[br]Something is happening." 0:01:20.560,0:01:23.016 And I ask him, "Really?[br]How do you know that, Ehud?" 0:01:23.040,0:01:25.256 And he says, "Well,[br]I feel so terrible inside. 0:01:25.280,0:01:27.136 Something's gotta be working up there. 0:01:27.160,0:01:28.376 It just has to." 0:01:28.400,0:01:32.840 Well, unfortunately, three months later,[br]we got the news, it didn't work. 0:01:33.520,0:01:35.576 And so Ehud goes[br]into his second treatment. 0:01:35.600,0:01:36.856 And again, the same story. 0:01:36.880,0:01:39.616 "It feels so bad, something's[br]gotta be working there." 0:01:39.640,0:01:42.576 And then three months later,[br]again we get bad news. 0:01:42.600,0:01:46.536 Ehud is going into his third treatment,[br]and then his fourth treatment. 0:01:46.560,0:01:49.080 And then, as predicted, Ehud dies. 0:01:49.800,0:01:54.376 Now, when someone really close to you[br]is going through such a huge struggle, 0:01:54.400,0:01:56.216 you get really swamped with emotions. 0:01:56.240,0:01:58.336 A lot of things[br]are going through your head. 0:01:58.360,0:01:59.816 For me, it was mostly outrage. 0:01:59.840,0:02:04.536 I was just outraged that, how come[br]this is the best that we can offer? 0:07:31.400,0:07:35.240 So this is not a simple decision to make, 0:07:35.840,0:07:37.776 and unfortunately this is the decision 0:07:37.800,0:07:41.136 that brain cancer surgeons[br]have to take every single day 0:07:41.160,0:07:42.760 as they're seeing their patients. 0:07:43.320,0:07:46.256 And so I remember talking[br]to a few friends of mine in the lab, 0:07:46.280,0:07:48.656 and we say, "Boy,[br]there's got to be a better way." 0:07:48.680,0:07:52.096 But not just like you tell a friend[br]that there's got to be a better way. 0:07:52.120,0:07:54.073 There's just got to be a better way here. 0:07:54.097,0:07:55.616 This is just incredible. 0:07:55.640,0:07:57.296 And so we looked back. 0:07:57.320,0:08:00.296 Remember those PET scans I told you about,[br]the sugar and so on. 0:08:00.320,0:08:03.056 We said, hey, how about[br]instead of using sugar molecules, 0:08:03.080,0:08:06.216 let's maybe take tiny, tiny[br]little particles made of gold, 0:08:06.240,0:08:09.896 and let's program them with some[br]interesting chemistry around them. 0:08:09.920,0:08:12.336 Let's program them[br]to look for cancer cells. 0:08:12.360,0:08:14.456 And then we will inject[br]these gold particles 0:08:14.480,0:08:16.736 into these patients by the billions again, 0:08:16.760,0:08:18.736 and we'll have them go all over the body, 0:08:18.760,0:08:20.736 and just like secret agents, if you will, 0:08:20.760,0:08:23.576 go and walk by[br]every single cell in our body 0:08:23.600,0:08:25.296 and knock on the door of that cell, 0:08:25.320,0:08:28.056 and ask, "Are you a cancer cell[br]or are you a healthy cell?
