Top 10 "Road Rat" Tips with Pete Cook (Guitar Lesson MA-205)

  • 0:05 - 0:07
    [Justin] Hey, how you doing?
    Justin here.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
I'm here today with my buddy
    Cookie the Road Rat,
  • 0:09 - 0:12
and he's just written a great
    book called
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    "Road Rat Tips."
  • 0:13 - 0:15
And so we thought we'd bring you
  • 0:15 - 0:19
our top 10 tips for surviving on the
    road as a gigging musician.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    So, the first one is:
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    [Pete] Gaffer tape.
    It fixes absolutely everything.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
Always carry gaffer tape with you,
and you can't go far wrong.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
[Justin] See, this is, it is absolutely an
    essential thing.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
Really good, especially for tip #2 :
  • 0:35 - 0:37
Quiet when it's not your turn to play.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    And, so it's really important
    when you're at sound check
  • 0:41 - 0:45
that you be quiet, and let the rest
of the band do their stuff.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    Because when the front-of-house
    guy is trying to check
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    each of the individual instruments
    in the band,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
and he's trying to get the
    kick drum or the keyboard,
  • 0:52 - 0:53
he does not want to hear
  • 0:53 - 0:56
you whiddling whatever guitar song it is
    you've been been learning.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    Always remember that you
    absolutely must
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    stay quiet when it's not
    your turn to speak.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
And now it's tip number 3,
    [Pete] Owwww!
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    [Justin] which is...
    [Pete laughing]
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    [Pete] Travel insurance.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
It's really important when you go away,
if you're going abroad in particular,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
that you have some kind of travel
    insurance.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
It's going to get you home if
    you get into an accident,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
or get ill on the road because
if you don't have it you're in trouble.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    [Justin] Absolutely essential thing.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
#4: Getting your guitar on the plane.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
Sometimes can be a bit of a problem.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    You want to try
and get it on the plane
  • 1:29 - 1:31
rather than put it in the
    hold if you can.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
One of the tricks that you might want
to try is using a gig bag,
  • 1:35 - 1:39
and make sure that your gig bag
has a black strap, and wear a black top.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
That way, when you're talking to the chick
    when it's at check-in time,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
you've got the black strap just
    coming over one shoulder,
  • 1:46 - 1:48
and hopefully a guitar would be
    kind of hidden.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    Make sure it's low enough
    that it's poking up here.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
Just, it's not really kind naughty,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    you just don't want to
    maybe mention it,
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    and bring attention to
the fact that you've got a guitar.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
I think you mention in your book
    actually that it's very rare
  • 2:00 - 2:03
that the hostess will take your guitar
off you and put it in your hold.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    It's nearly always at the
    the check-in point right?
  • 2:06 - 2:09
So if you can get through that,
    and get to the plane,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
through security and all of that,
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    you're probably going to get
    your guitar on.
  • 2:13 - 2:14
There's a little trick for that.
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    [Justin] Uh, #5:
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    [Pete] #5 yeah, always keep
    your instrument
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    where you can see it.
  • 2:19 - 2:20
If you're on a train, and
  • 2:20 - 2:22
and you've put it in the luggage rack,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
make sure it's in the luggage rack
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    where you can see it.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    If you're going to
    sleep on the train,
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    take it out of the
    luggage rack,
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    put it on the floor,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
with the strap wrapped around your ankle.
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    [Justin] Good trick.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
I would have thought sleep on it,
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    but that's probably not
    always the most important
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    or comfortable way around it.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
Ok, #6 is: Making sure that
you have all of the right spares.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    So, for guitar players,
    it's making sure that
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    you have your spare strap,
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    spare lead, spare pick,
    spare strings,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    probably not a spare amp,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
spare guitar if you're only carrying one.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
You know, you can run into problems
  • 2:56 - 2:58
on stage if you break a
    string or whatever.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    I know for, Pete's
    a horn player,
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    so it's what? Reeds
    and oil and stuff.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    [Pete] Reeds, yeah, yup.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    [Pete] And make sure they're
    on the stage,
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    not in your case,
  • 3:07 - 3:08
which might seem only a few paces away,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
but in the middle of a tune, it's a mile.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    [Justin] Yeah. Although on guitar,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    you're probably going to leave
    your spare guitar.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    No, the spare guitar
    would be on stage actually,
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    but your spare strings probably'll
be at the side of the stage.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
Ok. #7. We've got: credit card.
  • 3:23 - 3:27
    Now credit card's really,
    really, really important.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    [Pete] Absolutely, yeah. A credit
    card is a life line.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
And the two things that I
    still worry about
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    after all these years is,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    firstly, missing flights, and secondly,
    getting stranded abroad.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
If you've got a credit card,
you'll always be able to get home.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    You'll always be able
to get out to the gig
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    if you miss your outward
    flight.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    [Justin] Absolutely.
I go one step further when I travel,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
I carry multiple spare credit cards.
  • 3:48 - 3:49
I've got one in my wallet,
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    one in my main luggage,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
and one in my little personal
    luggage bag as well,
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    Because you just, it's always
    useful to have
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    that extra one kicking around.
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    Because you never know.
It doesn't cost anything to have it.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
You know? And you can hide it away.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
So, #8: When you check in at a hotel
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    take a business card of
    the hotel which has
  • 4:08 - 4:10
the address and phone number on it.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
I was just regaling to Pete the story,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
when I was in Marrakesh and
I went out with my missus
  • 4:15 - 4:17
for a few drinks in the main square,
  • 4:17 - 4:19
and we decided we want to go back,
  • 4:19 - 4:22
and we didn't know the name of the hotel
or the address, or the phone number,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
or anything to do with it, and
    it took ages.
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    Thank God for iPhone and
    internet connection
  • 4:27 - 4:29
that we managed to actually find
    the place again.
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    Really good tip,
  • 4:30 - 4:32
especially if you're going to go
    out for some bevis,
  • 4:32 - 4:35
and you're in a funny place.
    Get that business card,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
whack it in your pocket or your
    wallet and hang onto it.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    [Justin] So, # 9.
    [Pete] # 9: passport.
  • 4:40 - 4:44
    It's a really valuable document,
both to you and to villains.
  • 4:44 - 4:48
So, you keep that passport with
    you wherever you go.
  • 4:48 - 4:51
I actually take mine on stage with
    me in my hip pocket.
  • 4:51 - 4:54
And when I'm not on stage it goes
in a bum bag or something like that.
  • 4:54 - 4:58
The one place I don't leave it
is in the safe in the hotel room,
  • 4:58 - 5:02
    because I don't think hotel
    room safes are actually safe.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    I actually gaffer tape mine
to the underside of the bed.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
[Justin] Which is a great tip,
and I'd never heard of that.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
I never use the safes either,
but I'm always scared of where
  • 5:10 - 5:13
to put my valuables. I don't
think the safes are a good idea either.
  • 5:13 - 5:19
Ok, #10... is avoid dodgy food.
And when I say dodgy I mean
  • 5:19 - 5:23
street stalls are a bad idea.
Definitely seafood like prawns or whatever
  • 5:23 - 5:26
if it's open air. If you
think it even slightly looks dodgy
  • 5:26 - 5:29
just stay away from it. Because
if you're travelling and you're touring
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    the gig is the biggest,
    the most important thing.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
It's the reason that you're there,
and you don't want to end up
  • 5:35 - 5:37
running off half way through the
    stage because you ate
  • 5:37 - 5:41
some dodgy sandwich or whatever. So,
just be hyper aware of what
  • 5:41 - 5:45
you're putting in your face. You know.
    Any particular foods that you've?...
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    think are nasty ones?
  • 5:47 - 5:50
[Pete] Well, seafood in hot places
    in particular.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    [Justin] Uh huh.
    [Pete] I can remember once,
  • 5:52 - 5:54
one of my colleagues had to
    run off the stage
  • 5:54 - 5:57
in the middle of a song,
and when we're at the hotel eating
  • 5:57 - 6:00
three of the guys who'd eaten
    this spicy seafood soup
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    all said how marvelous
it was when they're eating it.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
But it only takes one bad clam so...
  • 6:04 - 6:06
[Justin] All of these tips and a whole lot
    more
  • 6:06 - 6:08
you're going to find in Pete Cook's book,
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    "The Road Rat's Tips."
That's him, that's the road rat.
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    And it's available from
    all leading book stores.
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    [Pete] It's available on Amazon.
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    [Justin] It's on Amazon.
    So go check it out.
  • 6:19 - 6:23
    And we'll see you for
    more stupidness another time.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    [Justin and Pete laughing]
