Triad Chords #1of3 (Guitar Lesson CH-008) How to play
-
0:09 - 0:11Hi, how're you doin' dudes?
-
0:11 - 0:12This is Justin here.
-
0:12 - 0:15In this lesson today we're gonna be talking about triads.
-
0:15 - 0:18And we're not talking about gang warfare,
we're talking about little chords. -
0:18 - 0:22First of all, for those of you that haven't done your
Music Theory homework, -
0:22 - 0:27a triad is a three note chord,
it usually contains the root, 3rd, -
0:27 - 0:31and a 5th of a Major scale,
so in the key of G, -
0:31 - 0:36for instance, a G triad
will have the notes G, B and D. -
0:36 - 0:41Now to play a triad, most of the big chords
that you play at the moment, -
0:41 - 0:44are probably kind of expanded triads if you like.
-
0:44 - 0:47If we take a like a regular big G chord
that you might play, -
0:47 - 0:51like you know the open G chord,
then the notes that you're playing there, -
0:51 - 0:56are a G, B, D, G, D, G.
-
0:56 - 0:59So there's actually only 3 notes
in the chord that you're playing anyway. -
0:59 - 1:02But the type of triads that we're going to look at today,
-
1:02 - 1:05are ones that actually only use
the three notes of the triad. -
1:05 - 1:08You use them in lots of different circumstances
-
1:08 - 1:12particularly common is kind of like a second guitar part.
-
1:12 - 1:14So hopefully some of you
are jamming with your buddies, -
1:14 - 1:17and you know if he's playing
the chords to whatever song, -
1:17 - 1:21you need to be able to find a nice way
of kind of introducing a second guitar part, -
1:21 - 1:24and this is absolutely perfect for doing that,
-
1:24 - 1:26and I'm going to give you
a few examples of the way to use it. -
1:26 - 1:28And also it gets used a lot in reggae,
-
1:28 - 1:31so, a lot of people have kind of said
that you'd like me to -
1:31 - 1:34kind of demonstrate what I'm gonna do
before we actually do the lesson. -
1:34 - 1:37So, if I just use, I'm just gonna use
a little simple chord progression, -
1:37 - 1:42like G-C-G-D, some of those
kind of triad things that you might be doing. -
1:42 - 1:49Using G triad, C, G back to D. (plays)
-
1:49 - 1:56Or, you can do it up here.
G, C, back to G, and then to D again. -
1:56 - 2:04You can do it right up the neck up here.
G, C, G to D. -
2:04 - 2:09So there's all of these,
that would be kinda good example of the 2nd guitar part, -
2:09 - 2:16if the first one was doing these chords,
G,C,G,D. -
2:16 - 2:22If somebody was doing that,
that's a really, really common kind of chord sequence. -
2:22 - 2:25And a nice one to practice your triads with.
-
2:25 - 2:27So, that'll be the first way that it gets used.
-
2:27 - 2:30The second is a lot of reggae stuff.
-
2:30 - 2:33So, because the chords
are kinda nice and high sounding. -
2:33 - 2:36Like they're kinda crisp
and using mainly three strings. -
2:36 - 2:38At least the type of triads
we're gonna be looking at today, -
2:38 - 2:40are just on the thinnest three strings.
-
2:40 - 2:43So, good example,
like a reggae kinda feel, you know -
2:43 - 2:58. . .
-
2:58 - 3:01That kind of effect, you know,
so, nice short little chords. -
3:01 - 3:05Of course everyone always asks
about the sound that I'm using as well, -
3:05 - 3:06so I might as well get that
out of the way early on. -
3:06 - 3:11I'm using a Stratocaster,
it's from the early 90s, -
3:11 - 3:17nothing particularly fancy,
and this is going through the Mesa Boogie Rec Pre, -
3:17 - 3:20with a little bit of delay
from the TC Electronic G System, -
3:20 - 3:22and it's just coming out my studio speakers,
-
3:22 - 3:24cause my amp is in for repair at the moment.
-
3:24 - 3:27Not repair,
but having a kind of general service. -
3:27 - 3:32Anyway, so let's get started
and talk about these little triads, -
3:32 - 3:33and actually how you play them now.
-
3:33 - 3:37So, what we're gonna start off with
is looking at the G triad. -
3:37 - 3:41So, as I mentioned earlier,
briefly, we're only gonna be looking -
3:41 - 3:44at triads in this lesson
on the thinnest three strings. -
3:44 - 3:48If you get good with those
it's quite easy to find the other triad shapes, -
3:48 - 3:51on the other strings once you know the theory,
which I'm about to explain to you. -
3:51 - 3:55So, if we talk about a G triad,
a G Major triad, -
3:55 - 4:00we've got Root, 3rd and 5th from the scale,
which is the notes G, B and D. -
4:00 - 4:04Now you can pick a G, B and a D
anywhere on the guitar neck, -
4:04 - 4:06put 'em together and you're playing a triad,
which would be a G chord. -
4:06 - 4:09And you could play it instead of the G chord
or as well as the G chord, -
4:09 - 4:12and it will still work
and it'll still sound cool. -
4:12 - 4:15So if you wrote down all the G's, B's and D's,
-
4:15 - 4:19all over the guitar neck,
and then just look at the way that they kind of fall, -
4:19 - 4:24naturally on the thinnest 3 strings,
you end up with 3 different shapes. -
4:24 - 4:26And I'm gonna do a close up of this in a sec,
-
4:26 - 4:31the first one will be kind of down here
around kind of the 3rd fret, -
4:31 - 4:35there's another one up here
which is around the 7th fret. -
4:35 - 4:40And another one right up
kind of around the 10th to 12th fret. -
4:40 - 4:43This is the three kind of triad shapes
that we're going to be dealing with first of all. -
4:43 - 4:47And the big key to these things is that you remember
where the Root note of the triad is. -
4:47 - 4:50Because that's how you're gonna locate
all of your other chords. -
4:50 - 4:53Now those of you that are using my
Practical Music Theory Book, -
4:53 - 4:56you'll find that there's a little section
on how to find your own chord. -
4:56 - 4:59So if you filled that out correctly
in the key of G, -
4:59 - 5:01you should be able to find those triad shapes,
-
5:01 - 5:06on the first three strings anyway,
I've put some neck diagrams up on the website, -
5:06 - 5:08so you probably want to go
and check out the website, -
5:08 - 5:11to find out exactly what the triad shapes are,
-
5:11 - 5:14and the correct fingering,
although I will be showing you in just a moment. -
5:14 - 5:19And using that kind of sheet
where you've written all the G's, B's and D's out, -
5:19 - 5:22you should be able to find the triad shapes
on all of the other strings too. -
5:22 - 5:25So without further ado,
let's go to a close up now, -
5:25 - 5:29and look at the way
that you're going to play these little triads, -
5:29 - 5:31and the three different shapes
that we're gonna talk about today. -
5:33 - 5:37OK here we are,
this is our first G triad shape. -
5:37 - 5:40So this here note, this is the 3rd fret,
and that's the note G. -
5:40 - 5:44That's the Root note,
really important that you clock that one first. -
5:44 - 5:47Now we're also, we're gonna be using
a little bar here with our 1st finger, -
5:47 - 5:51covering the thinnest two strings,
and then we're gonna reach the 2nd finger, -
5:51 - 5:59over on to the 4th fret, yeah,
and we're just gonna play those 3 notes. -
5:59 - 6:03So this is a G triad,
and making sure that you remember that the note there, -
6:03 - 6:08on the thinnest string is the Root note,
that's where we get the name of the shape. -
6:08 - 6:10Cause this shape's gonna move
up and down the finger board, -
6:10 - 6:13and it's just gonna change its name,
but that's the shape. -
6:13 - 6:16So 3, 3, 4.
-
6:20 - 6:22So here we are for the second shape,
-
6:22 - 6:26and hopefully some of you will recognize this,
it looks kinda like a D chord. -
6:26 - 6:31You could definitely refer to this
as kinda being a D shape. -
6:31 - 6:34We're here now,
this is the 1st finger on the 7th fret, -
6:34 - 6:392nd finger also on the 7th fret,
but on the thinnest string. -
6:39 - 6:42And the 3rd finger goes down in the middle.
-
6:42 - 6:46And this note here with the 3rd finger,
that's the note G. -
6:46 - 6:47. . .
-
6:47 - 6:50This is the Root note, yeah,
really important that -
6:50 - 6:53you recognize that this is the Root note
here on the 8th fret, -
6:53 - 6:57of the 2nd string,
the other two fingers going down in the 7th fret. -
6:57 - 7:02. . .
-
7:03 - 7:05And lastly, here we are,
this is our last G shape triad. -
7:05 - 7:10Now this one we're starting with our
3rd finger on the 12th fret of the 3rd string. -
7:10 - 7:13And this is the note G,
this is the Root note. -
7:13 - 7:19Then the little finger underneath
also on the 12th fret. -
7:19 - 7:22And 1st finger down on the 10th fret.
-
7:22 - 7:24. . .
-
7:24 - 7:27Making sure you remember this is the Root note.
-
7:27 - 7:30This is gonna be really important
in just a second so, -
7:30 - 7:32. . .
-
7:32 - 7:33make sure you get that down.
-
7:35 - 7:40OK, we've been through now
the three different Major triad shapes. -
7:40 - 7:43You need to be able to practice them
and move between them. -
7:43 - 7:52So the first thing that I recommend you do
is just make sure you can go G, G, G. -
7:52 - 7:54Maybe the octave.
-
7:54 - 7:57Which is exactly the same as the first one but 12 frets higher.
-
7:57 - 7:59Then back down again.
-
7:59 - 8:02. . .
-
8:02 - 8:05Good idea to be able to do that properly first.
-
8:05 - 8:08Make sure again
that you're only plucking the thinnest three strings. -
8:08 - 8:10Of course the other ones
you just have to leave alone. -
8:10 - 8:13Yeah, it's not a bad idea
to kind of mute them out, -
8:13 - 8:17with the inside of this hand here,
if you just rest that on the thickest strings. -
8:17 - 8:19That'll help keep them quiet as well,
-
8:19 - 8:21if you're gonna end up doing this with any distortion.
-
8:21 - 8:23Then you probably need to do that.
-
8:23 - 8:25So the first exercise then that you should be doing,
-
8:25 - 8:27once you've got your 3 shapes down.
-
8:27 - 8:29Now I'm gonna use throughout this exercise,
-
8:29 - 8:34this little chord progression which goes
G, C, G, D. -
8:34 - 8:36Yeah, it's a really,
really common progression, -
8:36 - 8:38you'll find lots of songs that use those 3 chords.
-
8:38 - 8:41That's the I, IV and V chords from the key of G.
-
8:41 - 8:43Also used in the thing called the 3 chord trick,
-
8:43 - 8:47if you're familiar with that,
then you'll be familiar with I, IV, and V, -
8:47 - 8:49and probably the chords
G, C, and D. -
8:49 - 8:51Of course when it comes
to practicing it for real, -
8:51 - 8:54you could use whatever chord sequence you like.
-
8:54 - 8:57But we're just dealing
with these three chords in all majors, -
8:57 - 9:01for the time being, so...
-
9:04 - 9:06Tassie Devil singing.
