The Mask You Live In - Trailer

  • 0:03 - 0:04
    >> Stop crying
  • 0:04 - 0:05
    >> Stop with the tears
  • 0:05 - 0:05
    >> Don't cry
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    >> Pick yourself up
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    >> Stop with the emotions
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    >> Don't be a pussy
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    >> Don't let nobody disrespect you
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    >> Be cool
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    >> And be kind of a dick
  • 0:11 - 0:11
    >> Always keep your mouth shut
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    >> Nobody likes a tattle-tale
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    >> Bros come before hoes
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    >> Don't let your woman run your life.
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    >> You're a bitch.
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    >> What a fag.
  • 0:17 - 0:17
    >> Get laid.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    >> Do something.
  • 0:18 - 0:18
    >> Be a man.
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    >> Be a man!
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    >> Grow some balls!
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    >> The 3 most destructive words
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    that every man receives
    when he is a boy,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
is when he's told to be a man.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    >> We've constructed an
    idea of masculinity
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    in the United States
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    that doesn't give young boys
  • 0:39 - 0:41
a way to feel secure in their masculinity.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
So, we make 'em go prove it all the time.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    >> Within their peer group culture
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    each of them is posturing
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    based on how the other
    boys are posturing,
  • 0:48 - 0:49
and what they end up missing
  • 0:49 - 0:51
is what they each really want,
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    which is just that closeness.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    >> In good times guys are,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
like, really close to each other,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
but when things get a little bit worse
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    you're on your own.
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    >> From middle school
  • 1:01 - 1:03
I had four really close friends.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
Once I went kind of went into high school,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
I struggled finding people I can talk to
  • 1:06 - 1:09
because I feel like I'm not supposed to get help.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    >> Our kids get up every morning.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
They have to prepare their mask
  • 1:12 - 1:14
for how they're going to walk to school.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
A lot of our students don't know how
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    to take the mask off.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
What is it you don't let people see?
  • 1:18 - 1:22
Almost 90% of you have pain and anger
  • 1:22 - 1:23
on the back of that paper.
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    >> If you never cry
  • 1:25 - 1:26
then you have all these feelings
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    stuffed up inside of you,
  • 1:28 - 1:29
and then you can't get them out.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    >> They really buy into a culture
  • 1:31 - 1:33
that doesn't value what we feminized.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
If we're in a culture that doesn't value caring,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    doesn't value relationships,
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    doesn't value empathy,
  • 1:38 - 1:41
you are going to have boys and girls,
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    men and women go crazy.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    >> I had anger issues in high school.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    I felt like an outcast.
  • 1:47 - 1:48
I've been suspended at least once
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    every year I was here.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
We would just look for trouble
  • 1:51 - 1:53
and just like, try to fight.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    >> Boys are more likely to act out,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
they're more likely to become aggressive.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
Most people miss that as depression,
  • 1:59 - 2:01
or see it as a conduct disorder,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    or just a bad kid.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    >> I felt like just giving up on life,
    you know,
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    see I had suicide thoughts
  • 2:10 - 2:11
in my head in sixth grade.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    >> I felt alone for-for a long time,
  • 2:15 - 2:17
and I actually thought about killing myself.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    >> Whether it's homicidal violence,
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    or suicidal violence,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
people resort to such desperate behavior,
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    only when they are feeling
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    shamed and humiliated,
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    or feel they would be
  • 2:29 - 2:32
if they didn't prove that they were real men.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    >> If you're told from day one
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    'don't let nobody disrespect you',
  • 2:36 - 2:39
and 'this is the way you handle it as a man',
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    respect is linked to violence.
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    >> If I can man up,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    why step down from that,
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    you feel me?
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    >> It's like instinct.
  • 2:51 - 2:51
    >> So man up!
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    >> Man up.
  • 2:52 - 2:52
    >> Man up.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    >> Man up.
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    >> Grow some fucking balls!
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    >> Act like a man.
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    >> Be a man.
  • 2:56 - 2:56
    >> Be a man!
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    >> For my kids,
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    I was gonna end this
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    hyper masculine narrative here.
