Interval Ear Training: Aural Training Stage 5of5 (Guitar Lesson AU-105) How to play

0:11 - 0:13Hi, how are you doing, Justin here!

0:13 - 0:16Here we are at Aural Training Stage 5,
-
0:16 - 0:18where we are now looking at
-
0:18 - 0:23all of the chromatic, ascending,
melodic intervals. -
0:23 - 0:25Bit of a mouthful that one, aye?
-
0:25 - 0:26So basically, we are looking at
-
0:26 - 0:29all of the notes ascending,
like going up, -
0:29 - 0:30within an octave.
-
0:30 - 0:33There's 3 intervals that
we haven't looked at yet, -
0:33 - 0:38they are a minor 6, a minor 7,
(or a flat 6 and a flat 7) -
0:38 - 0:40and also an augmented 4th.
-
0:40 - 0:42you can also call this a flat 5.
-
0:42 - 0:43I tend to think of it as a sharp 4.
-
0:43 - 0:46Doesn't really matter,
sharp 4, flat 5, -
0:46 - 0:49augmented 4th, diminished 5th,
same thing, don't worry about it. -
0:51 - 0:53So, we need to check out
these intervals. -
0:53 - 0:55So, the first one
that we need to look at -
0:55 - 0:56is the flat 6.

0:56 - 0:59♪

0:59 - 1:01Now, I always hear this...
-
1:01 - 1:04The one that I kind of grew up with
was a song called Black Orpheus. -
1:04 - 1:08♪
-
1:08 - 1:10It's that.
It's a kind of a jazz standard. -
1:10 - 1:12♪
-
1:12 - 1:14But there's also a lot cooler ones.
-
1:14 - 1:18So, you can either use Black Orpheus,
or you can use Without Me, the Eminem classic, -
1:18 - 1:25the little riff that he get's going (♪)
That beginning of that. -
1:25 - 1:28♪

1:28 - 1:30That's a flat 6 interval. Minor 6.

1:30 - 1:33♪
-
1:33 - 1:34Great song.

1:34 - 1:42♪
-
1:42 - 1:46Ok, so, that's your flat 6, or
Black Orpheus. -
1:46 - 1:50♪

1:50 - 1:54Beautiful melody, again.
The other one that we're looking at -
1:54 - 2:05is a flat 7, now, flat 7 sounds like this: ♪
Now, I always hear it as sounding bluesy. -
2:05 - 2:11That's how I recognize that interval.
Apparently, the Star Trek theme tune starts like it, -
2:11 - 2:15but I just wouldn't be able, for the life of me,
I can't figure out how it goes and I've already -
2:15 - 2:17started the video, I'm not gonna go and
look it up on Youtube, figure it out, -
2:17 - 2:21work out and play it. So, those of you,
that know Star Trek ♪ -
2:21 - 2:24I used to be a fan of Star Trek too, It's kinda...
I should remember how it goes, -
2:24 - 2:31I just, it's not in my head now for some reason.
Anyway, that's the interval, it's a flat 7 -
2:31 - 2:32♪

2:32 - 2:33I just recognize it

2:33 - 2:37♪
-
2:37 - 2:43It's got two steps up to the octave (♪)
-
2:43 - 2:50Just sounds kind of bluesy.
Funk kind of sound in it (♪) -
2:50 - 2:56So, I'm not so helpful with giving you
a song hint here on the flat 7 interval, but ♪ -
2:56 - 3:00If some of you guys, you know,
experienced aural trainers out there, ♪ -
3:00 - 3:04wanna tell me some songs other then
Star Trek, that start like that ♪ -
3:04 - 3:10I'll add them up to the website, but some
people find that interval difficult to pick. -
3:10 - 3:13It's just really getting
the sound in your head ♪ -
3:13 - 3:18Singing it over and over again,
getting used to the sound ♪ -
3:18 - 3:21Probably the best singing exercise
you can do is: playing the root note, -
3:21 - 3:25♪
-
3:25 - 3:29Try and sing that interval that you're
going for, ♪ and then play it! -
3:29 - 3:31Make sure that you've got it right.
-
3:31 - 3:33♪
-
3:33 - 3:37Probably the best way of getting
that sound properly in your ear. -
3:37 - 3:39That's flat 7
-
3:39 - 3:42The other interval that we have to
check out is the sharp 4, or flat 5. -
3:42 - 3:46♪
-
3:46 - 3:48This is exactly halfway between
an octave, this one: -
3:48 - 3:49♪
-
3:49 - 3:53Used to be called the devil's interval (♪)
-
3:53 - 3:57And if you were a composer, and you know,
medieval times and you wrote this interval -
3:57 - 4:00in a song that'd burn you
at a stake for being a witch -
4:00 - 4:01♪
-
4:01 - 4:04Lucky, that doesn't happen these days, right?
Or, I would be really screwed. -
4:04 - 4:07♪
-
4:07 - 4:11There's a few tunes that...the most common
I guess, tune that most people use I guess is -
4:11 - 4:16The Simpsons - ♪
-
4:16 - 4:26Just sounds like that; it's kinda obvious.
It's also from Ave Maria. ♪ -
4:26 - 4:31The song I...that kinda resonated with me when
I was a teenager and kinda learning this stuff -
4:31 - 4:35there was a band I really liked called Primus
and they had a song called John the Fisherman -
4:35 - 4:37which started-off with this augmented 4th
-
4:37 - 4:41♪
-
4:41 - 4:44so I always hear it as being the
John the Fisherman interval -
4:44 - 4:45♪ - Primus
-
4:45 - 4:47But Simpsons is probably a more common
-
4:47 - 4:53♪
-
4:53 - 4:57It's not a difficult sound to get that one,
it's got a...all of these intervals they've -
4:57 - 5:00kind of got their own personality.
And that's kind of what you're looking for -
5:00 - 5:04you're looking for a song. A song's a really
good start. If you can find a song that fits -
5:04 - 5:09with the inerval, a song that you know,
that's really, that's the best place to start. -
5:09 - 5:11After you've played it a few times,
and you've got used to hearing it -
5:11 - 5:14as a song, just see if you can find
the character of the interval. -
5:14 - 5:18'Cause it's almost, they've got a personality,
they've got their own flavor, or character -
5:18 - 5:23or color, whatever you wanna call it.
Some methods around refer to them as -
5:23 - 5:27colors; the intervals as each one having
a different color. They've never really -
5:27 - 5:30worked for me, I know it works for some
other people, it didn't work for me. -
5:30 - 5:33I hear them as kind of characters.
They've got a personality. -
5:33 - 5:38That's how I see it. Other people...you know;
it's got a flavor, whatever you wanna call it, right? -
5:38 - 5:43But try and develop a little bit of that beyond
just thinking of it as a song. Try and find a colour, -
5:43 - 5:48or a flavor, or a personality in the intervals,
and you'll start to hear them a lot clearer -
5:48 - 5:51Especially as it gets more complicated
and you starting to...later on -
5:51 - 5:59you'll looking at chords and you'll try to
find the intervals in that chord, if you can -
5:59 - 6:04hear the personalities, or the colours, or
the flavors, it's easier than trying to hear -
6:04 - 6:07all of those different songs all at the
same time. That's pretty complicated, right? -
6:07 - 6:13So, I think we're ready now to have a
close-up look, I nearly forgot that. -
6:13 - 6:17Ok, let's go to a close-up and check-out
how to play these 3 different intervals. -
6:18 - 6:23Down 2 strings and back 2 frets. So, from
here, down 2 strings, back 2 frets. -
6:23 - 6:33♪
-
6:33 - 6:38Just practice doing it,
practice the duu-daaa, then play it! -
6:38 - 6:38♪
-
6:38 - 6:44Play the root note sing along with it then
Jump to the interval with your voice ♪ -
6:44 - 6:54It's minor 6, then we've
also got minor 7 ♪ -
6:54 - 6:56These are in the same fret, but with
one string in the middle -
6:56 - 6:59So there, miss one, play the next one.

6:59 - 7:05♪
-
7:05 - 7:08Listen to it! Play it, listen to it!
Really try and get it in your ears. -
7:08 - 7:15Do the little sing, check it!
Also works of course ♪ -
7:15 - 7:19So all of these different interval shapes work
with either a 6th string root, or a 5th string root. -
7:19 - 7:21♪

7:21 - 7:24It's a flat 7. Now the other one we've
looked at was a augmented 4th. -
7:24 - 7:27♪

7:27 - 7:28I always think of these as diagonals.

7:28 - 7:31♪
-
7:31 - 7:35Other one: beginning of Purple Haze it's
another song that uses augmented 4th -
7:35 - 7:38There's quite a few - ♪

7:38 - 7:40The Simpsons - ♪
-
7:40 - 7:45Or, Ave Maria - ♪

7:45 - 7:51It's Primus; so it's just completely diagonal.
So, one string over, one string up. -
7:51 - 7:53That's how you play the augmented 4th.

7:54 - 7:56It's time to do a test!
-
7:56 - 8:01So, the 1st one we're looking at is
gonna be test 5A, and we're going to -
8:01 - 8:06be playing each of the intervals twice
and it is just going to be the flat 6, the flat 7, -
8:06 - 8:11and the augmented 4th.
Now, just to pre-warn you a bit, -
8:11 - 8:16some people get a bit confused between the
augmented 4th and the flat 7 -
8:16 - 8:19Really try and get used to it.
there is no other way, really other than -
8:19 - 8:24practicing and singing it. But try and get
used to how far each one is from the root note. -
8:24 - 8:33The augmented 4th (♪) seems closer to me
then (plays flat 7) it's like a bigger jump; -
8:33 - 8:38it's further away, (♪)
I think the confusing thing is -
8:38 - 8:42that they're both referred to as dissonant.
They both got quite a lot of tension in those intervals. -
8:42 - 8:45So, if they're personalities they're
kind of wound up a bit, right? -
8:45 - 8:49So, because of that, there's sometimes it's
a little easy to confuse the two, but -
8:49 - 8:54it, again, it's only practice.
Everything on the guitar, it's just down to practice. -
8:54 - 8:59The right practice.
So, let's do a test! -

if you have any of it that you were struggling with -
11:09 - 11:11practice them a few more times,
practice singing along, -
11:11 - 11:14try and feel their vibration,
pick-up on their personality -
11:14 - 11:18find their flavor, look at the color,
whatever it is that you're using, -
11:18 - 11:21try and get with those particular
intervals that you struggle with. -
11:21 - 11:24Remember that when you're practicing
this sort of stuff, you should be practicing -
11:24 - 11:27the ones that you struggle with,
not all of them. -
11:27 - 11:32If you're totally acing 2nds, 3rds, 4ths and 5ths,
when you're practicing, leave'em out! -
11:32 - 11:35Untick those boxes, so you're not working
on those particular intervals. -
11:35 - 11:38'Cause you know them already.
Work on the ones you can't do! -
11:38 - 11:42Very good little practice tip to remember
is: always practice what you can't do, -
11:42 - 11:46dont't practice what you can.
Lot's of people fall into that trap. -
11:46 - 11:50playing the same stuff that they know
how to do over and over again; -
11:50 - 11:53They don't work on the stuff they can't do
which is what would make them -
11:53 - 11:57a better guitar player. Of course this whole
interval thing works not just for guitarists, -
11:57 - 12:02for all instruments, but you know what
I'm saying. Okay, now we're at 5B. -
12:02 - 12:09The final test of this little series. In which
we have all of the diatonic intervals. -
12:09 - 12:16So, minor 2nd, 2nd, minor 3rd, 3rd, 4th,
augmented 4th, 5th, flat 6/minor 6, 6 -
12:16 - 12:22flat 7, 7, and octave. A whole lots of
juice from now. And this is kind of... -
12:22 - 12:27This is a seriously good level of
aural training. If you can get this and -
12:27 - 12:32you can get'em all right that's great.
So, see how you go, go to the website, there's -
12:32 - 12:38plenty more tests on there, if you use the
interval--Justinguitar Ear Trainer thingy- -
12:38 - 12:43or do it yourself, practice buddy, whatever
recording yourself. One of those methods. -
