Desperate Journey: Europe's Refugee Crisis

  • 0:02 - 0:05
Wait on the boat, we're coming, wait!
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    Take the baby, please.
  • 0:50 - 0:55
Over 800,000 asylum seekers and migrants
reached Europe by sea this year.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    More than 200,000 arrived on
the Greek islands in October alone.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
Most of them come from countries where
    conflict, repression and fear
  • 1:10 - 1:12
forced people to flee for their lives.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
And did they threaten you personally?
They said to you: "you have to go"?
  • 1:41 - 1:47
Over 3400 people including many children
have died at sea trying to reach
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    the European Union
    this year.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
Yet despite the risks they keep coming
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    Where are you going now?
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    How many days since they've
    had the medicine?
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    When did you leave ....?
  • 2:20 - 2:23
Human rights watch sent teams of
    of researchers to document
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    the dangerous journey
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    and the hardships upon arrival.
  • 2:30 - 2:35
    We spoke to Syrians, Afghans,
    Iraqis, Eritreans and Somalis
  • 2:36 - 2:40
In story after story we heard that
the only way out of violence
  • 2:40 - 2:44
and terror at home and unbearable
    conditions in neighboring countries
  • 2:44 - 2:49
was to resort to smugglers and flee
    through dangerous crossings.
  • 3:19 - 3:24
If there were safe and legal routes
to seek refuge, far fewer people
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    would be at the mercy
    of abusive smugglers.
  • 3:40 - 3:44
We have witnessed scenes of chaos at many
    EU borders for months now.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
Daily arrivals of thousands of people
    on Greek islands
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    created an ongoing humanitarian crisis.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
Hitting those most vulnerable the hardest.
  • 4:27 - 4:31
Most of those who reach Greece by sea
    continue their journey over land
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    through the western Balkans
    encountering police abuse,
  • 4:35 - 4:40
    terrible detention conditions and
    cascading border closures.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
Many EU governements are foccused on
    preventing arrivals
  • 4:44 - 4:47
instead of managing the flow humanely.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
A plan to relocate tens of thousands
of asylum seekers from frontline states
  • 4:52 - 4:56
like Greece and Italy has gotten off
    to such a slow start
  • 4:56 - 5:00
At this rate it will take over 180 years
    to reach the target.
  • 5:04 - 5:08
    And months into this crisis
    with winter approaching
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    volunteers, not governments,
    are still at the forefront
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    of providing humanitarian assistance.
  • 5:34 - 5:39
Until now the response of EU governments
to the crisis has been deeply flawed.
  • 5:39 - 5:44
Defined by deaths at sea, chaos
    and distressing humanatarian conditions.
  • 5:45 - 5:49
People should not have to risk
their lives or face so many obstacles
  • 5:49 - 5:51
to reach a place of refuge.
  • 5:52 - 5:57
The European Union has a legal and moral
    obligation to fairly process
  • 5:57 - 6:00
    and humanely host asylum seekers
    and refugees
  • 6:00 - 6:05
and respect the rights and dignity of
everyone who arrives at its borders.
  • 6:06 - 6:11
(Man): We are from Syria from Damascus
Damascus is a very good, before the war.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
We are just like Europe, we have money, we have houses,
  • 6:14 - 6:16
we have cars, we have everything.
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    The war damaged everything
(Interviewer): So what do you need?
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    (Man): Peace, just peace, yeah.
  • 6:27 - 6:33
EU government should ensure safe passage
access to asylum at and within its borders
  • 6:33 - 6:38
and make sure human rights and compassion
are at the heart of its response
  • 6:38 - 6:39
    to this challenge.
Title:
Desperate Journey: Europe's Refugee Crisis
Description:

(November 17, 2015) More than 800,000 asylum seekers and migrants have arrived in Europe by sea in 2015, with most traveling onward to northern and western EU countries. According to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, 84 percent were from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Somalia, or Iraq – all countries experiencing conflict, widespread violence and insecurity, or countries with highly repressive governments.
European Union governments should take urgent action to bring Europe’s response to the refugee challenge, now a full blown EU crisis, in line with their legal responsibilities and stated values.
