G-Lab True Bypass Wah Pad REVIEW & DEMO (GG-399) How to play

  • 0:08 - 0:10
    How you doing, dudes?
    It's Justin here.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
Today, I'm going to do a
    little review for you
  • 0:13 - 0:18
of this funky, new toy called the
    "G-Lab True Bypass Wah Pad".
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    Now, I need to explain
a little bit about what this does,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    because obviously, you know
  • 0:23 - 0:24
the Wah pedal is just a little plate.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
So, what does it do, and
    why is it so cool.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
This is definitely going to be
on my pedal board from now on.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    So why?
    What's so cool about it?
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    So, first thing you need
    to understand
  • 0:34 - 0:36
is a thing called, True Bypass.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    Now, True Bypass means that
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    when you plug your guitar
    into an effect pedal,
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    that the signal doesn't go
through the effect pedal at all
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    until you switch it on.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
Now a lot of, like, old classic
    Wahs and stuff like that
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    don't have True Bypass.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    What they call,
    "Modern Boutique Pedals",
  • 0:54 - 0:55
like the ones made by Robert KeeleyI
  • 0:55 - 0:58
and that kind of, you know,
    high-end effects pedal
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    they're nearly, always now
    True Bypass.
  • 1:00 - 1:01
And what it means is that
  • 1:01 - 1:05
so the signal is going from the guitar
    into your pedal.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
And then out of your pedal,
    into your amp.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    Now, something that doesn't have
    True Bypass,
  • 1:10 - 1:14
the signal goes into the pedal
and kind of gets digitally effected,
  • 1:14 - 1:17
like some the tone gets sucked out
    out of your sound,
  • 1:17 - 1:18
before it goes to the amp.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
Of course when you turn the pedal on,
  • 1:20 - 1:22
the signal has to go through
    the pedal anyway,
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    and that's what you want,
you want the sound to be effected.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
But when the pedal is off,
    what you ideally want
  • 1:28 - 1:31
is the signal to not go anywhere
    near the pedal.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
And that's what this pad does,
    for your Wah-wah.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    So, like I said,
a lot of the old Wahs
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    aren't True Bypass.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    So just plugging in,
    and plugging out of it
  • 1:40 - 1:42
even when the Wah is not being used,
  • 1:42 - 1:43
sucks some of the tone away.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    It's usually like top end,
is kind of, a little bit less dominant,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
it's got a little bit less bite.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
Different pedals going to suck the tone
    in different ways.
  • 1:52 - 1:57
A lot of the modern Wah-wah pedals,
like the RMC and the Boudoir
  • 1:57 - 1:59
and those, sort of, high-end pedals.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    They have built-in True Bypass,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    but most of them don't,
    definitely the old ones don't.
  • 2:03 - 2:10
So, what the idea would be is that
you put your pedal on the plate here,
  • 2:11 - 2:15
and then you plug it in,
it's got like a little instrument
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    the "Output".
  • 2:18 - 2:21
And then on the other side as well,
    it's got a little 9V power supply.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
And you can actually put the pedal,
    to power your Wah-wah inside
  • 2:25 - 2:27
the actual top of the unit here as well.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
There's a space in there for a pedal.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    It's also got a 9V "In",
so you could plug it into
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    your regular--
if you got a power supply
  • 2:35 - 2:39
like a power bank or a generator,
    or whatever that's powering
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    all your pedals
you can power it via this.
  • 2:41 - 2:45
And it's always going to be true
but it's going to be bypassed
  • 2:45 - 2:48
and this is the coolest thing
    about this pedal is
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    when you put pressure,
as soon as your foot touches
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    the Wah pedal and presses
    down on the pad,
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    it activates the Wah pedal.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
Now this is a really, really cool feature
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    because what happens usually,
    you've got like a little ON/OFF switch
  • 3:01 - 3:03
in your Wah-wah pedal at the,
kind of the top end of it,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    and you have to normally
    put your toe for them
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    press really hard,
    click the Wah-wah on
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    and then you're
    using your Wah
  • 3:09 - 3:12
And if you want it to turn off
again you have to press it again.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
You often get a bit of a
    "click" noise and stuff,
  • 3:15 - 3:18
it interrupts the flow a bit of your vibe,
    you know.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
Whereas with this thing, all you do
  • 3:20 - 3:21
just put your foot on it
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    you leave the Wahwah
in the ON position all the time
  • 3:24 - 3:27
because it's the True Bypass unit that
    switches it ON and OFF.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
So your Wah-wah is set in the ON position
  • 3:29 - 3:31
as soon as you touch your foot on it,
    it's working.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
So it means that you can kinda
    be playing your solo
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    put your foot on
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    give it a
    bit of Wah
  • 3:36 - 3:36
    lift your foot off
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    and the Wah
    automatically turns off.
  • 3:38 - 3:43
    So this bottom plate here
is kind of like a pressure-sensitive plate
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    So it feels that pressure
    of your foot going on
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    turns the Wah on.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
It is a really, really, really
    excellent idea
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    I'm surprised no one's
    thought of it before
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    well maybe they have and
I've just never heard of it but
  • 3:55 - 3:57
this is a really, really cool idea.
  • 3:57 - 4:03
And also, it has a little light
at the top of this True Bypass Wah Pad
  • 4:03 - 4:06
to let you know when your
    Wah's being activated.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
There's a couple of other cool tricks
that you can do with it as well
  • 4:09 - 4:13
like setting your Wah pedal and then
pressing on the corner of the pad,
  • 4:13 - 4:17
and that also activates the Wah sound,
it works kind of like a filter.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
But I'll give you some demos on that
    in a little bit.
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    But let's have a little bit of a close-up
    look at this thing now
  • 4:22 - 4:25
so you can see exactly what it does
    and how it works.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
Okay, here we are for a close-up look
    at the pedal now.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
You can see here, there's the
    input and output jacks.
  • 4:32 - 4:36
There's your little 9V power supply,
and these are just plugged to
  • 4:36 - 4:38
kind of underneath the actual pad part.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
Here's the top part of the pedal
and up here's the little light there
  • 4:41 - 4:44
so you can see when you're using the pedal
  • 4:44 - 4:47
Now if we just flip it around and
have a little look at the back there
  • 4:47 - 4:51
you can see, here, this is your "Input"
where you plug the guitar in.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
On the other side, is the "Output",
which would go to the amplifier,
  • 4:55 - 4:59
    and there's your 9V power,
so it can be supplied by your pedal bank
  • 4:59 - 5:00
if you wish it to be.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
So, what happens is your Wah-wah,
and I'm using here, my Keeley Wah-wah
  • 5:04 - 5:07
You whack your ol' Wah-wah on top there,
  • 5:07 - 5:11
and you see here, this is the
    instrument cable
  • 5:11 - 5:14
and that would go into there,
then you plug the other cable
  • 5:14 - 5:18
    onto the inside and
the 9V power supply onto that
  • 5:18 - 5:22
And then here, you will plug
from your guitar into the "Input" of here
  • 5:22 - 5:26
    and out of that side,
and that would go to your amplifier.
  • 5:26 - 5:31
So, as you will see, when I plug it in
in a sec, just putting your foot on
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    activates the pedal.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
It's a really, really smart little idea.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    This thing's really, really well-made.
    Good solid construction.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    You know, there's some instructions
    on the back here
  • 5:41 - 5:43
on how to replace the battery.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
Really, really well-made. You see here?
Made in Poland. There we go.
  • 5:46 - 5:51
This is a really, really, really cool toy,
I'm most impressed with this unit.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
So, let's have a bit of a looksy
and have a listen to how it works.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
Okay, so here we are all set-up
    ready to go.
  • 5:58 - 6:00
This cable here is going to my amplifier,
  • 6:00 - 6:03
and this one over here is
    coming straight from the guitar.
  • 6:03 - 6:07
You'll see here, there's the little light
    here that says "Active".
  • 6:07 - 6:10
When I press my foot or put a bit
    of pressure on the pedal,
  • 6:10 - 6:12
you can see that little light
    here comes on.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
So it's as simple as that.
  • 6:15 - 6:16
The Wah-wah is actually switched on
  • 6:16 - 6:19
you might be able to see
the faint blue light in the back here
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    which means that the Wah-wah
    is clicked on
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    like the actual Wah-wah itself.
  • 6:23 - 6:27
And now you're only going to hear
sounds when I put my foot on the pedal
  • 6:27 - 6:28
the Wah-wah is going to work.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
The rest of time the Wah-wah is off.
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    Now, as well as putting
    my foot on the pedal
  • 6:32 - 6:35
I can also put my foot on the
    edge of the tray here,
  • 6:35 - 6:38
which is a really, really funky
effect, I'm digging this a lot
  • 6:38 - 6:40
for a kind of rhythm-y sort of sound
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    You just set the Wah-wah
    in a particular place
  • 6:42 - 6:46
and put your toe on the corner here,
    and that activates, you see,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
by pressing on here, with my thumb here
  • 6:48 - 6:50
I'm pressing it, you can see
the little Active light go on.
  • 6:50 - 6:54
So, that's that. So I'll start off by
just showing you a couple of
  • 6:54 - 6:57
the idea that it just works and
as soon as I put my foot on there
  • 6:57 - 6:58
    it starts working.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
And then I'll just muck around a bit
and you can see some of the ideas here
  • 7:02 - 7:04
that you can use of being able to play
  • 7:04 - 7:07
and really quickly access a bit of Wah
sound and then go back to
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    not with playing with Wah.
  • 7:09 - 9:27
    (Wah-wah Pad Demo)
  • 9:28 - 9:33
Well, I hope you enjoyed my little demo
on this "G-Lab Wah Bypass" pedal.
  • 9:33 - 9:38
It's most cool, go and check it out
on their website, which is glab.com
  • 9:38 - 9:40
or there will be some more
    information on my website.
  • 9:40 - 9:43
    Take care, dudes,
    see you again soon, bye-bye.
