(h) TROM - 2.6 Politicians, voting and democracy
-
0:04 - 0:08[Politicians, Voting And Democracy]
-
0:13 - 0:19Politicians are human beings, and like the rest of us are influenced by the environment
-
0:20 - 0:26So once politicians reach the parliamentary environment they will behave accordingly.
-
0:30 - 0:35Human government has been around for many thousand of years actually -sure
-
0:35 - 0:42and they've been fighting and killing each other. All human upgraded governments are basically corrupt,
-
0:42 - 0:47they serve the 'in-group'. They have to, otherwise they'd never get elected.
-
0:47 - 0:53So here you sit back with the illusion of patching up the society, making it good,
-
0:53 - 1:01getting decent people in government. All that's delusional. You have to have a government not based on money.
-
1:01 - 1:10You have to have a government with machines that distribute goods and services, regardless of race, religion or private beliefs.
-
1:11 - 1:16In other ways, people must be permitted to live the lifestyle that they prefer.
-
1:16 - 1:19Without you telling them what to do.
-
1:19 - 1:25When you come up and you say "this is the right way", it's your way, the way you were brought up,
-
1:25 - 1:29but that doesn't make it right, it just makes it appropriate for you.
-
1:29 - 1:35The future will be very different than the world today, the future will be based upon:
-
1:35 - 1:43Does the system work? Does it serve most people? Does it maintain a healthy relationship in sharing values?
-
1:44 - 1:50Or does the system damage that? This is how we decide what system is to be selected.
-
1:50 - 1:57How well does the system works? That's the final test, that's used in engineering standards,
-
1:57 - 2:00that's the only system that's valid.
-
2:01 - 2:04Now, is it a democracy? People ask me.
-
2:05 - 2:15I put it this way: Is it a participatory democracy? -Well I participate. -Well then come here sometimes. -I want to participate right away.
-
2:15 - 2:20-That's good! how would you prevent cars from hitting each other? -I don't know.
-
2:20 - 2:24-How do you prevent a building catching fire? -I don't know.
-
2:24 - 2:31-How do you participate? Did you vote for the space program? Did anybody vote for Vietnam war?
-
2:32 - 2:38Did anybody vote for any war? Did anybody vote for the Moon project?
-
2:38 - 2:40How the hell do you participate then?
-
2:43 - 2:49Half of all american adults understand that the earth orbits the sun yearly
-
2:49 - 2:51according to a basic science survey.
-
2:51 - 2:55Nevertheless there's enthusiasm for research acceptance on fields like genetic engineering
-
2:55 - 3:00and nuclear power, that are viewed with suspicion. Only about 25% of american adults
-
3:00 - 3:04get passing grades in the national science foundation survey of what people know about
-
3:04 - 3:08basic science and economics. I mean this is singing your song isn't it?
-
3:09 - 3:12Well, it certainly is what I'm talking about in "The demon haunted world".
-
3:12 - 3:20My feeling, Charlie is not that the pseudo science and superstition
-
3:20 - 3:28and "new age", so called, beliefs and the fundamental zealotry are something new,
-
3:28 - 3:31they have been with us for as long as we've been human,
-
3:31 - 3:38but we live in an age based on science and technology with formidable technological powers.
-
3:38 - 3:43Science and technology are propelling us forward at accelerating rates
-
3:43 - 3:47Thats right! And if we don't understand it, about "we" I mean we general public
-
3:47 - 3:51if it's something like "ohh I'm not good at that, I don't know anything about it"
-
3:51 - 3:56Then who is making all the decisions about science and technology that are going to determine
-
3:56 - 4:01what kind of a future our children live in? Just uh, some members of congress?
-
4:01 - 4:05But there's no more than a handful of members of congress who have any background in science at all!
-
4:06 - 4:12And the republican congress has just abolished it's own office of technology assessment,
-
4:12 - 4:16The organization that gave them by participation competent advice on science and technology
-
4:16 - 4:18They say "We don't want to know".
-
4:18 - 4:22There's two kinds of dangers, one is what I just talked about,
-
4:22 - 4:26that we've arranged the society based on science and technology
-
4:26 - 4:29in which nobody understands anything about science and technology
-
4:29 - 4:35and this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later
-
4:35 - 4:40is gonna blow up in our faces, I mean, who is running the science and technology
-
4:41 - 4:43in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?
-
4:43 - 4:47And the second reason I'm worried about this
-
4:47 - 4:53is that science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking
-
4:53 - 4:56a way of skeptically interrogating the universe
-
4:57 - 5:00with a fine understanding of human fallibility.
-
5:00 - 5:09If we are not to able to ask skeptical questions to interrogate those who tell us that something is true
-
5:09 - 5:14to be skeptical of those in authority. Then we are up for grabs
-
5:14 - 5:19for the next charlatan political or religious who comes hobblling along.
-
5:19 - 5:26Have we (the point is made and maybe by you), anyway when was the last time a president made a speech about science?
-
5:28 - 5:35It is this notion that, science is not a great interest to us, in some sense,
-
5:35 - 5:38that somehow we dont wanna learn.
-
5:38 - 5:42You see, people read the stock market quotations
-
5:42 - 5:45and financial papers, look how complex that is.
-
5:45 - 5:47They know the direct connections to their own...
-
5:47 - 5:51There's a motivation, but they are capable of it, large amounts of people.
-
5:51 - 5:56People are able of look at sport statistics, look how many people can do that!
-
5:56 - 6:01Understanding science is not more difficult than that, it doesn't involve greater intellectual activities.
-
6:02 - 6:12But the thing about science is first of all, it's after the way the universe really is, and not what makes us feel better.
-
6:12 - 6:17And a lot of the competing doctors are after what feels good
-
6:17 - 6:20and not what's true.
-
6:22 - 6:28It's not politicians that can solve problems, they have no technical capabilities,
-
6:28 - 6:32they don't know how to solve problems. Even if they were sincere,
-
6:32 - 6:34they don't know how to solve problems.
-
6:34 - 6:39It's the technicians that produce the desalinization plants.
-
6:39 - 6:43It's the technicians that give you electricity, that give you motor vehicles,
-
6:43 - 6:46that heat your house and cool it in the summer time.
-
6:46 - 6:49It's technology that solves problems
-
6:49 - 6:55not politics, politics cannot solve problems cause they are not trained to do so.
-
6:55 - 7:01And writing your congressmen is fantastic, they tell you to write your congressman if you want something done.
-
7:02 - 7:05The men in washington should be at the forefront of technology,
-
7:06 - 7:09the forefront of human study, the forefront of crime
-
7:09 - 7:14all the factors that shape human behaviour. You don't have to write your congressmen
-
7:14 - 7:18What kind of people are they that are appointed to do that job?
-
7:18 - 7:23Instead of putting up a sign: "Drive carefully, slippery when wet"
-
7:23 - 7:27put abrasive in the highway so its not slippery when wet.
-
7:27 - 7:31And if a person gets in the car they are drunk and the car oscillates a great deal,
-
7:31 - 7:34there's a little pendulum that swings up and back and that would
-
7:34 - 7:39pull the car over to the side, not a law, a solution.
-
7:39 - 7:43Put sonar and radar in all auto mobiles so they can't hit one another.
-
7:43 - 7:48Man made laws are attempts to deal with occurring problems
-
7:48 - 7:52and not knowing how to solve them, they make a law.
-
7:53 - 7:59So you live in a managed world, and your kids in the future will say to you, wasn't it obvious?
-
8:00 - 8:04That you paid off senators, you paid off governments, you paid off different people
-
8:04 - 8:09to get your will? Isn't that obvious? I guess not.
-
8:09 - 8:20And so, if you do away with the money system, you can't have the sale of drugs. You can't pay off senators. You can't buy people.
-
8:20 - 8:24You understand what I'm saying? As long as you've got money, no matter who you elect.
-
8:24 - 8:29You say, "Well, maybe if we elect decent people in government..." No way, even if you had
-
8:29 - 8:34the most decent people in the world, taken from the best churches you like
-
8:34 - 8:39If you ran out of resources, be lying, cheating, killing, stealing.
-
8:39 - 8:45It's resources that people need, not money. Access to resources.
-
8:45 - 8:51But we have more than enough resources. Have you considered the money spent on world war II
-
8:51 - 8:54you could have wiped out the slums all over the world,
-
8:54 - 8:58educated people, built the best universities free of charge.
-
8:58 - 9:00Why do we do it free of charge?
-
9:00 - 9:04Because the smarter the kids are, the richer all of us will be.
-
9:04 - 9:09Every kid shooting up drugs, hanging out in malls. Why? They have no place to go.
-
9:09 - 9:16There should be art centers, music centers, cultural centers, theater groups, where people can go.
-
9:16 - 9:21They hang out in malls and coats stands because there's no place to go.
-
9:21 - 9:28And the government, I would say this, the government than entry, doesn't give a shit about people.
-
9:28 - 9:37Proof, now. They would not outsource. I have a big factory: if I pay my help more than the minimum wage,
-
9:37 - 9:41I can't stay in business, if he outsources to China. Do you understand?
-
9:41 - 9:48You're not going to invest in the company that builds playgrounds for the women's children that work in the factory.
-
9:48 - 9:53You want the money spent on products advertising so the income is greater. So you invest in it.
-
9:53 - 9:56So we're all sons of bitches in the monetary system.
-
9:56 - 9:58It makes us that way.
-
9:59 - 10:04Well I say if you're not... consult your bank account and see who you are.
-
10:09 - 10:14But there's a reason, there's a reason... there's a reason for this, there's a reason education sucks,
-
10:14 - 10:18it's the same reason it will never, ever, ever be fixed.
-
10:18 - 10:22It's never gonna get any better, don't look for it, be happy with what you got.
-
10:22 - 10:25Because the owners of this country don't want that.
-
10:26 - 10:31I'm talking about the real owners now, the real owners: the big wealthy business interests,
-
10:31 - 10:34that control things and they make all the important decisions.
-
10:34 - 10:39Forget the politicians, the politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice.
-
10:39 - 10:42You don't! You have no choice.
-
10:42 - 10:48You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important lands,
-
10:48 - 10:50they own and control the corporations,
-
10:50 - 10:55they've long since born to pay for the senate the congress to stay down as their city holes, they got the judges in their back pocket,
-
10:55 - 11:00and they own all the big media companies so they control just about all of the news and information you get here,
-
11:00 - 11:06they got you by the balls! They've spent billions of dollars every year lobbying,
-
11:06 - 11:09lobbying to get what they want!
-
11:09 - 11:14But we know what they want, they want more for themselves and less for everybody else!
-
11:14 - 11:19But I'll tell you what they don't want: they don't want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking,
-
11:19 - 11:23they don't want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking,
-
11:23 - 11:27they're not interested in that, that doesn't help them. That's against their interests.
-
11:27 - 11:28That's right!
-
11:29 - 11:32They don't want people who are smart enough to sit around the kitchen table
-
11:32 - 11:34figuring how badly they are getting fucked by a system
-
11:34 - 11:38that threw them overboard thirty fucking years ago. They don't want that. You know what they want?
-
11:38 - 11:42They want obedient workers. Obedient workers.
-
11:42 - 11:45People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paper work
-
11:45 - 11:50and just dumb enough, to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs
-
11:50 - 11:54with the lower pay and the longer hours the reduced benefits the end of overtime
-
11:54 - 11:57and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it,
-
11:57 - 12:02and now they are coming for your social security money. They want your fucking retirement money.
-
12:03 - 12:07They want it back, so they can give it to their criminal friends on wall street.
-
12:07 - 12:10And you know something? They'll get it, they'll get it all from you sooner or later,
-
12:10 - 12:16because they own this fucking place. It's a big club, and you ain't in it.
-
12:16 - 12:20You and I are not in the big club.
-
12:20 - 12:24By the way it's the same big club they used to beat you over the head with all day long and they tell you what to believe.
-
12:24 - 12:26All day long beating you over the head and the media's telling you
-
12:26 - 12:29what to believe, what to think and what to buy.
-
12:29 - 12:36The table is tilted folks, the game is rigged, and nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care.
-
12:36 - 12:41Good honest hard working people, white collar, blue collar, it doesn't matter what color shirt you have on,
-
12:41 - 12:44good honest hard working people continue, these are people of modest means,
-
12:44 - 12:49continue to elect these rich cock suckers who don't give a fuck about them.
-
12:49 - 12:53They don't give a fuck about you, they don't give a fuck about you, they don't care about you,
-
12:53 - 12:57at all! At all! At all!
-
12:58 - 13:00You know?
-
13:01 - 13:04And nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care.
-
13:04 - 13:09That's what the owners count on: the fact the americans will probably remain willfully ignorant
-
13:09 - 13:13of the big, red white and blue dick that's been jammed up their assholes everyday.
-
13:13 - 13:18Because the owners of this country know the truth, it's called the American dream,
-
13:18 - 13:21cause you have to be asleep to believe it.
-
13:28 - 13:31[Alternative Solutions]
-
13:38 - 13:41Decisions must not represent personal opinions,
-
13:41 - 13:45but an action as result of scientific research.
-
13:45 - 13:50Politicians have no technical understanding, and thus provide no value
-
13:50 - 13:52when arriving at a decision.
-
13:53 - 13:59The nearest thing that I know, is to arrive at decisions, rather than make them.
-
13:59 - 14:06Arriving at decisions meaning: put all your decisions to test, see if they work.
-
14:06 - 14:09Use scientific scales of performance.
-
14:09 - 14:16And in that manner, we can probably arrive at closer agreements with nations.
-
14:16 - 14:20I believe that all nations need the same things:
-
14:20 - 14:25clean air, clean water, arable land,
-
14:25 - 14:28and medical and health security.
-
14:28 - 14:32And access to food, and the necessities of life.
-
14:32 - 14:39If we fail to work together, attempting to solve these problems,
-
14:39 - 14:44I feel the problems will continue, in much more vicious ways,
-
14:44 - 14:51because we are not touching or not addressing the actual manifestation,
-
14:52 - 14:54how these values come into being.
-
14:56 - 15:01So when I say, decisions have to be arrived at,
-
15:01 - 15:07first you have to study the carrying capacity of the planet, what it's capable of supporting.
-
15:07 - 15:13Then you design your cities, and population densities so that they correspond
-
15:13 - 15:16to the carrying capacity of the environment.
-
15:16 - 15:22That's what I mean when I say: people do not make decisions, they arrive at them.
-
15:22 - 15:27And how do you decide how much oxygen you carry on the submarine?
-
15:27 - 15:30Well, depends on the amount of people in the submarine,
-
15:30 - 15:34and how long you wish to be submerged.
-
15:34 - 15:36That determine that.
-
15:36 - 15:39How do you know how much water to carry on the submarine?
-
15:39 - 15:43How do you know how much food to carry? How do you know how much electrical power?
-
15:43 - 15:47Depends on the performance you want of that submarine,
-
15:47 - 15:51then you put in the proper electrical power
-
15:51 - 15:54for operating the submarine.
-
15:54 - 15:57You have to put enough food, and refrigeration equipment
-
15:58 - 16:05to feed the crew. If you don't provide for them, the technology may work, but the crew won't.
-
16:05 - 16:10So you have to not make decisions, you have to arrive at them
-
16:11 - 16:18Wants are irrelevant. Necessities are paramount, and they must be related to planetary resources.
-
16:19 - 16:24But the whole idea is in contradiction with the monetary system,
-
16:24 - 16:26so we need a different system.
-
16:51 - 16:55Reality is reality, and there can only be one,
-
16:55 - 16:59and it is best defined by scientific observation.
-
16:59 - 17:01Humans can only observe,
-
17:01 - 17:06actions or decisions are taken in relation to observations,
-
17:06 - 17:08and not some erroneous opinion.
